DeSean Jackson issues statement after using gay slur

D. Jackson2 AP

More than a week after DeSean Jackson directed a gay slur at a satellite radio caller, Deadspin picked the story up Friday with a transcript of the event.

Jackson took the seemingly inevitable next step by releasing a statement on the matter Saturday.

“In a recent radio interview a caller got really confrontational with me. I got very heated with the caller, took it a bit too far and did not mean to offend anybody. I meant no disrespect and a better choice of words was needed,” said Jackson through a P.R. rep, via PhillySportsDaily.com.

Jackson was less apologetic in all caps Friday night after the story broke.

“WANNA BRING ME DOWN BUT IM OK!! THEY TRYIN KNOCC ME OFF BUT IM STILL ON!!” Jackson wrote.

And another one:  “THEY LOOKN 2 TAKE YA DOWN AT ALL TIMES NO MATTER HOW POSITIVE AND WHAT U DO!! ITS ALWAYS AWAY THEY TRY TO GET YA…. IM STANDIN TALL.”

Yeah, that public statement would have probably been more effective without the Twitter comments that preceded it.

Desean Jackson is an idiot, a talented idiot but an idiot still. He about as ignorant as the Giants player who said he would trade his super bowl ring in exchange for gay people not to get married. Just another case of an egotistical rich athlete opening his mouth when he should just keep it closed. What gay fans they had are gone and im sure there ignorant a$$es would say they prefer it that way.

Shouldn’t have to apologize for speaking his mind. If you’re offended by his comments don’t buy his jersey or watch him play on Sundays.

Maybe he should apologize to the gay community by telling them that next time he has a chance he’s gonna “sting they ass”!

  17. fonetiklee says: Jul 9, 2011 6:00 PM

Obviously he really shouldn’t have such language, but unfortunately it’s very prevalent. Been in a high school classroom lately? That’s pretty much the favorite insult of every teenage boy. Doesn’t speak much for his maturity, but it’s not the end of the world.

We should organize “National Apology Day” and just basically do a blanket preemptive apology to all special interest groups who will always find a way to be offended by something somebody says. Then after that we can all just go on with our lives, speak freely and openly, and not have to be worried all the time about offending somebody.

really? what facts do you base that off little kid? The Eagles actually keep things more classy then most. Andy Ried never calls out his players in public, players are instructed to always say the right things after games (win or lose). Cowboys, Giants, Bengals, etc are all a little more unclassy then Eagle players remember Jacobs throwing his helmet in the stands? remember QB vince young giving fans the bird? Etc Etc… Give me a break…

Oh yeah, the Eagles & their fans are among the classiest in the league…
Lest we these classy moves by the eagles & their fans:
Cheering the injury of a opposing teams player that was laying on the ground not moving for minutes.
Reid calling out Akers after the playoff loss last year (but he NEVER does that).
Your QB once giving the fans the finger in Atlanta.
Having a QB that found enjoyment in torturing already injured & crying animals multiple times a week for 6 years.
McNabb demanding a public apology from coaching for being benched.
    Booing Santa, thats so famous.
Being the only stadium in the league with a jail in the stadium & a judge on duty during home games for drunkin rowdy fans.
Philly fans want to tell others that Phillies baseball fans are better behaved than the football fans…I guess except that Phillies fan that intentionally puked on another fans daughter. Another unforgettable maneuver from a Philadelphia fan.
Throwing batteries at opposing fans, throwing snowballs at opposing fans & just general foolishness from fans & players alike in the City of Brotherly Love!

I mean, the PC line, even though it’s bull, is at least something you can pretend is a justification for bad speech. But celebrating anti-gay slurs like it’s something great to do? Sick individuals.

This statement is garbage, and any apology is meaningless. He meant what he said. The condemnation he’s getting is better than any apology he would come up with, with his personal representatives.

  51. caliviking805 says: Jul 10, 2011 12:29 AM

(Wonder if all the people sticking up for DJ would still do it if the caller called DJ the “n” word? My guess? Nope.)

Namecalling stinks and is almost always a retort used when someone has no real argument. All it does is expose people as unintelligent or backed into a corner. That’s all this is too. It’s not DJ LITERALLY insulting gay people. Now if he found out that one of his teammates was gay and called HIM names to his face, that’s a different scenario. Whatever happened to common sense and/or being able to look at incidents individually to determine what intent looks to be?

I dont know what “gay slur” he was supposed to have made, but people have the right to have their own opinion about gays, be it positive or negative. Anyone that says otherwise, are as bad as he is, because you are saying he dont have his constitutional rights of free speech. I honestly used to have the opinion that gays shouldnt marry, but actually, I truly dont even care. And I care even less about DJ making slurs, its his right.
