Darren Sproles narrows list to Saints, Eagles, Chargers

We wondered aloud last night why we hadn’t heard anything about Darren Sproles.

He probably was waiting for Miami to make a move at running back.  With Reggie Bush in place there, Sproles is nearing a decision according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Sproles has narrowed his three choices to the Eagles, Saints, and Chargers.  Philadelphia makes a lot of sense, but it shows that Sproles is being viewed as a clear backup.

The Saints and Chargers are more surprising.  Sproles could replace Reggie Bush, but the team already has Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, and Chris Ivory under contract.  We expected Sproles to leave San Diego, but it doesn’t appear great offers are out there.

It makes us wonder if it was really necessary for Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith needed to use the franchise tag on Sproles the last two years.

    He’s Little.

Eagles got enough 5’9″ rbs McCoy, Lewis, Devine. Dont need another one is Sproles.

If I had to choose a rb for the Eagles to sign I would say Michael Bush. Back I think in 2008 when he was in the draft and the Eagles were looking for a big rb hes the guy I wanted them to draft most. He was coming off a broken leg but he was great before that and he has shown recently that hes back to that form. I was so dissappointed when the Eagles instead picked up Tony Hunt.

Well we see how that all turned out. I dont want to see the Eagles pass on this guy again for another guy that wont do anything to help the Eagles offense.

Since the Vikes lost Chester Taylor last season I could see this as a good option.

Sproles in Phi would be awesome. A solid rotational guy/backup for Shady, IMO, is a huge need. Not as big as LB, but it needs to be addressed.

Something makes me think the Eagles have been in contact with Bradshaw.

A.J. Smith and the Franchise Tags…nice band name for a band who will never play at a Superbowl.

  6. eaglefreak54 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:25 PM

    Come to the Eagles!

  7. jbl429 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:28 PM

Strange, I don’t know what market there is for his services, but I could think of a few other teams where he’d be a good fit: New England, Green Bay, SF, Indy, St. Louis. He could start on all of those teams except SF and STL.

  8. snnyjcbs says: Jul 28, 2011 5:33 PM

Almost 60 catches last year, the kid is very explosive if a team knows how to use him, hoping he does not stay in AFC West with the Chargers.

  9. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 28, 2011 5:33 PM

Hopefully the Eagles get Sproles or Bradshaw.

  10. p4hbiz says: Jul 28, 2011 5:33 PM

    @offsideburns… I concur!

  11. illwillthemick says: Jul 28, 2011 5:33 PM

sproles could take a bunch of pressure off of the outside WRs and TEs… he is that much of a threat belive that!!!! GET IT DONE HOWIE!!!!

  12. tjp2033 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:35 PM

I can see the Eagles really going after him to help Shady and handle the kickoff/punt duties. Kickoff return has been a weak spot for years and the Eagles don’t want DeSean returning punts if they give him a new deal.

  13. humb0lt says: Jul 28, 2011 5:35 PM

I appreciate Sproles’ hard work and the many big plays he made for the Chargers. But he’s misplaced his kick-return mojo and his only value now is as a situational player on offense. The Chargers drafted Jordan Todman. If the Chargers were able to make a star out of Sproles they should be able to do the same with Todman, for the cap price of a 6th round draft choice.

For the Bolts, the money Sproles is asking is better allocated toward keeping Malcom Floyd, or finding an equal No. 2 receiver if Floyd signs elsewhere.

I don’t mean to bag on Sproles; I respect him immensely. But his value is limited.

  14. andyreidisfat says: Jul 28, 2011 5:35 PM

McCoy is 6 foot and bigger than you think he is.

But yeah i don’t see why the Eagles would pay for a third guy who is the same as the two they got in draft and undrafted free agents.

Devine is going to be a monster for this team if he can hold physically for 15-20 plays a game. I think he can and i also think he may be an even better return man than Djax because he will be sooooo hard to find behind the blockers. I would like to see the Eagles go look at LeRon McClain as well for a full back as he is a great blocker and a decent pass catcher. And i even though i like Owen Schmidt because he is a crazy lunatic, he doesn’t have the talent McClain does.

All that being said competion is a good thing so if the little guy wants to come here i’m all for it. But i see him replacing Reggie Bush in NO.

  15. cured76 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:36 PM

I’d prefer a LB like Tulloch but if Sproles comes relatively cheap, which I assume he would considering we already have a starting RB, it may be a good fit. KO, PR, and 3rd and 5s…he’d be a good fit for those roles.

  16. hoobsher says: Jul 28, 2011 5:39 PM

eagles?? are you kidding me? we just got two rookies exactly like him, not to mention a better version of him in lesean. way too much money for a return specialist and 3rd down player.

  17. crumpledstiltskin says: Jul 28, 2011 5:42 PM

How many RBs under 5’6 are the Eagles going to have on their roster?

  18. terrellblowens says: Jul 28, 2011 5:42 PM

He’s a good change of pace back for the Eagles, but they drafted Dion Lewis and signed Noel Devine. I’m not saying these rookies are better than Sproles, but in the situation that McCoy goes down with an injury, is Sproles really the guy you want to take 15-20 carries? I’d rather have a guy who is big and strong enough to be a capable full time runner if necessary.

