Cardinals give up huge bounty to acquire Kolb

Getty Images

After a while, all of the “Kevin Kolb trade is close” reports started to remind us of the reports that said the “labor deal is close.”

Thankfully, this deal didn’t take as long to close.

Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports Kolb is headed to Arizona in exchange for a second-round pick and 2009 Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

That’s a ton to give up for an unproven quarterback, but the Cardinals were only getting started betting their future on Kolb. Caplan reports Kolb will sign a five-year, $63 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

(Kolb can head to Arizona now, but league rules indicate he can’t start practicing until the league year starts on August 4.)

The guaranteed money is less than Kolb was reportedly asking for, but still a lot for a quarterback with seven uneven career starts.  Houston made a similar deal for Matt Schaub which worked out, although they didn’t give up a solid young starting cornerback.

What a gamble. The move will define the rest of the Ken Whisenhunt/Rod Graves era in Arizona.

They were absolutely desperate for a quarterback solution in the desert, and they acted like it.

(And with that, I’ll cede the floor to Florio who is fired up and will be chiming in on the deal too.)

  1. hope that works out for him. Andy Reid is a beast when it comes to marketing and turning players out. Lucky for the Eagles.

  2. There is no possible way the Eagles will get a 2nd round pick and DRC. It just won’t happen. All you Eagles fans are crazy. Hahahahaha Kolb has more INTs than TDs. Hahahaha 7 career starts. Orton is sooo much better.

Oh wait, real NFL GMs actually think he is pretty good. Cards now favorites in the NFC West and may have a chance to keep Fitz after this year.

  3. “a second-round pick and 2009 Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

That’s a ton to give up for an unproven quarterback”

    Indeed it is.

Now…can the Birds please lock up a linebacker or two?

  4. Wow! That is a lot for kolb. Kolb has shown flashes that he can be a good qb. U will never know unless giving the chance. So now we gonna see.

  5. I still think this is a bad deal for Arizona unless Kolb turns out to win multiple SuperBowls for Arizona. DCR and a 2nd? eeesh…

  6. Potential costs a boat load i guess. Why didn’t they go after Orton for just a 3rd rounder? I guess time will tell, but all I can say is wow.

  7. Kolb is not going to be a Top 15 QB; Cardinals gave up to much to get him and paid him to much in Guaranteed money.

If this defines Whisenhut & Graves then they won’t be around much longer.

They should have taken a QB in the draft!

  8. Didn’t you say yesterday that the Eagles lost leverage and the deal wouldn’t get done if it didn’t get done earlier this week?

    I’m confused.

Kolb will be a very good qb in Az. Here’s hoping DRC can get his head on straight! 2nd rounder is a great addition to the deal, like a nice frosting on a cake!

Now, I hope the Eagles can go find a LB!

  9. i guess i should get rid of my kolb jersey..the eagles are no dought the winners of this trade. bar none. kolb was not worth this much. now the eagles have two pro bowl defensive ends and two pro bowl corner backs. now if we can get a linebacker ( tulloch hopefull) and we’ll be ready to roll!

  10. I have a feeling the Whis is going to lose his job over this one….Eagles just robbed them!!

  11. As an Eagles fan I’m thrilled. We’ve added two pro-bowl players today. Now if only we could address the linebacker situation..

  12. Man, Philly just got a great CB and a 2nd rd pick for a QB who will not be in the NFL in 2013…And who probably wont even start after week 8 because of how bad he is.

  13. The desert heat must be the reason. Now what? Hire somebody to teach Kolb how to be a QB?

  14. Hallelujah, what an awesome trade!!!

Cardinal fans…… I’m very, very sorry. This feels like kicking someone when they’re already down

  15. This is a terrible move for the Cards, and a steal for the Eagles. Kolb will prove that he can not live up to the hype, and DRC will add a ton to that Philly Defense.

Congrats Philly, you guys fleeced the Cards on this one.

    -TigerReport

  16. As a 49er fan I think the Cardinals got fleeced big time. DRC and Petersen would be trouble, but hey they needed a QB. I just think they paid steep, for a guy who has subpar stats considering he played for the Eagles. But only time will tell. Hope it backfires, and I honestly think it will.

  17. it’s about flippin’ time.

now, hopefully fat andy and howie can land us s.tulloch to help complete the mini-makeover of the D and we can actually get down to business.

    go birds.

  18. 20 million was less than he was expecting? Are you kidding me????? Good luck in the desert with the greedy unproven Qb.

    Is it a 2012 2nd rounder?

