The official PFT position on the fourth annual retirement of Brett Favre can be summarized thusly: We won’t believe he’s done until two NFL seasons completely unfold without Favre playing.
The most likely scenario at this point would be a Roger Clemens-style effort, in which he shows up for the last half of the season to replace an injured starter on a contending team. But with the lockout lingering and teams likely to have less and less time to get ready for the 2011 season, who better to step in and play with limited prep than a guy who has proven over the last three years that he can step in and play with limited prep?
It remains a long shot, but Favre’s history tells us that it’s not impossible.
Of course, before we can get to the point where we know whether or not Favre will play, we’ll hear from those close to him.
Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, possibly milking those last few drips of national attention from a relationship with the Favre family, asked both Favre’s brother and mother about the possibility of a return.
“I would say there’s less than a 1 percent chance [he would return],” Scott Favre told Jones, via NFL.com. “He is retired.”
“I would hope he would not do it,” Bonita Favre added. “He is crazy if he does.”
Given the whole Jenn Sterger thing, linking Favre’s retirement to his sanity suggests that he’s indeed returning.
