Police: Hines Ward failed sobriety tests, hit curb

H. Wardmugshot

On Saturday, the lawyer for receiver Hines Ward said his client was not impaired when arrested for a DUI over the weekend.  The police report from the incident tells a different story.

Cops who pulled Ward over said he had bloodshot, glassy eyes, according to the Associated Press.  He failed a series of field sobriety tests, and was pulled over after Ward’s car hit a curb in Georgia.

We’re a little confused why Ward would so vehemently deny the charges when he knew he failed tests and the police report would inevitably come out.

Not owning up to the charges will only bring about more negative attention.

Yeah goes on further to prove that football players in general are typically not the smartes tools in the shed. SMDH, dude was tore up.

Because Ward is a piece of garbage. He plays the game dirty by blind siding players, taking cheap shots and overall being a jack @$$ which is why STeeler Fans love him. So All of you can start defending him now like the sheep you are. You defend your rapist QB and now a drunk driver. I guess Steeler fans would support OJ if he came there.

I believe that Hines’ agent said he was not impaired “by alcohol” when he was driving. Leaving the door open that he was impaired by something else.

  14. vbe2 says: Jul 11, 2011 5:42 PM

Did he deny drunk driving or Driving under the influence?

He might not have been drunk but he does look somewhat high in the mugshot. Maybe he was smoking weed?

  15. vargafamily1 says: Jul 11, 2011 5:42 PM

I’ve failed a series of field sobriety tests completly sober. It’s not unheard of.

  18. johnnyjagfan says: Jul 11, 2011 5:47 PM

Hines should have talked to his lawyer beforehand…you don’t have to do those dog tricks (a.k.a. roadside sobriety tests) when the cops tell you to.

  21. Deb says: Jul 11, 2011 5:49 PM

Come on. Would any guy picked up on a DUI say “I was drunk as a skunk, weaving all over the road, and need to have my butt kicked”?

That denial statement was issued by his attorney. Note terms like “our preliminary investigation,” and “not impaired” as opposed to “not drinking.” I think that’s referred to as “plausible deniability” rather than outright denial.

Hines … if you couldn’t stay in your lane or get through the alphabet, you need to have your butt kicked.

  22. joshspangler says: Jul 11, 2011 5:49 PM

    Wait, no smile Hines?

  24. vicbronco says: Jul 11, 2011 5:50 PM

Andrew Ree actually wrote: “From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving. However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction.”

“Not impaired by alcohol” is not the same as “not impaired.” It may come out that Ward was impaired by something other than alcohol once the facts have been straightened out. Or it may come out that his lawyer wasn’t being as truthful as some may hope.

  37. fringetastic says: Jul 11, 2011 6:06 PM

Yeah, cops never lie when filing out police reports… Oh wait, it does happen sometimes! I’m not saying the cops lied – or that Hines is lying, because I wasn’t there and I don’t know – but I have seen cops lie in the reports. Of course the cops get the benefit of the doubt, just like they are getting here.

I am in constant amazement listening to the Hinesward crybabys and jock sniffers try to blame the cops, the laws of the land that apply to all the rest of us or racism (even though plenty of white stars, mel gibson anyone have been arrested for dui)

Its all a conspiracy, the cops planted booze in the bar. Then when he was driving erraticlly at 3:50 am because the cops messed with his car while he was in the bar. And we all know that at that time of night, curbs just jump out in the road to play chicken. He failed the sobriety tests, that were filmed, because the cops doctored the film/

One more comment for those in denial, because they obviously do not have the IQ to figure it out:

  57. pitch87mph says: Jul 11, 2011 6:47 PM

And yet another reason why attorney’s always tell you to NEVER submit to a sobriety test–whether you actually ARE drunk (and know it) or if you’re dead sober. Sobriety tests are to do ONE thing. Collect evidence against you. And the bottom line is that people can fail them sober (I can’t pass them–vertigo and no balance due to inner ear problem), or pass them drunk. But in either case, the police report will say the same thing. “Slurred speech, red eyes, liquor smell” etc. etc. If they think you’re drunk, it’s highly like you will be arrested. If you are NOT drunk, the best thing to do is simply submit to the breathalyzer (required in many states such as AZ–or you can choose to have blood drawn at the police station–which some attorney’s suggest) and be done with it. But even in AZ, even if you pass the breathalyzer, they can still arrest you for suspicion–very broad alcohol related laws here–though you’re unlikely to be prosecuted–unless, of course, you failed your sobriety tests, too (which is why attorney’s advise you politely decline). Given Hines is a professional athlete, if he WAS drunk (and knew it), he likely thought he could pass the sobriety test anyway (and I know a drunk gymnast that did). But if he was truly sober, there’s no way he’d fail it. So either the cops are lying through their teeth, or Hines rolled the dice and came up craps. Sad to see it. Seems like a good guy.