  19. You think old Mike Brown could have got this or more for Carson Palmer? Well even if he got close to this range, he would be doing justice to his team and his fanbase.
    But noooooooo not you……………
Could have rebuilt the Bungles, but you are not going to “reward” a player.
How about rewarding your team with a deal like this one.

  20. “The guaranteed money is less than Kolb was reportedly asking for”

Woop Woop Woop!!! Red Lights!!!! bells!!!! Whistles!!!

  21. That is a lot to give up. But considering the Cards’ quarterback situation — they didn’t HAVE a quarterback — it had to be done. They may have gotten away with giving up less for Kolb had they not acted so desperate, but in the end, they had to do what was necessary.

  22. Asante Samuel and DRC opposite of each other? Should have good results with that tandem. I’m anxious to see what the Eagles do with the remaining money now that they have DRC and Babin… Linebacker? Please?

  23. good job by andy and the front office. hope the prudent spending (babin) and deft assessment of the big picture continues. would love to see one of the displaced veteran safeties (not if its blaine bishop 2 however) land here to bring up the young talent and provide depth in the secondary. and i expect they have an announcement for a linebacker coming as well.

  24. what has Kevin Kolb ever done to impress anyone? Their acting like he’s the second coming of Steve Young. DRC to the Eagles, Breaston to the Chiefs and now a QB who may be worse then other QB’s you had on the roster last year.

At least things will seem back to normal as the Cardinals will be holding down the basement of the NFC West for years to come… and that’s saying something

  25. I don’t know why this is a huge surprise. The rumor all along was DRC and a second. Now that it’s happened exactly the way it was rumored to it’s a huge deal?

I wish Kolb the best. I hope he makes the eagles regret trading him.

  26. What do you mean define the Rod Graves era? He has had that team mired well below mediocrity since he’s been there. One run to the Super Bowl shouldn’t pad his resume.

  27. If they don’t go to the playoffs this year, Wiz is gone. I love the Cards getting Kolb but that’s a ton to give up and pay for a guy that started 7 games. 3 with a QB rating below 60 and 3 with a rating about 90.

  28. WOW!

Let me get this straight…DRC, a 2nd and 20 mil guaranteed for a guy who’s started 7 games?

Ding-Ding PFT, we’ve just found a new GM to pick on!

  29. Finally the birds can move on from this story. In the end we got a 2nd round pick and a former 1st round pick in exchange for drafting kolb in the 2nd round and developing him. Good luck to him in Arizona…hope he does well. As for the eagles, this will really help the secondary. The line got a push earlier with babin, so this is a good day.

  30. Eagles came out on top in this deal. I can’t believe he went for that much AND ontop of that, he gets a ridiculous contract. All that for a guy who’s started 7 games. A.J. Feeley anyone?

  31. Huge price to pay.
The one caveat is that Kolb looked terrific in his final game of the year last season; Philly’s win over ATL. He’s got potential for certain but so does every other young QB.

  32. It’s a good move all-around.

the Cards have Greg Toler, ready to play.
their QB problem is solved for now.

the Eagles get the CB they need.

    the money means nothing ..
it has to be spent somewhere, and that’s the going rate for starting QB’s.

good deal for everyone ..and it’s over.

  33. I am so happy for my Eagles because Kolb has more picks than interceptions and he is a 3-4 career backup. Kolb will be a bust for the Cardinals. They will regret this.

  34. that is a huge price to pay, I hope for their sake he works out. Amazing considering New England only got a 2nd round pick for Cassell and he had more experience.

  35. “Houston made a similar deal for Matt Schaub which worked out, although they didn’t give up a solid young starting cornerback.”

They have another one who is better and needed a QB more. Better than drafting Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert IMO.

  36. This is why the eagles are always a top 5 team since andy reid joined. Thanks racistskins for nate allen and we are coming for plax and or Uymeurine next. eliisapunkbitch. HAHA

  37. from the Eagles . .

    @EaglesInsider
    Eagles Insider

    Brandon Graham and Winston Justice
    placed on PUP list.

Asante Samuel and Jeremy Maclin excused from practice for personal reasons.

  38. its hard to tell who got the better end of this deal. it might seem like the eagles hand down but a lot of it has to do with how good kolb will be given the starting job. we can decide this about 2 yrs from now who got the better deal.

  39. Well, this sets a lousy market for the Dolphins to trade for Orton. Denver will probably demand a 2nd rounder now.

Not that I particularly mind not getting him, but still…

  40. i realize its a few years later and deals have only gotten bigger in the meantime — but its essentially the same amount of money for 5 years that Aaron Rodgers got for 6 years with his extension in 2008.

    for kevin kolb.

    yeah, that kevin kolb.

