The Manning, Brees, Mankins, Jackson backlash begins

With four of the 10 named plaintiffs who supposedly are representing all players trying to cut their own deal, possibly at the risk of blowing up the entire settlement, the other 1,896 players can’t be all that happy about this.

Now, at least one of them has gone on the record.  (Sure, he’s a punter.  But he’s still technically a player.)

Vikings punter Chris Kluwe has posted the following message on his Twitter page:  “Sigh, and once again greed is the operative byword. Congrats Brees, Manning, Mankins, and Jackson for being ‘that guy’.  #douchebags.

We love you, Chris Kluwe.  Even though you’re just a punter.

OK, do you guys pick and choose your topics? Organization would be great. Two posts that are exactly the same.

    That is just too good…

  3. omegalh says: Jul 19, 2011 2:46 PM

The franchise thing can be solved in 5 seconds. Just make it retroactive. Jackson and Mankins have been franschised before, they are exempt. Brees and Manning haven’t…wait a season. That is the fair solution.

And it counts for everyone. Not just the lawsuit guys.

  4. minormillikin says: Jul 19, 2011 2:46 PM

Well, most people aren’t smart and athletic. I guess that’s why punters are so smart.

  5. bennyblanco99 says: Jul 19, 2011 2:46 PM

Chris Kluwe needs to punt all four of them right in the NUTZ!!!

  6. mightymightylafootball says: Jul 19, 2011 2:46 PM

Kluwe is clearly a PFT commenter.

Nice to hve you on board, Chris.

  7. turbodean says: Jul 19, 2011 2:47 PM

Coincidence that he didn’t name any defensive players?

I’m waiting for the canned ‘Idiot Kicker’ response from Manning.

    That man deserves a raise.

  9. dequan81 says: Jul 19, 2011 2:48 PM

I hope this Lockout ends sooner rather than later, but a little bit of me is hoping the owners go the FU route on this one, and I would love to see the remaining 1,900+ players speak up. I’m sure they have a lot of emotion brewing for the extended lockout to begin with.

Brees is the worst of them right now in my opinion. He is so phony. We know about Vincent and Manning.

  10. grpatriot says: Jul 19, 2011 2:48 PM

Mankins isn’t the problem…Facts would help!

I love that Chris Kluwe says what everyone is thinking.

  14. zinn22 says: Jul 19, 2011 2:50 PM

It really irks me to agree with a punter but they filed the lawsuit for betterment of all players not for the betterment of themselves. Trying to use it to benefit themselves while hurting the rest of the players seems selfish and wrong.

I understand and sympathies with Mankins and Jackson wanting to leave their teams. But that does make it right what they are doing. But the worst is Manning “Mr. Perfect image.”

But maybe I am jumping to a conclusion here. It is possible that these players are being asked by the Players association to demand compensation as negotiating ploy to give all the players a little extra. If that is the case I apologize and applaud them as they are trying to do something for all players while their image takes a hit as a result. Essentially an act of self sacrifice.

  15. goldeelox says: Jul 19, 2011 2:50 PM

They just requested a clause in the new CBA prohibiting any backlash towards them.

  17. bvolke says: Jul 19, 2011 2:51 PM

Why would they be mad at Kluwe? The only reason would be because they don’t like the truth.

  18. R.H. says: Jul 19, 2011 2:51 PM

A punter. I thought punters were meant to be seen punting the ball, not talking.

    Oh vey.

  19. tntitans31 says: Jul 19, 2011 2:51 PM

  28. edjy71 says: Jul 19, 2011 2:54 PM

Manning doesn’t care what some liquered up punter thinks!

Ironic that a teams wussiest player is the one that has the most courage to speak up. I hope for his sake he’s a good punter.

  43. breeshasabush says: Jul 19, 2011 3:01 PM

When Chris Kluwe leads his team to a Superbowl and generates billions of dollars for the NFL then I guess people would have to listen to what he has to say. Seeing that he’s wearing a Vikings jersey further lets me know how much to truly care.

  44. awestcave says: Jul 19, 2011 3:01 PM

  48. laeaglefan says: Jul 19, 2011 3:02 PM

This is not a dealbreaker, guys.

  50. kom2k10 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:04 PM

I think there is more to the story that is being told. Manning has puposely held a low key position in the talks so that he doesn’t piss off fans or owners… I can’t imagine that he’d take thist stubborn stand now that it’s almost over.

Then again, if it’s true… Scr** them!

  51. vdogg says: Jul 19, 2011 3:04 PM

  55. jaggedmark says: Jul 19, 2011 3:06 PM

I expected nothing less from the greedy Peyton Manning. Hey Peyton, go find another 15 products to endorse to make up that money.

  56. 123makarov says: Jul 19, 2011 3:06 PM

Without individual plaintiffs, there is no lawsuit. Without a lawsuit, there are no negotiations. Instead, there’s the owners dictating what the revenue split will be and an 18 game season beginning in 2012.

