Patriots keep Sammy Morris, want to retain Matt Light

Patriots running back Morris celebrates a two point conversion in front of Jets linebacker Harris during their AFC Divisional NFL playoff football game in Foxborough AP

The Patriots have been typically quiet for the first 32 hours of almost free agency.

You rarely hear the Patriots are in on a player, because agents know they could face retribution if unwanted word leaks out.  Agents don’t have to be shy when a deal is done, however.

As noted by our friend Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, Sammy Morris’ agent revealed the veteran running back returned to the team on a one-year contract.

In one sense, it’s a big of a surprise.  The Patriots are very deep at running back and Morris may have a tough time making the team.  On the other hand, Bill Belichick traditionally gives his favorite guys a chance to compete if they want the opportunity.  Morris has beaten the odds before.

One of the biggest questions facing the Patriots entering camp concerns left tackle Matt Light.  We haven’t heard a lot about him as a free agent yet, but Curran told Florio on PFT Live Wednesday that the team wants to keep him.

“The Patriots want to keep him here. They really need do. Solder’s the left tackle coming in as a rookie, no offseason and the responsibility of protecting Tom Brady’s blindside.

“Efforts to get anything from the Patriots or agents who deal with the Patriots are very difficult right now, but the Patriots do want to keep Matt Light, that’s confirmed. Whether or not he’s able to go out on the open market and demand a huge sum is unclear as well.”

I like Light and would love it if they could keep him for a year or two. That said, it must mean Solder is rawer than I thought since Light was protecting Brady’s blindside as a rookie.

A bit surprised w/ Morris. Would have thought Faulk had first dibs on vet presence guy. I like Sammy though.

Matt Light hasen’t been since 2006 one of the most over rated LT’s in the game, dont belive me check the tapes and watch him get beat at least 3 times a game

If the two rookie backs don’t fall on their faces, I don’t see any way Morris is with the team when the season starts.

How would they know what they have in Solder????? Light as a rookie had mini camp, full training camp and some off season program that he went through. What have the Pats been able to do with Solder???? NOTHING due to labor issues. Do try and think before you open the “yap” box.

At some point every player gets beat a time or two a game..

ML is still one of the top 10 LTs in the game

Light will win a SB w the Chiefs within two years.

I can see a two year deal for Light at reasonable money. Morris could be camp only, for the rookies. Surprised that it isn’t Fault though.

with the ridiculous money getting thrown around I dont see Light staying, someone will overpay. But if he takes a home town discount for a 2 year deal I would be happy.

I have no idea why Morris was resigned. Why draft two RB’s then resign this old and oft injured player. BJGE, Woodhead, Ridley, and Vareen….not much room for Sammy.
