Report: 49ers are Jets’ main competition in Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes

Nnamdi Asomugha may be staying in the Bay Area.

Although the conventional wisdom that the Jets are working hard to land Asomugha remains in place, there’s a new competitor to the Jets in the competition for Asomugha’s services: The San Francisco 49ers.

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network reports that the Jets’ main competition for Asomugha right now is San Francisco, and the 49ers are in it strong.

The Houston Texans are also still in the mix, and it’s entirely possible that there’s a surprise entrant in the Asomugha sweepstakes will make an appearance. But right now, San Francisco is apparently looking like a good destination.

Adding Asomugha, the ex-Raiders cornerback who’s widely viewed as the top prize in all of free agency, would be a huge coup for the 49ers.

  1. Wait, I thought Dan Snyder signed everyone? I mean, that’s what all the jokes are about, right?

  2. Wouldn’t you think after years of dealing with a terrible organization, he’d want to play somewhere where he can win? Especially with as much as he made in Oakland.

  3. That would be cool. I miss the Giants/Niners rivalry. Would be good to see it again. Im getting old because it seems like just yesterday Simms/Lott were butting heads at the end of that classic MNF game ( Giants got last laugh).

  4. Wow, I would not have guessed 49ers would even be in the mix. I was thinking the Texans or Cowboys would break the bank.

  5. Little late to the party PRO FOOTBALL TALK. I wrote this when everyone was dropping over the JETS. The 49ers will be the team here, they have the money, they have the NEED, and he already resides in the Bay Area, DONE DEAL!

  6. I think everyone in the NY area is rooting for the 49ers here… we Giants fans already see enough Revis jerseys.

I would like to see the NFC West actually have one good defensive back. We’ll see what he can do against Hakeem Nicks this season.

  7. Where are the Texans in all this? I’m surprised they haven’t officially jumped in this lottery yet. They’ve certainly got both the need and cash available to invest in Asomugha.

Um yeah, forget a QB and receivers 49ers…spend all that cash on Nnamdi….Cause Defense is your weak spot.

    Not
    =============================

Ummm, did you watch any games last year? Defense IS their weak spot. Alex Smith and the offense(with a healthy Frank Gore) could score. But NOT when they fall behind by 2 scores and pretty much have to pass the rest of the game to catch up.

Can the offense be better? Yes, it could be a lot better. But the defense was the GLARING weakness of this team last year.

  9. Nnamdi is scurred to go to a division that features Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham (in no particular order) and/or whatever scrubs the Redskins can scare up. OMGee what a nightmare for him if he were to sign with the Redskins!

  10. I still wouldn’t rule out the Falcons as a dark horse for Nnamdi either. They made a statement by drafting Julio Jones that they want a Super Bowl and they want it NOW. Nnamdi would put them right back in that conversation. Wouldn’t be terribly shocked if they come out of nowhere with an offer.

  11. Dear Jets,

Please use a quarter of your salary cap for two players at the same position.

    Sincerely,
    The Rest of the League

As a Jets fan I can say GO NINERS!!! Nnamdi to the Jets is just pure media hype.
    _____________________

Just like the Jets and NY media saying Revis is the best corner. All hype. They may be saying Revis Island this and that. If he’s an Island, Nnamdi is the ocean surrounding it..

  13. I can’t see the 49rs making this deal, and I can’t believe there aren’t more teams in the mix considering his skills.

  14. i hope he signs there…

People are such jokes saying the Jets are “BUYING” their way. Yes they have made some very nice additions through FA and Trades: Santonio Holmes, Bart Scott, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace…etc…

But the point is the NUCLEUS, mostly the BEST PART of the team has been drafted by the Jets: Mangold, Harris, Revis, Ferguson, Sanchez, Greene, Cotchery, Brad Smith, Slauson, Bryan Thomas, Sione Pouha, Mike Devito…you get the point.

  15. Dear Jets,

Please use a quarter of your salary cap for two players at the same position.

