If it wasn’t about the money how come they offered him a 3 year contract extension last season? Only after he refused to be lowballed did the tag him and then draft a cheaper replacement. It was only time for the eagles to move on after they couldn’t sign Akers at their discounted rate.

This has to do with the Eagles planning on their being no “Transition Tag” as opposed to their faith in Mr. Akers. Very smart on their part to hedge their bets and not put all their eggs into one basket.

Nothing more, nothing less. I do find it amusing that Mr. mds is trying to take credit on behalf of the site, though. To think that you “predicted” this is like saying “I told you the sun was going to shine again” after a huge rain storm came through town….

The Akers put the transition tag on Akers in February but then selected kicker Alex Henery in the fourth round of the NFL draft, making it clear that Akers wasn’t in their long-term plans.

The Eagles will regret this move. Going with a rookie kicker is usually a big gamble. I’m sure Akers will be successful where ever he goes. Class act.

Akers will be sorely missed. Just because Henery was great in college doesn’t mean he’ll perform at the same level in the NFL. Here’s hoping for the best.

When your kicker who is normally great starts costing you games in the playoffs like Arizona a few years ago and the Packers this year, it’s time to explore other options.

I love David Akers but the Eagles are in a new era. He’s one of the last pieces of one of the best periods in Eagles history, but it’s clear that the Eagles aren’t going to dwell on the past as they move ahead. I wish Akers luck with his career and his daughter’s health, and hope he doesn’t sign with an NFC East team haha. He will be remembered as an all-time Eagles great kicker and I hope Henery can accomplish even half of what Akers did

Its popular to bash Akers based on the playoff game, but in reality he had one of his best seasons last year(and was all pro). Some teams kicking game will instantly improve by signing him. The eagles are letting him go over money and for no other reason.

He’s a good kicker, probably has some tread on the tires too. He will do well somewhere else, but it is time for the Eagles to move on.

I thank him for his efforts for the team and I’m sorry, about his sick child, but he did blow a playoff game. Th NFL is the ultimate perform based job and he didn’t perform when the team needed it most. Good Luck

Dude missed too many important (and not that long) kicks recently. Henery is one of the most accurate kickers I’ve ever seen. The only reason I know is because I live with Nebraska fans.

Everybody saw this coming as soon as they drafted Henery. He’s a good guy, I hope he has success elsewhere (unless he stays in the NFC East.)
