Cedric Benson arrested, again

With one unresolved legal issue possibly affecting his value on the free-agent market, Bengals running back Cedric Benson has a new one with which to contend.

Benson has been arrested and jailed in Travis County, Texas.  He’s charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member.

The arrest, first reported within the hour by Ricky Doyle of Your News Now, occurred early Sunday.  According to records available online, Benson was booked at 6:42 a.m. local time.

Benson, who was cut by the Bears in June 2008 after completing two thirds of the boating-driving-flying-while-intoxicated Trifecta (allegedly), resurrected his career in Cincinnati during the 2008 season.  He rushed for 1,111 yards in 2010 and 1,251 in 2009.

The arrest, if the Bengals are willing to overlook it, makes his return to Cincinnati even more likely, given that there won’t be much of an alternative market for his services.

Meanwhile, Marvin White can take some consolation in the fact that he’s not the most recent member of the team to be arrested.  And now Pacman’s arrest from only a week ago suddenly seems like a faded memory.

All (or at least most) kidding aside, three Bengals have been arrested in a week.  Three.  We realize that owner Mike Brown has a higher tolerance for problem children given that he can get them on the cheap, but at some point he needs to re-evaluate this policy.

In fairness to the Bengals, the organization had been doing a good job lately of keeping guys on the right path, before the lockout prevented the team from interacting with the players in any way.  For this franchise in particular, the lockout can’t end quickly enough.

  1. “The arrest, if the Bengals are willing to overlook it,”:

Hahaha….I like how you added the tongue-in-cheek caveat there.

    Well done.

  2. Is that why their uniforms are orange? So that they can go straight to prison without a clothes change?

  3. “He’s charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member.”

A family that assaults together, stays together.

  4. WHO-DEY?

This team is an embarassment at every level for both the league and Cincinnati.

    Bad Owner – check
Bad GM – oh wait we dont have one, back to the Bad Owner – check x2
    Hapless Coaching Staff – check
    Bad On-Field Performance – check
    Bad Off-Field Performance – check
Bad Stadium Deal for Taxpayers – check
Starting QB would rather retire than play here – check
Presumed Starting RB arrested again – check

I cannot think of a single positive they bring to either the league or city. The league would be better off contracting them or moving them

  5. I wonder if anyone can seriously answer this question: How many Bengals have been arrested since Marvin Lewis has been head coach?

  6. When does Goodell FINALLY suspend this jerk?

I mean, I know he isn’t the uncharged 6-5 whitey QB from Pittsburgh but enough is enough.

  7. OK, were are all the Bengals fans that were enjoying the Hines Ward DUI last week? Come on, Dont disappear now!! Your Team is in the Spot light..So lets hear you defend the scum of society that IS YOUR BENGALS TEAM!!!

  8. And now I need a new backup running back in fantasy football…

  9. Ray Lewis, it turns out, was right on when he predicted an uptick in guys getting in trouble during the lockout. Too much time on their hands

Lots of time to booze it up and get into trouble in bars or have domestic problems.

  10. He’ll end up in New England, hold the camera for a few weeks, then Billy will plug him in, he’ll have a decent season!

  11. The lockout lookup continues. If it ends too soon Bengals will need work release to field a team.

  12. Well, as the player arrests on other teams kept piling up throughout the lockout, i knew if i kept pointing out how Bengal players were staying out of trouble it would come back to haunt me… this crow sandwich i’m having for lunch tastes like crap… nice pulling a trifecta fellas. smh.

  13. The family member when faced with the ending of economic support by Benson will refuse to testify and charges will be dropped IMO.

And the family that preys together, strays together?

  16. And as we enter the 4th quarter of the offseason, the Steelers can feel the Bengals breathing down their necks in the AFC North.

Hey now, don’t go nuts….the rest of us enjoy the weeks our teams get to play the Bengals. So they bring that to the league.

Someone has to be the Brooklyn Brawler.

  18. Can you imagine if Benson & Talib had a joint family gathering? The National Guard would have to be mobilized.

  19. Oh wow, just one after another… Well back to the cellar we go, bengals 2 – 14.. both wins of course against the clowns..