  58. semperfi24 says: Jul 11, 2011 6:47 PM

If only a field sobriety test consisted of Hines smashing the crown of his helmet into the jaw/neck of an unsuspecting bystander…

I wish I could figure out the rules that make the censors delete posts so I could…you know…avoid those things. No bad language or anything…just poof. Why is there such a mystery as to the posting rules here???

Anyway…the basic gist was why don’t people who love to drink or do drugs to the point they are impaired just stay at home and do them to their hearts’ content? I wouldn’t care one bit if they want to do that to themselves. They’re adults and can choose that if they wish with all the legal consequences that may arise. Once they get behind the wheel they affect innocent people though so it’s everyone’s business.

Suspend him for two or three games.

    Go Steelers.

P.S. He’s still one of the NFL’s best WRs of the past 15 years and there is no such thing as a classy organization anymore. NFL players are largely idiots in general. The uniform they wear has nothing to do with that… unless they play for the Bengals.

  77. mrbigass says: Jul 11, 2011 8:38 PM

    From TMZ…….

“According to the DeKalb County Police report, the officer spotted Ward’s Aston Martin driving erratically — which Ward told the officer was because he had dropped his phone.

An officer gave Hines a “follow my finger” field sobriety test — during which the officer says Ward lacked “smooth pursuit” and suffered from nystagmus (fancy word for involuntary eye movement).

The officer says Ward also had a hard time keeping his balance during a “walk and turn evaluation.”

The report says Ward agreed to take a breathalyzer … blew .128 — the legal limit is .08 — and was arrested for DUI. DeKalb authorities tell us the .128 was an unofficial reading that is not admissible in court — and Ward refused to take a second, official test.

According to the report, Ward admitted drinking 2 Coronas … three hours before he was pulled over — however, he maintains he was not drunk at the time of his arrest.”

SOP in a DUI stop is the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. That’s where they hold up a finger and tell you to follow it with your eyes, not moving your head. Nearly 99% of people, when sober, will be able to do it without having their eyeballs bounce as the eyes move to the side (there is a very uncommon genetic thing that causes some peoples’ eyes to bounce when they are sober). Everyone that is intoxicated – on weed, booze, or what have you – will fail this test. Don’t believe me? Try it. If you are having an adult bev with a friend right now, have them look at your finger, placed between 12 and 18 inches in front of their eyes, and move it slowly to each side. If they have had enough to drink, you WILL see their eyes bounce as they track to the side (it’s actually kinda creepy the first time you see it). We do it as a fun party thing all the time to see who is getting wasted (I was on a DUI jury where we got a butt load of education on the HGN test). I will guarantee that Ward was given, and failed, the HGN test during this stop. You can’t fool it, or trick it, or cheat on it. You can, of course, lie about it afterwards, but that won’t make much of a difference during sentencing.

So many TOOLS on this Site.. Its rather Comical… All of you want to bash other teams players cause you dont like that team.. When in your own locker room, there is garaunteed to be a half a dozen or more guys with the same Legal issues!! Grow up tools!!
Hines ward Drinking and driving is Stupid and Disappointing to those of us Steeler fans who are normal people.. I dont think any of us are OK with it.. But for so many folks to start bashing the guy cause they dont like the Steelers is Ridiculous..How about we bash him just because he made a stupid decision that Could have cost himself or worse, other innocent people their lives.. it has nothing to do with football!! And those of you who call Hines ward a dirty Football player are just proving you dont know football and MOST LIKELY Never played at a level higher than Pop Warner.. Just for the Record, it is NO WHERE in any football rule book at any level that you have to only block guys that see you coming!! MORONS!! there is a football phrase called (having your head ona swivel” and from the earliest ages of playing football, coaches teach taht to their players…ITS FOR A REASON!!! your opponent is allowed to hit you when you arent looking.. now if Any of you can show me one video clip of Ward nailing a Guy IN THE BACK, then we can talk.. but my money says you cant find that clip..So get a clue..For every instance of Hines drilling a guy when he isnt looking, I can show you one of your beloved Ray Ray or Ed Reed doing the exact same thing!!! I’m a rape survivor, so rape does count for me. That’s why I take the evidence in rape cases seriously and why I spent hours reviewing the police files and witness statements in the Roethlisberger case, and I know someone who worked the case. I wouldn’t post that the evidence shows no rape occurred if it weren’t true.

Based on your comments, you are a vulgar hard-nosed broad who’s about as opposite me as it’s possible to get. That’s fine. And you’ve been dogging my posts for months now with your nasty snipes. Oh, you mean the EVIDENCE that the Georgia DA DIDN’T have against Ray Lewis. Yes, I ALWAYS see the Steeler fans point to that lack of evidence when referring objectively to that case on this site. Sorry, , but if I constantly have to hear that Ray Lewis is a murderer despite the LACK OF EVIDENCE, then you have to hear that Toothlessburger and Whines Hard are a rapist and a drunk respectively. =================================

I absolutely DO consider the Ravens to be a classy organization. Steve Bicciotti is one of the best owners in sports, and Ozzie Newsome may be the best general manager.

