The UFL will only succeed if they go to the spring and become the NFL spring league in cities that don’t have NFL teams or could handle a minor league product. This way, as you mention, fans could follow their favorite college players into the developmental league, and these guys could improve, and become NFL players, or make a name in the minor league for a few years. There is too much good college and pro football available during the football season – we need football in the spring to help us get to the fall. There is definitely room for that, I watch CFL every year, and would love something that helped me get through the off season like NFL Europe used to do.

But what about Colt Brennan? According to the Cult, he was going to light up the UFL, show those pesky Redskins and Raiders their mistake, have a bidding war for his services in the NFL, and then be hoisting a Superbowl trophy!!! Oh the humanity, it just isn’t fair!!!! lol.

What sucks is that they drained players from the Arena League as those teams are in their playoff run and then they aren’t even going to play.

The Tampa Bay Storm lost their starting linebacker Cliff Dukes and best WR in Huey Whitaker to the Virginia Detroyers. They really could have used them in the game that eliminated them from the playoffs.

Why do people keep insisting on starting up other “professional” football leagues to compete with the NFL? Its never worked yet and probably never will.

Can anyone name five players from the defunct XFL? Remember that? I can only name one…Rod “He Hate Me” Smart.

This is just sad. the league had so much potential but has constantly blown opportunities to make money. no marketing. an release fee to go to the nfl. c’mon man! bring back the XFL. I miss “He Hate Me.”

You nailed it buddy. I have always wished that there was a farm team for the Raiders. No, we’re not talking NFL Europe style where there is perhaps 1 or 2 Raider prospect on the team. I want something similar to baseball’s triple AAA level. Perhaps an 8 game season for guys that would never get playing time and UFA during the offseason. If they are good enough, then invite them to camp. A small city would definitely support this and I bet many NFL fans would watch it during the dead time between the SB and training camp.

If they were smart, they would have started their league during the NFL’s offseason when us hardcore NFL fans have nothing to watch. I’d watch them these last few months. Why do they try to take on the biggest and baddest sports league in American history with second tier players is beyond me.

I would have been A LOT more interested in it. In the fall I’m paying attention to the NFL. Somebody will figure it out one of these days.

Don’t use the XFL as an example – that league was ridiculous.

A well-managed spring league with former NFL players and and younger players aspiring to play in the NFL would prosper, IMO.

Don’t try to compete with the NFL for players. Operate as a minor league of sorts, with a blend of past-their-prime NFLers and recent college players who didn’t quite make the cut for the NFL. The level of play would still be pretty decent, worth watching IMO.

Imagine how such a league would have flourished this spring, drawing in NFL fans frustrated with the lockout with pro football on TV.

I know I woulda been watching.

I think the earliest poster nailed it, they were praying on lost NFL time and players to up their talent and interest in the league. That’s not gonna happen. Their best bet would be to try and partner with the NFL and become the farm league. There’s a place for minor league football if it is placed in the right cities and is affiliated with the league. Imagine struggling rookies and undrafted free agents competing for a spot in the big leagues in small markets that love football but can’t support NFL teams. I can think of countless fans who would love to watch affordable games with some of their favorite college players whose talents don’t translate to the NFL mixed with some young guys trying to be noticed with a farm system or even a supplemental draft. I see potential, but they need to leave big markets and huge stadiums which drive overhead to outrageous levels. I can promise if your favorite team could possibly grab some players off of the UfL and they played in the spring it would be successful.
