Darrelle Revis: Nnamdi Asomugha and I would be unbelievable

2011 AFC Championship: New York Jets v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

Darelle Revis wants Nnamdi Asomugha as a teammate.

Revis, the Jets cornerback who has been proclaimed the best player in the NFL by coach Rex Ryan, says he thinks Asomugha is an even better cornerback — and he hopes the Jets sign Asomugha and make Revis the No. 2 cornerback on the team.

“He’s the best cornerback in the league,” Revis said. “Me and him as a tandem would be unbelievable. It’d be awesome, so I would love to have him as a teammate.”

Revis declined to answer when asked if he would restructure his own contract so that the Jets could do a deal with Asomugha. But he said it wouldn’t bother him at all if he’s no longer the highest-paid cornerback on the team.

“That’s Nnamdi’s situation,” Revis said. “Money is not the issue here. The issue here with us, is just trying to build a championship-caliber team. . . . I’m not angry at what anybody gets. . . . Nnamdi is deserving of getting the top dollars, which he has to do. My thing is, I hope we get him.”

Revis is right: As great as the Jets’ defense already was, this is a signing that would make the Jets’ defense unbelievable.

I hope they do get him… tie up a quarter of their cap space on 2 players at the same position. He wont be as good as he was if he’s gonna be spending his time trying to act. Plus, as long as Sanchez is in there, they wont be making it to the SB

Revis restructure his contract to help attract more talent to the team? That ain’t happening. Revis is interested in one thing and one thing only. Revis.

Too bad the front 7 is garbage outside of David Harris. If the Jets were smart they would use that “10 million” on Ray Edwards or someone else who can get to the QB.

In general, it isn’t wise to spend so much on one position, particularly not a year after drafting a first round CB to develop. There are some contracts they can cut in the next few years, though, so if they are creative about it, and draft well, it could work out.

What should be said is this – the reason the Jets have been successful, defensively, in recent years, is because Revis allowed them to be creative with their pass rush. Otherwise, their pass rush talent is quite mediocre. Adding Asomugha, along with spending draft picks on addressing the DL, could give Rex Ryan a lot more flexibiity. I can’t think of an elite edge rusher available in FA, so if they want to go all-in, then the move for Asomugha makes the most sense out of the options available to them this summer.

That said, I feel like, with Woody’s retirement, they’d be better off focusing on addressing some more OL depth. Off the top, the battle for RT is what, Wayne Hunter and Vladimir Ducasse? Ducasse has some physical potential, and Hunter’s passable, but it’s not exactly a tandem that would make me feel comfortable. Furthermore, their offensive success is predicated on establishing the run to allow Sanchez some openings in the passing game.

Before another one of you idiots make another “now they need a quarterback” comment why don’t you look at sanchez’s playoff stats. 4-2 record with 60% comp, 1155 yards, 9 td’s, 3 ints and a qb rating of 94.

I don’t know about any body else out there but with a defense like the Jets have, ill take that out of my third year qb any day. And if you want to compare him to other young qb’s playoff stats…take a peak flacco’s or Matt ryans.

  11. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 28, 2011 7:37 AM

If this happened, team’s would have to do 2 things because your WR’s would be locked down. 1. Run the Ball 2. Use your TE’s ALOT

  14. RK says: Jul 28, 2011 7:43 AM

As long as they keep thinking they’re unbelievable and playing with the assumption that they’ll win because of how unbelievable they are, they won’t win it all. Unbelievable arrogance leads to believable complacency.

Really? Their front seven is garbage huh?? So Devito, Ellis, Pouha, and Scott are garbage? Ok bro! Your a fool and you wish the dolphins could make moves like the jets. Why the hell would they go after Edwards and waste money when they drafted two dline men and they have devito and pouha signed and the have pitoitua comimg back of injury who they really like. Stick to your dolphins you guys have plenty of your own problems.

What are you talking about. There is a salary cap in football there is no cap in baseball. Everyone is under the same rules. The jets dont have way more money to spend than anyone else like the yankees do in baseball. They arent offering more money to nnamdi than anyone else. If they get nnamdi its because they work the cap smart or because nnamdi will take less money to go there. Dont be mad cause hes not going to the eagles. It will be the jets 49ers or texans

With Nnamdi, that let’s Rex get even more creative with pressures. No matter who are front seven are. Mr. T and Woody. Get it done.