    Sincerely,
    The Rest of the League

-More like three-quarters of their salary cap.

  16. Mike Lombardi is only reporting this to piss off Al Davis.

This might backfire on Mike Lombardi and fuel the fire Davis needs to resign him.

  17. @readimgram1 — it kind of is…..Our offense won that game against the saints and yea you could argue that they left too much time on the clock but our D let Brees cruise down field for the field goal. So yea I’d rather we cut Clements or Spencer and sign Nnamdi and keep improving our D. Also look at our draft class this year and last year, we are absolutely stacked at receiver and TE then dont even bring up QB. Even if we cut Carr we still have Smith, Kaepernick, and just signed Masoli as a UDFA. I’d rather we get in a bidding war for Nnamdi or Joseph then Hasselbeck or Vince Young…….Plus what good receiver is still on the market Rice or Edwards???? Unless we cut morgan we have no reason to go after either then because we are already paying premium money to Crabtree and VD.

Assuming by your name that youre a Steelers fan….you should be smart enough to know that nobody thats gonna pay him almost $2o million a year is going to “win”…if by win, you mean a championship.

  19. all this while the Bengals are trying to reach the floorv to keep Joseph

Thats the guys to go after if you need a CB right now

seriously, when did this position begin to garner so much attention. Oh yeah it was the overhype about Revis that did that. Until he pulled a hammy getting beat by Moss.

There is no such thing as a shut down CB, they all have help by way of Safety or pass rush.

  20. Nnamdi wanted to explore acting. If my memory serves me correct Tyler perry studios is inAtlanta. Dimitrioff better start using hometown resources and get nnamdi in the A!!!

  21. As a Raiders fan, I hate to see Aso go. He’s everything you want in a player. Excellence on and off the field. But is a Man corner worth a huge portion of your cap? Again, hate to see a very quality player and man leave the Silver & Black fold, but IMO, the price for that position is going to be way too high.

  22. So long son. You couldn’t make plays in the silver and black, hopefully you do the same in a different jersey. Still a stand up guy though.

  23. “Um yeah, forget a QB and receivers 49ers…spend all that cash on Nnamdi….Cause Defense is your weak spot. Not.”

49er had one of the top 5 WEAKEST defensive backfields in the league last season, do you watch football, or just talk out your ass?

Keep sleeping. The Rams have 2 VERY good corners in Bradley Fletcher and Ron Bartell. Looks like we are adding Mikell also. Nnamdi is an excellent corner, wish he was going to the another division…..

….you should be smart enough to know that nobody thats gonna pay him almost $2o million a year is going to “win”…if by win, you mean a championship.

Excellent point here…when a guy commands that kind of a salary, theres little chance that the team that can afford to pay it is a contender. There comes a point when you have to choose top end money, or potential SB ring.

  26. the jetties coaches wont be able to pronounce his name…he’s goin to the 9er’s.
    also…whats the big deal…11 picks in 9years? 2 sacks? OVER-RATED. give him the $!!lol

  27. @igeorgiaboy I see why they say us Falcon “Fans” are some of the worst in the league. You do realize we gave a ton of money to Dunta Robinson last yr right? We also have about 3 diff. linemen to resign (Dahl, Clabo, Blalock) Although I’m Sure Nnamdi and Tyler Perry would be great for each other (In more ways than one. Anybody ever seen Nnamdi w/ a Female Love interest? Quite fitting that he wants to also go to San Fran as well). Allocating that much money into one position would be detrimental imo.

  28. I really thought JERRUH would have thrown an offer his way..still kinda think Dallas might show up in the mix. I think they might be after the Bucs lineman now after releasing most of the O line.

  29. Nate is getting 14 mil to get burn by elite wrs and sit in water baths. Pay the man, and bring him to the 9ers!!

    ————————————————-
Snyder will sign him, but it will be 4 years from now, when he’s well past his prime.

