Report: Broncos quickly realized drafting Moreno was a mistake

This has not been a great offseason for Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno.

We learned that he was likely headed for a reduced role in the Broncos backfield with the arrival of John Fox.  The new head coach said running back was their No.1 priority in free agency despite the fact the Broncos have almost no defensive tackles.

Moreno was a top-15 draft pick only two years ago, but reportedly it didn’t take long for Josh McDaniels to “privately realize he made a big mistake.”  Woody Paige of the Denver Post writes that Moreno is not what the Broncos thought.

“He hasn’t been tough, smart, motivated, if that’s what you’re asking. . . .  He’s not a great clubhouse guy. Interpret that how you want, and he’s been a wimp on the field,” Paige writes.

It’s an interesting criticism.  Moreno was billed coming out of school as a versatile player that was highly intelligent and a team-first guy.  He’s been fairly productive as a pro, but not great.

In theory, Moreno could rebuild his stock with a new staff.  In reality, most of the offensive staffers have remained last year and it sounds like Fox doesn’t love what he’s seen on tape of Moreno.

Moreno hasn’t been seen this offseason at the Broncos players-only workouts, and it sounds like he’ll be seen in a backup role in 2011.

Maybe Fox can finish the job of stripping the Broncs of any remaining talent….McDaniels started off with such a good job of that, lol!

“No Show” Moreno?…Is Bart Scott gonna make t-shirts?

  3. hobartbaker says: Jul 14, 2011 12:49 PM

Get real. Moreno led all rookie runners in 2009, and finished second in Offensive ROTY voting to Percy Harvin. He had over 1200 total yards. Last season, NO ONE could run behind the Bronco line, and lots tried. Moreno was easily the best of them and when he finally got healthy at the end of the season was averaging 80 yards per game or so. A lot more than Over The Hillis was picking up at the tail end of the year.

Dang. That’s why I’m no GM, cause I thought he would be good when I was “scouting” talent for my team last year…

Moreno did look great in college, his tapes still up on YouTube. But got hurt early his first year in Denver and never again showed the form he displayed in college.

I have never liked this kid. I remember when the Bronco’s played the Ravens in 2008, he was the biggest jerk on the field taunting the fans coming out of the tunnel and everything. Then he scored one measly TD in a game where the Ravens were killing the Bronco’s and he stood up and taunted the crowd again.

It seemed like poetic justice that the Ravens not only ended the Bronco’s undefeated streak in a thrashing but provided the blueprint that was ultimately their undoing. I think they finished the season 2-8.

  14. bjb2865 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:00 PM

Considering that Moreno was hurt for part of last year and the offense was pass happy….I guess it would look like he didnt produce. Hes not Adrian Peterson but he aint Reggie Bush either. Hes a good back, not great.

  15. qj1984 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:00 PM

    Sorry, 2009 not 2008.

  16. We'reFineThere says: Jul 14, 2011 1:01 PM

Moreno was not worth the 12th pick but that is not his own fault. I’m not really a fan but he has been better than the other first rounders in Donald Brown and Chris Wells. McCoy missed the Combine with the flu and fell to the 2nd.

  17. smartbutlazy says: Jul 14, 2011 1:04 PM

I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt until he proves he can’t run playing for Fox. Nobody could run on McD’s offense. Look at these stats, the Broncos’ LEADING rushers for each week:
    Week 1 Moreno 60
    Week 2 Moreno 51
    Week 3 Maroney 24
    Week 4 Orton 11
    Etc.

When Kyle “Lead Feet” Orton is your leading rusher with 11 Yards, you know your offense is screwed up.

  18. hobartbaker says: Jul 14, 2011 1:05 PM

The only second year running back with more career yards is Arian Foster, and that is only because Moreno missed a few games last season with injury. How is he a “disappointment”? Knosh averaged 4.3 ypc in Denver last year, while the rest averaged about 3.

