Even tho he is slower & was done about 2 yrs ago, Mason will be missed, as will Heap (unless they come back for pennies). As far as them looking at Santonio or Steve Smith, they still have Joe Flaccid throwing the ball. Would luv to see crybaby Holmes yelling at Joey-boy because he wasn't seeing the ball enough!!

I have to show some respect for Kelly Gregg. Dude was one of the most overlooked under-appreciated players in the NFL for a long period of time. the combination of very unflashy position that doesnt put up sexy stats with a very unassuming personality and low-key style combined with playing on a defense led by huge name stars with bigger than life personalities like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed all factored into Gregg consistently being overlooked.

for 7 seasons (2002-2009) Gregg was the starting nose tackle in the Ravens 34 base defensive front. Its a grueling position where he was routinely asked to take on double teams, eat up space and basically do all the hard work so playmakers like Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs could shine and get all the credit. Gregg did it with a blue collar work ethic and only missed 5 games in those 7 years----never more than 2 in a season.

The fact that Kelly Gregg never made a pro bowl or 1st or 2nd team All Pro list is just as absurd as Jon Runyan's pro bowl snubs and London Fletcher's 0 pro bowls until people wised up in 2009 and gave him two in a row. The fact that Gregg was a former 6th round pick and n0-name player didnt help his cause in the farce known as the pro bowl either.

It is not surprising at all that Gregg got cut however, he will be 35 in 2011 and the years of abuse and constant intense battle with 300+ offensive lineman as well as age caught up to Gregg and he seemed to just be completely out of gas in 2010. He started all 16 games but he was a shadow of his former self, making much less of a impact, being easier to move off his ground, struggling against doubles and just clearly deteoriating as a player.

Hopefully Gregg doesnt push his luck and pursue oppurtunities with other teams. It was clear to me in 2010 that his career was winding down quickly, and 124 games of constant head trauma going toe-toe against the most physically dominating interior offensive lineman in the sport can do serious damage. time to hand em up Kelly------but you deserve all the respect you get, and then some bro!

Derrick Mason? They cut DERRICK MASON? He’s been so consistent on that team that if they don’t bring him back (and he doesn’t retire), then look for him to show up somewhere else, EASILY.

I wonder who they are looking at getting across from Boldin? Malcom Floyd? Sims-Walker?

Also, what TEs are out there to replace Heap? Shockey?

---------------------

Ed Dickson has potential to be a beast. Like mentioned in this article, he will certainly become a big part of their offense.

As for "rebuilding" like some have commented, more like re-touching the final pieces for a Super Bowl worthy team. The Ravens are always on the brink, but never seem to get over the hill. They either bumped by the Colts or Steelers. These pieces won't get them past blowing games, but they are definitely going to be monster-like if Dickson proves worthy. Especially if they pick up another big name WR.

It has begun!

Ozzie knows what he's doing. It's not like anybody that got cut is gonna be replaced by a rookieand its not like any of them were in their prime. With these 4 cuts the Ravens freed up almost 20 mil in payroll. How bout some of you guys wait to see what free agents ozzie brings in before you go jumping ship.

@tdk24 - stfu

for all the Ravens fans out there.... be patient. Ozzie is a top five GM and has a plan. we don't know what the plan is, but be assured, he has a plan. while the rest of the league is dithering about the CBA, Ozzie and the front office were ready from jump street.

I expect Heap to come back for a more friendly contract. Mase will retire rather than taking less money. Gregg stays for less money or becomes a Jet and quietly ends his career.

the only real surprise here is Todd Heap. Yes they just drafted Dixon and Pitta, but Heap to me was still a surprise. In any case... the mantra is "In Ozzie we Trust." Few teams can say that with more confidence in their GM than can the Ravens.

finally, at tdk24 again; - i realize that you have a sad worthless life given that your reason for existence is owed to a broken condom, but you really need to seek help. The Ray thing has been over for more than a decade. You'd be more up to date if you spoke about Ben raping someone, Hines Ward driving drunk etc....

McGahee, Heap, Mason and Gregg are nothing to scoff at. Put your stock in a bunch of rookies, and the mistakes will come back and bite you. Hope they know what they’re doing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont disagree with the logic but they arent just simply turning starting roles over to a bunch of rookies. At NT obviously Haloti Ngata could slide in their and probably be the best in the NFL, plus they have 2nd year pro Terrance Cody, 27 year old Brandon McKinney and 26 year old Kelly Talavou who are all big bodied, 340+ pound natural nose tackle for a 34 front.

Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta are both 2nd year pros, both big time high potential players with prolific college careers at bigtime schools and both now have a year in the Ravens offensive scheme and in the league.

At HB McGahee isnt much of a lose, he is a declinging aging veteran at a position that is one of the easier to fill (backup HB). Ray Rice is obviously the proven starter and a "in his prime" pro bowl runner. if the Ravens can resign Leron McClain he can easily step up and fill McGahees shoes

Its a young man's game and these guys were NOT the right player/right price in Ozzie's eyes.
Plus Heap has gotten real brittle...Gregg has had micro fracture knee surgery, and Mason is purely a sideline/curl pattern receiver who can't get deep.
I'm convinced that Ozzie has been given the word from Bisciotti to get the players we need to put us over the hump to beat the Steelers and get rid of the guys that just kept us where we were last year...that's not good enough.

Derrick Mason? They cut DERRICK MASON? He's been so consistent on that team that if they don't bring him back (and he doesn't retire), then look for him to show up somewhere else, EASILY.

I wonder who they are looking at getting across from Boldin? Malcom Floyd? Sims-Walker?

Also, what TEs are out there to replace Heap? Shockey?
