49ers G.M. says team won’t be “major players” in free agency

The 49ers have a lot to accomplish after the lockout ends, but don’t expect them to spend crazy money in free agency to do so.

We’re not going to be major players. From a philosophical standpoint, we’re not going to be major players in free agency,” G.M. Trent Baalke told Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News Thursday.

Baalke envisions building the team through the draft, making the right free agent value purchase or two, and re-signing the right players.  Of all of San Francisco’s free agents this year, Baalke admitted Dashon Goldson will be the team’s biggest priority to bring back.

“I think that’s fair to say,” Baalke said.

Also look for them to make bringing back center David Baas a priority.  At quarterback, Baalke says he is open to bringing in a solid veteran if the right one comes along.  (At the right price.)

“If we can add a player to this team that’s going to make us better, we’re going to do it,” Baalke said.

In case you wondered, the weed in the SF Bay area is incredible.

I don’t know why but I really have a strong feeling this is gonna be a decent 49ers team this year….Like 8-8 or 9-7 with maybe a wildcard spot.

I also think Alex Smith is going to be more consistent then we’ve ever seen him. Like instead of being the guy who puts up 1 good game followed by 3 bad games(the way he played all year last season) we could see an even every other game good performance type of season.

It also helps that they play in the worst division in football.

I dont get why FO’s play their hand to the media. Just say nothing. Regardless if it’s just free agency or not, why tell the rest of the league what you’re thinking. It liking playing poker with your cards face up. As a Niners fan, it doesnt make since to me.

He’s following the Packers blueprint. The key is you have to draft well or you’re screwed.

    @mrplow3
9-7 ain’t gonna get a wild card spot in the NFC. You have the Bears, 2 teams from the NFC South, and 2 teams from the NFC East fighting for 2 spots. At least two of those teams are gonna get 10 or 11 wins.

I don’t think that they need to go crazy with free agents neway. They should just be trying to resign the key guys (Franklin, Goldson, maybe Lawson) then get a couple of free agents. Hopefully someone like Sidney rice or something

As a 49er fan I’m glad to hear this. Really, who needs FA’s. Lets just continue to hover around .500, never make the playoffs in a crappy division and tarnish what was once a great legacy.
Who needs Sydney Rice when you have Crabtree stinking up the joint, who needs Asomugha when you have Clements, and a pass rush? Haven’t seen one of those in over a decade.

The niners will finish 6-10 and miss the playoffs for what the tenth straight year now. It’s really been that long?

9-7 will get you in the playoffs a team from the NFC west has to make it!

FOR ALL THE 49ER HATERS WERE COMING BACK TO DOMINATE LIKE WE DID THE 80’S N 90’S SO ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN!

…yeah, why should they be big players in free agency? After all the 49ers are SO CLOSE to just DOMINATING the NFC West because Balke is so astute at drafting impact players like Michelle Crabtree..!

They didn’t dominate the 90’s. What they did do in the 90’s deserves an asterisk for cheating perhaps even more than the Pats deserve one for Spygate.

The Niners are so far below the cap, they’re going to HAVE to be major players to meet the salary floor. Not counting what they’ll need to keep Lawson and/or Goldson, they’re at only 62M in base salaries.

  21. biggerballz says: Jul 15, 2011 2:52 PM

the niners are like the bucs both teams will vote against the new cba with the bengels because they rather not spend 90% of the cap.

The Yorks and the people they hire are so inept I can’t believe it. I just want to see playoff football in San Francisco again! Even if we’re out in the first round, I just want to see it!

When I watch America’s Game episodes of past 49ers Champions it makes me want to cry. Ownership has taken this team to the brink of NFL’s skid row. I have zero confidence in Balke, his fingerprints have been on the last several unproductive drafts. Jed is at least trying, Eddie made similar coaching/ GM hiring mistakes in the 80’s before finding Walsh. Hopefully Harbaugh can turn this sh#z franchise around. If Balke’s draft reaches bust again this year, fire his @ss. Watching the 49ers of the last several years pisses me off to no end.

49er fans in deep denial saying they don’t need FAs. Same idiots that worship Barry bonds

  26. forty9asty says: Jul 18, 2011 2:24 PM

I sure as hell hope this is just “smoke and mirrors” from the 9ers front office. Sure, good teams can be built from within the draft pool, but acquiring proven players and leadership from the Free Agency pool is a critical part of any successful franchise. Sometimes you just can’t get that lucky drafting an exceptional player, sometimes you actually have to pay in order to get the right pieces to your puzzle. Maybe Nnamdi is asking too much, but his position is one of need for this team. Honestly, with this division being admittedly the worst in football, now is the time to spend a little more to be the top dog. The label of the worst division in football won’t last long. Look at the moves Arizona is making. Short of a QB, there aren’t that many missing pieces there to make them a quality football team. The clock is ticking…let’s hope Baalke was crossing his fingers when he made those comments.

P.S. At least he said they would consider bringing in a veteran QB. Lets hope he wasn’t lying about that part
