Roethlisberger wedding draws big names, special treatment

Dan Rooney AP

A year after Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was nearly run out of Pittsburgh, he got married there.

The wedding included plenty of big names, along with more than a little help from the police.  According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, guests included Steelers President Emeritus and U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney (pictured), Penguins owner Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, and of course pro wrestler Triple H.

Somewhat more interesting was the wedding party.  In addition to the presence of several teammates (including Willie “Sausage Party” Colon, Brett Keisel, Trai Essex, Ramon Foster, Chris Kemoeatu, Doug Legursky, Maurkice Pouncey, and Max Starks), ESPN analyst Merril Hoge and one of Roethlisberger’s notorious Milledgeville bodyguards, Ed Joyner, served as ushers.

Hoge’s role in the wedding comes barely two years after ESPN sustained significant criticism for ignoring a sexual assault lawsuit filed against Roethlisberger in Nevada, based possibly on a too-close-for-comfort relationship with the quarterback.  And Hoge took a break from the bash to sound off on reports of looming labor peace, committing along the way a mild case of ESPN-on-ESPN crime.

NFL is on!” Hoge tweeted.  “However I’m at Ben Rothlisberger wedding right now and players that should have voted just heard the news!!”

But Hoge didn’t have his facts straight.  ESPN’s Chris Mortensen didn’t report that a vote had been taken by the NFLPA* Executive Committee of board of player representatives; instead, Mort said only that a vote is expected Monday.

In Ohio Township, Pennsylvania, police reportedly blocked access to the church at which the wedding was held “for hours before the ceremony.”  Also, Pittsburgh police joined a private security firm to control access to the downtown location of the reception, shutting down 10th Street between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Penn Avenue.  That came after the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department swept the site of the reception with bomb-sniffing dogs.

It’d be interesting to know, at a time when local budgets are increasingly strapped, whether Roethlisberger reimbursed the police departments for the expenses incurred.  (The chances of the Pittsburgh media sending FOIA requests to get to the bottom of this are roughly equivalent to the chances of PFT doing it, but for entirely different reasons.  The local media has, by all appearances, reattached its lips to the rear end of Roethlisberger after last year’s ugliness.  We’re just lazy.)

And, yes, linebacker James Harrison reportedly attended the service.  Man, we hope he gave a toast.

So where’d he meet her? Did he say “Come here often?” or “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” or “This won’t take but a minute?” How far along is she?

“I mean it’s my favorite sport and I love to play. Especially when the defense gives a 110 percent. Because if you come through and win, it makes it feel so much better.” – ben rothlisberger on rape

Funny how we forgive dog killers, gun totters, wife beaters, yet no one gives Ben a chance just being accused. May this guys life turn towards the better. WE all need anpother chance. Hell we even forgave a Pres and his White House romance.

Merril Hoge is such a biased suck up,,,he has an excuse for everything negative Steelers, he’s a joke as an “analyst”

  12. tomsd1 says: Jul 24, 2011 8:34 AM

Of course Big Ben got special treatment. He is a two time SB QB – and you need a very good QB to win the SB – unlike having to replace a neanderthal mouth such as LB James Harrison. :)

i think all the Ben bashers got more issues than he has himself…at least he got help and is making his life better..guess that don’t say much about you guys.pathetic children that don’t know any better..

for one as it has been said by many already he wasnt accused of rape it was sexual assault which he was not charged in the first place..second there are a lot more people in the world that need bashing more than Ben.all i got to say is grow some balls and grow up already.im sure if he was on your team u would not be saying anything about him

    just sayin

LOL…just seriously laugh out loud at all the predictably lame BR and Steeler haters. I’m a Redskin fan and find you guys to be predictably hysterical in your bleating about BR. This just in…the stupid girl had a “DTF” nametag on and was going around the bar that night telling anyone who would ask that it stood for “Down to F**K”. That’s undisputed and established as FACT…yep she was an “innocent victim” alright. Ben got the scumbag tag for making it with a chick in a public bathroom but rape…sorry you need some actual evidence of that before it’s going to stick enough to even bring charges, let alone a conviction.

Oh and like it or not there is more than a little bit of evidence supporting the notion that BR has turned his life around to a significant degree and he SHOULD get credit for that. It takes a lot to face your own flaws and then actually try to change especially when it involves maturing in the process.

    Obsess much you tools?

The lockout can’t possibly end soon enough.

Hey – being an old Oakland Raider Fan (had a friend who played for them and met some of the lads – TE Bob Moore, LB Phil Villapiano, LB – Ted “The Mad Stork” Hendricks, OG George Buehler, CB George Atkinsson, etc – I HATE THE STEELERS AND THE IMMACULATE RECEPTION – but do greatly admire the Steeler “family” and their very loyal fan base.

  18. pftstory says: Jul 24, 2011 9:31 AM

Yes…who is this girl? Comfortable marrying this guy with his history this close to his last event? Or simply willing to bet life with him wont be too bad or loo long before he screws up and gets she gets a grand divorce settlement?

  19. skoobyfl says: Jul 24, 2011 9:40 AM

Special treatment = They removed all the walls inside the bathrooms at the reception hall.

  20. donterrelli says: Jul 24, 2011 9:44 AM

The obvious Ben haters are just mad because he was suspended for the beginning of the season and STILL made it to the SB.

It’s one thing to be charged and arrested for sexual assault or rape, but remember, he was never charged with anything.

