Derrick Mason gets the axe too

We should probably wait ten minutes to write this post, because the Ravens may cut another big name before we’re done.

After dropping Kelly Gregg, Willis McGahee, and Todd Heap, word has leaked out that the Ravens have also cut Derrick Mason per Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.

This is the most surprising cut yet. The Ravens are clearly dead set on getting younger, faster, and cheaper. Mason gained over 800 yards last year, but he was well paid for a 37-year-old player. We wonder if he’ll consider retirement after flirting with it last year.

Baltimore suddenly has a big hole at wide receiver with T.J. Houshmandzadeh unlikely to be back. They have Anquan Boldin, rookie Torrey Smith, and a veteran to be named later. Carolina’s Steve Smith would make an intriguing target.
