Sidney Rice picks the Seahawks

Receiver Sidney Rice didn’t have an extensive market for his services.  In the end, it came down to two teams:  the Vikings and the Seahawks.

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Rice has picked the Seahawks.

It’s a five-year deal, and it reunites him with Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

UPDATE:  A league source tells PFT that the contract is worth $41 million, with $18.5 million guaranteed.  The deal also includes $3 million in escalators tied to Pro Bowl berths.

Why? first of all its the Seahawks and second of all they have no damn QB!!

  2. rugdog100 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:54 PM

    I’d say mostly Bevell…

  3. moelester says: Jul 27, 2011 7:55 PM

Welcome back to sub par numbers Mr. Rice.

  4. goawayeverybody says: Jul 27, 2011 7:55 PM

So does this mean Braylon Edwards is going to the Vikings?

Probably. Him or Randy Moss I bet.

  5. kuya206 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:55 PM

Good stuff… The question is: Will he pass his physical on Friday? That hip needs to be fully healed…

  6. GrillChiller says: Jul 27, 2011 7:55 PM

    Sidney Rice is an idiot.

First he delays his hip surgery…then he chooses T-Jack over Ponder and or McNabb?!

    F’n kidding me?!

  7. cardsfann1 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:56 PM

Wow. He is making a bad decision. The only qb worse than Jackson is Derek Anderson!!! He will regret this decision if he wants to win.

  8. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 27, 2011 7:56 PM

Wow. Seahawks better hope Tarvaris Jackson can get him the ball

  9. ejmat2 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:57 PM

Seya Sidney. Hate to see you go but you’re just not worth that much yet. You had a great year in 2009 but that was with a QB that threw to you 70% of the time. See how that works with Tarvaras Jackson. Bad career move.

  10. JackLeone says: Jul 27, 2011 7:57 PM

The Viking are moving to Seattle one by one, player by player

  11. The SACK Lunch Blog says: Jul 27, 2011 7:57 PM

Interesting pick up for Seattle. If he can play like he did with Favre, Rice can be great for their offense.

  12. tre4rere says: Jul 27, 2011 7:57 PM

WOWWWWWW 41 million for a guy whos only good year was with Brett Favre, he was hurt almost all year, and people say the Redskins overpay….

  13. cereal blogger says: Jul 27, 2011 7:57 PM

Terrible move Minny, should have stepped up

  14. parkeranddrusilla says: Jul 27, 2011 7:58 PM

Houshmandzadeh part deux! If you’re gonna bring a team over, bring a winning team, not the 07 Vikings, minus the o-line, d-line, db’s, RB,….

  15. grantgoodman93 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:58 PM

idk why someone would go there honestly…no qb, and they seem to eat wr’s alive recently. I.e. Housh. But I like rice and wish him the best

  16. shieldsisland37 says: Jul 27, 2011 7:58 PM

Only 2 seasons ago the Vikings were one fg from the Superbowl. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

    WOO HOO!

  20. siggtacular says: Jul 27, 2011 7:59 PM

Good choice. I think Tarvaris Jackson is really gonna flourish in that new Seattle offense. Sidney Rice, Mike Williams, and Golden Tate are three solid targets.

Woud’ve liked to see him in Purple and Black though.

  21. calihawk says: Jul 27, 2011 7:59 PM

Tavaris Jackson goes deep to Sidney Rice…… Touchdown Seahawks.

  22. joegibbsisking says: Jul 27, 2011 7:59 PM

Rice, Williams, and Tate may be good enough to win the West for Seattle no matter who is throwing the ball.

  23. SpartaChris says: Jul 27, 2011 8:00 PM

Nice get by the Sea Hawks. Even better that it takes one dynamic playmaker out of Minnesota.

  24. xstaticonradio says: Jul 27, 2011 8:00 PM

Here come the dumb Vikings fans saying how he’s not that good and they’ll be fine with Harvin and…uh

  25. claymatthewsisonsteroids says: Jul 27, 2011 8:00 PM

It must have been T-Jacks jump passes that convinced him.

  26. walletweb says: Jul 27, 2011 8:00 PM

way to go Seahwaks! Its going to be a good year

  27. kilo0986 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:01 PM

Dear god he’s a dumb Ass…. Now we’ll never hear from him. Sydney do.you know who’s.throwing the ball to.you? Yeah me neither! You’re wasting your talent!

