Jason Babin is headed to the Eagles

Washington Redskins v Tennessee Titans Getty Images

Jason Babin said on PFT Live on Wednesday that he would love to follow line coach Jim Washburn from Tennessee to Philadelphia.

On Thursday morning, that’s exactly what he did.  Jay Glazer of FOX reports Babin will join the Eagles on a five-year contract.

It will be Babin’s second tour of duty in Philadelphia, but this time he’s coming off a Pro Bowl season.  The Eagles were rumored to be interested in Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards, but we suspect Babin came in for a cheaper price.  And Washburn knows just how to use him.

We think Eagles fans overestimated how much Philly needed another defensive end, but this gives the team enviable depth at the position. Babin and Trent Cole will be a load for opposing tackles to deal with.

I like this move a lot, and after the Kolb trade our D will be looking a lot better than last year. Only spot to fix now is linebacker I think they’ll go after Tulloch or Ruud they seem to make the most sense there.

  3. seabreezes51 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:12 AM

Good move. He will not be some guy that is fighting for a chance o get on the field this time around.
It’s his job to lose, not his to have to earn time.
When he was on the field for the Eagles he was a beast……

  4. phillyrick22 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:12 AM

good signing.. should be worth 12 sacks with Washburn being D-line coach…

“Babin and Trent Cole will be a load for defensive ends to deal with.” –> I think you mean that they will be a load for offensive tackles to deal with.

Eagles’ fans didn’t overestimate their need for a DE, there only a few on the roster, and they’re ordinary (aside from Cole). Trent Cole played in more than 80% of the snaps last season, and wore down; the Eagles have tried for years to find someone to play opposite him on the defensive line, including Babin, to no avail.

  6. romosexual says: Jul 28, 2011 9:13 AM

a bust the first time they had him and bust this time. The Eagles defense is small and not physical period. Dallas owns them lately….better keep Kolb boys cause ConVick wont last again this year!!!

  7. jlporcher says: Jul 28, 2011 9:13 AM

Cmon Philly lets get it!!!! Hopefully now that hes getting paid he continues his destruction of QBs. We tossed him away two years ago, I hope this doesnt come back and bite us in the arse :) Good signing though. Wasnt he a first round pick a few years back?

  8. bubbachuck125 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:14 AM

Last time Babin was in Philly he was under used. Always seemed to perfrom when he got into a game, and proved his worth last year…welcome back!

  9. romosexual says: Jul 28, 2011 9:14 AM

LOL…what, I thought Stewart Bradley was the next big thing….oh until he has exposed as china doll.

  10. chescobirdfan says: Jul 28, 2011 9:18 AM

Whoop te do… Hope he’s better then last time… We still need to do ALOT more for this defense..

  11. phillyphan975 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:19 AM

5 year, 30MM… I like it… Now sign Jackson, ditch Kolb (probably sign Young) and get us something to salivate about!

  12. caseysarasota says: Jul 28, 2011 9:21 AM

great job birds. go get a linebacker or 2 and finalize this deal with cromartie and our defense will really make a difference. I think another D.T. wouldn’t hurt either.

  13. polishrod says: Jul 28, 2011 9:21 AM

I hope that 5-year deal is really a 2-year deal, with a bunch of fluff on the back-end.

Babin is a decent player, but he’s 31 and a complimentary player. Not what the Eagles needed.

Here’s hoping Washburn can turn water into wine

“We think Eagles fans overestimated over how much Philly needs a defensive end”
    ————————————————
Did you happen to notice how much Trent Cole is worn out by the end of the regular season? Did you happen to notice their red zone stats last year? Please, this may be the most foolish statement i’ve read in a long time……

  16. rodericksilva says: Jul 28, 2011 9:23 AM

’bout time! I? was getting impatient. they didn’t resign their free agents and didn’t sign anyone else’s.

  17. bobbyhoying says: Jul 28, 2011 9:23 AM

I think his re-signing by the Eagles says something about the Eagles’ former defensive co-ordinator.

  18. flyinhighwithvick says: Jul 28, 2011 9:27 AM

Wow this is so exciting. I knew the Eagles would “strike quick” and “be aggressive” just like they said they would!!

  19. jersey5858 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:31 AM

I think it was a great pick up. They didn’t want Edwards because he would want as least $60 million. Remember they still need to sign Vick and Jackson. I think he will have double digit sacks. As for a DT, I like our DT’s. Bunkley is a pass rushing DT. He wasnt used right under Jimmy Johnson or garbage ass mcdermott. You will see a difference.

  20. effthenfl says: Jul 28, 2011 9:34 AM

Babin did a fine job when he was here.. don’t know why we got rid of him in the first place. Glad he’s back and glad we have Washburn to lead him

  21. igglesrah says: Jul 28, 2011 9:38 AM

Finally a move in free agency… Now go holla at Barret Rude Birds!

  22. bleedgreen says: Jul 28, 2011 9:41 AM

I always remember seeing Babin perform when he was on the field. Problem was, Gingerballs wouldn’t leave him on the field. Its no secret that Chris Clemons and Jason Babin went to other teams where they got to play and they performed well above average.

Clemons was in Philly for 2 years. 32 games, 0 starts, 16 tackles, 7 sacks.
He goes to Seattle and in 1 year has 49 tackles, 11 sacks.

Babin in Philly, 12 games, 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks.
    Tennessee – 16 games, 58 tackles, 12.5 sacks

So yeah, you tell me where the problem is?

  23. melonnhead says: Jul 28, 2011 9:52 AM

It’s his job to lose, not his to have to earn time.

    ———————————————————–

And you think that’s a good thing?