  19. berniemadoffsides says: Jul 14, 2011 1:06 PM

Michael Bush would be PERFECT in Denver…

  20. goawayeverybody says: Jul 14, 2011 1:08 PM

Um, okay, so they “quickly” realized that drafting someone who gets 4.3 yards per carry was a mistake (a very solid number) and yet they did not “quickly” realize that hiring Josh McDaniels was a mistake?

    Does. Not. Compute.

  21. faderwader says: Jul 14, 2011 1:08 PM

  29. BroncoNick says: Jul 14, 2011 1:24 PM

So Josh Mcdaniels told this to Woody Paige in private?? Right… I’m guessing that if Mcdaniels actually ever said this that he wouldn’t tell it in “private” to Woody Paige.

Oh and Rosenthal… Fox has actually stated that DT is the #1 need in FA this year for the Broncos.
Get your facts straight before you write something. He has said that they will run the ball more, but he has made it clear that DT is Denvers #1 need.

Moreno hasn’t been given a real chance with the O-line Denver has had the past few years. With Orlando Franklin now, that is the first step in improving that line and creating more of a running game.
Not to say it wouldn’t be a bad thing to pick up another RB to have a 2 back system in Denver (which a lot of teams are doing now) and with the big FA coming up after the CBA gets settled, there is going to be a lot of options.

  30. gudy2shoes says: Jul 14, 2011 1:25 PM

This is blown way out of porportion. He played well last year against the team I follow. He will get his chance to show John Fox what he has, and then we will see.

  31. bronconation7 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:25 PM

Moreno’s biggest problem has been injury. He came in late as a rookie and then got injured last year. His two best linemen (Clady and Kuper) were coming off major leg injuries and he had 3 rookies on that line. He was better at blitz pickup last year and can catch the ball out of the backfield. His biggest problem has been his health. His second biggest problem is that Fox is moving to a more zone running-type system and Moreno is not a slash and go RB. Looking at the Broncos I view him as more of an asset than a problem. Hopefully Woody just gave him his needed boost of motivation.

    @rayvens,

This guy is clearly a Raider fan (hence the one and only Nation comment). As a fellow Raider fan, I can only express my thanks to Josh McDaniels for all he’s done to drag down the Broncos franchise as far as he did. Well done Josh, well done.

  33. jhorton83 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:32 PM

Yet another in a long line of McDaniels mistakes. Perhaps it would have been wiser to keep Peyton Hillis instead of trading him for a ham sandwich, aka Brady Quinn.

  34. paulitik74 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:33 PM

This maybe the only time in College or Pro Football history that Mark Richt got more talent out of a player than a NFL coach could. No one wastes talent like Mark Richt.

I’d take Knowshon in Atlanta in a second. McD wasn’t using him right.

Paige s dead wrong on this kid. If Shanahan were still in Denver, he’d have had 1500 yards.

  35. cornellsteelers says: Jul 14, 2011 1:34 PM

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT draft a RB high unless you are almost certain that he is going to be something special. It’s the most oversaturated position in the league by a wide margin.

  36. forevercorr says: Jul 14, 2011 1:35 PM

Paige likes to run his mouth. Even after McDaniels was fired, people in Denver are still searching for scapegoats. McDaniels probably didn’t love Moreno because he wasn’t a miracle in the backfield. But you look for draft day mistakes, let’s instead take a closer look at Alphonso Smith, drafted in the second at the expense of a future first. Or how about Richard Quinn, who at best will be a special teamer. There are other guys in Moreno’s position like Demarius Thomas, Robert Ayers, and Tim Tebow that are floating in the grey area between useful and wasteful, and we have to wait and see. Denver fans still have their fingers crossed on Eric Decker, and Perrish Cox would have been seen as a steal if he weren’t a scumbag. McDaniels could coach a game, but he butchered the roster and morale. But if Fox throws everyone to the wolves this year, the rebuilding process will take even longer. Based on the draft moves so far, I’m hopeful the ship is being turned around to the right direction.

