"Teams can meet in person only with their own free agents"

"... teams can visit with their own free agents right now, but not with free agents who didn’t play for them in 2010."

"... teams do have the exclusive ability to meet with their own free agents face to face. If you’re trying to sign a free agent from another team, you can’t do it in person."

"So the only face-to-face meetings between free agents and NFL teams that can happen today and tomorrow are the ones involving free agents meeting with the teams that employed them in 2010."

Thanks for clearing that up, MDS.

For all the people who are calling this rule archaic:

It’s hard to wine and dine somebody over the phone. Nothing says, “We want you” like a $500 dinner of steak and lobster and overpriced spirits.

Nothing says we want you like:

"How does a 30 million dollar signing bonus sound, Nnamdi?"

"Come on out Friday, and we'll have steak and lobster and overpriced spirits while we hand you a giant check."

Ok, Ok, the offical response. But wait, the Rams claim that Q Mickal (Safety, Eagle 2010) has signed a four year deal with them. Maybe this was an over-zealous reporter writing a story, maybe it won;t be offical til Friday, but why isn;t every team doing the same thing. The Rams will not be disciplined, just told to wait til Friday. So again, why isn;t every team working out deals for players this early? The Giants tried and were told no, not yet, and the last team Plax played for was the Giants. Something about it doesn;t seem right.

That seems like kind of a dumb rule. What difference does it make weather it is over the phone or face to face?

Who makes these stupid rules?

It's 2011, not 1911. Most "meetings" take place on conference calls or skype or any number of online meeting services anyway.

Any "advantage" to being able to meet in person is extremely marginal at best.

The only thing a rule like that tells you is the age of the person who came up with it.