  28. mnfaninaz says: Jul 27, 2011 8:01 PM

LULZ…. shocking that the Hawks are rebuilding every other season.

$41 million, with $18.5 million guaranteed

    hilarious.
decent receiver, but 41 mill, 18.5??? wow.

    Skol Vikings…

  29. contra74 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:02 PM

That one hurts. Now we will find out if Favre made Rice. With T-Jack behind center I am sure we will know Favre made Rice. Good news is the Vikes have salary cap space.

  30. losunderdogs says: Jul 27, 2011 8:02 PM

Not bad for a player who only played 6 games last year, and bad move for a team with no1 to throw to him lol….Keep Up The Great Work Pete

  31. pettergriffen says: Jul 27, 2011 8:03 PM

WoW i wish i had seattle in my divison for 2 gimme wins.

  32. hus10188 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:03 PM

This guy is a lot better than Holmes and cheaper as well.

He will prove to be the better player, shame he doesn’t have a stud QB throwing him the football.

I have Adrian Peterson carrying the ball more than 1000 times this year, as well.

  33. grandpoopah says: Jul 27, 2011 8:03 PM

Does this mean Rice believes in Tarvaris Jackson, or is this a purely financial decision? Any idea what the Vikings offered?

  34. canetic says: Jul 27, 2011 8:03 PM

    So it’s money over football.

  35. bearsrulepackdrool says: Jul 27, 2011 8:03 PM

Looks like the city of Seattle won the lottery. The Mariners broke their losing streak. Sidney Rice signs.

  36. blizzard01 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:04 PM

I don’t think Seattle will have to worry about the Pro Bowl escalators. Wide receivers don’t ever go to Seattle and get better. Fade out Sidney.

  37. nineroutsider says: Jul 27, 2011 8:04 PM

Going to need Nnamdi to lock him and every other Wide out down…

  38. mnsportsguy79 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:04 PM

unbelievable!!! Rice I hope you rot in Seattle with T-Junk throwing you ducks (if they’re not pick-sixed) all day long…you and your agent are what’s wrong with and caused the lockout in the first place!!!

  39. halestorm74 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

Have fun with Tjack. What happened to Loyalty?
We took you in the second and you give the Vikes one good year and then jump ship for a little extra cash? What can you do with 41 mil that you couldn’t do with 32 Mil?

    Have fun losing with Tjoke

  40. bearsrulepackdrool says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

looks like a bootleg version of the Vikings from last year.

Marshawn Lynch ain’t exactly Adrian Peterson. But, this team looks eerily similar.

  41. stealthhawk says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

    Oooooooh yeah!

  42. gregjenningsfanclub says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

Rice will be a big time bust in Seattle. She will be another Bernard Berrian type bust. All, hype, no play. She will have fun with Tarvaris Jackson at QB, WOW, Seattle doesn’t want to win I guess.

  43. romoscollarbone says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

Good for him. The Vikings really didn’t have a solid exit strategy for Lord Favre, huh?

  44. jebdamone says: Jul 27, 2011 8:05 PM

    this makes me extremely sad.

  45. phillychzstk2012 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:06 PM

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  47. jebdamone says: Jul 27, 2011 8:07 PM

    vikings FAIL!!!!!!!

  48. goldeelox says: Jul 27, 2011 8:07 PM

Hey, now the Vikings can afford Bernard Berrian. All is saved.

  49. hawkjuice says: Jul 27, 2011 8:08 PM

  50. adsbad28 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:08 PM

  51. gooftroopers says: Jul 27, 2011 8:08 PM

Wow well that stinks for Vikings fans. So we have Bernard who should be leaving, Harvin and Aromashadu(spl?) that should scare the league. Fear us Fear us NOW!

  52. doctorfootball says: Jul 27, 2011 8:08 PM

Guess he doesn’t like McNabb lol He picked Tavaris Jackson over McNabb. I’m sure his real motivation was the money.

  53. cotopolisprime says: Jul 27, 2011 8:08 PM

Damn, big loss for the Vikes. They need to go grab Braylon some McNabb can have some more weapons to work with!

him and rosenhaus torpedoed the vikings 2010 season w/ that BS surgery or pay me the 1st day of camp last year. You can have him…

Real Ballers show up day one. i.e. MOSS, AP, PERCY, and are deserved that stature of respect.