  37. jcjets says: Jul 28, 2011 8:58 AM

Its almost not worth reading the comments on articles about the jets. So many haters!

First of all, the Jets did a very good job of stopping the run last year. And they added two big defensive tackles through the draft.

Second, when a team asks a player to “restructure” his contract, it doesn’t mean he’s taking a pay cut. They move the money around to try and lower the player’s cap value. Doesn’t sound like Revis was up for it, but Sanchez has said he would do it, but so far it hasn’t happened.

  38. jabberwock3 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:59 AM

Sounds like the NFL’s version of James and Wade. I hope it happens so I can laugh at the Jets like I laughed at the Heat. Do you really need two shutdown cornerbacks? Are there that many #2 receivers that it’s worth the money that could be better spent elsewhere?

    —————————————————
First, people should have to pass an IQ test before they are allowed to post. Or at least a general football knowledge exam. The lack of knowledge on this site is embarrassing sometimes.

Revis-safe egg? He’s actually a very good tackler, that’s why he gets so much credit. He is a complete CB. Do you know why that egg won’t break all game? Because nobody will catch a pass on him forcing him to tackle.

mrclearview – the Jets are so weak up front its laughable? How about the fact they held opponents to just over 90 yards a game on the ground (good for third overall)? We don’t generate a pass rush from the line, you’re right, but to say we’re so weak its laughable is well, laughable. We also finished third in total defense and sixth in points allowed. Whatever we’re doing on defense seems to be working quite well.

Try using statistics to back up your arguments instead of just making things up.

  41. stonecld33 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:08 AM

This means nothing! Waste all the money on corners thinking your gonna win a superbowl in the next coming years. All the negative comments, posted with no regard to the Jets impressive D stats, need to be followed by a “waaah” at the end. They are contrived by other team’s fans who wish their GM and front office were making moves like Tannenbaum and Ryan are. Jets have a solid corps from past drafts, and are building on that. And the media eats this up because opposing team’s fans have to post “waahh” comments. Don’t complain about the Jets media coverage if you are adding to the page hits, my friends.

  46. captainobvious1 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:35 AM

All you idiots need to understand something:

A good pass rush helps mediocre corners, and phenomenal corners helps a mediocre pass rush…so it goes both ways. If they get a pass rush and a less talented corner or they get Nnamdi and like Antwan Barnes or someone…we beat the Colts and Pats without Nnamdi or a pass rush…

    1. Sanchez is a joke of a QB (back to back led AFC Championships by the worst qb in the league in first 2 seasons, but OK)

    2. Revis can’t tackle (LOL, wtf…..these guys are retarded)

    3. Jets front 7 is a joke……no good players besides Harris……( Yet they are top 5 in rush D with Rex there each year……LOL again)

    4. Doesn’t matter anyway cause we have Sanchez (So we should fold as a team altogether I guess lol…..F getting better )

All of this plus Rex Ryan is a joke of a head coach

IDK how the Jets consistently make it far in the playoffs with such a “horrible team”

I mean jeeeeez our front 7 is a joke with no one, we have the worst qb in the league, braylon couldnt catch a football, they don’t know who are rb’s are (again, lol wtf?), our best CB can’t tackle?? (lol, wut)……….

Jets just defy the odds I guess.

Well Revis clearly isn’t going to line up in the box and try and limit the run game. He plays outside, if there’s a sweep or his man catches the ball he makes the tackle.

Watch the replays of his hits on Reggie Bush and Eddie Royal, he really looks like he’s shying away from contact there too. Easy to pick one highlight play (an onside kick nonetheless) where he seems to avoid contact.

Bold saying he’s not going to get us where we want to go. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. For a second year QB he’s done quite well in the playoffs. He hasn’t been the reason we’ve lost either time too. I agree he needs to elevate his game though, and I think in time he will.

Also to dispute your theory, Big Ben won a SB while posting a 22.6 rating in the game. Pretty sure defense and a good running game can win you a SB with DECENT QB play.

I agree 100%, Pats team to beat. (Also take into account the Jets have won 4 of 6 against the Pats).