  41. I think I just hallucinated for a second. I thought you said they gave up DRC, a 2nd round pick, and $63 million for Kevin “Don’t Put Me in Coach” Kolb.

  42. Matt Cassel played an entire season, and brought Mike Vrabel with him, for the #33 pick in the draft. Kolb has only started a few games, and the Eagles get a starting CB PLUS a second round pick? Kolb needs to become a top ten QB for this to work.

  43. This could easily shape the history of the Cardinals franchise forever. Seriously if Kolb fails deliever you’ll not only have a bad QB you’ll lose Fitz, lose out good FA because you’ll be a bad team again and etc. IF kolb succeeds you could be stealing the pathetic NFC West for years. But since it’s the Cardz, Kolb will suck, Fitz will leave and DRC will be greater then Dieon Sanders!

  44. Way too much for Kolb…. not saying he won’t work well in AZ, but that is a lot of scratch for a 3-4 QB. I still don’t understand how this guy is more valued than Orton. Good luck AZ!

  45. I think what Philly did to Arizona with this deal would be considered illegal in many Southern states…

hahaha. i couldnt have said it better

  47. I wouldn’t trade a second round pick OR DRC for Kolb… not even Philly could make that QB look good. He must have a hell of an agent

  48. The Eagles may be incapable of winning titles but they sure can fleece a team for an unproven (or useless) QB – my squad included. Good for them. My prediction is Kolb will be OK but not great and this will be a waste of money and time for them. Meanwhile, the Eagles will go 8-8 this season because a) Vick is not that good and b) half the season will be played with Kafka at QB.

    …………………………………………………………………………………..

Dude that division sucks so bad I honestly believe any college football team would be the team to beat in that division!

  50. As a 49ers fan, I’m loving this. Not just the scalping, but also the fact I have strong doubts Kolb will pan out.

  51. madamschefter says: Jul 28, 2011 3:17 PM

The Cardinals just became the team to beat in the NFC West.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yeah because they were SO dominant with HOF QB Warner at the helm. Not to mention their talent keeps leaving. SMH…… I put the rams as the favorite still and I’m a niners fan. Seattle has no QB at all to look forward to. SF doesn’t have enough time to get new philosophies rolling in all phases of the game, and AZ keeps losing talent plus Kolb will be a flop anyway. So STL it will be, write it down.

  52. Good luck Kolb! Congrats to the Cards fans. You got yourself a good quarterback. I’ll be rooting for Kolb and my new “second favorite” team!

  53. In a zoological sense, this is a big mistake for Kolb.

He’s going from being an Eagle (a large, aggressive raptor) to a Cardinal (a cute, harmless, little songbird).

This will result in reduced testosterone and losses for the Arizona team.

  54. Love all the Eagles fans ripping Az for overpaying, and yet the Eagles just signed a guy to a very nice contract who had 1 good year, and a guy they just dumped the year before. Hmmm

  55. Nice move for both teams. DRC better get under Asantes wing and get in that film room! He has the athletic ability, now lets get that hard work ethic going. Rather have Nnamdi, but I didnt expect him to come to Philly after the Babin signing. I still expect one or 2 more moves by the Eagles. LB and Im hoping for a right tackle to come our way via FA or trade.

  56. yea…yea…yea…another genius move by Andy Reid. He has been fleecing guys for a decade….which of course has resulted in how many Lombardi Trophies???

  57. That can’t be right?? A 2nd round pick AND a pro bowl CB?!?!

larceny, steal, swindle, robbery, rip off, burglary, fleeced, thievery, etc. HAHAHA!

  58. The Cards stunk to high heaven of desperation, and the Eagles took advantage. Too bad the Cards will still be at the bottom of the NFC Worst at the end of the season. Kolb solves nothing.

  59. I think this move instantly makes the Cards the frontrunners to win the NFC West. I think Kolb will have a pretty solid season for the Cards.

    ———————————–

    You’re a moron.

  61. “That’s a ton to give up for an unproven quarterback”

Ya cause the alternative was so much better, I mean they had a QB on the team from Fordham for god sakes. If any team in the division last year could have won 8 games they were in the playoffs I mean come on.

  62. Kevin Kolb ripped the Niners apart last year, so I hope the niners can counter that trade and sign a great-good CB !!

  63. Wooow huuge risk for a guy thats unproven. A guy that has Only started 7 games, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, 60% completion ratio all in his career. Not very smart not at that price.

