Mason’s a 37 year WR.
Starks was hurt last year and Pitt made it to the SB without him
O’Hara is 34 years old and was hurt last year.
There’s no conspiracy here.
How come Brady, Brees and Manning haven’t been cut? Mankins is signing his one year tender and won’t be cut. Jeff Saturday is still the center for the Colts. Dominique Foxworth hasn’t been cut either.
Stop with this nonsense NFLPA.
Plus, the owners locked the players out. They were the ones who wanted to change the deal. The players didn’t strike. What are they retaliating against? That they players didn’t kiss their collective asses?
Dumb theory here.

Looking at this year alone is not enough. Need to look at the last ten years, which includes periods of no labor unrest and the CBA renewal in 2006.

perfect case of a NFL player being black balled. Crazy how no one brought that up last year. Multiple teams needed a C last year includin the birds, but no one pickedup a perenial Pro bowler?? cmon.

” Retaliation ” is very difficult to prove, and to do so, Mgmt. would have to be able to document multiple occurrences of what would be considered “offenses”, and then have witnesses to each one. This is a messy and most difficult business.

O’Hara was cut because he’s an eleven year vet that played in a whopping six games last season and the team protected Manning better without him. He did make the Pro Bowl but all that proves is Pro Bowl voting should be taken away from the fans.

I might have missed something but a majority of the NFLPA player reps were long time Vets. Is it possible that these guys might have just negotiated themselves out of jobs? After all, it is much cheaper for NFL teams to go young now as opposed to signing and keeping Veteran players. Why pay a Derrick Mason a ton of money when AJ Green was just given a 4 year $19 million contract?

Player reps are normally the oldest guys (or team leaders). Shouldn’t be a surprise when they get cut.

I think the site is negligent in pointing out Mason’s release but not representing the fact the Dominique Foxworth of the Union’s Executive Committee is still on the roater with a huge cap number. If ownership wastruly targeting reps, it is odd they are rewarding the union leaders. The Ravens have a clearcut excuse to axe Foxworth with no repurcussions because of his injury and his cost, yet nothing has happened to him. Sounds to me if you wanted to slay the union beast you woild go for the head not an old toenail that needed cut.

It has happened before. We have owners who want to bring things back to the way they were in the ’70s. Guess what happened in the 70′s, no matter how good the player, if he became the NFLPA rep, he was G-O-N-E.

In prior lawsuits, the same thing happened. The name players were chopped. One of the reasons the players went with Brady, Manning and Brees this time. A little harder to chop them without it being obviously retaliation.

In other words, yes, the owners will cut players despite any damage to the team.

Ummm, as a general rule… the player reps are older, established players because who’s gonna vote in a rookie or 2nd year player to represent them.

Next, let’s add in the concept that player reps NEVER get replaced.

And finally, their leader is already retired (Mawae).

So yeah, most player reps are long in the tooth and/or injury prone. Mason and O’Hara both fit that description perfectly

I find it really hard to believe that an NFL team would act counter to its self-interest and cut a guy simply because he was part of the union leadership. If a guy is a good player, and he doesn’t make trouble for you in the locker room then you keep him.

It’s far more likely that some of the NFLPA team reps and alternates just fall into the “old, overpaid, and/or not that good any more” category that is so hard on veterans. I mean, Derrick Mason is 37. A 37 year old WR getting cut should never be a surprise.
