Brees e-mail presents different timeline for week ahead

AP

The NFLPA* Executive Committee is on their way to Washington D.C. Sunday night in anticipation of Monday’s expected vote to recommed ratification of the next CBA.

Perhaps the most well known player on that committee, Drew Brees, sent his Saints teammates an e-mail Sunday, a copy of which was obtained by PFT’s Mike Florio. (NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora first reported the contents of the e-mail.)

In the e-mail, Brees makes Monday’s decision sound like a formality.

“Here is the latest,” Brees writes.  “The Deal is almost done.  I am flying out to DC tonight to meet with our Executive Committee and De Smith tomorrow.  It is expected that we will approve the deal as well as our Board of Reps and Lead Plaintiffs and then have a press conference to announce that sometime during the day on Monday.”

While he cautions that no one knows the exact schedule for the next week, his timeline differs from ESPN’s expectations for free agency.

Brees believes teams will be able to re-sign their own players starting this Tuesday.  He believes unrestricted free agency would possibly start Friday afternoon.  (ESPN said Saturday.)  Brees tells his teammates the Saints can get physicals and report to the team’s hotel on Saturday, July 30.  They will have to report to the team’s facility on Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. CT for a team meeting.

“I can’t speak for other teams, but this is what we are doing,” Brees says in the e-mail.

At a time when the NFLPA* is reportedly still working late into the night, we’re hesitant to say any timeline is certain until we see DeMaurice Smith at a podium.  (Perhaps Roger Goodell will be there, too.)

It still sounds like our remaining questions will be answered soon enough.

  1. I hope that is not another power play on behalf of the players, owners, or media! I am getting sick of this already!

  2. After all the fuss from the players about the agreement the owners rolled out, they’re now ready to approve it without changing anything?

What was all the crying about then? Why didn’t they just vote one Friday? Way to waste three days.

  3. I get how Drew knows the timeframe as outlined in the CBA as far as free agency.

The interesting point was when he said when the Saints players had to be there and saying “I can’t speak for other teams are doing, but that’s what WE’RE doing”.

Seems like Drew has been in contact with the team about things other than the CBA, which is still not allowed.

For all you Pats haters (and I’m one), I’m guessing every one of our teams has been breaking the rules with regards to contact with their own players. Now the season of contacting soon-to-be free agents begins (hahaha ! Like THAT hasn’t started already).

I just can’t believe any one of these jokers anymore. They’ve really lost the luster and I’m honestly not sure they’ll ever get it back.

  4. I was going crazy if this didn’t end soon. I too thought the first day of FA contact that was supposed to be last Sat would move the three delayed days to Tues. From the owners announcement, it would start the day after the players vote to agree, not when they form the union.

  5. If it helps you thumbs down voters, its for me not Drew. This rollercoaster’s is almost over one way or another. And check ebay for a sense of humor

  6. This is good news, this along with Steve Hutchinson, who is a player rep, saying earlier that he expects good news tomorrow. It is actually making me optimistic but I don’t want to go there yet. Fans have been let down way too many times. Let’s REALLY get it done this time guys!!

  7. how can they schedule it if they can’t speak to their coaches, or anybody in the organization?

  8. @lutazanderman have you read any of the reports of what has gone on this weekend? From the sounds of it they got what they wanted, which was to reconstitute the union on their own terms. If they had approved the NFL’s offer it likely would have been in violation of federal labor laws because management can not dictate terms about the formation of a union. Then all it would have taken was for one player to sue to have the entire deal made null and void.

  9. How does he know “how the Saints are doing it”? Aren’t the Saints prohibited from speaking to him?

Aside from that…Do you think tampering season is in full swing yet? If you’re a team like the Rams with holes to fill and hoping to continue the progress from last season…it better be.

  10. Monday I want to hear that it’s done! Then the updates can be about…

    Asomugha to sign with ???
    Burris signs with ???
Vince Young released by Titans, being signed by ??
    Deangelo Williams
    Ronnie Brown
    Randy Moss
    Marion Barber
    Vonta Leach
    Ahmad Bradshaw
Santonio Holmes -Braylon Edwards – etc….

Along with the unavoidable, who got arrested for drunk driving or a domestic dispute.

Since when does Brees organize the teams schedule? He’s obviously been talking to some from the Saints. They are not supposed to have any contact. I call foul.

  12. The last few days has simply been PR from the players as if they are thoroughly analyzing the owners proposal, so it appears they’ve been thorough and explored every detail , to appear smarter than they are and make the last months as a trade association seem worth it.
Plus it allows those players Ray Lewis alluded to, one last weekend to get it all out of the system; DUI’s, fathering children with passed out women and other assorted rubbish.

Bring on the roulette of free agency!

  13. Each team may approach this a little differently based on individual factors — but the overall message is pretty clear.

  14. Heath Evans just called ESPN, NFL Network,CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, ABC, and LIFETIME and said Brees is lying. He said real fans would see through this and know the owners are just playing more games with the players to get their hopes up.

He said the season could actually be lost and that they arent close to a deal, but he could not provide any sources or cite evidence to back up his claims.

He also said he is a hall of famer but could not provide anything to back up that claim either.

    BOO YA!

  15. Was Brees quoted anywhere saying he talked to team officials? If you don’t think Drew speaks for his teammates, then you don’t know Drew or his teammates.

  16. Either timeline is fine by me. Just as long as come the weekend there’s a definite feel that the season is about to start. At this point I’m foaming at the mouth for some football.

    =========================

What are you talking about? How do you know there were no changes?

The two sides met all day yesterday. Were you in the room?

Just because there wasn’t a PFT announcement about it, it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

  18. Brees believes
    He believes

I believe he should let the people paid to do the talking earn their pay. I believe we’ve heard entirely too much from Brees.

  19. I dont care. It done matter. Anything Drew Brees, Payton Manning, Tom Bradt, Vincent Jackson, and co say from now on is irrelevant. They should be bood whenmever they walk on the field and you definately better not buy their Jerseys. They are dead to me. Imagine the arrogance they must feel to be “the ones” to put their names on the lawsuit.
MY MOST HATED PLAYERS OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Great news!!! This whole process has been like a nasty breakup but there is light at the end of this long dark tunnel. I’m confident that this will go as planed on Monday and this drama will be over with for the next 10 years!!! Let the Free Agency bonanza begin!!!

  21. Riddell stock will fall 83% tomorrow when investors learn that all NFL players are no longer going to wear helmets in lieu of tinfoil hats.

    Oh, that’s the fans. Nevermind.

  22. Note to all involved (owners, players, reps, and agents). *ahem* Shut up. Don’t send another email, don’t hold another press conference, don’t talk to another reporter off the record, don’t even whisper what you think is going on to your wife. You can blab all you want when its DONE. Its not done. Everyone involved in this has been very adapt at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory so trying to tell us “Good news tomorrow” or “I’m so confident its done here’s our schedule for the week”? That’s not going to make us happy. Want to make us happy? When the last player rep gets to the hotel, wake everyone up and vote the damn thing in. Until then? Shut up.