  64. Wow, this is crazy. Whoever approved this deal for the cards will be fired halfway into the season

  65. wow….as an Eagles fan, I thought Kolb has potential to be pretty good but he’s not the kind of guy who can carry a team all by himself. AZ better beef up its OL big time.

as for the Eagles….they got a great deal.

  66. Brett Favre had done a lot less when the Packers coughed up for him. At the time, EVERYONE thought the Falcons fleeced the Packers.

Eagles with a nice set of corners…Samuel and DRC. Not bad.

  67. Great trade for both teams. Cards getting classy guy with football knowledge and skills way beyond credit he gets. Birds get pro bowl youn corner at needed position and fiture two. Well done both teams.

  68. Everyone involved in this trade from the Cardinals organization just assured each of themselves a spot in the unemployment line very soon. What a disaster. Terrible, terrible decision. Even though the Eagles absolutely fleeced the Cardinals on this one, it still won’t be enough to get them to the big one. Vick will come back to earth this season (the second half last year proves it – most notably in their final five or six games), and the defense will continue to struggle. DRC was an absolute steal, but their DL interior, LB’s and safeties are dreadful. Add to that Li’l DeShawn having a fit over his contract, and you see that all is really not well in Philly.

  69. djax10isthebomb says:

YES!!! The Eagles pulled off another robbery. I love this franchise!

    ___
And all of those “robberies” paid off in multiple Super Bowls. Oh wait…

  70. This works for both teams. It wasn’t two years ago when the Eagles were trying to get Kolb to start over McNabb, now they’re acting like they never wanted the guy! If you didn’t get Vick last year, guess who’d be starting for the Eagles? At the end of the day the Cards got a solid qb who’ll get to feed Fitz the ball td after td. DRC is a good player, but his work ethic lacked last couple years, and he can’t make openfield tackles. I’ve watched him from the get go. Eagle fans will find out when Hicks and Austin burn him. The only way to find out if this trade is lopsided is 6 weeks into the season and even then it could be up in the air. Know this, Fitzgerald is the best reciever in the NFL, and when he gets going with Kolb, everybody will say the trade was even.

  71. Thank God Al Davis run the clown they have as a Head Coach in AZ off after interviewing him, the Dude is SLOW. Kolb?, no wonder the WR left, and giving up the Corner for him, it is a joke.

Al Davis makes these clowns look pure amateurs, way to go Philly, you guys are GOOD, love the slide of hand.

  72. I never thought I’de say this but well done Joe Banner! Kolb could turn out to be a decent QB but Rogers-Cromartie fills a huge hole in our defense and a 2nd round pick is very valuable.

  73. HELL YEAH! Now the Broncos have no leverage to keep Orton.. Come on down to Miami Kyle! This trade benifits the dolphins as much as it does the eagles.

  74. Hahahaha, you Eagles fans are killing it today.

Eagles fans Sept 2010: Glad we got rid of McNabb, fleeced the Skins, Kolb is going to be the next Tom Brady!

Eagles fans July 2011: Glad we got rid of Kolb, what a useless QB, will be out of the league within 3 years!

Classic! The dude didnt even play 1 whole season, and didnt look that bad when he did play. Even Peyton “Future Holder of all NFL Passing Records” Manning was ordinary his rookie season, sometimes he looked awful. A little too soon for you guys to be writing off Kolb

  75. “Huge price to pay.
The one caveat is that Kolb looked terrific in his final game of the year last season; Philly’s win over ATL. He’s got potential for certain but so does every other young QB.”

Kolb played two more games after that one last season:

Vs TEN – 2 INTs, 56.9 QB rating, Eagles Lose
Vs DAL – 3 INTs, 1 lost FUM, 37.0 QB rating, Eagles Lose

    See ya Kevin lol

  76. They were absolutely desperate for a quarterback solution in the desert, and they acted like it.

I think you mean the D-E-S-S-E-R-T. At least act like you’re real journalists.

  77. If Cassel can get a contract like that, why not Kolb. Just the ugly side of supply-and-demand economics rearing it’s head.

  78. While this deal is indeed a ripoff it wont seem quite so grand when Kafka is starting after Vick goes on IR.

    G’luck Kolb, you’ll need it..

  79. Pretty even deal to me…Cards have Patrick Peterson, who is going to be much better than DRC ever will be (overrated). With that said, Kolb has always stepped up to the task when asked to in Philly, I dont think he is really unproven.

Cards are instantly gonna compete this year, especially in the NFC West where my flag football team might be able to win the division…

  80. I’m a really big fan of Kolb, dating to his college days. He sees the field well, has a good release. Kolb is able to see the different planes of the field and attack the different planes. It’s a gamble, but I like the gamble on their part. I think the Cardinals overpaid a bit (I was thinking DRC and a 3rd rounder), but if you believe a guy is a franchise QB, this is a move you make.

