Free agent defensive lineman Ray McDonald is staying in San Francisco.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the 49ers reached an agreement with McDonald on a five-year, $20 million deal that includes $7 million guaranteed.
McDonald has played his entire four-year career with the 49ers. He has played in all 32 games the last two seasons, but hasn’t started any.
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee notes that McDonald was one of the 49ers’ top priorities to re-sign, and he’ll likely step in as the starter at left defensive end if Aubrayo Franklin leaves.

no excuses now. earn your pay please and maul the division.
First Clement, and now McDonald. Cool! What’s happening with Nnamdi? Inquiring minds want to know. And where is that #2 QB. Where? Where? Where?
His 5 career sacks will be a great thing to hold on to…
Wow. These DE’s are being overpayed
Very necessary signing and I believe that McDonald will be a force. People around the league will learn his name over the course of the season.
Still waiting for the Niners to land the big fish though, reel in Nnamdi (or Joseph at the very least)!
Quick off the snap, ability to get into the backfield… the ends are solid, but good ole’ Isaac at NT becomes the key ingredient in how well this D plays! Gotta get Nnamdi!!
wonder how many times he’ll sack Tavaris
good sign. hes a solid starter with potential to improve.
Great news.

Ray McDonald hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time because the d-line had Sopoaga(solid LDE), Franklin(really good NT), and Justin Smith(who is more than earning his money at RDE).
With Franklin possibly gone that means Sopoaga will move to NT and finally McDonald gets to start.
Also with the sacks DEs in a 3-4 do not generate sacks as much as an OLB is supposed to. They are supposed to occupy blockers to help the LBs.
