No Moss for Patriots

Randy Moss AP

The Patriots dumped Randy Moss when he was actually producing, back when it was an unpopular move.

It never made a lot of sense they would bring him back now after he failed with two other teams and the Patriots did so well without him. Still, speculation persisted that perhaps Moss would return for a low low price.

Yeah, that’s not going to fly per Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.

“Just don’t ask about Randy Moss returning,” Young told her readers Monday morning. “I’ve heard on good authority that’s not going to happen.”

Perhaps the Patriots do add a value wideout.   They could use some reliable speed. At the very least, someone should be competing to take playing time from Deion Branch and/or Brandon Tate on the outside.

That competition isn’t going to come from Moss, though.  No matter what freakish shape he’s in.

Whatever team nabs Moss is going to get the steal of a lifetime. A scorn Moss is a dangerous Moss. He will tear the league a new one this year.

He is a train wreck…… The ride was fun while it lasted. Now pick up T.O. in your Thunderbird, and ride far off into the sunset!

There’s no doubt he could still be a top 5 WR, but who wants a guy that turns the motor on and off at his whim? Not the Pats, not the Vikes and not the Titans – apparently.

  4. watermelon1 says: Jul 18, 2011 10:40 AM

While I think Randy Moss can produce on the Patriots, and the Patriots can win with Moss…

it just doesn’t make sense. With the huge egos of Belichick and Brady… they don’t want someone there who begged to get out of there.

Besides, wouldn’t it make much more sense for them to get someone much more future-proof? Someone like… Sidney Rice? Even a Santonio Holmes would work for them. I wouldn’t be surprised if passes from Tom Brady is exactly what would cure Braylon Edwards of his drops. Maybe a Steve Smith from the Carolina Panthers. They could even sign Donte Stallworth, who showed he still can get past corners and catch the deep ball… even if the Ravens never used him. Terrell Owens even if he has to miss the start of the season. I think these are all more plausible options for the Patriots than Randy Moss who fought so hard to get off the Patriots.

It doesn’t matter if he is in “freakish shape” if he doesn’t come prepared to play and doesn’t truly want to work hard and put the team first. Can’t expect his natural talent to carry him anymore.

Bottom line – he is the poster boy for the “all-about-me” wideout of the early 2000′s. I can’t say I blame the Patriots, or any team, who takes a pass right now.

Why are NFL teams still handing over large bags of money to this piker? He seems to be living on the reputation garnered from his early playing days in Minnesota, where he led the Vikings to ZERO Superbowl appearances. Stops in Oakland, Minnesota (again) and Tennessee yielded little on-the-field production.

Last season Moss should have been at his competitive best, playing with Tom Brady who just a couple of seasons back threw 50 touchdown passes in a near perfect season – and a good number of them to ol’ Randy.

So what does the guy do? Instead of playing his butt off and earning a new contract, he gets all dressed up in his funny attire and stands in front of the media and whines about NEXT YEAR’s contract.

Mr. Bill wisely ships Moss off to the mentally challenged Vikings for a 3rd round pick – where he proceeds to insult the catering staff, pout and sulk on the field, tries to get the coach fired … and is ultimately released only a couple of weeks later.

This 34-year old blunderbuss has seen his better days. He needs to stop torturing NFL fans and simply fade away into the life of yet another millionaire underachiever.

  14. pencilfart says: Jul 18, 2011 10:56 AM

@Randysavage, You think Moss will come back to the Raiders and work off the 20 million he stole from the Raiders the last time he was there.

  15. rc33 says: Jul 18, 2011 10:59 AM

I’ll take the under on “tearing up the league.”
The guy’s talent level has slipped and he’s more of a decoy than anything else. Too high maintenance as well. He’ll only be happy under specific circumstances and at his age, after being with 3 teams last season, I’m not sure at all he’ll get all the attention he wants.
Bottom line is Moss blew his chance in New England. He could’ve stayed productive, finished his career there and quite possibly won a ring if he’d just kept his mouth shut. Bitching about your contract for 20 minutes after an Opening Week win isn’t gonna endear you to Belichick.
Brandon Tate is going into his 2nd season and I guess they thought it was best to go forward with him getting the reps. Makes sense.

  16. themage78 says: Jul 18, 2011 11:00 AM

Lol Belichek is going to pick him up again I bet. This was a clever ruse on his part, showing they didn’t need him, make Randy eat some crow, and then accept him back into his graces when no one else wants him.
Pats will get him for a song, and he will play his heart out again until they don’t need him anymore.
    Belichek = genius.

  17. berniemadoffsides says: Jul 18, 2011 11:04 AM

You know what’s crazy is if you look at his career stats, his YPR were actually decent for the first 6 games he actually caught balls in: over 15 YPR. It’s not as if he wasn’t productive – he was still getting yards, still getting TD’s.

He only played about 6 games where he had any real interest, then he completely gave up. He still had over 20 receptions, 5 TD’s, and over 300 yards. I’m not saying he’s going to get you 1700 yards and 20 TD’s in 2011, but he could easily get you 1000 yards and 10 TD’s w/ the right team… in my opinion, it’ll be the Jets. Rex loves Moss, they’re losing Braylon Edwards, and I personally think Moss would mesh well with that team’s mentality. Plus that team’s ready to roll – they just need some help for Sanchez, who is average as can be, in my opinion.