The one big issue is that Arizona’s OL isn’t exactly great, and they have to commit to running the ball to protect Kolb. With the loss of Breaston, the skill positions are more uncertain than before. It’s imperative for the coaching staff to run the ball and develop their skill guys through the course of the season.

Anyone else find it funny that last year, all the Eagle fans had a bunch of names like “Kolb4MVP”, “KingKolb” and “CaptKolb” or some dumb names….just sayin’

  83. I can see the headlines in the Philly papers. “Reid fleeces another team, offloading Kolb.” while the Arizona papers will Reid, ” Shish Kolbobbed.” Reid is one of the best at getting it all from you and getting rid of you. The Cards got jacked on this deal!

So, Reid and Co. have managed to move Feeley, McNabb, and now Kolb for a slew of draft picks and a pro-bowl corner. Credit where credit is due.

    ____
No offense, Eagles fans, but this “slew of picks” hasn’t resulted in any more payoff, Super Bowl-wise, than the Cards have accomplished so far.

  86. eek given all of the talent coach wiz has given up the past, few seasons(esp on defense) he is really playing a hand where hes all in with him and az’s future goin with kolb. hes riding on the risk reward line. for his sake kolb better pan out. im no gm or hc so im not one to knock anyones decision, but from what I see andy reid got over like a car salesman who sold a 5000 car to a desperate college student with bad credit for 15000 bucks with a high interest rate. idk, goin after orton and using that cash (plus the 2nd rnd pick) to fill holes would seem more logical, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures

  87. Wow!! i am an Eagles fan and I just don’t get it. I am wondering who the Eagle’s #2 QB will be? Good thing the Eagles management said they would be aggressive in acquisitions. So far they have done 0 acquiring anyone. Same crap every year. This is just getting annoying. By the way Coach Andy Reid, way to go i the press conference yesterday. Way to win the media and fans over. You have to be kidding me. I guess he just wanted to get to the dinner table before anyone else. Another frustrating year ahead!

  88. jesus…. Eagles fans really ARE as dumb as they look.

    1. DRC was a pro bowler the year they tried to squeeze the pro bowl between the conference championship and super bowl. He got on that pro bowl because half the players had already bowed out.

    2. If you think that Kevin Kolb has the same talent makeup then you are certifiably retarded.

    3. Cards gave up alot but they needed a young qb to fit their system now and Kolb fit that bill perfectly. Philly will botch the 2nd round pick on some lineman out of the Pac ten and DRC will be getting beat by most wideouts like he always does.

Enjoy Kafka— thats real settling knowing he’s back there. LOL

  89. Wow…seven NFL starts equals three wins and four loses. Anyway, I hope the best for Kolb and I hope this solves some problems for the Cardinals.
Meanwhile it looks like Miami is offering a fifth rounder for Orton. Was there that big of gap between Kolb and Orton?

  90. Damn!!!! As an Eagles fan I really did not want to see Kolb traded. With Vicks style of play he is bound to get hurt. Plus I saw him regressing late in the season last year.

Yes we got a good CB for him but now we have to find a vet to back up Vick. Who would you suggest?

Good luck to Kevin. Hope you light em up!!!!

  91. Im an eagle, die hard! I firmly believe Kolb can get Arizona to the playoffs, but that’s about it. Just think kola benefited a lil from having a lot of weapons in Philly. In Az all there is, is Fitzgerald. Let’s see how is read and recognition is. Plus they play in a horrible division.

  92. dukesanuch says:

I always thought AJ Feely should get a second chance

He did with the Panthers 2 years ago

  93. I never understood why people think Kolb will be a great franchise QB if he could never beat out McNabb or Vick for the starting job. McNabb was declining and Vick, although good, is still probably the 5-10th best QB in the NFL which should put Kolb below that.

Should have just went for Orton and kept the CB!

  94. Andy can steal deals all day long because he can’t even buy a championship. How many years have we been hearing this is the Eagles year????? The cards are a few players short of a good football team. One of them was at quarterback. Will Kolb be the answer…only time will tell….But I wont fault them for committing to Kolb. If you aren’t gambling in this league…you arent winning.

  95. dansnydersux- Unless of course you mean that the Cards were hoping to find a QB solution in a clever fortune cookie hint.

  96. Andy Reid studied the Green Bay way of grooming a QB then trading him for a lot… sometimes it works (Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck) and sometimes it doesn’t (Aaron Brooks, AJ Feeley). In two years it will Mike Kafka’s turn, unless he winds up as the starter.