    Rice can wolb me…

  56. motown2 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:09 PM

WOW! Sidney Rice is getting paid Jerry Rice type money! What is this world coming too?!?!?

  57. scoops1 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:10 PM

T-jack and Rice were terrible together in Minny…what makes playing in Seattle any different

  58. goawayeverybody says: Jul 27, 2011 8:10 PM

Btw, does anyone else find it extremely odd that neither the Packers nor the Saints have been mentioned much at all. They have the most free agents and they are the last two Super Bowl Champions.

  59. theroguescripter says: Jul 27, 2011 8:11 PM

Mike Williams and Sidney Rice on the same team?

    Watch out NFC West

  60. Robert Chandler says: Jul 27, 2011 8:11 PM

Bye Sidney. Good luck with the recurring nightmare that is T-Jack! And Bevell is vastly overrated, so you are about to regret the decision. Not that the Vikings offer much better right now, but why other teams didn’t come a-callin’ is a clue. Your punk move to stall surgery last year hurt your team, and you never seemed to care a whit about your comrades. I am not impressed with any part of your character or judgment, but then, you are a multi-millionaire… and I am but a humble, old white guy with no money. You win, but I don’t respect you much.

  61. zeckwreck says: Jul 27, 2011 8:11 PM

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! BMW at his natural possession receiver role, Rice the true #1, and Tate developing into the slot position. Yikes.

Wait until we get a QB.

  62. duluthvikesfan says: Jul 27, 2011 8:11 PM

Enjoy all that money, Sidney, while you disappear into the abyss in Seattle. Two years from now people in Seattle will be saying “Remember those guys Rice and Jackson who used to play football here?”

  63. sweetnlow44 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:12 PM

Nice. Now we need someone to throw the ball to him.

  64. welzy says: Jul 27, 2011 8:12 PM

The Seahawks have lost their collective minds.

  65. axespray says: Jul 27, 2011 8:13 PM

Vikings/Seahawks are probably gonna start getting mad at each other, keep stealing and targeting similar free agents and what not…ya’ heaRd?!

  66. olmrj says: Jul 27, 2011 8:14 PM

    suck it vikings

  67. purplepete24 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:14 PM

Rice benefited from Favre’s career season. Other then that 3 injury filled seasons with little to no production. Not worth 41 million.

  68. randomjim says: Jul 27, 2011 8:14 PM

That’s a lot of guaranteed $ for a guy who had one great year with Favre, who also had a good year. Injuries before & injuries last year. Roll the dice.

  69. dezsjeweler says: Jul 27, 2011 8:15 PM

Who’s going to throw him the ball? Oh I forgot Andrew Luck next year when they have the first pick in the draft!

  70. thejabronisayz says: Jul 27, 2011 8:15 PM

It wouldn’t matter if they had Jerry Rice in his prime, so long as they have no one to throw him the ball.

See: TJ Houshmanzadeh and Deion Branch.

  71. rkjacobson says: Jul 27, 2011 8:16 PM

Enjoy playing with Tarvaris Jackson and Darrell Bevell with his offense only Brett Favre could run (for 1 year anyway)…

Minnesota will miss him! Unfortunately for him, I dont think he will thrive in Seattle. Might have been better off in MN…

  72. brownicus says: Jul 27, 2011 8:16 PM

I thought the Vikings were supposed to move to LA not Seattle?

  73. dbellina says: Jul 27, 2011 8:17 PM

Well Sid Kid, you will be missed. I wish him the best of luck with the Seahawks.

  76. qdog112 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:18 PM

Good for Rice and Jackson. The train wreck in MINN with Childress and Favre nearly destroyed the franchise and thwarted the growth of many players. The Rice defection signals trouble in Paradise. Don’t look now, but DET has passed you.

  77. Dynasty says: Jul 27, 2011 8:19 PM

  80. mrlynch33 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:20 PM

I’m a Niners fan first and foremost but…..I wish we got him. I still think the Niners will beat the Hawks but at this point we need to make some moves. Don’t get it twisted Seattle the Niners will have a premier CB probably Joseph maybe Nnamdi (doubt it). That will even Rice out & the signing won’t mean much. T Jack ain’t that great…haha T Jack YES

  81. pacash80 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:20 PM

Now all they need is someone to throw the ball to him.

