"Is 24 really necessary? Have the Jags won a SB yet? smh"

STFU....It amazes me how little some Steeler fans know about football and the NFL. Yes, the Steelers are a great franchise with a lot of history and tradition. Jumping on a news thread about another team signing undrafted rookies doesn't make you cool or smart...just makes you look like a know-nothing a$$hole bangwagon Steeler troll....and you bring down the good Steeler fans with you.

One of them is bound to stick, more specifically a couple of the linebackers (for depth), Schiechl (replacing Harvey), and Binns (Who will probably replace Tiquan Underwood, bringing size to the receiving corps).

Binns was very productive in college but may not have the best hands. DE Marc Schiechl is an intriguing prospect after setting Div II sack records and having outstanding measurables at his pro day workout. Gordon, Rutland and Newsome also have a shot at making the roster at positions of need with proven talent on the college level. Some of these other guys like Estrada have a chance with the special teams. Maybe a lineman or two could end up on the practice squad as a developmental project. Gene Smith goes the extra mile to evaluate some of these smaller school guys, so you never know if he might find some diamonds in the rough.

Jags only took 5 players in the draft, so it makes sense for them to bring in a lot of UDFA. Binns, Scott Lutrus, Kevin Rutland, and Eric Gordon were considered draft worthy prospects on most boards, so they fill in for the picks used to trade up for Gabbert and Will Rackley.

Simple explanation. Training camps require LOTS of bodies, not because all these guys have a prayer of making the team, but simply to facilitate multiple practice groups.

With 90 guys in camp, and setting aside kickers, long snappers and various special teams people, you could still run three simultaneous 11-on-11 scrimmages, giving your position players precious reps. Your offensive line might not go three deep, for example, but if you have even one guy more than two deep, this way even he gets reps.

And if some complete unknown suddenly starts looking like the second coming of Larry Fitzgerald, you saw him first.

Remember the regular season doesn't start til September, and while rosters will be pared along the way, it's likely you could get as much as two or three weeks out of some of these guys as rep mules, with a chance one or two of them prove to be worth keeping.

Think of them as "temps".