I wonder if Chris Kluwe considered that. Probably, as a punter, he doesn’t care much since his contract will likely be vet minimum.

  57. sj39 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:06 PM

Wow, it amazes me how many of you tough guy posters here don’t get the importance of the punter. He is the guy that has to come out on fourth down to bail out your sputtering offense and try to get your defense decent field position all the while hoping not to get killed because of a missed assignment. One of the most important positions in the league.

  58. xtb3 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:06 PM

  59. bostonwest65 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:08 PM

I am not a Vikings fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I am going to order Kluwe jersey and waer it to opening day. Finally a player that tells the other spoiled kids to stop being selfish and acting like brats. Now if we could get some of the higher profile players, both past and present to do the same.

  60. shaggytoodle says: Jul 19, 2011 3:09 PM

Kluwe will either be the whiteboard illustration guy for that delivery service, or a comedian.

He’s upset cuz he can’t practice his routine on teammates on the sidelines between punts.

  62. kingjoe1 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:10 PM

  63. berniemadoffsides says: Jul 19, 2011 3:11 PM

  64. kom2k10 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:11 PM

Just curious… when there is positive news w/ the NFLPA* Lawsuit, the headline always reads Brady or Brees’s name first. When it’s negative news, why is Manning now the first name listed???

  65. bradjames33160 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:12 PM

I never thought I would say Chris Kluwe>>>>>>Peyton Manning, but there’s a first time for everything.

  66. jamie54 says: Jul 19, 2011 3:13 PM

Always thought Brees and Manning goody-goody two shoes image was a bunch of BS. Jackson and Menkins deserve something since they are the one’s who really took the chance. B and M were supposed to just be figureheads representing the everyday player and end up trying to get something on their personal agenda. Hope this illuminates to fans what these two really are, self-centered individuals just as much as any other player, no better.

  67. eustus says: Jul 19, 2011 3:14 PM

While I agree with Kluwe, he needs to remember that kickers (especially punters) are like children. They’re better seen and not heard.

  68. bravin4evr says: Jul 19, 2011 3:15 PM

I can see mankins and jackson being set free; they were tagged last year. Manning and brees should just move on. If a team doesn’t want to pay a guy let him go! Pay the guy or let them go, it’s that simple!

  73. 4gone says: Jul 19, 2011 3:22 PM

The real sad part is that they have to know that by demanding that much coin for one player, that the team cannot afford to surround them with top tier talent….and they don’t care as long as they get theirs.

  74. vadog says: Jul 19, 2011 3:23 PM

To those wondering…Kluwe is a damn fine punter! Last year he had a 43.0 yard average. He also placed 34 punts inside the 20 yard line. Not shabby.

Yet, it is his common sense leadership that is truly remarkable. If any player can be a voice for the fan, it would probably be a punter; and Kluwe is probably the best punter for the job!

All Hail the Punter…the everyday man in the NFL! All Hail Chris Kluwe!

Oh and he happens to be one of the better punters in the NFL.

Vikings now officially have had the two coolest punters of all time. Kluwe (hilarious) and Mitch Berger (hardest hitting punter I’ve ever seen, lol, and also that Snickers commercial guy).

Why is it that everyone is so quick to jump on the players backs? Even guys who make the league minimum make money I can only dream of, so I don’t feel any pity for any of them.

Guys like Peyton and Drew put butts in the seats and they deserve to get whatever they can. I’d rather see the Franchise tag go away completely. Seems whenever a team uses it they just alienate the player they’re trying to keep.

This could also just be a smoke screen to take the pressure off the negotiations and put the focus on the player’s lawsuit, which will be dismissed as soon as the CBA is signed.

Never forget that every player in the NFL puts their body and future on the line every time they line up for a play. Whatever they can get, is whatever they can get. The business side of professional sports bores the hell out of me. Just come to an agreement and start the league year, please!

It would seem to me if ONE player wants something more to settle at the cost of the rest, the PA attorneys have a conflict on their hands!
I wonder if any individual player would want to invest his own money to carry on a very expensive anti trust case against the NFL with substitute counsel?

  109. jcrileyesq says: Jul 19, 2011 4:50 PM

who would have thought the most selfish guys in the league were QBs and not WRs? Well I knew Manning was but not Mr. New Orleans

  110. pastabelly says: Jul 19, 2011 4:58 PM

I’ll weigh in on Mankins. Yeah, he thinks he got screwed. But he knew what the playing field was like when he signed his deal and when he held out. He played hardball with the Pats and lost. If he wants to hold out again, that’s up to him. His record off the field isn’t as good as it is on the field. The punter is correct. These guys want to hold out for better deals for THEMSELVES.

As far as Manning goes, the Colts offered him more than the MVP of the league Tom Brady got. What more does he want (other than Brady’s wife)? Some of these guys are pigs.

i heard OSI from the giants is doing the same thing. How come they enevr bring his name up?

    @m2karateman

I never have conversations with people who think it’s important to include personal attacks in their posts. Although I’m suspecting that Numbnuts was your personal signature.

