When a player signs a multi-year deal, it usually includes a large signing bonus and sometimes other guaranteed money. If they have a high salary in later years of their contract, they are likely to get cut unless they are a star. But if he signed a 4 year 16 million deal, he probably already collected at least half of that. Not bad.

Even when he was healthy, he didn’t do too much for the G-men. Smart move. The only DT’s left on the Giants roster are Chris Canty and Linval Joseph (2nd rounder from 2010)…plus they drafted Marcus Austin in the 2nd in 2011. Am I missing someone?

With Bernard cut and Coefield signing with the Deadskins, I am guessing that they will add a free agent or two?!?

@tialen now you know why players always get signing bonuses. Most of these huge contracts you see players sign do not get paid in full.

Good luck to ya! Cant wait to see how this Defense pans out. Remember 07 was Spaggs’s 2nd year and they really stepped it up. This being PF’s 2nd year they should be killing QB’s this year…. Just ask all 3 of Chicago’s QB’s!!!!

Cutting now means no salary is paid for this year – usually saving money against the cap. However, the signing bonus (paid when the contract is signed, say 3 years ago) is prorated over the course of the contract for cap purposes e.g. 20 mil bonus 5 year deal = player gets 20 mil in year 1 but cap charge is only 4 mil per year.

However, if you cut that player before the contract expires then the remaining prorated cap money is charged against the cap and is known as dead money e.g. If the above player is cut after 3 years; 8 mil of the bonus remains to be charged against this years cap BUT the team doesn’t have to pay the guys salary – it can be more expensive (cap wise) to cut a player than retain him

So how does this work, if they cut him, then the implication of this article is that he doesn’t get paid. So how does a multi-year deal even matter if a team can cut the player whenever they choose and not pay the guy?
