Lions high on Justin Durant

AP

Despite a great-looking defensive line, the Lions defense has a lot of question marks. Their linebacker situation looks nearly as dire as their secondary, with both areas needing to be addressed in free agency.

Longtime Lions writer Mike O’Hara, now working for FoxSportsDetroit.com, writes the team has a very specific wish list at linebacker.  They like both Jaguars linebacker Justin Durant and Titans linebacker Stephen Tulloch, but Durant apparently has the edge in Detroit’s view.

Durant would play on the outside, which would likely keep DeAndre Levy at middle linebacker.  We’re not sure there will be a huge market for the oft-injured Jaguar, so the Lions should be able to get their man.

  1. The Lions can snatch whoever they please in free agency ……. It won’t change their 5 or 6 win season due in 2011 …… The Lions lack play-makers & Tulloch & Durant just won’t fill this need ….. If either was a true playmaker, they wouldn’t be available as free agents …….

    Lion Fans seemed to have forgotten that the Lions started out 2-10 in 2010 …… 6-10 was the best they could do in 2010 ……. It’ll be the same in 2011 …….

  2. They should really try to sign them both. They need them both to ensure a solid LB corps for the full season.

  3. Durant came to Jacksonville a machine but since we have a defensive head coach (Del Rio) that is unable to develop talent Durants career has been lack luster. With the right coaching Durant will be a beast at OLB.
    Quick…. Someone name me one defensive player that has gotten better under Jack Del Rio’s tutelage? **Crickets***

    Mathis=overated

  4. I think the Lions staff has been “high” most of the time when evaluating talent for nearly the last 50 years.

    Is that the latest name for weed? Lions are definitely high on something!

    lol hate to tell this dumbass but the lions are a respected team now. the bengals voted the worst team in all sports.

    Hate to tell this dumbass but going 6-10 doesn’t make a team respectable…

    The Bengals being voted worst team in sports only means that the Lions can come up short in any contest…

    So nobody else wants him , but the Lions are high on him??? That sounds like the Lions.

    Daryl Smith

  9. @therillest: How about Marcus Stroud, John Henderson, Daryl Smith and Mike Peterson? Durant was and still is a machine,but unfortunately, like Mike Sims-Walker, he gets injured too often. Then we’re stuck with starting Russell Allen.

  10. As a lions fan i would love to see us get both Tulloch and Durant which is possible both player will be great linebackers. Durant will be cheap and Tulloch a bit more pricey. Then if we get both of those player maybe we can snag Richard Marshall at CB and Eric Wright for the right price both very talented CB that have shown they have a lot of potiental but had a rough season last year because they were on crappy teams that got no pressure to the QB.

    @boneyardbuc:
    Normally I’d give kudos to the Bucs for all the improvements they’ve made. But since you’re a troll who can’t recognize the accomplishments of other up-and-coming teams, I’ll just leave you with the reminder that it was Tampa who gave the Lions their first road win in 3yrs, whereupon this team you feel unworthy of respect also knocked your team out of the playoffs. You might benefit by tempering your rabid fandom with some perspective. In any case, the respect being given by the other teams & players more than compensates for your impotent insults. See you in week 1!

    Ok so first going after the lions and/or their fans is like kicking a puppy with a broken leg. Way to be there tough guy !

    Second, So by your logic. Guys like Nnamdi and Joseph and all the other great players over the last 20 years that changed teams due to free agency and that includes Reggie White are not “playmakers” because they were all free agents ?? Drrr

    Third I bet the Lions finish second in the north this year. I think the QB will finally be healthy and the defense will look really good because of the line. I wouldn’t want the Eagles to have to play them they are going to be tough. I predict 9-7 or maybe even with some luck 10-6 and a wild card. Do not sleep on lions this season.

    Now on to the post. I love both guys. But if i had to take one it would be Tulloc he stays healthy more and he knows the system. But when healthy Durant is one of the most underrated line backers in the game. I was hoping my Eagles would look at him as well considering we really only need a guy for a year or so till Casey mathews is ready to play every down. Either way I hope the lions can get the right players and really make a push this year. I for one will be routing for them in every game unless they play my birds of course.

  13. 2nd in the North? So all the sudden just because suh n fairley are together they best DL in NFC?

    Haha gimme a break, Peppers best Defensive Player in NFC North. Suh is a beast, but Fairley hasn’t played a down. They can get either guy, not going to change their fortunes much.

    Bear Down

  14. The Lions already had arguably the best D-Line in the division before the draft. People only focus on Suh, Vanden Bosch and Fairly for some reason. Suh and Avril are young and improving. Vanden Bosch missed the last 6 games last year. Corey Williams as a third DT is ridiculous. They have very good depth on the ends.