I remember when in college everyone compared him to reggie bush, well come to think of it, his NFL career is pretty comparable to Reggie’s lol. There is no excuse here, a few people mentioned that he had a bad line to run behind this past year … please … Darren McFadden had a weak first 2 years but the line he had last year was/is one of the NFL worst and he had a hihglight reel season, 5 avg a carry and all. John Fox knows the run game personnel needed, he might drag Deangelo from Carolina, that would worry me, knowshown was a mcdaniels pick, how could anyone defend a mcDaniels pick? Like he is a talent guru? Knowshown is pedestrian at best, he slows down in the hole and doesn’t shift to open spaces … I watched him play at Georgia, he ran behind a crazy good line there with multiple backs getting carries and stafford at QB. He is a NFL RB but not a starter unitl he learns how to read his blocks and be more aggressive.

  44. kellyb9 says: Jul 14, 2011 1:58 PM

@rayvens – The poster you’re quoting states that they are a fan of the nation – he’s a raiders fan saying that he supports Josh McDaniels. People on this forum don’t even read what they’re quoting sometimes.. wow.

  45. mogogo1 says: Jul 14, 2011 2:01 PM

Moreno has been a disappointment given how high he was drafted, but saying Josh McDaniels soured on him means nothing. McDaniels runs hot and cold like the Katy Perry song.

Remember that he soured on Cutler before he’d even talked to the guy, wanted Cassell before settling on Orton, then traded for Brady Quinn about two weeks before drafting Tim Tebow…hated, loved, then again hated Brandon Marshall, disliked Peyton Hillis so much he wouldn’t even play him….

  46. scrotiemcb says: Jul 14, 2011 2:04 PM

Jeepers, creepers. Paige has been hating on Moreno since day one, probably because its the easiest way to feed the morons that haunt the DPO boards (and who do regular cameos here).

Its no secret that that the two-headed monster at RB is the in thing right now, and for good reason. Finding somebody to pair with Knowshon Moreno is practical and pragmatic, and hardly an indictment against the youngster who has scored 17 TD’s in his brief NFL career, and who ripped off a 5.3 ypc average over the 6 week stretch that Denver had a heathly oline in 2009. Its not like anybody tore it up in Denver last year, what with Ryan Clady at half strength, and the rest of the line riddled with injury and inexperience. Heck, anywhere south, east, north and west of Minnesota, having two quality backs is a necessity, as they even learned in Tennessee, where Chris Johnson was half the player/half the threat he was the year before despite increased opportunities.

  47. hobartbaker says: Jul 14, 2011 2:08 PM

Raider fans coming out of the ghetto for this thread, I see. “No excuses” for Moreno averaging 800 yards a season for his first two years, but no excuses necessary for McFadden averaging 400 a season his first two. Nope.

  48. shackdelrio says: Jul 14, 2011 2:08 PM

    @ BroncoNick

Here is the exact quote. Next time do some research of your own before you start blasting other people who do this for a living.

“We were 13th on offense last year. I certainly want more balance. We’ve got to run the ball more and better, and running back is our No. 1 priority [in free agency],” he said through Denver Post’s Woody Paige. “We will have the most sophisticated running team in the league.”

Google it if you don’t believe this site…

  51. hobartbaker says: Jul 14, 2011 2:22 PM

Raiders fans show up to point out what a mistake Moreno was. Compared to the mighty Darius Heyward-Bey, drafted five spots ahead of him.

  52. munchkin420 says: Jul 14, 2011 2:27 PM

KC fans should be happy if Fox keeps Moreno off the field.
Last season game one 22 for 106 rush 3 for 50 pass

game two 23 for 161 rush 1 for 14 pass

    Charles was 21 for 116 and 2 for 20 (game 2)

    Charles was14 for 41 rush and 5 for 80 (game 1)

There is more to this picture than the Wood is laying out there. Moreno’s health has been a disappointment.
He needs to get on the filed this year to keep his job at any rate. It sucks to get hurt but he is of no use to the team if he can’t stay healthy.

