Getty ImagesThe San Francisco 49ers are making a change at kicker.
Free agent kicker David Akers, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, has signed with the 49ers, reports Jeff McLane, the Eagles beat reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
And Joe Nedney, who has played for the 49ers the last six seasons, is on the way out, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Nedney was scheduled to make $1.87 million this season. There’s no word on the details of Akers’ contract.
Akers should be an upgrade for the 49ers: Although he missed two field goals in the Eagles’ playoff loss to the Packers, he had a typically excellent regular season in 2010.

Damn you David Akers! I wanted you to sign with my redskins because gram gano sucks
must be due to Nedneys injury and his poor kick offs…but Nedney is pretty darn reliable.
Akers is shaky when it counts…hmm
both good dudes too bad joe couldnt stay healthy
Yo had a great run with us Akers. Wish you well in San Francisco
well, that adds range to the niners.. Nedley is a good kicker but boy, anything above 45 yards was a sweat. I’m not sure how good Akers range is, but i’m sure its better than nedley’s

He fits right in with the rest of the team
Classy dude, don’t understand the move. I don’t hold the playoff misses against him, especially considering what he had on his mind. I think Akers will be missed by the fans. Good Luck!
As long as the The 49ers dont plan on having Akers kick a field goal 45 yards or longer they should be fine. He hasnt been able to consistently make a field goal that long in like 4 years.
Akers has been one of the most overrated players in the entire league the last few years imo. He use to be great and has been living off that for a while. I was so happy when the Eagles drafted Henery cuz I knew I wouldnt have to deal with everyone still in denial about how good Akers was. He would shank another 45 yarder and people would instantly start making excuses. I bet even now their will be dozens of my fellow Eagle fans on here saying what a huge mistake it was to let him go.
good for david always liked him but after that packers loss when he missed 2 field goals its time to go a different rout. lets see what the rookies got!
Kickoffs will be easier now. I think the injury may be bothering him more than is known. Nedney is pretty shaky past 45 yds too, so may be a partial factor
Bueno suerte David. Good guy, good kicker. He’ll be missed in the community. Niner fans, he will probably kick well for you, but as a person he is outstanding.
sorry ninersdynasty Akers is horrible 45+. He is probably still 1 of the better kickers at close range but boy is he bad from the 28 yard line and out.
didn’t Jeff Reed play on the 49ers? What happened to him?
Gonna miss ya Joe!
As a lifelong Eagles fan, I wish you good luck. You’ve probably won more games for us than any other kicker in Eagles history, even if the last game you played for us didn’t end well. Forever an Eagle.
god forbid a great kicker misses 2 field goals in a playoff game after learning his daughter had a malignant tumor
Nedney was pretty reliable at the ‘Stick, despite the difficult swirling winds. Thanks for the 6 years!
Hopefully Akers can handle the winds…
I thought Jeff Reed was the kicker for the 49ers. Whats the word on him then?
malonezo, dont make excuses. If it was that heavy on his mind then he shouldn’t have been out there!
Definitely wish your last game as an eagle was better cause everyone is gunna remember that and not the fact that you’ve scored the most points in eagles history. We had a great run with ya but nothing lasts forever. Good luck in SF.. now we gotta put our faith in a rookie, at least he’s the best kicker in college history tho so hopefully he can fill your shoes
No one cares. No one has cared about the niners since young retired.
………….kicker
Welcome to the swirling winds of the stick. Hope you can manage them like Joe did
Akers is a good kicker…unless it’s at the Meadowlands. Good upgrade for SF.
Eagles should bring in Shayne Graham right now.
Great kicker, great guy but not for longer FGs.
It’s been a tough few years to be a 49ers fan. And Joe Nedney has been just about the most reliable player on an otherwise crappy team.
Thanks for the good times, Joe!
the Kolb Era has come and gone. I’m excited for the Alex Henery era.
Babyface York: “Trent, the fans are getting restless. We haven’t done anything in free agency except let half our defense leave.”
Cousin Baalke: “I know, we’ll cut an old kicker and sign a different old kicker. That’ll show the league we mean business.”
Best of luck David. You will be missed here in Philly. You were always a class act.

I was wondering the exact same thing. The 9ers haven’t signed any of the proven free agents that they could have gotten for a pretty reasonable price. And, like you said, half the team has left. Geez, we better get Nnamdi or even Cromartie, or this will be one of the worst offseasons in our history! Not to mention Gore holding out and Crabtree out of camp yet again ( yeah, big surprise there huh?)
