I find it ironic that one of the reasons the players are on strike are for better health benefits for players and for retired players.

The Harrison want to allow helmet on helmet hits, which is all the NFL is really enforcing (and to prevent spearing). The players who tackle like this do so because THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO TACKLE.

Anyone remember Dante Wesley's hit on Smith after he called a fair catch?

@mswravens, dickroy, and finsbooyah ... thank you :)

@bobzilla ...

You're never going to understand me when it comes to Roethlisberger. I don't have to like him personally to passionately argue the evidence in his case. And I can have more respect for Harrison as a player than I have for Ben, but still be vehemently opposed to James in this situation.

It doesn't matter if I live in Fla. or next door to the stadium, thanks to modern technology, I'm as able to keep up with the team as you are ... unless you're personally connected to Steelers personnel. And I know a few football players and how they communicate. Don't underestimate James; he's smarter than people give him credit for being. There is a big difference between being politically correct and demonstrating common courtesy and common sense. James isn't a five-year-old with no filter from his brain to his mouth. He was a center attraction on media day at the Super Bowl and was very careful in what he elected to say. He knows how to buffer himself when he chooses.

I don't care how polarizing Roethlisberger has been in the locker room. He is the leader of the offense and if James has a problem with him, he should take it up in private. And he certainly had no business attacking Rashard publicly. Roethlisberger seems to play better the more people throw at him. But running back psyches can be delicate. I don't want to wind up with a ground-game version of Limas Sweed because of Harrison's big mouth. Besides, it's not true. Mendenhall isn't a fumbling machine. Matthews forced that fumble; otherwise Rashard's fumble stats are great.

I'm a very tolerant person, but throwing teammates under the bus is a big issue for me. So is the photo that went with that article. Although I knew he was innocent, I thought Ben needed that suspension to knock some sense into him and remind him that he's not more important than the team. I think the Steelers need to sit James for at least a game for the same reason.

And bobzilla ... keep an open mind about Ben going forward. I've read your posts and agree with you on the performance issues. I've always felt he was immature and unwilling to do the work to develop his natural gifts. But people can grow up. He worked hard with that QB coach during his suspension and did take the blame for the SB loss. Cowher and Hines say they've seen a change. Let's see if he keeps walking the talk.

Ha yea it is common football sense that you do NOT lead a receiver coming across the middle against a zone defense. Instead you throw to the window in the zone, while the receiver settles. You learn that in high school football.

——————————————-

You might want to go back and re-watch the tape before you accept that lame excuse. The WR catches the ball in stride and runs three steps before getting speared in the head with a helmet as he tries to turn toward up field. Had he settled into the zone, stopped and made a catch, he would have just been speared in the head a little closer to the center of the field. The problem wasn't the throw, it was that Harrison uses a poor and illegal technique that until last season he was allowed to get away with.

You couldn't be more right. It's amazing how many people scoff at the idea that McCoy was not supposed to lead his receiver on that particular play. Boggles my mind that people can watch 17 weeks of football plus playoffs for years and still not understand basic strategies.

By the time this commisoner is finished he will have his fingerprints all over the game. It will have changed so much football won’t be football as we know it today.

He will go down as the worst commish that the game has ever seen."

Goodell works for the Owners. Therefore he is the voice of the Owners. Therefore he is doing what the Owners want. Therefore it's really the Owners' fingerprints. Therefore Harrison should be mad at the Owners.
Correct?

Deb: Believe it or not, but Harrison talks the way REAL professional football players talk. He's not a politician who says poltically correct things; he's a guy who talks the way he plays the game. He's ruthless and unwavering.
Harrison plays his position far superior than Roethlisberger plays his position, evident by Harrison's pro bowl appearances, postseason awards and the recent NFL players Top 100 poll...
There has never been a more polarizing figure in Pittsburgh sports history than Roethlisberger. Talk about expendable, Roethlisberger should have been shown the door a long time ago.
I don't know how anyone who lives in the south and out of the Pittsburgh loop could possibly understand the disruptions that Roethlisberger has caused since his arrival in 2004.
You can believe that if Harrison is saying it, then most of his teammates are in total agreement. Harrison obviously speaks for the ``silent majority.''

