Eagles, Cardinals talks heating up

kolbx-large Getty Images

The Eagles have removed cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the list of jerseys that can be purchased on the team’s website.  They may be putting it back on there soon.

Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Eagles and Cardinals have made “significant progress” on a deal that would send quarterback Kevin Kolb to Arizona for Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick.

Rodgers-Cromartie was Arizona’s first-round draft pick in 2008.  Kolb arrived in Philly via round two of the 2007 draft.

Though Kolb is likely better than anything else the Cardinals have, there’s good reason to wonder whether Kolb will be as good in Arizona as he was during his limited playing time in Philly.  Eagles coach Andy Reid helps quarterbacks play a lot better for the Eagles than they do for anyone else.

please let this deal happen. my niners would love to play against kolb 2 times a year. not sure why there is such a fuss over a qb that played great at certain times and awful at other times even in a high powered offense. kolb is average at best

  4. trbowman says: Jul 27, 2011 9:00 PM

Just because AJ Feeley failed doesn’t mean Kolb will. Besides, people said that about Aaron Rodgers….that he wouldn’t be good because no other QB coming out of Tedford’s system was.

    Bring on the Kolb!

  5. o0omorriso0o says: Jul 27, 2011 9:00 PM

WOOOOOO!!! C’mon Philly. Eagles had (before they rested their starters in their final game of the season) the #1 offense in the NFL with the only weakness being the right side of their OL (taken care of with Danny Watkins on round 1 of the draft) if they start addressing their Defensive issues (CB being the biggest problem) then Eagles (who already gave the Packers all they could handle in both games last year) could really be giving the Packers something to think about!!!

Kolb has 11 TDs and 14 INTs for his career. He has started a grand total of 7 games, and has a 3-4 record.

I hope AZ knows what they are getting.

  12. The Baseball Gods says: Jul 27, 2011 9:04 PM

“Eagles coach Andy Reid helps quarterbacks play a lot better for the Eagles than they do for anyone else.”

The only real good example of this would be A.J. Feeley, and the Dolphins were just complete idiots to think that Feeley was anywhere close to a franchise QB. Yes the eagles fleeced the Dolphins in that trade, but it was the Dolphins stupidity. This situation is completely different because the eagles selected Kolb with their first pick in the 2007 draft and planned to use him as their franchise QB until Mike Vick came along and put an end to that. Kevin Kolb has a much higher potential ceiling than A.J. Feeley ever had.

Also, if you want to say that McNabb could be an example of this you would at least have to wait for him to play for an organization that isn’t terrible like the Washington Redskins before you draw any conclusions about him not being able to play outside of the Eagles organization.

  14. whatchutalkinabouthillis says: Jul 27, 2011 9:04 PM

Larry Fitzgerald will make it easy for Kolb to look like a star. I think that Kolb could quite easily become the best QB in the NFC West. Is it worth DRC and a 1st round? I say no. DRC and a 2nd rounder? That makes a bit more sense.

I have a feeling that Kolb will be a bust. I’ve don’t see why everyone gushes over him so much. Dude hasn’t done jack in the league other that play a couple games against mediocre defenses. The Cards would be just a well off in developing John Skelton. I can see Kolb disappearing from the league in 2-3 years.

” Eagles coach Andy Reid helps quarterbacks play a lot better for the Eagles than they do for anyone else.”

I pointed out months and months ago that people should go look at the track record of trading for qb’s from Reid. He wins, the other side doesn’t. Period. This has the Miami situation written all over it.

  23. beastofeden says: Jul 27, 2011 9:09 PM

It’s a battle between Iggles fans and Cowardly Lions fans for the more delusional fan base: Vikings fans won last season.

The weed i smoke is called mike vick; coughing and choking constanly. They are dumping Korn on the Kolb and investing too much in Vick. He proved last year he couldn’t get it done against above avergae defenses and this year, well we’ll just say it’s going to look eerily similair to BrINT Favre’s second tour of duty in MIN.

Don’t forget this a team that got a 2 for AJ Feely lol and even better a 2 and 4 for Mcnabb who just got traded again one year later for 2 6th round picks. when it comes to trading QBs the Eagles just plain rule.

Eagles coach Andy Reid helps quarterbacks play a lot better for the Eagles than they do for anyone else.
    =================================
Right because it’s all Andy Reid’s fault that AJ Feeley had amazing weapons in Marty Booker and Chris Chambers to throw to and the mighty Sammy Morris to hand the ball off to.

It’s also Reid’s fault that McNabb had no O-line to protect him in Washington. He got to throw to Santana Moss and who else was on that team? And didn’t they have like 4 starting RBs last year?

Yup, ALL Reid’s fault. Blame him.

