Jets want an answer from Nnamdi

image Getty Images

The free agency frenzy launched nearly 60 hours ago, and the biggest fish in the salary cap pond has yet to swallow a hook.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha remains available, with the Jets, 49ers, and Texans among the candidates for his services.

As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News tells it, the Jets are getting antsy.  “We’re trying to get an answer out of him, one way or the other,” an unnamed source told Mehta.

It’s believed that Asomugha would take less to play for the Jets than he could get elsewhere.  Of course, Asomugha first needs to know what he could get elsewhere.

Regardless of what he can or can’t get elsewhere, wouldn’t it makes sense to print out a copy of the Darrelle Revis contract, with Nnamdi Asomugha’s name on the document instead?  Though the structure may need to be different given the salary cap, the key indicators — average per year and guaranteed money — should be the same.  Given that the New York market can give Asomugha the springboard he apparently craves into a career in acting, how could he quibble with taking a deal that matches Darrelle’s?

How about, even better, both players agree to contracts $1.5 million less than Revis’s current deal and the Jets agree to donate $3 million on behalf of Revis and Asomugha to the Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (ACTS) program? That would save the Jets $3 million on the cap, give them a nice tax-deductible donation that would welcome Asomugha to NY in a way that would resonate nicely, and give the Jets enough cap room to make a run at Braylon Edwards.

What does NY have to do with a guy who wants to pursue a HOLLYWOOD career? Does he want to do Broadway?

The only plays Nnamdi wants to get down are from whatever playbook he ends up with.

How about because his market value appears to be a couple million a season more than what Revis currently has?

  20. rebeljpl says: Jul 28, 2011 8:04 PM

Kind of sounds like the Jets are getting a bit nervous waiting on their boy to make up his mind…

  21. seahawksfan37 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:04 PM

He is a great corner, one of the best the league has witnessed as a shut down corner. He should get paid like revis, or more cause he is better. But if he signs for more then revis, an revis gets more picks then him, then revis gonna damand more money. So u will have a problem brewing new York.

  22. bonniebengal says: Jul 28, 2011 8:04 PM

Dang with Revis and Asomugha the Jets will be scary to throw against.

  23. baldy55 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:06 PM

I love the idea of getting a player like Nnamdi on the Jets. But if we lose out on players like Cromartie,Edwards or Shaun Ellis while we are waiting, alot of people will not be happy.

  25. flyeaglesfly13 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:06 PM

If he does sign with the jets at the very least they will be in the super bowl this year. That would be the best corner duo in NFL history. I would have to watch some jets games just to see how sick those two are together.

  27. navis97 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:09 PM

  28. elleclouds says: Jul 28, 2011 8:09 PM

Why would he want to NY to get a ring? When have they made it to the Super Bowl, much less won it? If he goes there and takes less money, it’ll come back to bite him in the anal..

  29. green41563 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:10 PM

  38. ryanclark25 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:13 PM

if he’s not going back to oakland why is this even a question? he’s 30 never really been in sb contention with oakland, 49ers and texans may still be a year or 2 away. he’s made his millions money shouldnt be a huge issue unless the difference is massive which it likely wont be. he gets to play with afc championship contenders 2 years running and forms arguably the greatest cb partnership of all time with the other best cb in the league making most offenses essentially 1 dimensional if they maintain their form (u can only pass TE/3rd wr/rb so much)..like them or hate them the jets are getting there (sanchez is the key to if they push over the line, needs to show more). and this whole acting thing he wants so badly….am i missing something? why is he not already signing jet fan autographs?!

  52. tombradyfumbled says: Jul 28, 2011 8:24 PM

How come I haven’t seen one article about the Raiders resigning Nnamdi? All this BS about Houston and NY? Nothing about Oakland? The media and this site wants Nnamdi to end up in NY so bad it is getting a little irritating. I say he will give Oakland a fair chance to resign him before he makes his decision. Why would he not with Rod Woodson and Willie Brown as his coaches this year and the Raiders finally climbing out of the hole? If Al Davis wants him to stay he will find a way to make it happen. My gut feeling is he doesn’t want to go anywhere and will be happy staying in Oakland CA close to his family and where he grew up.

  53. descendency says: Jul 28, 2011 8:25 PM

  55. rmbay says: Jul 28, 2011 8:30 PM

They’ll have 2 great shut down corners, that’s for sure.

But with spread offenses becoming more prevalent around the league, and no pass rush, this may be a bit of overkill.

  56. tialen says: Jul 28, 2011 8:32 PM

Funny how the jets have already won the SB on this board. you are betting your cap over the next 4 years that this team can somehow make it this year. All these artificially low Cap #’s this year will bite you in the @$$ down the road.

  57. patsfan212 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:33 PM

all over for the Pats hahahaha.

1.) if you sign this guy you will have no money to fill your other 5-6 holes.

2.) sure you’ll have two shut down corners & a bunch of holes that people like Bill B. will expose

3.) The guy is overrated, all any team has to do is watch film of Jackson & Philip Rivers & learn how to shred the guy all day long.

I loathe the Jets, but, if i was the jets i would not sign him. As a Pats fan I sure hope they do.