    DTF much?

  21. ytsejamer1 says: Jul 24, 2011 10:09 AM

    Several thoughts here;

“one of Roethlisberger’s notorious Milledgeville bodyguards, Ed Joyner, served as ushers.”

One can safely assume then that all the women attending held their bladders for the duration of the reception?

“In Ohio Township, Pennsylvania, police reportedly blocked access to the church at which the wedding was held “for hours before the ceremony.” Also, Pittsburgh police joined a private security firm to control access to the downtown location of the reception, shutting down 10th Street between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Penn Avenue. That came after the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department swept the site of the reception with bomb-sniffing dogs.”

    Seriously??? Bomb-sniffing dogs????

Who paid for all this “security” using public police services, and did they really need to go to the length of blocking off complete streets? Who is this guy, Barrack Obama???

    Last question:
Any truth to the rumor that “Deb” was the “Best Man”?

    Just askin’

  25. steelernation1 says: Jul 24, 2011 10:38 AM

    @donterrelli

most of the people in here are uneducated, there really isnt a point in saying anything.cause they just dont get it.they fail to understand the difference between sexual assault and rape.which rape wasnt what he was accused of in the first place.nor even charged with anything.but there are athletes in the NFL that have been charged and no one says anything about them..

so what does that tell us?Steeler haters, they hate the fact that the Steeler ownership know how to win in a league where the free agency makes it tough for teams to continue to win year after year..

Irony is to see you bash other teams QB’s when you have a serial animal torturer & killer as your sn, add to it his absolute total disregard for women that he would knowingly infect them with a disease they will carry for life. Knowing your boys past, knowing the sickening plea deal he was given by a prosecutor that was a family friend, all of us would certainly trust a pathological liar. ex-con sociopath over someone that never been charged or arrested for any crimes.

That’s almost the equivalent of saying “I know he sexually assaulted that kid, but he’s having his buddies donate to charity. He’s done a complete 180.” I mean really. Rape, sexual assault, or whatever you want to call it is one of the sickest most depraved things you can do to another human being. It carries a life time of healing. Some never get over it. So to all the BR c**k suckers that think these girls had it coming, you really should check yourself and think how you would feel if it was your daughter, sister, etc. Oh and I’m sure his multi-million dollar salary had nothing to do with him “turning his life around.” Get real.

ben was never charged with anything.yet you punks run your mouth.seriously though why is it anyone only makes comments when it comes to the Steelers?oh wait i keep forgetting they know how to win!!!unlike ravens bengals browns ect…teams that either choke or just plain suck..and 2 of those 3 teams have players that are actual criminals…

I see the point you are trying to make. However, like it or not, millionaire professional athletes and their billionare friends are hardly “regular citizens”. Also keep in mind, the most powerful people in Pittsburgh were all assembled in one place. Not to mention the friggin’ US Ambassador to Ireland.

Regarding serial rapist debate, the alleged victim in Milledgeville may be just the tip of the iceberg. I heard that there were two earlier alleged victims who contacted her attorney to applaud the courage of his client, courage they did not have themselves.

Probably true. That said I hope the complaining party you responded to isn’t one who does the same thing to other teams and just hates when it’s their team.

Yes he knew the girl since 05 but it does sound a little like a marriage of convenience when they never dated seriously (from the little I saw on the topic)until after his accusations happened. Maybe it’s a coincidence, maybe not. Time will tell.

I don’t see why MF is being criticized for “bias” for wanting to know how people paid by taxpayer dollars are compensated when they are used for a private function though. Especially when that has already been a question with BR and that one crooked cop he employed.

    **********************

Really? Why? If you’d bothered to study the evidence in the case–or even just to listen to the lengthy press conference by the prosecutor in Georgia, you’d know the evidence showed the woman’s claim was falsified. The woman alleged vaginal rape, and the medical exam showed she hadn’t had intercourse during that time frame. No rape occurred. Multiple witnesses refuted her pal’s story about a bodyguard at the door–heck, she refuted it in her own written statement. The woman in Nevada who popped up a year after a one-night stand asking for $3 million in a lawsuit had sent text messages saying she couldn’t wait to see him again. Hell hath no fury like a woman who doesn’t get a callback.

I think the guy behaved like a randy dog, but there’s not one shred of evidence that he raped anyone and stacks of evidence that he didn’t. That’s why he’s never even been arrested and police in both jurisdictions have said those cases will not be revisited. As a rape victim myself, I’m tired of you clowns pretending those women are anything other than gold diggers or attention-seekers. If you don’t like the Steelers, too bad. You’ll just have to hope your team can figure out how to beat them on the field because the QB ain’t going to jail no matter how much you whine on the blogs. Poor babies.

If you have ever had to listen to some of the smarmy things she says including saying that all mothers should nurse and IT SHOULD BE THE LAW and expectant mothers (BUT NOT HER!!) use their pregnancies to become garbage disposals you would puke too. She also shows little respect for his career choice…seems to think it’s silly. Coming from a woman who makes most of her money taking her clothes off (That requires SOOO much talent and intellect doncha know?), that’s a laugh riot IMO. Didn’t say anything negative about Tom, but mentioned it was hard when Giselle was telling the press she felt like Bridget’s son was hers. Yeah, that wouldn’t thrill me, either.

Don’t know anything about Ben’s wife. Was just happy to learn he’d known her several years as opposed to five minutes. Maybe she’ll help him grow up :)
