Report: Exclusive window could open July 25, free agency July 28

With the time line for approval of the labor agreement (once there’s finally an agreement) by the players still unclear, it’s looking like previous expectations for the launch of free agency will need to be adjusted.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported over the weekend that the three-day exclusive (eye roll) window for teams to negotiate with their impending free agents would open on Friday, July 22, with the free-agent frenzy launching on Monday, July 25.

Howard Balzer of 101espn.com and the Sports Xchange now reports that a slightly delayed schedule could be implemented.  As Balzer hears it, the three-day exclusive (eye roll) window would open on Monday, July 25.  Free agency would commence on Thursday, July 28.

Balzer also reports that teams would be permitted to sign draft picks and undrafted free agents as of July 25.

The period before Monday, July 25 would then be used by teams for the purposes of figuring out the new rules, assessing their status under the salary cap, and preparing to unload any veterans with cap numbers higher than their expected contribution justifies.

Presumably, teams will be able to dump veterans and/or renegotiate their contracts as of July 25.

Before any of that becomes relevant, we need a new labor deal.  We still don’t have one yet.

Deal will be voted on Thursday guys…

Friday is a meeting to explain the new rules to the important people of NFL front offices.

Monday = start of the new year.

It’s pretty obvious the players and the owners are a few minor steps away (or major ones that they are going to work out fast)

There’s not much that can stop this thing at this point. Amen to football being back and happy free agency, training camp, and preseason starting Monday. Although I did hear francesa say that the HOF game is going to be cancelled, any word on that PFT?

That would make an awesome birthday present.

A deal will get done by the end of this week. It makes no sense to argue over $320 million from last year and lose out on $200 million a week just during preseason alone.

I can’t wait for that free agent frenzy its gonna be crazy!!! I would have not known what I would’ve done if there was no football during Ramadan!! Islam+Football+Family= Allahu Akbar!! Life is good!

Wonder what’ll happen first – a deal on the national debt ceiling, or the freakin’ CBA?

In the end, this is all going to be insanely fun. This will be like off-season in Madden franchise mode!

Looks like the players ARE going to take a pay cut. Hell, they could have gotten a better deal 6 months ago.

No, they couldn’t have. 6 months ago the owners were only willing to talk about what they wanted the players to give up, and the players were only willing to talk about what they expected to keep. Now, both sides are actually negotiating. Owners are getting a larger share of the revenue, and players are getting other things they wanted. That’s the way negotiations are supposed to work. You get something you want, and get the other side to agree by giving them something they want.

Why can’t the WNBA be locked out instead of the Nfl?

Sydney Rice to the New England Patriots makes eminent sense—for the right price, of course. That explains precisely why it won’t happen, unless Rice is willing to take the hometown discount in consideration for an opportunity to saddle up with Tom Brady for a shot at the Super Bowl. I wouldn’t think the Pats would be willing to pay him north of $8MM/year. And then there’s last year’s hip injury to consider. Still, Rice would fill a well-defined need for a legit No. 1 WR capable of the “big play,” and help ensure that New England wouldn’t rank second in receiver drops, as in 2010.

Get on with it already! While you’re all at it stop acting like a bunch of spoiled rich kids.

For free agency to start on the 28th of July, would be the best birthday present ever.

    Let’s get it done.

How about the NFL and NFLPA start to get the deal done for themselves and not for the fans.

If these parties had ANY common sense…they would have completed this 4 months ago !!