  58. notoriouspro says: Jul 28, 2011 8:36 PM

  60. snnyjcbs says: Jul 28, 2011 8:40 PM

How slow are you people. The Raiders have not resigned Miller or any other priced Free Agent. They are almost finished reworking Wimbley with a long term deal clearing cap space. Told you people he would never go to Texans.

Al Davis wanted the market to develop and at Revis money lol compared to what Nnamdi was earning Big Al can make Nnamdi the highest paid corner again saving between 4 and 5 million per year on what he was due this year. Al also has guarenteed Nnamdi’s entire contract in the past.

Nnamdi will be coming home to the Raiders and the man that “reached” for him lol and retire an Oakland Raider. The Jets do not have a shot at what they can offer, I am more worried about the Niners because if Nnamdi does get an offer long term and way up there then Al Davis will let him go.

Nnamdi is and always has been an Oakland Raider. Al Davis wanted Nnamdi to go out and be flirted with, he earned it. It is now time to come home to Papa, Big C, Rod Woodson and the boys are waiting for ya. Jets?, it is a Pipe Dream

  63. scudbot says: Jul 28, 2011 8:42 PM

Nnamdi plays his side of the field only. Revis roams. They’ll hate each other by the second preseason game and they both do Twitter. Besides that, I wasn’t aware that “shut down corners” = a “true shut down secondary” especially when they can’t stop the run. You think no other teams are smart enough to figure out how to mount an offense against a team with good CBs – and that’s assuming they don’t try to sabotage each other. The Jets don’t get it. They never will.

shades of the NBA where players and not GMs choose the make-up of the team. By the way how did that turn out for the Miami Heat. Regardless of whether you spend money on the best cb tandem in the NFL, they then won’t be able to provide the money to get them the support around them to be successful. Teams in throwing downs will just go to their 3rd and fourth recievers and you have nothing there to stop them. Balance wins championships not one dimensional defenses.

  71. snnyjcbs says: Jul 28, 2011 8:50 PM

Now they think Nnamdi may not take the Jets office the East Coast Boys on NFL Network are starting to turn on Nnamdi. They are spouting off Nnamdi cannot or does not cover WR like Revis.

Nnamdi shut down A Johnson 0 catches and Revis has trouble covering bigger WR. Forget what all these clowns tell you, it is the QB that tells one who they fear. Revis has allowed more catches in all his years playing then Nnamdi has had ball tossed his way.

Revis across from Nnamdi all year would be turned into a D Hall lol, end of story.

  80. notoriouspro says: Jul 28, 2011 9:26 PM

revis is signed for the next 5 or 6 years and if nnamdi signs for like 4 or 5 years he will be 34 or 35 and it will be time to move on and that will open the cap for whoever they need at that time. the jets could shut down the two top offensive options of any team with those two in the back field. 3rd and 4th options can easily be follow by an outside linebacker shadowed by a safety. plus if can sign a good DE to go along with our two draft picks we should have a decent 3 man front. people underrate devito and pouha. although we may not have an elite rusher we were still tied for 8th in sacks. if 1st and 2nd options are shut down on every down we can put 9 in the box on running downs and 7 in the box on passing downs

  82. footballfan80 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:59 PM

    snnyjcbs:
Your post is really shortsighted. I wont even get into the top 100 player list or the vast majority of NFL experts who say Revis is defenitely better than Nnamdi.

How about Revis 2 years ago? Best season ever for a CB, end of story. You know why Revis gave up more catches than Nnamdi that year? Because you cant tell elite teams and their qb’s “Look Manning, Schaub, Ryan, you cannot throw all game to Wayne, Johnson, and White respectively.” They are going to go after Revis because they have no choice, they cant win games without going to their topplaymaker. And Revis still removed the top receivers from entire games, BIG games for that matter including playoff games.

I am sorry, you want to talk about careers and Asomugha doing this for longer. Well Revis has actually been doing this for longer. Nnamdi has only done this for 1 year, last season. Prior to last season, Nnamdi was shadowing only one side of the field while opposing offesnses just lined up their top wr on the opposite side and shreddred the raiders other corners. Revis has been doing this his whole career, shadowing the the other team’s TOP RECEIVER (not 2nd and 3rd strings), many times without help. You can look up the stats on profootball outsiders showing Revis covers the other team’s #1 receiver the highest percentage of any CB in the league.

If you want you can also check yards per attempt on there too, Which revis happens to rank #1 last year and the year before.

Also, keep in mind that Aso has never played in a big game before that actually mattered. Revis has. Just ask Ocho Cinco and Reggie Wayne. You can also ask the Chargers from last year where he was put on just about every other receiver in that playoff game, including a much bigger Gates and did not give up 1 catch the entire game.

Could any team afford to give two such massive contracts to two DBs and still expect to be able to field a team with solid players elsewhere while staying within the cap into the future??? Short term….yes…..long term no.

If the Jets get Asomugha they will have an incredible defense. They’ll be able to shutdown 90% of the offenses that they play against. They may even be able to parlay it into a Superbowl this year. But it’s unsustainable. If they can win a Superbowl with it, then obviously it’s great. Otherwise it really screws them up for the long term because it will prevent them from getting other quality players moving forward.
It seems like the Jets are going for an all or nothing strategy. If they win this year…HORAY!!! HORAY!!! …..if not…….they just cut their own balls off for the next 5 years.
