Redskins land Barry Cofield

Barry Cofield AP

Defensive tackle Barry Cofield has been waiting to become a free agent for a long time.

He finally got his freedom on Tuesday, and found the right team interested in his services.  Josina Anderson of FOX31 in Denver reports that Cofield and the Redskins have agreed to terms on a new contract.

Cofield will help to fill the Haynesworth-sized hole in the middle of Washington’s defensive line.  Don’t be surprised if the Redskins still aggressively pursue other linemen, like Cullen Jenkins.

I hear washington is a magical place

I really like Cofield but why are the ‘Skins signing another 4-3 lineman to play on their 3-4 defense?

  3. MichaelEdits says: Jul 27, 2011 1:15 AM

I hear signing with Washington is the kiss of death

  4. lsjackson2 says: Jul 27, 2011 1:17 AM

The Redskins need bodies on both the offensive and defensive line. Good Signing for them. They should definitely go after Cullen Jenkins still. And they drafted that linemen out of Clemson. They are moving in the right direction.

As long as Shanny and Allen keep making the decisions and DAN SNYDER stays out of it they’ll be alright.

Great pickup! If Jenkins is landed, along with a solid cover corner to replace Carlos…

    Cofield

  7. emeraldcitymiracle says: Jul 27, 2011 1:33 AM

I wonder if they told him he’d be playing a one-technique in Washington…

  8. richm2256 says: Jul 27, 2011 1:56 AM

Didn’t he say “anywhere BUT the Giants!” …?

Did New York loosen their gun laws while he was in the can?

  9. trollaikman8 says: Jul 27, 2011 3:51 AM

Does he have the road rage in him to play in the foreskins 3-4? which is more of a 2-4 really.

    Suck it Shanahan. Bastard.

    (wanted Cofield in Denver…)

  11. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 27, 2011 5:43 AM

He will be sorry for this.

You just can’t turn down all those Danny Dollars.

Barry Cofield is still a great player. Keep sleeping on the Redskins if you wish…they are quietly rebuilding from the ground up.

Every Giants fan knows that Bernard is the anchor Def Tackle on NY”s D-line. #96 WILL be missed!

Sorry to see him go. BTW, that’s a picture of Fred Robbins.

he’s number 98.thanks for the copliment.

  16. jaxjoe says: Jul 27, 2011 7:01 AM

I don’t think he’s replacing Haynesworth. But coupled with Jenkins, the 2nd round pick, Golston and Holliday are on the outside looking in.

  17. stealthhawk says: Jul 27, 2011 7:29 AM

    @ illbillgiantz4lif

Really? They’re rebuilding? With Rex Grossman and John Beck at QB, a rag-tag OL, no WR’s, and more overpaid defensive free agents that don’t even fit in with their schemes? Danny Snyder everybody.

  18. therealsmiley says: Jul 27, 2011 7:30 AM

From what I read he’s an unselfish team player. That’s what wee at NT. Hail!!

  19. therealsmiley says: Jul 27, 2011 7:43 AM

Stealthawk – you have no idea what you’re talking about. Hail!

  20. jenniferxxx says: Jul 27, 2011 7:43 AM

    He’s not a NT though.

Good move and there’s more to come…

Now onto my other issue there seems to be a lot of hating going on I mean all the criticizm as to who will be Washinton’s QB but I unlike some here won’t pass judgement until I have solid proof…I mean come on really how many teams passed on Tom Brady figuring he couldn’t win??? 32 teams for 6 rounds…

And who was that bagging groceries and playing in the arena league because teams thought he didn’t have what it took to play in the NFL oh that’s right Kurt Warner….

Sure Beck may not have NFL highlights to give you give goosebumps and all we have is 4 games on a really bad Miami team as a rookie don’t use that as evidence people, Grossman may not thrill you either however he did get the Bears to the Superbowl and my only issue with him is he’s a Gator QB and I haven’t seen one yet who’s panned out in the NFL. Here’s another QB no one thought could win at the NFL but given a second chance proved skeptics wrong remember one Steve Young during his Tampa days???

So it would be wise for all the naysayers to hold their tongues until the dust has settled…

So smart. These Redskins are on the up and up because ShannyAllen are so smart. Nice work boys!

  23. bcjim says: Jul 27, 2011 7:55 AM

Based on that picture, he aint passing the Shannahan conditioning test either.

  24. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 27, 2011 8:04 AM

Once Again, Daniel Snyder overpays for a DT that played in a 4-3 defense that will have to make the transition to a 3-4. ( see Albert Haynesworth and how that worked out).

  25. gmoedc says: Jul 27, 2011 8:17 AM

“I really like Cofield but why are the ‘Skins signing another 4-3 lineman to play on their 3-4 defense?” – Are you guys serious? Please, find me a 3-4 DT that hasn’t played in a 4-3!!

@Stealthhawk Other than Fat Al – who is an overpaid defensive free agent on the skins??

Danny’s overpaying days are done kids, let it go. Vinny is gone.

Yeah Shanny was great at signing free agents in Denver!

Travis Henry, Marquand Manuel, Marlon McCree, Sam Adams, Alvin McKinley… oh boy it could go on forever.

  27. therealsmiley says: Jul 27, 2011 8:28 AM

Yeah…the Eagles know what it takes to make a championship team. Hail!!

That was Plaxico Burress. Is this story about Plaxico Burress? Does that picture LOOK like Plaxico Burress? Does that man pictured LOOK like a legitimate “red zone target”?

    spytheweb says: Jul 27, 2011 6:04 AM

Sorry dude, but that’s Barry “Don’t Taze Me, Bro” Cofield. Fred Robbins never had facial hair.

  29. pnut87 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:38 AM

Of course they do… Washington loves NY free agents. They want the inside scoop on NY schemes.

  30. bturner032002 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:42 AM

All the guy needs to do is shift his weight left or right and just make a small hole for Beast Orakpo to slide through!