    Thank you!

  21. Somebody on Twitter pointed out that the last time the Bengals were arrested at this rate, we had a winning team, so bring it on. LOL.

Seriously you can’t really blame the organization for this one. They haven’t been allowed contact with the players since the lockout started and they have done a good job of keeping everyone out of trouble for quite a while now.

  22. Waiting on all the comments that he had changed his life around, and that the Bears made a huge mistake dropping this clown.

  23. Whenever Cinci has an away game, the home team’s PA should play “I got stripes” by Johnny Cash.

I Got Stripes — Stripes Around My Shoulders
I Got Chains — Chains Around My Feet
I Got Stripes — Stripes Around My Shoulders
And Them Chains — Them Chains They’re About To Drag Me down

  24. Marvin Lewis entering his ninth season and on his watch, at least 20 of his players have been arrested (if you add in Pacman Jones and Marvin White).

20 players?!? And don’t think for a moment, that’s only 20 arrests – no. Some, like Benson, have 2 or 3 arrests.

Cincinnati is quickly overtaking Toledo as the armpit of Ohio. Full of douche bags and criminals.

  25. fantasy football fantasy tip – D/ST bye week replacement – whoever’s got the ‘gals…

6:45? If nothing good happens after 2:00am, when is it safe to get up?

    —————————————

I know man, it’s just like Gremlins….you can’t feed them after midnight but when the hell CAN you feel them again?

  28. “…..if the Bengals are willing to overlook it…..”

If the Bengals weren’t willing to overlook it, repeatedly, they wouldn’t be able to field a team.

In Cincinnati it’s just one turd after another. They were supposed to be on the road to a World-Without-Turds. Then they go right back and pick up Benson/Pacman/Tank Johnson. They deserve what they get.

  29. When they took his mug shot, Cedric wanted to know if he would get any royalties from it.

  30. The Bengals don’t even lead the league in arrests since 2007. Broncos, bucs, jags, dolphins and Titans all have more or the same. Stop sensationalizing the situation.

  31. Oh, come on!!!

This is actually okay because Benson didn’t use Twitter, Ustream, or ride a bull like Chad Ochocinco!!!

The media doesn’t care about arrests anymore!!!

  32. Marvin White, and Cedric Benson are UFA, or they will be when lockout ends which is jut a technicality. I know they were looking to bring Benson back, but not sure what they will do now. I would bet that there are teams with more arrest than the bengals if you go back to 2000 to now I would bet there are a few teams with more arrest. Bottom line any player getting arrested Is plain stupid, and the Bengals are a Victim of Mike Browns pocket book. They sign players with questionable character because they can be had on the cheap. Bottom line

  33. Three in a week? That’s because they have an idiot for owner/GM. He pays them so little that they have to go out and get in trouble. Got to blame it on someone, it can’t be their faults.

  34. 2-14 both coming against the browns? You should be arrested for being a tard keep it real 0-16 for the benGIRLS!

  35. You know football season must be getting close when Bengals start getting arrested.

    Can’t Wait

  36. Thank goodness they’re considering annexing cincy into Kentucky! Ohio doesn’t need this embarrassment of a city anymore!

  37. With a rookie QB and a group of young wide receivers, the only hope the Bengals had was a running game behind Benson.

  38. So this was the same idiot who said Carson Palmer wasn’t wanted back in the Bengal locker room huh? Maybe it’s Carson Palmer who’s tired of being around them. I don’t blame Carson for being tired of this clown show. Good for him for saying enough is enough.

  39. So Ced’s a free agent? Sounds like a perfect fit for the black and gold team in Pissburgh. They are a cesspool of deviants already, so why not.

  40. “Hard Knocks” is going to change it’s name to “Hard time” and I have a pretty good idea who the first team they will profile is

  41. The Bengals have always been a team for Ex-Cons, and if you havent been arrested then you will shortly after you sign there! I dont blame Carson Palmer at all for wanting to leave.

  42. And it all comes down to this:

Mike Brown is in charge of everything.
    Keeping the coach.
    Picking the players.
    Keeping the players.
Running the oganization as cheap as he can.
