Romo in the mix at celebrity golf tournament

Tony Romo, Michael Jordan, Jon Miller, Tom Randolph AP

Tony Romo said on Sportscenter Saturday morning that he plans to get the Cowboys together on the day training camp is scheduled to start, whether the lockout is over or not.

In the meantime, Romo wants to finish out his offseason strong with a victory at the American Century Golf Classic in Lake Tahoe.  Romo is in a tie for fourth after the first day, behind Jack Wagner, Jeremy Roenick, and Mike Modano.  He’s tied with Rick Rhoden and Brett Hull.

We always hear what a fantastic golfer Romo is, so he’s overdue to win one of those things.  If celebrity golf is your thing, the action starts at 3 p.m. ET on NBC Saturday.  If not, maybe go outside on what will be the quietest weekend of football news until mid-February.

Where’s Brett Favre? With him not playing, does this mean another season? I hope not!!!!!!!!!! I’m sick of this clown.

Don’t forget, he was invited and accepted a few yrs ago when he first retired from the Packers.

Ben Roethlisberger’s making a charge, and has birdied a few reluctant back holes. None are pressing charges though.

Wish him well. I hope he wins. He might not win much else.

Yeah no wins since he and Mark Walker won the Adams Golf Pro-Scratch Championship in April.

It what he do a golfer. The cowgirls need a QB bad their record speak to that.
Any time your draft pick is before the Lions that tell the world something.

Maybe if he’d focused more on Fball and less on Golf, he wouldn’t choke so much.

Ten years from now when Romo is retired with no ring or more then 3 playoff wins, anyone that watches the NFL especially those funny NFL Networks Top 10 will look back at his career and constantly show pictures of him golfing like he’s retired already, dating famous women and screwing up that snap. As an Eagles fan I could care less, but even I think he might want to work harder on his legacy as it relates to football. If you spend so much time golfing and not enough on football, well Steve Spurrier’s career in the pros (playing & coaching) speaks for itself.

Romo’s golfing and messing around with celebrities AGAIN?

  9. hobartbaker says: Jul 16, 2011 2:09 PM

Guy plays golf like a goddamn hockey player.

  10. themitchdraft says: Jul 16, 2011 2:37 PM

Tony Romo needs to decide: golf or football. Dedicate yourself to one or never win anything meaningful at both.

Focus on golf Danny White… Focus on golf.

  12. axlviking says: Jul 16, 2011 3:57 PM

Hopefully for Tony, the match doesn’t come down to a playoff.

You realize he’s 5-3 against your Eagles including 1-0 in the playoffs, right?

  14. manofaiki says: Jul 16, 2011 6:47 PM

With Jon Kitna under center this Cowboys team went 5-3 over the second half of the season once Jason Garrett took over.

We have never seen Romo with Garrett as his head coach. If Garrett could get Kitna playing like that, I can’t wait to see what Romo does.

Tony Romo – he gets the girls, plays better golf than you and starts in the NFL. Get better soon haters.

Not saying they’ll go to the Super Bowl but they should at least make a deep playoff run if the last 8 games were any measure. They lost 3 games by a combined 7 points. This year they will be even better under new a mostly new coaching staff that Garrett has brought in.

It’s good for the hater’s souls to kick the Cowboys while they are down. Hope you got all your licks in last year, because look out, here the come on the rise!

    @ melonnhead

Seriously that’s the only part you got from what I said? After 5 season he’s only got 1 playoff win and it was over a team he played for the third time in a season now that’s impressive.

  16. mrcowpatty says: Jul 16, 2011 7:46 PM

And you wonder why Romo sucks as an NFL quarterback.

No, I got more than that out of it. You think Romo needs to work harder because his “NFL legacy” needs improvement. You’re talking about a guy that no team even thought enough of to draft. He worked his way up from undrafted practice squad fodder to starting QB in the NFL. In fact he’s one of the winningest QBs in the NFL. I completely ignored your “legacy” comment because you are clearly out of your mind if you don’t think that he has already outperformed *all* expectations, except maybe his own. You don’t get to the NFL without working hard, in the first place. You don’t go from less than Mr. Irrelevant to starting QB of any team without working hard. You don’t stay in the NFL without working hard. If you truly think that Tony Romo doesn’t work hard enough at football, then I have to say that you’re not very good at critical thinking. So there’s your response to the rest of your comments. I tried to be nice, I tried to ingore your disability but you insist on putting it out there on blast so there you go.

Vick doesn’t have any playoff wins in over 6 years, by the way. What now? Does he need to work harder on his legacy, too? Do you think that Mr. First Overall Draft Pick doesn’t work hard enough or do you save that type of dumbassery for Tony Romo? And don’t you dare try to make excuses for the convicted felon. Nobody put him in federal prison but himself.

  18. melonnhead says: Jul 16, 2011 8:06 PM

Romo teed off with Michael Jordan and John Elway yesterday, Elway and John Smoltz today. Wow. Lots of other NFL guys playing in this tournament including Aaron Rodgers, Carson Palmer, Tim Tebow, Matt Ryan, Kyle Boller, Ronde Barber, AJ Hawk, Jack Del Rio, Matt Schaub, and Wes Welker.