  53. reillyb1 says: Jul 14, 2011 2:31 PM

mogogogo1, you bring up a great point about Cutler. A lot of people try to paint Cutler as a whiner trying to get out of town, but man… based on drafting Moreno this high, trading for Brady Quinn & numerous other decisions that McDaniels made… Cutler getting his ass out of Denver was probably the smartest thing he’s ever done…

  55. macjacmccoy says: Jul 14, 2011 2:32 PM

The Broncos should have went to Merrill Reese for some rb scouting tips that year.

Weeks before the draft all he talked about was how good Shady McCoy was and how he was the best running back in the draft. And how nuts he thought it was that he was falling down draft boards and people were saying he was to small and to slow and that he would be a 3rd down back at best.

All draft day everytime 3 or 4 picks went by he would say Lesean McCoy is still on the board. When it got to the 2nd round and the Eagles pick was coming up he started rattling off players he thought the Eagles might take at positions like safety n d-line and o-line. This is the year before Westbrook got all those concussions and knee problems so no one thought they would go rb that early. But then Goodell called McCoys name and Merrill basically fell out of his seat. He was yelling and laughing like a lil kid. Saying things like “Eagles fans we just got 1 heck of a player, best back in the draft””Im telling you this kid is special”.

He was dead on too. Shady has out performed them all. He has out performed all but maybe 10 rbs in the entire league. He was what top 5 in yards per carry and I might be wrong but I think he had the most all purpose yards of any back.

My point is its kind of a shame that a guy like Merrill who is just the voice of the Eagles and admittely has no inside connections when it comes to what the Eagles think about players or might do, knew more about what makes a great rb and was better at spotting it then the entire Broncos coaching staff and scouting department.

  56. macjacmccoy says: Jul 14, 2011 2:45 PM

Saying all that its possible that Moreno is on the cusp of breaking out. Look at McFadden he was taken at the top of the draft and did absolutely nothing his first few years in the league. Old vets and mid round picks were getting more touches then him. Everyone was already labeling him another Raiders bust.

Then last year he exploded on scene. He looked like the best back in the league at times. He got slowed down in the middle of the season bc of some nagging injuries, but fought through them and got back to playing like he did in the beginning of the season.

The same problems are basically happening to Moreno that happened to McFadden in the beginning of his career. Now who knows if he will beat it like DMF did or become the bust the DMF was suppose to be. But we should know from expierence that 2 years is to short a time frame to count someone out.

  57. BroncoNick says: Jul 14, 2011 2:48 PM

    @sc5000
I follow pretty much every post and article that comes out about the Denver Broncos. Woody Paige is going to try and contort anything to make them say what he wants to hear.
This is an excerpt straight from Denverbroncos.com when coach Fox had a “fan forum” phone call after the draft.

On looking to add a running back:
“We did want to address the running back situation in the draft and weren’t able to get that done. We knew going in we weren’t going to be able to fill all our needs, but that’s another area that we will look to in free agency. The things we didn’t address are corner, obviously the D-line has been made a lot of…running back is an area where we need to acquire some depth, and we are going to run the ball more to balance our offense.”

“You can’t have enough of them. If you’re going to run the ball and make it a priority to run the ball, you do need a few guys there that are active on game day. We’re going to be doing everything we can to get better there.”

As I stated in my previous post he has made it aware that we need depth and running back (running the 2 back system)
But when you read that excerpt you will see that he says “obviously the D-line has been made a lot of…”
He mentioned it numerous times that it is imperative that we get some help at the DT position.

Actually, the real kick in the azz is that Clown McDaniels still has a million dollar contract to coach in the NFL.

There really isn’t very much accountability for incompetence or piss poor performance in the NFL.