  24. drbob117 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:53 AM

Overestimated?? No way that Gregg wrote that if he actually has seen either Juqua Parker or Brandon Graham play.. and Graham won’t be back from his microfracture surgery until midseason at best.

  25. jersey5858 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:54 AM

They got ridvof him because McDermott had no clue what he was doing. McDermott was way in over his head. Now we have a legit defense with a legit dline coach who knows how to use his players. Now we need a LB and we are set. The Kolb trade will happen.

  26. superbowl42champs says: Jul 28, 2011 9:54 AM

good thing the eagles suck at drafting, since they had to overpay for a one year wonder and he plays the same position that their first round pick from last year plays so i guess they gave up on bradon graham already

  27. melonnhead says: Jul 28, 2011 10:01 AM

Wasnt he a first round pick a few years back?

    —————————————————————

Yeah, five teams ago. Two words: Darren Howard. Two more: Jevon Kearse. Jim Johnson himself couldn’t make those guys work but Washburn/Castillo are gonna turn Babin into a monster?

  28. kevinfromphilly says: Jul 28, 2011 10:16 AM

I’m whelmed. Babin will probably be solid at worst and it may turn out to be a great signing, but if this is their big free agent pickup, it’s not enough.

  29. jeffro33 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:18 AM

So I guess that this means that Brandon Graham won’t be ready to contribute….

Awesome. Jerome McDougle all over again, while FS Earl Thomas (clearly should have been the pick) had a sensational rookie year and will be a pro-bowler multiple times….

  30. jersey5858 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:20 AM

Castillo is a student of the game. He is intelligent and knows how to simplify things. He will line up his players andblet them play. Remember Jim Jonson required his ends to play the run first Nd that’s why Kearse wasn’t successful, he was a pass rushing first end. Castillo understands that Trent Cole is a beast he understands babin can rush the passer so he will let them do what they do best. Any comments.

  31. caseysarasota says: Jul 28, 2011 10:24 AM

Does anyone else think we need a DT? I just looked at our stats and Patterson had 3 sack and Bunkley had ZERO, Antonio Dixon had 2 sacks, Trevor Laws had 4…they need a sack guy and run stuffer…Cullen Jenkins would be great but the Redskins look like they will get him…I wouldn’t have liked to see A. Haynesworth even, he would play for Washburn. We def need a DT the more i think about it.

  32. imasturbate says: Jul 28, 2011 10:25 AM

They need to sign Nick Barnett. If they don’t, Vince Papale will be playing Linebacker!

Negative much? Did I miss free agency being over? It’s a very good pickup that helps the defense. If the Kolb trade goes down, those two players make a huge difference, as do the coaching changes.

  35. 706vet says: Jul 28, 2011 10:30 AM

It seemed Babin would get good push in his first stint in Philly. However, was he freelancing and not listening to coaches? He’s bounced off several teams in his career.

This is a signing for Jim Washburn, let’s see if he can control the beast this season. Will Tattoos see the money and become less motivated?

Graham will be out for most of this season, he’s not done by any stretch of the imagination.

  36. enrgy2burn says: Jul 28, 2011 10:57 AM

and the aggressive offseason plan FINALLY commences with the signing of a one hit wonder… super bowl here we come… man are those eagles leaders smart!

  37. t16rich says: Jul 28, 2011 11:35 AM

Way rather him than Ray Edwards. This guy is a football player.

  38. firethewalrus says: Jul 28, 2011 12:32 PM

If Washburn could get 12.5 sacks and a Pro Bowl appearance put of Babin in Tennessee, I assume his spend go-around with the Eagles will be much better than the first… Now it’s time to sign Mebane!!

    Fire The Walrus

Where was the “owning” in 2010?

When DeSean Jackson embarrassed the ‘Boys secondary by doing the Nestea Plunge in the endzone?

Or when we ran our third string up against the best the Cowboys had in December, and Demarcus Ware et al could only barely squeak out a win?

  40. eaglesdynasty says: Jul 28, 2011 2:27 PM

The. Thing people are missing a bit is that the difference between mcD’s scheme to washburns is night and day. McD required his end to make their reads and rarely just attack. The ends were responsible for gap control (at times two gaps), if a de didn’t read run, react to that maintain his gap and instead just shot upfield he would create huge running lanes and hurt the defense as a whole. In McD”s defense instincts, strength, reaction time and patience was paramount. Wahburn just attacks almost all the time. No read then react. No gap control simply beat your man and make a pllay.

That is why babin wasn’t as effective here before and why he was left go. This move makes complete sense. Babin is relatively cheap. A natural fit in washburns scheme and will let graham heal completely and take over the spot in a year or two

Whoever suggested we were giving up on graham is wrong its actually the opposite. They brought babin in to bridge the gap. For 2011 and 12 graham can rotate in at lde and rde and see 40-50% of the snaps then take over lde when he’s ready

Lmao at people wanting ruud. We would have just kept bradley if that was the case. Ruud was down in 2010 and has the same weaknessses as bradley. Tulloch or geno hayes would be way better. Daryl washington from arz. Would be perfect. I’d much rather go into the season with chany. Casey matthews and greg lloyd at MIKE over Ruud. Maybe sign erin hendersonn for depth. Quincy black. James anderson. Gary guyton are all guys I’d take over ruud.

In reality signing a guy like quincy black to a 4 year 12-15 mil deal and erin henderson for depth at SAM and MiKE would be more than enough to add to chaney fokou clayton matthews rolle and lloyd. Fokou/chaney/black as starters. Clayton as the nickel an casey matthews backup MIKE with henderson backup SwAM. Lloyd and rolle have to earn their spots.