It was a decent deal for Arizona. They drafted DRC’s replacement in the first round this year, and needed both a decent QB and to keep their franchise player, Larry Fitzgerald, happy — it appears they accomplished both. Now they need to get settled along their offensive line, and they’ll be OK.

  97. all the “hype” that is being complained about is simply the fact that Kolb was the most attractive QB available considering the potential he has. so of course the media is going to talk about him until they are blue in the face. i haven’t heard anybody rant and rave about how good he is. i watched every game he played in and he showed some flashes of possibly becoming a great QB and also showed flashes of absolute horror. i’d say AZ has a chance of coming out great in this deal. they also may have been raped. but trading for Kolb is safer than if they were to draft just about anyone in the 1st round.

with that being said, as an Eagles fan, I am happy with the deal and wish Kolb and AZ all the best, as long as they are not playing us….and i hope the Eagles don’t use that 2nd rd pick to reach for someone that they could have picked in the 4th.

  98. You Philly fans that think you robbed the Cardinals…most Philly fans in the stands are tougher and can tackle better than DRC…you’ll be booing him by October.

  99. “Houston made a similar deal for Matt Schaub which worked out, although they didn’t give up a solid young starting cornerback.”

If you call missing the playoffs every year “worked out” then you must have really really lowered your standards. Hey, i guess Jamarcus worked out too, Al should not have dumped him. All that money for 2 guys that couldn’t beat out Mike Vick. LOLOLOLOLOL. Fitz will be asking for a trade.

They still have Patrick Petersen over there, and oh by the way who is gonna throw the ball to those guys to begin with?

  103. WOO HOO!!!! Finally a corner to pair up with the great Asante Samuel!!!! This roster is starting to shape up nicely. Now sign D-Jax, can’t have him missing camp, he’s no Revis that can just show up and be okay…

We just robbed the Cardinals!!! Can’t wait to play them!

    E.A.G.L.E.S. EAGLES!!!!!

  104. The Kolb/Orton comparisons really aren’t worth anything. Orton has been starting for years. Kolb has 7 starts. Everyone knows what Orton is (and he’s pretty good), but nobody knows Kolb’s ceiling yet. Yeah, Orton would have cost less, but you know for a fact he’s never going to be elite. Kolb might be.

  105. As an Eagles fan, I’m very happy with our end of the swap. That being said, it continues to amaze me how everybody posting on this board seems to be an expert on Kolb’s upside. Six games is not enough to give you a definitive answer on if this guy is going to be a franchise QB or not. None of you bozos have any idea what Kolb’s ceiling is, so stop acting like it.

  106. This will mark the beginning of the end of the Whisenhunt/Graves era in Arizona. They’re betting the farm on Kolb and there’s an excellent chance that they’re going to be severely disappointed with their return on investment.

“Kevin Kolb = ONLY qb in nfl history to throw for 300+ yds in his 1st 2 starts. Not Manning. Not Montana. Kolb is the only one.”

    Kolb’s 4th year: 7 TDs 7 INTs 76.1
    Rodgers’ 4th year: 28TDs 13 INTs 93.8

  108. Uff – appears the Cardinals are heading back to ugly trades/drafts and lousy teams. The good news – at least tickets will be easy to come by out here when a decent team comes to play!!!

  109. I would love to say great deal for the Eagles but Idk if I’m gunna still be thinkin that when Kolb and the Cardinals end up knocking the Eagles out of the playoffs. Both teams got what they needed so id say it was a win win, great deal

  110. I think the contract is a bigger gamble than losing Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round pick.

Time will tell who wins this one, but for as much hype as Kolb has received, he’s about as proven a QB as Rob Johnson was when he signed on with Buffalo in the late 1990s after very limited starting experience. We all know how that worked out.

I hope things go better for Kolb, but this is a bigger reach than the Vikings picking Ponder at #12 in last spring’s draft.

  111. I cant see where people can claim that Kevin Kolb will be a bust. I am not a AZ fan, but this guy had no chance to show what he can do and had no consistancy at all in Philly. The Philadelphia Eagles were lost last season at QB and on offense in the preseason. Kolb has a live arm and many scouts love him to lead a team in a consistant system where WRs can work with him. He has that in Fitzgerald now, who is a top 2 talent at the WR position and we have seen what big WR can do for QBs(Moss/Culpepper).

The Cardinals have been to a SB more recently than Philly so Kolb isnt in a terrible spot here.