I just think it’s a mental thing with Randy. He needs to have a chip on his shoulder, as shieldsisland37 suggested. All I know is, if he’s falling to the 7th or 8th rounds of my fantasy drafts, I’m taking him. It’s worth a shot.

    __________________________________
GR: The only thing he was producing with the Pats last year was INTs.

Brady stopped trying to force balls once Moss got traded and the offense took off. Truth be told, as soon as Moss got to NE Brady stopped being the WB whose favorite WR was “the open one” and started trying to feed Moss all the time. It worked ok in 07 before defenses figured out how to slow it down later in that same year (check the productivity of the Pats offense later in 07…not so good most games).
Brady is Brady again…fave WR is the open one. It was fun to see him get back to his old self. That alone was worth trading Moss. And it shows that a high profile WR who is a head case usually isn’t worth it. I don’t care about the records they set though so that’s not even a consideration in “worth it”.

Moss is a slacker now. Him being in shape was not the problem. He had no desire to make things happen. I watched him on the titans with balls floating right over his head just watch them when a simple jump may have resulted in a TD. The guy is done mentally not physically.

Whoever signs him will try to make it work and fail(just like his signings last year) and Moss will be cut…

Moss will be a great player for another team until he gets upset he didn’t get a pass when he thought he should and it is on from that point forward. Within 4 to 6 weeks of the start of the season he will be traded to another team he will be a great player for, until he gets upset he didn’t get a pass when he thought he should and then it is off to another team. Learn from everyone’s experience with TO. TO has been to the Super Bowl with Philadelphia once and lost. Moss has been once with the Patriots and lost to the NY Giants. To hear these two receivers talk about themselves one would think that these great, mouthy recievers would have both hands full of Super Bowl rings but in reality, together they have NONE. That alone should show any team out there that a big, loud mouthed receiver who can’t get along with their teammates has little to do with getting to the Super Bowl and nothing to do with actually winning one.

  28. djteknision1200 says: Jul 18, 2011 11:47 AM

  29. descendency says: Jul 18, 2011 11:53 AM

There are too many young and talented WRs on this team to replace them with a veteran with 1-2 good years left who can’t play special teams.

I love Moss to death… but he just doesn’t have a roster spot on the team.

If the Patriots cut Tate or Price for him, I’d be shocked. Branch too. Welker, Edelman, and Tate play special teams.

I doubt they go after anyone. This WR core may not be great, but it has a ton of potential.

  31. Deb says: Jul 18, 2011 12:09 PM

  32. connorchew says: Jul 18, 2011 12:10 PM

i don’t believe many people can honestly say they want a player with the baggage. when he wants to play, every team in the nfl would like him. But it’s not worth trying to go out of your way to make a old diva happy anymore. sure when he was in his prime it seemed worth it. but in a side note.. moss will be a coveted free agent for the general public when madden comes out, haha

  33. randysavage4ever says: Jul 18, 2011 12:15 PM

    @pencilfart

stranger things have happened, he owes us something, no better way to make it up to us then coming back and balling out

I also dont see any other team taking a risk on Moss then the Raiders part 2…

all bias aside, Al Davis is the only GM/OWNER/HEAD COACH that would give him a 2nd chance,

I dont think Randy Moss will be signed at all if Al doesnt do him this favor…

after that RIDICULOUS PRESS CONFERENCE from the pats-vikes game, why would anyone…

ive never seen anyone lose to a team and then make love to them at a press-conference, especially to the team that traded you…

i dont blame the Vikes for cutting him the next day, i would to, loyalty

forget all the other Moss problems – LOYALTY is his biggest problem…

he dissed Belicheck, he dissed Chilly and the Vikes (and the food people, he dissed Al, he dissed Tom Brady, he dissed JEFF FISHER ON TENN RADIO USING AN ALIAS, after Fisher picked him up off waivers and gave him a chance…

why would a team sign him? It didnt work in 4 places, he disses everyone – whack. But I still love him and respect his ability, so yes I want Randy Moss even with the baggage. You cant substitute that threat on the field. The ability to strike deep in the passing game is something A LOT of teams could use…

For a brief moment, I thought that perhaps TO could be a possibility. I think he’s still got plenty left in the the tank. He may not get the ball as much as he’d like, but I figure he’d stay quiet as long as they were winning.

But then I realized, after they choke in the playoffs, he’s blow up and blast Brady for not throwing him the ball enough, and he’d create a total meltdown there in NE. That being said, Bill, please sign TO.

I had to read that sentence a few times. I actually forgot he had a cup of coffee in Minny and Tennessee.

As to the subject at hand, it’s the same ole issue for Moss: desire. If he could legitimately show desire towards the game (and his team and coaches), and match that to his physical acumen, yeah he could go for 1300/10+ TD’s. Big if, though.

Uhhh, they did draft the WR with the fastest 40 time at the combine last year in Taylor Price. He wasn’t able to practice with the team much before the season because he went to Ohio and he got buried on the depth chart. He’s the best option on the roster for ‘reliable speed’ after having a year to learn the playbook and work with Brady.

  45. gimmeabruschi says: Jul 18, 2011 2:50 PM

In 52 games he had 50 TDs, 259 catches and nearly 4000 yards for the Pats.

And he comported himself admirably with his only transgression being to say he loved playing there and wanted a contract so he could stay.

Yet somehow he is a bad guy in a Belichick world that punishes Welker for making a few harmless foot jokes.

He openly gave up, faked an injury, and added insult to injury by breaking numerous records the next season. The man is a disgrace to football.