  82. Todd Haley's Temper says: Jul 27, 2011 8:20 PM

Ok, now Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst contracts make complete sense. Brett Favre to the Seahawks!

  83. chipwade says: Jul 27, 2011 8:20 PM

If the Cards trade DRC there will be no one in the NFC West good enough or tall enough to cover Williams and Rice. Seahawks win the NFC West yet again with a losing record.

Very excited for this pick up.

  84. watermelon1 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:21 PM

Completely baffled that there were only two teams really interested in this guy. And now he’s goes to Seattle where it will be hard for him to produce with a mediocre QB and a mediocre team in general. Now people will call him a bust, when really he just went to a bad team.

Good thing is… they play in an absolutely awful division. Bad thing is… the Rams could become decent pretty quickly.

  85. woodyg says: Jul 27, 2011 8:22 PM

  90. dcviking says: Jul 27, 2011 8:24 PM

Mixed emotions — other than Harvin, the Vikes have little at WR.

On the other hand, Rice can’t stay healthy and really screwed the Vikings last year by having surgery during training camp.

One less Drew Rosen-louse client…next question!

  91. sctravis77 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:26 PM

What a retard. Does he realize the Seahawks have no QB??? Tavarass Jackson sure as hell wont do as good as McNabb will.

  101. jebdamone says: Jul 27, 2011 8:39 PM

randy time…third time is the charm.

  102. andyreidisfat says: Jul 27, 2011 8:40 PM

So heres a team i don’t get. They go out and pay top dollar for another really tall wide out with a lot of skill (love him or hate him S. Holmes has never EVER put up a season like Rice has) yet they add two QB’s who both flamed out and the one who expected to be the started flamed out even with a talent like rice.

Now had Seattle been smart and moved for Kolb a 1 and second whatever it would have been, They would be by far in the drivers seat for the NFC west for years to come. Some how i get the feeling they are planing on tanking the season to get luck to play with those two big WR. Tjack isn’t going to get it done.

I don’t get teams that spend hords of money on skill position player but don’t ever spend the money on a QB. Heck Hasselback coming back would have made them the favorite to win that division.

  103. whitesheetz says: Jul 27, 2011 8:40 PM

All haters talk know. 2010 is over as is the lockout. Speculation will be put to rest in a matter of a few weeks.. Keep taking your shots. You’ve earned it. But a new season arises. And all the talk has to be put to rest and the beef in between the hashes will decide what is and what isn’t.

  104. cusoman says: Jul 27, 2011 8:43 PM

  108. thephantomstranger says: Jul 27, 2011 8:49 PM

Looks like Seattle is trying to recapture the magic of the 2010 Minnesota Vikings.

  109. Awol.West says: Jul 27, 2011 8:50 PM

I’m not a Seahawks fan, but Pete Carroll is quietly making moves over his short stint.
A young offensive line, with Jackson at QB.
With him, you are trying to control the clock, run the ball (either him or the RBs), and keep the passed simple for him (WC offense).
RBs Lynch and Forsett, a decent combination.
Sidney Rice joins Golden Tate, Mike Williams, and John Carlson.

Defensively, they have a young solid LB core with Tatupu, Hawthorne, and Curry.
And they have Trufant and Earl Thomas in the secondary.
The weakness of the team is at defensive line and filling the 2nd CB and SS positions.
Oh and btw, they made the playoffs, beat the Saints, knocked out Cutler and gave the Bears a run for their money.
Haha, no I’m not on their bandwagon, but I an acknowledge these under-the-radar teams.
They are in the NFC West ya know…

  110. coleman121280 says: Jul 27, 2011 8:50 PM

  112. stealthhawk says: Jul 27, 2011 8:51 PM

I love Vikings fans saying “WTF, the Seahawks have no QB!”

You guys have a lard ass Donovan McNabb who doesn’t even seem interested in playing any more, a rookie, and Joe Webb.

    Uhh…good luck with that.

  113. zeckwreck says: Jul 27, 2011 8:53 PM

    @mrlynch33

First, your name is Mr. Lynch, so you’re already a Seahawks fan.