  19. melonnhead says: Jul 16, 2011 8:31 PM

Oh I *know* a Rams fan isn’t talking about QB’s that suck.

  20. duanethomas says: Jul 16, 2011 9:35 PM

Didn’t Bill Parcells tell this guy don’t be a celebrity quarterback….we have enough of those?

  21. brysum14 says: Jul 16, 2011 10:20 PM

Only an idiot at this point doesn’t think Romo is a good quarterback (he’s 1st in yards per attempt and touchdowns per throw in the NFL since he’s recieved the starting gig) as well as a bigger idiot for thinking golf has anything to do with playoff losses.

Defense and lack of running game have a lot more to do with playoff losses (I get it, botched snap, although the boys’ aren’t even in that game without Romo). If you think there is a correspondence between what a guy does in his free time to the way he prepares and performs as a quarterback, then obviously you also think SNL host Peyton Manning should have spent the opening monologue studyiing his playbook and Brady should eat footballs for breakfast dinner and desert.

Please quit being moronic sports fans, as I refuse to call you a football fan for your idiocy.

    —————————————————————

Yeah but no team with Parcells on the payroll has won a playoff game since January of 1999 so what does he know? He’s a celebrity coach.

  23. duanethomas says: Jul 17, 2011 12:23 AM

@melonhead. Great point!……but at this point that celebrity coach has 2 SuperBowls wins to ZERO Superbowl appearances. He’s been to the mountain top, while celebrity QB hasn’t sniffed it. See my point genius?

  24. tbpdog says: Jul 17, 2011 8:22 AM

Tony Romo ran Dallas’ offseason workouts this year, where they have had the best turnout in the NFL, or at worst on par with the Saints and Colts (45+ players). Last year he gave up a chance to qualify for the US Open, so all this “doesn’t focus on football stuff” is ignorant, Aaron Rodgers has played this thing for the last couple years too, even before he had his 1st playoff win, Matt Ryan…guess they don’t care about football too?

lol@Eagle fans. Your starting QB didn’t show up to your off season workouts, which sometimes drew 5-6 players. Heck, Mcnabb had to come up and work out with some of your players because Vick wouldn’t.

Congrats on two Super Bowl wins from the pre-free agent and salary cap eras, I guess?

  26. melonnhead says: Jul 17, 2011 9:29 AM

another thing duanethomas, its not like he was out partying at a night club with TMZ snapping pics of him slurping body shots out of Lindsey Lohan’s bellybutton, he was playing in a celeb golf tournament for charity. Do you really think that’s what parcells meant?

  27. duanethomas says: Jul 17, 2011 11:22 AM

Yes, that’s exactly what he meant. Meredith. Staubach and Aikman.

Craig Morton. Danny White. Tony Romo.

Get it now melonbrain. Also congrats to Walsh, Landry, Noll, Lombardi and all the other great pre- free agency, salary cap Multiple Super Bowl Winners.

  28. baronvonmonocle says: Jul 17, 2011 11:30 AM

This is outrageous. Any quarterback with only one playoff win* needs to concentrate on football 24/7. He should sleep, practice, study, play and nothing else. To ensure this, Jerry should rehire Pacman’s bodyguard to put him in a cryogenic chamber at all other times.** Enjoyment of life can wait until he retires and his wife looks like someone most PFT posters could get.

*This is why it’s okay for Ryan and Schaub to golf. They don’t have any playoff wins.
**Once the lockout ends, of course.

You sure get riled up when someone disagrees with you for a guy that named himself after one of the more notoriously moody never-was’s in NFL history!

You’re really funny bringing up Dandy Don Meredith. He was a well-known celebrity QB shmoozer and partier. He even married some other celebrity’s ex. Of course there was no TMZ back then so how could you know this? The mention of Aikman’s a laugher, too. He was in several movies while he was QB of the Cowboys. He was on Coach, King of he Hill, The Simpsons, are you kidding me? He even recorded several country-western songs and dated a country western star for years and was linked to several other celebrities, fool. Of course Staubach was Mr. Family Man when it came to that stuff.

  30. melonnhead says: Jul 17, 2011 12:50 PM

Oh yeah, as far as those coaches you mention are concerned, none of them coached in the free agency/salary cap eras. Unlike Parcells. Get it?

  31. duanethomas says: Jul 17, 2011 7:45 PM

    @melonhead.

I see what you are, I get your man love for him.

    You’re a Romosexual.

Keep defending him and we’ll take this subject up again once the season starts.

I will win, because Romo is happy just being a celebrity QB, and SuperBowl wins is not on his agenda.

Duane Thomas was a SuperBowl Champ and MVP…what does Antonio Romo have????

  32. baronvonmonocle says: Jul 18, 2011 12:09 AM

When was Duane Thomas ever Super Bowl MVP?

  33. 1bigtex says: Jul 18, 2011 11:00 AM

    @ duanethomas

Duane Thomas was an exceptional talent who basically smoked himself out of the league, dude. That’s a great deal more tragic than being a very good golfer who plays during the off-season.

  34. manofaiki says: Jul 18, 2011 3:55 PM

Romo plays golf in the off season for charity and people have a meltdown over it. Other plays head to Vegas and blow $100,000’s on gambling and hookers and nobody says anything. Maybe the gambling and the hookers helps their football.
