Ravens agree to terms with Marshall Yanda

Ravens Ray Rice celebrates his touchdown against the Bengals in Baltimore Reuters

The Ravens let go of a lot of big names on Monday in part so they could spend big money to keep one of their up and coming players.

G.M. Ozzie Newsome confirmed Tuesday evening that the team agreed to terms with guard/tackle Marshall Yanda. We previously heard that the Ravens believed bringing back Yanda was the key to their running game this year.

“We got Marshall Yanda! That’s great news,” coach John Harbaugh said. “He told us he wanted to be a Raven and he understood the business part that he had to go through. I’m beaming, you see Ozzie smile and is there anyone more excited than [offensive line coach] Andy Moeller right now? We’re a better team than we were one hour ago.”

Yanda is likely to move back to guard, but he can play right tackle when asked.

There was a report that the Redskins were interested in Yanda, which surely drove up his pricetag.  He may wind up getting more money than any guard in free agency this year, including Robert Gallery and Davin Joseph.

UPDATE: Mixmaster Schefter has the numbers: $32 million over five years with a $10 million bonus.  He’ll make $21 million in the first three years. That’s basically the McContract for solid free agent guards.

    Dammit Jim. Would have really liked to see him in the burgundy and gold.

    Bummer. Wanted him on the Cardinals.

    Yanda was much desired and he loved being a Raven and a perrenial super bowl contender. Question is, did he give a hometown discount and if so enough to lock up another one or two big free agent names or a big name and enough money to resign Heap and/or Mason.

    But do they have 6 rings? NO!! lol

  5. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 26, 2011 6:38 PM

    Yanda is average at best. They could have used that money somewhere else.

  6. dcbassguy says: Jul 26, 2011 6:40 PM

    Smart move. Even with all the toys for Flacco and the passing game, this team revolves around the run.

    Why isn’t he Yanda the Panda? C’mon people… imagination.

    Nope…..
    but he has not molested women – Rothlesberger
    or has he been arrested for DWI – Ward
    or threw any of his team mates under the bus – Harrison….

    The squealers have a lot more to think about these past off seasons than their rings

    @eaglesfootballfan

    Anyone who has either watched him play or had to watch your team play against Yanda knows he is far from average. Average at best would be better used to describe your teams playoff performances for the last decade.

    5 years 32 million. He probably could have gotten more from the Redskins. Definitely a home town discount given.

    @steelerfansareretards

    OK, so if the Eagles are average in the playoffs for the last decade, what have the ravens been?

    I’m not a betting man, but the Eagles have more playoff wins in the last 10 years than the Ravens do.

    ravenfan820 .. You have alot of nerve throwing stones the Steelers way …. Sure Roethlisberger got the stinky pinky . Yes Ward was dumb . Ray Lewis throw his team under the bus after the Steelers loss in the playoffs .

    None of those players contributed to the death of 3 people …..

    Lewis … Cough 2 dead in Atlanta , throw my boys under the bus cause they arent in the NFL cough …..

    Stallworth COUGH …. Drinking and driving and killing a pedestrian , did time in jail .. COUGH ….

    Yanda is much better than an average interior lineman in the NFL. He is one of the strongest players on the team only second to Ngata. The guy can play any position on the OL including center if need be. His best position is RG but the Ravens put a premium on guys that can fill in at more than one position.

    To the Redskins fan who wanted him – too bad. Develop your own talent. Yanda decided that he would rather make 7 million a year and be with a winning organization than 8 million a year to play for the Danny and be relegated to the bottom of the NFC east.

    @steel6times – we know the steelers SB record. thank you. btw – did ben rape anyone during his wedding? did Hines drive home?

    @eaglesfootballfan – love my Iggles as my NFC east team. But you couldn’t have watched Yanda play based on what you said. The guy is a very very good football player. As far as using the money elsewhere, you may be right, however, you have to make decisions about how your are going to divide up your cap money. Our offensive line is a major area of need. We could not afford to lose Yanda at his age, with his talent because there was no one out there close to his ability ready to replace him. I’d take him over Robert Gallery in a heart beat.

    @dcbassguy

    Who said anything about me being a Ravens fan? I’m not even a fan of an AFC North team.

    I will admit the screename does give off a false impression.

    At any rate, I’m sure you are right. But, the Ravens are winning in the only category that matters…1 Superbowl (maybe it’s a decade + 1 season ago?)

    Dcbassguy, you’re right the Eagles do have more playoff wins over the last decade, by 1 game. The Ravens are 9-6 in the playoffs in their history. The Eaagles since the last week of 2000 (when the Ravens got their first playoff win in their first playoff game) are 10-9. In other words, I’ll take the better winning percentage and the ring your franchise is still looking for.

    Steeler fans, the reason Ravens fans “throw stones” your way on here is because YOU come into stories that utter not a single word that could be discerned as black or gold and say “boo hoo 6 rings” Obviously you’re free do do whateverr you want here but YOU’VE got a lot of nerve yourselfs coming onto a RAVEN article to spew Steeler propaganda. I swear, I wouldn’t have a single problem with the Steelers even though they are rivals if it wasn’t for all of the moronic fans that give the few smart ones a bad name.

    Great signing.

    Is it possible to “like” this comment 1000 times? Couldn’t say it any better. As a Raven fan I have all the respect in the world for the Steelers and there fans but I hate how they run around saying “we got six, we got six” when the ravens have been around since 1996! I mean really?? Not to mention that 90% of steelers fans could not name more than 3 of those years they won without having to google it.