  31. Revis is good. But he gets way more help over the top. Nnamdi is a true coverage corner.

  32. Bay area guy..doesn’t have to uproot anything… Only thing that changes is where he drives to work …good move for him

  33. Bob McNair is the worst owner in the NFL. He doesn’t know how enraged Texans fans will be if we are not appeased with Nnamdi. Get the feathers ready, I’ll start heating up the tar.

    ———————————

I watch them when they play my Rams….

    So here we go

    49ers offense

    29th in % of 3rds downs made
    24th in total points
    24th in yards per game

    Defense
    13th in yards allowed
    16th in points allowed
    19th is % of allowing 3rd downs

Who is talking out of their ass now smart guy?

LOL. go watch game film with Revis and Calvin Johnson. yeah, then you’ll come back and delete your post.

  36. You people are ridiculous with all of this….I thought he wanted to play for a winner talk.
    NEWSFLASH!!!
If he were on the team last year the Niners would have been in the playoffs instead of Seattle. Also, He would not have gotten burnt to a crisp every game like Clements did or fumble the game sealing INT against the Falcons like Clements did.
(Did I mention Seattle got in by 1 game?)
Basically this move is what will help us become better….Dont you ppl know how football works????

  37. Bob McNair is the worst owner in the NFL. He doesn’t know how enraged Texans fans will be if we are not appeased with Nnamdi. Get the feathers ready, I’ll start heating up the tar.

    ————————————————-

Problem with blaming McNair for this is Asomugha has already stated he doesn’t want to play for the Texans.

  38. I still have nightmares of nate running back the int against falcons yelling get down get down.smh y didnt u get down..anyways I dont care if nmandi has 0 int 0tackles0pass deflectlions as long as larry fitz has 2 rec for16yrds..its not.what nmandi cant do its what he stops thd others team best wr from doing..

Seriously, as a steelers fan you should know Rex’s D values cover corners so he can bring everyone else at the QB in some crazy blitz package

  40. I don’t see how the Jets have the cap room to make this happen. Nnamdi has a ton of charities in the bay area.

Anyone who thinks this wouldn’t help SF in the biggest way does not know the team. Their D rank would jump 3-5 spots by his presence alone.

I still can’t see him landing in SF, but wow it would be a good thing for them if it did.

As a steelers fan he doesn’t know anything about the rest of the league.

  42. Asomugha is the best corner in the league and its pretty cut and dry.

the 9ers have a huge need at CB. defense may be the teams strongest unit, but its not an elite unit, its mediocre because of the back end and a needed boost in a pass rush.

whoever gets Nnamdi will overspend, but id rather overspend on the player at top of his game than a guy like Nate Clements. the 9ers can essentially cut Nate and spend that money on Nnamdi and maybe only shell out another 2-4 mil more per.

so for SF it makes logical sense. it greatly improves the team while financially not changing much.

  43. People who think Nnamdi isn’t the real deal are people who haven’t watchef many Raider games. Because the Raiders have been down and out, there hasn’t been too many Raiders prime time games, which means people haven’t had a chance to see what Nnamdi does. I watch EVERY Raiders game. Trust me, the millions of fans, Nnmdi’s peers, and the various suitors who are willing to pay tons of money for Nnamdi’s services: he’s legit. He’s almost boring to watch because teams don’t throw his way. He’s one of a few guys I want to see do well even if he doesn’t re-sign with Oakland because he’s very good at what he does, he’s suffered losing seaon after losing season, and he’s a class act. Best of luck to you, Nnamdi. I hope you’re back in a Raiders jersey, but I won’t hold my breath.

  44. If we get him, it will be very intriguing to see the Asomugha/Fitzgerald matchups twice a year!

  45. If he wants to be on a mediocre team, why doesn’t he stay where he is?
Oh… Right. Al’s tired of paying zillions for a novelty player that hasn’t made them better. Got it.

  46. I would love for Nnamdi to be in a 9ers jersey. However, there are so many glaring holes on defense AND offense that signing one high priced (albeit the best in the league) may hamper the ability to address the other holes.