You just get shuffled around to another goldmine position.

why is there so much hate on moreno???? From the broncos games i did see…every time he touched the ball, he produced yards.

  62. edgarh21 says: Jul 14, 2011 3:40 PM

You must be an idiot to draft Beanie Wells in the first round, anyone with half a brain could have seen that he wasn’t going to be that good.

And I agree scubasteve4930, Moreno has been very productive for the broncos. He produced yards. Now i don’t know what goes on in the locker room that may have turned people off. But check his yards. Yea he got hurt last year, but look at games after he went down. How many rushing yards did they get a game after he went down (DON’T INCLUDE TEBOW’S). I should know all other RB’s on the broncos performed poorly, had them on my fantasy team cus I picked running backs last hahaha. Still won my league.

Last season, NO ONE could run behind the Bronco line, and lots tried. Moreno was easily the best of them and when he finally got healthy at the end of the season was averaging 80 yards per game or so. A lot more than Over The Hillis was picking up at the tail end of the year.
    —————————————————–

That all said, you’d trade Moreno to get Hillis back in a split second. Fact.

So you say Hillis dropped off at the end of the year? You also mention that “lots” of runners tried to gain yards behind the Broncos line. Funny, I don’t remember Hillis having much help at all. And with all the help Moreno had and all the help Hillis *didn’t* have, let’s look at some numbers:

    MORENO, 2010: 779 yards, 4.3 avg, 7 TDs.
    HILLIS, 2010: 1177 yards, 4.4 avg, 13 TDs.

If Hillis hadn’t been beaten down by the end of the year, his average would have been ridiculous. The only reason he wore down is because it was obvious to all the teams playing Cleveland that their passing game was practically non-existent and they were running Hillis constantly, to the point that defenses just started stacking the box.

All that, and “Over the Hillis” still destroyed Moreno’s numbers.

    Sour grapes much?

    “When I read this…..

““He hasn’t been tough, smart, motivated, if that’s what you’re asking. . . . He’s not a great clubhouse guy. Interpret that how you want, and he’s been a wimp on the field,” Paige writes.”

I thought I was reading about Vince Young.”

As an NFL fan, we can only express our thanks to Al Davis for all he’s done to drag down the Raiders franchise as far as he did as he falls more and more into senility and dementia. Well done Skeletor, well done.

All I will say about Knoshon is his name is stupid and thak you J.D. because I think the Eagles would have taken him. We ended up with Shady and by far Shady is the better pro. Its not even close. McCoy does everything on the field. He may havea tiny bit of a mouth problem but his team loves him. And heck, half the Eagles team talks a lil bit to much but i don’t mind as long as they keep backing it up on the field.

Mostly though this is another example of how hard it is to scout NFL talent. Anyone who watched Knowshon in college would have thought he was going to be great. Its tough to scout these players and running back is the hardest position of all.

This is why if i owned a team I would never ever draft a running back in the first round. I mean of all the starting running backs in the NFL ,32, how many were 1st round picks?? 5 ?? maybe ?? And how many were undrafted 5-6?? Its just to tough. So i never blame a coach for getting it wrong on RB’s but I think you can blame them for drafting any running back in the first round.

I think Rita Moreno would be a better fit in the Denver backfield.

Eagles took McCoy in the middle of the 2nd round. Glad McCoy was well off the board by then.

If Moreno was sooooooooo talented what happened last year when OAK came to “Mile low” stadium? 59 to 14 ….. Mc fadden had 5 TD’s for your information.

    Moreno: 14 rushes 53 yards 3.8 a carry
and the next time we played when jesus was your starting QB moreno: 4 att for 5 yards 1.3 a carry.

OAK is always one of the worst run defenses in the league every year. Moreno seems to be a beast the more I look at his stats lol.

Let me know when his year 3 matches McFadden’s year 3 stats.
    CAR 223 YDS 1,157 AVG 5.2 TDS 7

    REC 47 507yards 10.8avg 3 TD