  112. Yo Arizona getcha popcorn ready! For check down passing and fly balls… at least Fitz should be able to get up for some of em.. Andy now its time to stop the run or plan on having teams play from behind all season. Go Eagles! Bring Back Dawk!

  113. soo happy my dolphins didnt do this…i dont care what people think about kolb…drc is wayyy more valuable..but who knows i may be wrong

  114. the Cardinals just got trade raped! Rogers-Cromartie and a second round pick for Lion. What is this Madden? Kolb is going to be a bust and the cardinals gave up what I consider to be the 3rd best corner in the league and s socond rounded for an unproven QB. Everyone will get to see Rodgers-Cromartie shine now that he isn’t in the NFC west and will be taking on the likes of Jackson and Austin.

  115. At least Kolb will now have a head coach who can handle time outs, challenges, and two-minute drills.

Eagle fans right now have a ridiculous amount of confidence in Vick – just like they had in Kolb last year. Don’t forget, Vick favred his team out of the playoffs last season.

  116. “Kolb will sign a five-year, $63 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.”

    Whew! Cha-ching!

That is a lot of scratch. Dude’s gonna be rolling in it. I think it’s a perfect fit, though. And I think he will be a good quarterback for them. He’ll undoubtedly start in week one; someone to think about picking up in the later rounds of your fantasy drafts, just in case dude starts going off.

  117. DRC a Pro bowl DB in 2009 yes, a MAJOR head case ! which is never reported, takes plays off, forgets coverage’s, makes Dion Sanders look like a stud when it comes to tackling. You will see Philly fans great speed but takes too many chances and this “Cards Fan” has no problem trading DRC for a potential franchise QB.

    Reaction !!!

Not sure why you would refer to something statistical factual that happened in 2009 as nostalga.
Rodgers is a fine qb and appears to be on his way to an excellent career. All qb develop differently and are given different oppurtunities. My point is that so many people are negative about Kolb, but nobody knows for sure how his career will go. He has shown flashes of great potential.

If the Packers were offered this same compensation for Rodgers back in 2007, I think many people would have thought the Packers were getting too much for an unproven qb. Seems to me that most people didn’t expect him to play at the level that Favre did.

HELLO, he played for the CARDINALS! I’d take a play or 5 off too if I played for that godforesaken org!!!!!

    WELCOME TO PHILLY DOMINIQUE!!!!!!
    PLAY LIKE YOU KNOW HOW!~

  120. I’m going to play devil’s advocate and say it was a good trade for the Cardinals (though even better for the Eagles).

This is a QB-driven league, and the QB position is worth much more than the CB. The Cards have been desperate for a QB ever since Warner retired for dancing. Kolb has proven he can play in games much more than an unproven rookie out of college. That’s worth a lot to the QB and to the teams. Every single offensive play goes through the QB. A shutdown CB is very valuable in a pass-happy conference, but a QB who can play is worth much much more.

  121. Seems steep but to say Kolb will definitely be a bust is silly.

I’m sure all these people saying Kolb will be a huge bust and the Cardinlas are doomed are the same people who were throwing tings at the TV on draft day when their team didn’t pick Brady in the first round(or second or third….).

  122. This is why the Cardinals are the Cardinals, and why Arizona belongs to the Dallas Cowboys.

  123. Alot was given up for Mike Vick’s last backup too…..how did that work out?

    ———————————————————–

Schaub? Well the Texans have never made the playoffs and Schaub has a 25-31 record as a starter, so…

But I dunno, maybe that looks pretty good from an Eagles fan’s point of view haha

  124. One season does not make a QB. There’s potential with Kolb. For Arizona’s sake, I hope they’ve done their homework. It’s still a gamble, but any more of a gamble than re-signing Derek Anderson?

  125. A team without a QB made a deal to get a QB. At least it shows the Cardinals aren’t just mailing it in. Without Kolb they probably would have had a fifteen percent chance of winning the sorry west, with him it’s probably up to thirty, thirty five percent.

  126. So in reality, the actual hit against the salary cap of Fitz’s contract when he signs will be whatever he gets per year plus 15%-20% of Kolb’s salary?

    Desperation is a stinky cologne.

  127. YOU’RE KILLING ME SMALLS, YOU’RE KILLING ME!!!!!!!

I’m now the front office didn’t prepare for life after Warner, but taking a solid building block from the defense and replacing it with an unproven piece. This has to be the worst front office since the Matt Millen era in Detroit.

The the game of football is played like chess, not checkers!

Cardinals just made a checkers move.

Too bad the Eagles are playing chess.