@Deb - as usual, excellent posts...and thanks for sparing me the need to reply to deeowens11.

My question about this writer is this: is he a reporter or a columnist? If he's a reporter, then report the story, don't whitewash it, don't tell your subject to tone it down for the good of his team, don't hide other relevant compelling comments, yada, yada, yada, JUST REPORT THE FACTS!!! ...uncolored by your obvious man crush on the subject of your article. If you are that lacking in objectivity, you have no business writing the article.

If he's a columnist, then he can say what he wants.
My question about this writer is this: is he a reporter or a columnist? If he’s a reporter, then report the story, don’t whitewash it, don’t tell your subject to tone it down for the good of his team, don’t hide other relevant compelling comments, yada, yada, yada, JUST REPORT THE FACTS!!! …uncolored by your obvious man crush on the subject of your article. If you are that lacking in objectivity, you have no business writing the article.

If he’s a columnist, then he can say what he wants. It’s his opinion in an opinion piece.,,in which case, the next relevant question is “what are your qualifications?” In other words, why the H should I care what your opinions are on Harrison, Goodell, illegal hits, leading a receiver, etc…???

“Massaquoi is coming across the middle and only an idiot kid quarterback is going to lead his receiver — lead his receiver! — into a zone knowing that James Harrison is lurking back there,” Solotaroff said.

While Solotaroff is an idiot, he is partially correct with this statement. QBs do need to be aware of where they are leading their WRs. Is a short gain worth potentially leading that WR into a big hit and subsequently an injury that could keep him off the field for a couple games? No. But that doesn't excuse making an illegal tackle.

I love how he completely threw Harrison under the bus by announcing that he gave Harrison permission to lie to Ben and say that he "twisted" Harrison's words. It keeps his name/article making headlines, so smart business move on his part.

James needs to be suspended. It wouldn't even bother me if they cut him loose. Yes he was valuable to the team, but not since he put himself above the team and bad mouthed his team mates.
Ha yea it is common football sense that you do NOT lead a receiver coming across the middle against a zone defense. Instead you throw to the window in the zone, while the receiver settles. You learn that in high school football.

Thanks doctor football lol

so wait..as a qb your not suppose to lead your wideouts....i guess we are goin to see a lot of 5-10 yard routes where wr's run really fast then stop turn around and stand there hoping no one covers you and your qb throws you the ball..and for long passes..hey run 30 yards down field turn around and put your hands up when your ready for me to throw the ball..i gotta make sure its safe before i throw it your way..hahah..oh man i cant wait for the flag football lockout to end...

Roethlisberger needs to be called out for numerous reasons. He made a lot of progress last year working the short passing game, then threw all of that progress away (literally) in the postseason. As a student of the game, he is getting an F.

Mendenhall just needs to shut up. Fumbling in the Super Bowl counts as 10 regular season fumbles. Bettis had the same problem. He didn't fumble a lot, but when he did it was a doozy.

The writer is correct about McCoy (and the Browns' offensive coordinator). The offense runs a play where the proper defense technique is to punish the receiver severely for catching the ball in such a stupid spot, and somehow it's the defender's fault the Browns can't play offense properly. If you want to stop concussions, you need to fine the people who are calling these plays that put players in bad positions.

The offensive players and coaches don't care about player safety, why should the defensive players and coaches?

Its amazing how many people who watch football, don't understand basic principles. When a defense is playing a zone, a WR or TE finds an open spot, STOPS, and gets thrown the ball. Leading a WR into a zone is asking for a highlight hit. Same thing happened to Desean Jackson when he got knocked out, a young QB, Kolb and a young WR who lacked experience did the same thing and got the same result.
