These teams with tons of cap room blowing tons of cash on players that don’t deserve it are really going to make life hard for teams up against the cap.

$76M for 1 good year, what a friggin joke. To put that in perspective, Dwight Freeney signed a 6/$72M deal starting in 08, the biggest defensive player contract in NFL history at the time. He had 6 years and 60 sacks under his belt. Compared to Johnson’s 4 years with 21.5 sacks, that is beyond insane.

Remember Richardson’s comments about “taking back our game”? What happened to that Jerry?

I am an all around football fan who knows a majority of the players, especially the ones that should make that much. Who the $#_%% is Charles Johnson, DE, of the Panthers? No one outside of the Panthers, or NFC South knows.

First jerry gets blasted for gutting the roster to save money. Now he’s getting blasted for opening up his check book? I don’t this is a bad deal. Especially when you look at his production compared the no. of snaps he played his 1st 3 seasons.

This was a bold move and a huge payday, but as a panthers fan, I’m happy. Let’s get Cam Newton to work, resign Williams and James Anderson…add a veteran WR and QB and show people we sucked because of crappy coaching and inexperiance at QB.

Lets look at this guys.

This is likely a 4 year 42-48 million dollar deal.

First, this means we only pay him probably 17 million after this year. He has a reasonable cap hit.

Additionally 11 to 12 million for a pass rushing DE is about the going rate, they are a dime a dozen around the NFL now.

Also Charles has developed and had competing offers that the Panthers had to do their best to match or beat.

Yes, its a big payday, and yes the Panthers probably overpaid by 2-3 million a year, but they had to do that in order to retain him, and losing him was not really an option cause there wasnt a replacement out there.

If his work ethic remains on a high level, this is a fine deal. I hope the gentleman stays healthy, becomes a locally-revered personality on the level of a Mint or a Ruck, and helps this Panthers D become a massive force in the league, as they should be.

you guys do realize that he only played APPEARED in 3 games as rookie and in 2 full seasons opposite of Peppers he put up nearly identical numbers and in his first year as the #1 threat he exploded and doubled his production?? Maybe he should’ve got about 5MIL less but seriously when your trying to keep your defense strong so your bad offense can try and get better by adding a few good WRs you can’t go wrong by slightly over paying your best bet on that side of the field. Hell I’ll be pissed if my 9ers over pay Goldson but it’s better then having Curtis Taylor or Reggie Smith opposite Taylor Mays…..The same can be said of the Panthers DE situation. I have absolutely no idea who any of their other DEs are and would not be comfortable with Johnson gone.

Everyone needs to realize he wasn’t the premiere starter until last year. Even with that he still rotated with other players playing maybe 75% of the time, mostly on third downs to get pressure. He panned out better than Peppers did in Chicago.

The Panthers rolled the dice that they’d be able to restrict Johnson in free agency, and when that didn’t happen they had to cough up the megabucks. If they hadn’t, Carolina GM Marty Hurney would have risked losing face, particularly if Johnson had bolted to a division rival like Atlanta.

I’d take Edwards in a heartbeat over Johnson. The consistent production, and sheer physical size of Edwards make me feel that way.

I’m not saying that Johnson doesn’t have potential, but for that kind of money I’d want more than potential, or 1 year of production.

IMO, neither player is worth this contract.

I predict this hyped week of chaos is gonna be a dud.

FA hasn’t been intriguing for years.

First…I think a ton of guys are gonna end staying right where they’ve been.

The few who do move will go someplace typical like NA to the Jets. Yawn.

The Packers and Steelers who could mix it up by making a bold move will probably stay out.

I think the excitement will come from street guys who go someplace you wouldn’t expect. Randy Moss to the Bears (example not a prediction) .