  128. Hshahahahaha. Good job Philly. Nice fleece job, DRC and a 2 for a guy that was never going to play in Philly. Go birds!

  129. The best part about this thread?

Cowboys, Giants and LOLskins fans going

“Oh yeaaah, Andy Reid is such a genius look at his trophy case!”

As if any of your coaches, save Coughlin, earned a trophy for your teams, or as if any of your teams has been able to do with backup-quality QBs on the trade market what Reid has with his.

Give credit where it’s due. This is one hell of a trade for the Eagles. Jealousy is an ugly color, boys.

  130. Also, all armchair coaches in this threat must officially log in and apologize when Kevin Kolb’s Cardinals wins the NFC West.

Oh wait, none of you will do that. You’ll just continue spouting idiocies and pretending like you’d last a day running a pro team.

    Kyle Orton!? Seriously!?

  131. steveelliott2158 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:02 PM

You Philly fans that think you robbed the Cardinals…most Philly fans in the stands are tougher and can tackle better than DRC…you’ll be booing him by October.

    ——————

Don’t sell Philly fans short. We’re Philadelphia sports fans. No matter how he plays, we’ll be booing him in September!

  132. baddegg says: Jul 28, 2011 5:09 PM

Who does Philly have if Vick goes down with injury at some point this season?

    ———————

What does NE have if Brady goes down?

What does INDY have if Manning goes down?

    Chargers/Rivers?

    GreenBay/Rogers?

Not the greatest argument. If any team loses their starter, the backup generally isn’t going to be as good.

Birds are gonna pick up Vince Young super-cheap, and revitalize his career like Vick. Then, they’ll probably trade him for a first round pick or pro bowl player at whatever position they need. That’s what Andy Reid does!

  133. and whisenhunt still doesnt understand why tomlin and not himself was offered the head coaching job with the steelers. what an idiot desperation will get u nowhere fast, but it always does help to have a plan and the cardinals have shown to be almost as inept as Al Davis and the raiders.

  134. Kevin Kolb, I mean I knew he was going to AZ but not a 5 time pro-bowler, 1 sb ring type salary. Whattta joke.

  135. Bidwell and Graves should have pushed for a better deal!
I’ll have to take a wait and see what happens approach before I can buy season tickets for the Cardinals.
This the worst trade they could have made!!!!!!!!
The pressure is all on Kolb’s shoulders.
Now the Cardinals have another hole in the defense, when are they going to learn how to build a team.

  136. You Philly fans have been punked! DRC couldn’t tackle a syphilitic, homeless crackhead. After the knee surgery (oh, no ones even talking about that!), he’s not even taking risks anymore. Oh, he added 10 lbs, and now weighs 195! Samuels and DRC, the worst tackling DBs in the NFL! Watch how team turn the corner on your ass! 🙂
You guys might as well put pillows on your backs as much as your defense will be laying down and spreading them! 🙂

  137. Kevin Kolb: 3-4 record

    3893 yds
    14 TDs
    20 INTs
    57.1% Comp
    6.5 YPA

Why did the Cardinals cut Leinart and then trade DRC and a second rounder to get get him back?

  139. I can’t believe they’d pay this guy that much money. I say that Philly will end up with the better end of this deal.

  140. It works in nature too: eagles tend to get the better of cardinals in most of their interactions as well.

  141. From what I have gathered, this is going to happen every couple of seasons. There will be a 2nd string QB that looks like he could be a steady starter. It happened to Schaub and Cassel.

They were traded for, the new team gave them a contract that would be comparable to a franchise QB. Those QBs where able to showcase what they had during a long injuries to number 1 starters, unlike Kolb.

Unfortunetly, I don’t see much of either the Chiefs or Texans, I do know Cassel helped his team to the playoffs, and that the Texan haven’t been able to make them. I don’t know which outcome the Cards will come up with, but if the Eagles REALLY thought that Kolb was a franchise QB woudln’t they have hung on to him with an aging Vick.

  142. here is the bottom line. KOLB for a second round pick would have been plenty. Im a life long Eagles fan and basically The Eagles got a first and second round pick for Kolb. Plus DRC is proven first round pick. The Birds burned em.

  143. Yes looks like a one-sided trade but if/when Mike Vick gets hurt maybe the trade won’t look so great. If….if Kolb plays well and is a quality starter the trade is absolutely worth it for the Cardinals. Without a decent QB the Cards had no chance at retaining Larry FITZ. I loved DRC but he had a down year last season. When he is on he is a playmaker. When he is off he is terrible. Wait until the season plays out people might have a different opinion on the trade.

Nah…. they gave up too much! LOL