Arizona gives up a Pro Bowl CB, a 2nd round pick, and $30 million guaranteed for a QB that may or may not be a good starter in this league. Unbelievable…

  36. cured76 says: Jul 27, 2011 9:24 PM

That’s an unfair assessment of Kolb. In a lot of his games, he ad little to no reps with the starters and was thrust in for a game here, a game there in the middle of the season. His strengths and weaknesses are pretty well known but he’s clearly better than any other option AZ has and that’s why they’re sending back one of their young good players out our way. DRC is only 25 and has had 3 productive years in the league. CB was a MAJOR need for the Eagles and they addressed it pretty well with this trade. If the pick is a 2 or higher, I’d be pretty ecstatic.

  37. fooch21 says: Jul 27, 2011 9:25 PM

One again the Eagles take advantage of a lesser franchise, love it!

  38. melonnhead says: Jul 27, 2011 9:26 PM

It’s not that they play better, it’s that they play in a very QB-friendly system. Unfortunately for Reid and the Eagles “systems” like this are typically exposed in the playoffs against the better teams that the NFL has to offer.

  39. kspl1 says: Jul 27, 2011 9:28 PM

  41. rickthefactor says: Jul 27, 2011 9:30 PM

i dont understand why kolb is being treated like he’s this franchise qb. he was barely average last year with a very good offense. he threw as many tds as picks and gets sacked and coughs up the ball. so is he really going to be this pro bowl stud in arizona where the offense is half as good as philly?

  42. Awol.West says: Jul 27, 2011 9:32 PM

QBs are hard to come by.
Rodgers-Cromartie is a pro bowl player, but because he is a special teams returner as well.
He led the league in broken tackles allow.
This is riskier for my Eagles, who now need a backup because it’s questionable Vick can play a whole season.
Arizona has Peterson, Wilson, and Rhodes. They can make due with whoever is their 2nd CB because they now have a QB of the future.
I’m happy for Kolb and Orton getting to start, I’m sure Fitz and Marshall are happy as well…

Lest we forget mighty Brett Favre (the Buckhead Boozer) was traded for a mere 2nd rounder to the guy that drafted him.

2 things: a) it isn’t a done deal til it’s done. (b) No way the Dolphins want Orton more than Kolb. Saying that, the Dolphins might find the price more acceptable for Orton….which ought to tell you all ou need to know.

  49. norcaleagles says: Jul 27, 2011 9:55 PM

BEASTOFEDEN, Just because the Eagles lost vs the packers in the playoffs, that doesnt mean Vick choked. The Eagles lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champions and put up the hardest fight against the packers in last years postseason. And maybe Im wrong, but I think Philly was the underdog in that game. And I bet your weed is garbage too! Nothing but Northern Californias Finest for me :)

Kolb has literally done nothing. He hasn’t even lived up to his billing as a 2nd round pick. Yet somehow he’s worth a pro bowl cornerback AND a 2nd round pick?
I don’t know how he does it. But Andy Reid must be a wizard.

  51. mojosmagic says: Jul 27, 2011 10:03 PM

  58. ace8842 says: Jul 27, 2011 10:25 PM

I think Kolb will be good in warm weather. Many of his stints in Philly were against good teams and also he was playing with backups against first string defenses. His arm strength is only adequate, but he will play in a division with domes and warmer weather. Fitzergerald is a better WR than DeSean Jackson, overall.

Kevin Kolb on the other hand has started a mere 7 games and has a career QB rating of 73.2 and a 60.8% completion percentage, averaging 6.53 yards per attempt and everyone outside of Philly calls him a mediocre backup.

Man…a lot of trashing Kolb. I guess I get some of it. He’s not that experienced. His good games have been against mediocre teams. Then again, football people are really high on the guy and always have been. He’s shown that he can play well when he has time to prepare. He was going to be the Eagles’ new franchise QB until he got injured and Vick lit the world on fire. Most importantly, he’s one of the best QB options out there and shows real potential to be a great QB someday.

If I were a Cardinals fan, I’d be happy. Who do you have? Skelton? ROTFL. QB is your teams biggest need, and Kolb is a very good option. As an Eagles fan, I love this trade because we’re actually getting a good corner out of it, which we need desperately. That is, if it happens.

  77. greymares says: Jul 28, 2011 6:18 AM

yo! guys this is a quarterback driven league if you are trading for what you perceive as a franchise q.b. the key word being perceive, you will have to give up more than a cover corner. there is no connection with trading Kolb with trading A.J. or Mc Nabb. The Eagles hold the cards(no pun intended) unless you watched Kolb play all of those games your your evaluation doesn;t mean much, for example 6 of the 14 interceptions were 1/2 time hail mary’s. I would of hoped the eagles could have kept Kolb but as a free agent at the end of the year he walks. ( QUITE FRANKLY THE CARDINALS HAVE NO OTHER OPTION)

I like how the Eagles always get the better end of the deal.

For example, McNabb, Eagles got a second and third. McNabb then went for two 6th round pick (one conditional).

Now, if this trade goes down Eagles would be a force to be reckon with, with a couple of defensive additions (LB and DL). They would have the Packers eye on them for the second dangerous (I think most dangerous but whatever) in the NFC.

    Eagles get this deal done…