Secondly, even if you nab Nnamdi and he shuts down Rice, what can you do about BMW?!? Last year Mike was getting double-covered like crazy, now this year, he’s facing #2 CB’s. Watch out!

  114. zeckwreck says: Jul 27, 2011 8:55 PM

You guys aren’t seeing the long term idea here…Shore up young explosive O, just in time for your 1st-round QBOTF to step in comfortably. Our GM came up with Green Bay, and look how that idea worked for them?

Why wouldn’t the 49ers go after him….STUPID!!!! We need another Rice in San Fran

  116. trollhammer20 says: Jul 27, 2011 9:04 PM

Why does everyone assume Jackson was signed as a starter? Oh, right, because they don’t follow Seattle very closely. In case you didn’t know, this will be Whitehurst’s year to show if he can get the job done. With Hass gone, there was one QB on the roster, and they needed a backup. Jackson fit the bill well.

The offensive line has had a major overhaul, and is now probably the youngest unit in the league. Okung (second year), Unger (third year, but missed all of last season after foot surgery), Moffitt and Carpenter (rookies), with Gallery the lone veteran…add some depth, stay out of the massive injury troubles the line has faced the last several seasons, they might be able to get a running game going with Lynch and Forsett.

If that happens (which is a big “if”, since it’s going to take some time for that young line to gel), a guy like Rice makes perfect sense. Williams as the possession guy, Rice as the deep threat, Obomanu as the #3, Kris Durham giving them the capability of having three receivers all 6’4″ or taller on the field at once, and Golden Tate rounding things out.

If the line can keep Whitehurst upright, he’s not going to lack for targets.

Now, shore up the defense. Keep Mebane, bring in Joseph, and this will be a very good free agency period for Carroll and Schneider.

Seems like a lot of grumpy Viking fans here. I guess when the highlight of the offseason is the fact the roof is back on your broken down stadium, or the Redskins actually coming out ahead on a transaction at the expense of the Vikings, the best way to vent is marginalize ex players who were misused by an organization far too focused on chasing Favre.

Advice: Maybe a cruise on a ferry is the tonic or an Everson Griffen Vegas party will help cure those blues.

  123. minniepride says: Jul 27, 2011 9:31 PM

Its pretty obvious that Rice chose money over career. T-Jack is a joke and so are the rest of the back-up QBs that Seattle brought over. He will collect his money but that will be it. I suppose its a smart play for him because he is injury prone and will never play a full season. Farve made him!

Because the Seahawks told Rice that Bevell is bringing Favre to the team. Whoa…I can’t believe I didn’t see this sooner. Also that would explain the lack of interest on the part of the Seahawks to re-sign the guy who took them to the playoffs and was the FACE OF THE FRANCHISE for as long as I can recall……It’s gonna happen. Seattle may be “rebuilding” but they are also quickly becoming stacked with young talent. Whether or not Tavaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst or any other QB is throwing to him this is a team on the upswing. Better to go with a young team than a old broken down one concidering the Vikings have um let me see….no one to throw to him either. And he took his own sweet time about coming back. Other people may argue that’s not how it went down. But that’s how it looked to me.

It’s not the end of the world that Rice left. He was a good receiver when healthy. He improved a lot in his time but you can’t justify paying him that much yet. The Favre year was nice but his only 16 gm season. The other seasons aren’t too good stat wise even though Rice showed flashes of what he offers IF healthy. Whitehurst didn’t show much last year and could eventually lose the job to Tarvaris if he can’t put up #’s with that WR group and Marshawn. Seattle should be good for next 5 years but vikes ain’t that far away. Seattle is still seeing the effects of Mike Holmgren just like the Pack did before them. We would be saying the same thing about my vikes if we got Holmgren. Seattle has had recent success while the vikes have had success all throughout it’s history. We’ll be bad this year. 6-10 at best but we will get a good draft pick next year and rebuild. We still have best pure running back in league, Harvin, and now TE’s shancioe and rudolph. Our D is what lacks and we will address that. Majority of teams have their down years. Look at how hard Raiders fell off after SB. Titans were 13-3 two years ago. Cowboys were there. Eff everyone of the people who hate on the Vikes and their fans. Your team ain’t perfect so stop hating.