Has it even occurred to anyone that this last minute play is an effort of the NFLPA* to grind the axe on the Franchise tag? Show me a player who likes it? I might agree with the negative assessment if this actually leads to a break down in the talks, I don’t think it will though.

  113. leftysmoke says: Jul 19, 2011 5:35 PM

If anyone is a douche bag, it’s this guy. Now it’s their fault for bringing on the lockout? If he was given the opportunity to be a plaintiff, you think he would have passed? Someone is mad that they aren’t as important as the other guys. Awwww…

I guess punters have to make the “highlight” reel somehow.

  114. patsandsox says: Jul 19, 2011 5:36 PM

One high-ranking NFLPA executive told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen: “Any media reports of a last-minute power play by players are misleading and erroneous. There are unresolved issues and we remain focused on resolving them.”

I knew it was just media bs

Kluwe needs to conserve his energy … he’s going to be more busy this season than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest.

  116. bradentonbuc says: Jul 19, 2011 5:46 PM

Peter King is stupid. To say the people of Tampa want to sign Peyton Manning is ludicrous. we have a future superstar in Josh Freeman!!! Why would we want an old QB for big bucks!!!

  117. rbirving says: Jul 19, 2011 5:52 PM

    @patsandsox
That makes the most sense. Hack “writers” trying to justify their existence by stirring up the pot.

Brady isnt holding anything up from what I have read….

I can’t believe Kluwe actually said that. Wowzers. On one hand if this whole thing is true it’s hard to blame him for being angry. On the other hand, it’s probably not a good idea to say it.

  119. weneedlinemen42 says: Jul 19, 2011 6:12 PM

I say let them have their special treatment, just so long as they also agree to accept 1 other exemption each.

If they want freedom from the franchise tag, I say the league should insist on Manning and Brees being exempted from the “roughing the passer” rule. Vincent Jackson should be excluded from the protections for a defenseless receiver. Mankins should be exempt from any protection for defensive players cut blocking him in the knees.

The league should insist on this as a concession to all the other players represented in the class action, who Manning, Brees, Jackson and Mankins are fine with being subject to franchise tag.

  120. backuppunter says: Jul 19, 2011 6:19 PM

I have mostly been on the players side on all this and think with my own limited knowledge that the compromise coming forth is a good deal for both sides. But a few big name players trying to use this for there own and only there own personal gain is disgusting. If these guys can’t operate under the rules they helped make for everyone else I really don’t need them even if they are some of the best playing right now. and i will now be a chris kluwe fan for life!

How the F__k did Brady get dragged into this discussion? He isnt holding up the negotiations, he isnt asking for special treatment. He is simply named in the lawsuit.

In the past week I have fostered a new found respect for Chris Kluwe. This is guy is hilarious!

Chris Kluwe is like that guy that sells Gremlins….
“don’t let it eat after midnight, don’t dip it in water”…

Dude is the voice of reason.

Bravo to Kluwe! None of these self absorbed POS’s are worth 5.00. They do nothing of any social significance. 14 mil out of work and they bitch about money…..

    Pitiful.

Really? Point to one post other the well deserved one in this thread where I “hate” on Brady? And yes, Brady is part of this lawsuit that is holding up the CBA along with the others, so he is not innocent in this either.

hey genius, if you knew at all what you were talking about, you’d know Kluwe’s actually one of the better punters in the NFL right now.

    And a hilarious guy.

    Nice try though

Sorry but they didnt get asked to be a part of the settlement bc of name recognition they got asked to be part of it bc they knew these guys would have the best arguement against the franchise tag and the other areas of the suit. There are alot bigger names in the NFL then Mankins and Jackson. If it was just about name recognition they would pick dozens of guys before those two.

No they used them bc of their expierence last year going against the nfl and the franchise tag. They both held out and lost significant time and money trying to fight against the tag. And Brees and Manning were added not just bc of their names but bc they were going to be franchise tagged next. Thats why these guys were added not just bc of their names but bc they were or were going to be effected the most by the existence of the franchise tag and making those situations public through a law suit was the best for them to put attention on the franchise tag so they could try to get rid of it.

That was 1 of there main goals from jump street. It isnt a coincedence that most of the plantiffs had some kind of previous or impending run in with the franchise tag. Just bc a deal is almost done and the law suit is becoming obsolete doesnt mean the union leadership wants the franchise tag to be ebolished any less. So I dont doubt that they are privately pushing the plantiffs to ask for a life long exemption from the F-tag. Just so in the future when they are argueing that having a franchise tag is wrong, they can point that moment and say “back then you agreed to give life exemptions to the certian players, you guys most have obviously knew that there was something wrong about being able to hold on the rights to a player even after his contract expires, other wise you would have never agreed to do it”

Who knows if thats exactly whats happening. But I do know theres A LOT more going on then the unions just picking these guys bc of there name recognition. and those 4 guys trying to take advantage of it so they can get something extra for themselves.

Brees is the reason we have a new CBA.
