Are we sure he was talking about Randy Moss. Tafur lists Moss as the #1 option if the Raiders signed a veteran WR. But Santana Moss is also a free agent and had a very good connection with Jason Campbell, when they were both in Washington. I’m not ruling out that it is Randy, for the simple fact that Davis blamed himself for not providing Randy with the help needed to succeed in Oakland. He said as much during the Cable inquisition.

No. He will likely create new problems. The Saints were only able to get something out of him because of the strong quarterback presence. He’s going to eat Cam Newton or Jimmy Clausen alive just like he did with Eli Manning. He’s injury-prone and borderline washed up. He’s not a star tight end any more but he could have contributed on another team. He and Carolina are not right for each other.

Gates missed 6 games in 2010. The point is who has been the most productive and in overall games played Gates has been more productive than Witten and Gonzalez.

Can’t be very productive from the training table, can ya? All I said was they must be going on TDs alone, and the author obviously did. There’s more to it than that and none of it shows up on any stats sheet. The qualifier is “receiving tight ends”. Blocking is part of the job description and the author of the article himself says about Gates “He won’t be appearing on the list of blockers (for good reason – it’s as bad a part of his game as receiving is good)”.

I don’t really have a problem with Gates or Gonzales over Witten, just seems overly simplistic to split the rankings between receiving TE’s and blocking TE’s, then declare only the receiving TE’s to be the “productive” TE’s. Witten’s #3 on the receiving list behind what’s basically a really big WR that can’t block (Gates) and a future Hall of Fame traditional TE (Gonzales) and #2 blocking TE behind a glorified tackle (Kleinsasser) so I’m pretty happy with that.

It’s no surprise to find Chargers TE Antonio Gates at the top of a list of the most productive tight ends over the last three years.