Stop the BS, dude. Players are drafted, and then teams (ALL teams, including the Sainted Steelers) expect them to be mature and act like adults. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Newsome is betting that some of the strong personalities in the Ravens locker room (R. Lewis, R. Rice, T. Suggs, E. Reed, etc….) will keep Smith on the right path. Will they? Time will tell.

The reason you are hearing from so many Ravens fans on here is that we are SO TIRED of hearing from HYPOCRITICAL STEELER FANS about how Ravens players spend their spare time knock over liqour stores with ski masks on, while the great Steelers NEVER have ane no any players in trouble. The Ravens have no more – and no less – trouble than the Steelers or any other team. Some of you need to think about that before you post your assinine posts about Ray Lewis. I’m out…

    ================================

Dude, we AREN’T acting like choirboys. The Ravens have certainly had their share of run-ins with the law. We just don’t make ourselves out to be the sainted franchise of the NFL like Steeler Fans do.

To be fair, I went on the “turd watch” section on this site and checked the arrest records of both the Steelers and the Ravens. Since the beginning of 2009 (as far back as the site goes), the Steelers have had two players arrested (Jeff Reed for disorderly conduct and Ward for the DUI). So how many have the Ravens had? 10? 12? Nope. TWO! One for a player who has never played a down for the team (Sergio Kindle – DUI) and one for an assistant coach (Andy Moeller – DUI). OK, so you tell me how the Ravens are any worse than the great, straight-and-narrow Steelers….I’m waiting. Hypocrites!

P.S. Before any of you Steeler apologists check my reserach, yes, Dante Stallworth is on the list. He was a Brown at the time of his arrest…not a Raven.

  124. rmm1984 says: Jul 12, 2011 9:32 AM

Theravenlives – You’re making the same point I’m trying to. I didn’t say the Ravens were worse than the Steelers. I think most teams are about the same, some just get more coverage than others. But to your point why does it make it better that the Ravens signed Stallworth after the crime?

  125. aldashex86 says: Jul 12, 2011 9:33 AM

I love how articles can bring out haters. Hines is an idiot for driving drunk, agreed. But, give the dirty player stuff a rest. He is the toughest SOB on offense in the NFL. Maybe I’m just old school but, I think if he played defense…and made the same hits that he does on offense, everyone would be praising him saying how he is like Ronnie Lott or Jack Tatum.

The fact is, no matter what the game is, Hines takes it to the limit. And if people around the NFL are so mad about contact rules (that would apply to both the Steelers and the Ravens) why do they whine whenever there is real contact?

Hines isn’t chopping at the knees, he hits people in the mouth. If you don’t like it, light him up!! There have been plenty of “bounties” on his head and I think everyone is just mad that no one has been able to collect on them. If players don’t like someone, they shut him up. Ochocinco has gotten blasted, same with T.O. He is a 180 lb WIDE RECEIVER!!! It’s not hard to find him with his gaurd down. Finnegan did.

I don’t care either way with the Steelers and Ravens but, I know if I were a Steelers fan, I wouldn’t care what Ravens’ fans said since they can’t beat the Steelers when it counts…or even when Ben is playing for that matter. And arguing crimes is pointless. Especially given the Ravens signed an already convicted murderer last year and have another accused one on their team. Those 2 trump an accused rapist and drunk driver if you ask me. And didn’t Sergio Kindle get a DUI recently?

Haha, can’t wait to watch these 2 teams play on 9/11. There will be blood.

In Roethlisberger’s rape case, the tests at the hospital actually did find human, male DNA – meaning there was sexual contact – it just wasn’t of sufficient quantity to test it against Roethlisberger’s. So, before you go calling someone a jackass for not knowing the facts, you might want to educate yourself. Otherwise, you kind of look like the jackass.

  139. theoriginalcaptainmarvel says: Jul 13, 2011 12:36 PM

Police lie all the time about the “bloodshot, glassy eyes”. Their DWI report has a check-box for that, and I guarantee you there’s never been a DWI arrest in history without that box checked. So that statement is irrelevant. Hitting the curb, that’s another story. The police car’s camera should be able to tell if the arrest was legal or not. And if the arrest was legal, then the blood-alcohol test results will tell if he was over the limit.

  140. Deb says: Jul 13, 2011 5:12 PM

    @burry81 …

She didn’t claim sexual contact, she claimed vaginal rape–full-on intercourse. When people have intercourse, they leave behind hair, semen, and other bodily fluids and/or chemicals from a condom. None of those were found in the course of the examination. The one small speck of DNA–not semen, not seminal fluid, but DNA–that was found on her person was so small and so degraded that it could not be tested for identity using the most advanced testing methods available. That’s because it was likely left behind following showering from a much earlier sexual encounter. When asked by the press if she’d had sex with anyone else that day, DA Fred Bright said he could not comment because that would be violating the accuser’s privacy.

I am thoroughly familiar with the police files, the results of the medical exam, and the comments from the authorities. Are you?