  19. kane337 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:43 PM

Just say no to Saints and Eagles.

  20. sasquash20 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:51 PM

Sign J.Harrison to back up hes better then this midget

  21. snakeplizkn says: Jul 28, 2011 5:52 PM

He would run back kicks and be a third down back, the other midgets are unproven. Would be a nice signing if a reasonable contract.

  22. sasquash20 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:53 PM

Oh and D.Lewis had better numbers then Shadey did at Pitt, he will be better then Sproles and Devine.

  23. thunderwhip2000 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:54 PM

    hey macjackmccoy….

“I was so dissappointed when the Eagles instead picked up Tony Hunt.”

    Better than Mike Hunt.

  24. daggolden says: Jul 28, 2011 5:55 PM

Sproles becomes your punt and kickoff return guy. Has anyone seen this kid play? He is a matchup nightmare. Vick, Jackson maclin with McCoy and Sproles coming out of the backfield. WOW

  25. chargerdillon says: Jul 28, 2011 5:56 PM

He stays in San Diego unless he outbids himself to a new team

He got overpaid to be in the best city on earth. He’ll either recognize that and take a pay cut or go play for some other team in a crappy city without all the built in benefits that come with San Diego.

I’ll take living in San Diego as a Charger fan and never see them win a superbowl than live in some crap town like philly or new orleans

The swamp, the ghetto, or the beach, EASY PICK

  26. usmutts says: Jul 28, 2011 5:56 PM

    Sproles, LISTEN TO ME!

Go to the Saints. Brees. Payton. Possible Super Bowl. Who can offer more? No one.

You have talents not possessed by the other Saints backs. No one – no one! – can get you more touches in space that Brees and Payton.

    JUST DO IT!

  27. mrclearview says: Jul 28, 2011 5:58 PM

I hope for his own sake that he can come to terms with taking a pay cut, regardless of who signs him, because there’s no way that anyone is stupid enough to pay him the kind of money San Diego has been paying him. It’s laughable that they franchised him to begin with, let alone twice.

  28. smirk11 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:59 PM

Sproles to the Saints is a done deal. The announcement will come tonight or early tomorrow.

  29. pacash80 says: Jul 28, 2011 6:04 PM

If the Eagles intended on signing Darren Sproles, they wouldn’t have picked up the undrafted free agents they did (Noel Devine and Dion Lewis), who are the same types of running backs.

  30. sdottaylor says: Jul 28, 2011 6:15 PM

You know, the skins don’t have a valuable running back. Don’t get me wrong I love the skins, and I’m actually hoping for them to do something this season but they need a finesse running back! Wouldn’t mind him in washington!

  31. ep2404 says: Jul 28, 2011 6:23 PM

    Great fit in New Orleans.

  32. raider17 says: Jul 28, 2011 6:28 PM

Dude, Michael is a restricted free agent. Not sure if it still applies, but he got a 1st and 3rd round tender. Phila will not do that for Bush. It was a great pick by Al Davis tho. First pick of the 4th round on day 2. I was like U hoping the Raiders would take him and we did. Great Move by Mr. Davis.

    Long Live Al Davis!
    Just Win Baby!!!!

  33. laeaglefan says: Jul 28, 2011 6:32 PM

DeSean will still return punts with the Eagles, just on a more selective basis, the way they used Westbrook.
Meaning…only late in the game when they really need a score or at least good field position for a field goal attempt.

  34. Dave H says: Jul 28, 2011 6:59 PM

Sproles may decide that if the pay is not going to be great, and his role would be the same, to just play to in SD cheap. He is a quiet guy (REAL SHY) and may not want to go somewhere new. He is comfortable in SD and he already got a huge payday the last 2 seasons pulling in about 15 mil.

  35. fmwarner says: Jul 28, 2011 7:07 PM

I’d like Sproles on the Eagles. Devine and Lewis are undrafted free agents. Sproles is proven.

And there is about as much chance of Bradshaw coming to Philly as there is of Carson Palmer playing for the Bengals this year. Why would a good starter in his prime come to back up McCoy?

  36. axespray says: Jul 28, 2011 7:20 PM

    nah, he’s too juiced…
maybe he should lay off the HGH…ka-durrh!?

  37. nfceastisbeast says: Jul 28, 2011 7:50 PM

Eagles…Please sign the ‘Pocket Rocket’. Game breaking situational player. Just imagine, Vick, DeSean, Shady, Macklin, Sproles. That’s a world class relay team and a defensive nightmare. Though I like Bradshaw as well.

What a d-bag. This is why I’m glad the Chargers always choke every year. There’s a reason Eli didn’t want to sign there. If Sproles is smart, he’ll leave San Diego, because he’ll never win a Super Bowl there. Ask Eli Manning and Drew Brees.

  39. jeffpack says: Jul 28, 2011 9:34 PM

AJ Smith has a plan for consistently above average play — but will do nothing rash in order to win a Super Bowl. In his opinion, the squeaky wheel gets fired.
