Report: Carolina won’t trade Steve Smith

Steve Smtih AP

Cam Newton will get his wish: Wide receiver Steve Smith reportedly isn’t going anywhere.

Pete Prisco of CBSports.com reports that Smith “almost certainly” isn’t going to be dealt.

The Panthers reportedly considered dealing Smith, but that changed in recent days as Smith apparently warmed to the idea of heading up a promising young receiver group. He met with the team Thursday morning.

Florio pointed out on Carolina radio recently that Newton is just the guy to mend fences with Smith.

(Besides, Smith couldn’t punch Newton in the face without a stool.)

UPDATE: Smith confirmed to Pro Football Weekly that he wants to stay in Carolina after discussing it with his family.

    awesome. ( sarcasticly speaking)

Carolina should already be thinking about what they will want for teams to switch spots with them in 2012 for Andrew Luck.

  3. southpaw2k says: Jul 28, 2011 10:32 AM

Crap…now what do the Ravens do to fill their WR vacancy?

  4. kantnockdahustle89 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:32 AM

Well there is still plenty of time before week 8 when teams might get desperate and give up more for him. Carolina definitely owes it to him to trade him to a winner.

  5. goldeelox says: Jul 28, 2011 10:33 AM

He can teach the young players at his position group how to punch their own teammates. This is going to be a scrappy receiving group.

  6. berniemadoffsides says: Jul 28, 2011 10:33 AM

That team is going to be a top 5 rushing offense, I can promise you that.

  7. steelers4385 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:35 AM

Hate to see guys with so much talent have it wasted on a team like the Panthers. Its shame.

  8. sterilizecromartie says: Jul 28, 2011 10:38 AM

Terrible signing. Smith treated Clausen like a dog last year. He will do the same to the latest rookie QB for the Panthers. Newton will never get a chance to be a leader in the huddle as long as Smith is in their with him.

  9. p4hbiz says: Jul 28, 2011 10:41 AM

Very Good, I was going to be sick if the Chargers would have pulled off a trade…

We’re already loosing Naumdi, bringing Smith to the AFC wouldn’t have helped the Raiders.

  10. panthers34 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:46 AM

Guy is a great blocker and probably has a couple thousand yard seasons left in him. Now that we have an OC who will call more than three plays I am excited about this season.

  11. ravensfreak00 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:58 AM

Smart move because Newton needs someone he can throw the ball to.

  12. bobbyyyd says: Jul 28, 2011 11:02 AM

Damn! I am loving this carolina hate!

@sterilizecromartie we didn’t sign steve he is under contract so the only way he was going to leave was via trade or we would of had to cut him. BTW the punching jokes are so old now think of some material people cmon! Steve has done nothing wrong since then and the guy that he punched ken lucas isnt even in the league anymore!

  14. mrclearview says: Jul 28, 2011 11:12 AM

I think Smith is a good receiver, don’t get me wrong here, but I’m guessing that the Panthers really wouldn’t get much in return for trading him at this point. Is it really worth giving up your #1 receiver for a 4th rd pick per say? They are probably smarter just letting him play out his contract and going from there.

  15. sterilizecromartie says: Jul 28, 2011 11:12 AM

    @ bobbyyyd

Right. I don’t know why I typed “signing”. I just think it’s a bad decision by the team to keep him on. Cut him or trade him.

When you draft a young QB, its best to surround him with young talent he can grow with and lead. Just look at Sam Bradford last year. The Rams didn’t bite on TO because they knew he would corrupt Bradford’s development and insult him in the huddle with his “throw me the damn ball rookie!” antics. Smith is going to do the same thing to Newton.

Plus, Carolina won’t be competitive for another 3 years at least, especially competing in that division. So what’s the point of keeping Smith? By the time they are competing again he will be a decrepit old fool.

Trade him. Get a draft pick. Continue building the nucleus of your young team.

Really? Dude, the Panthers were the #2 seed in the NFC two years ago. They’ve had one bad season. And he wouldn’t come to the Steelers, anyway – he’s a family man and probably wouldn’t want to catch passes from a rapist. You guys do have a good contingent of traveling fans, though. Lane Bryant always has a line out the door when the Steelers come down to Charlotte. It’s good for the economy.

  17. justkeepinitclassy says: Jul 28, 2011 11:18 AM

Pantherfan- are you seriously laughing about keeping a guy… just like you’ve done this whole pre-season… you haven’t taken one step toward improvement all you’ve done is re-sign guys you had last year… ah nvm i’m wrong, you did get cam newton

  19. offsideburns says: Jul 28, 2011 11:25 AM

how long will he stay patient with new recievers and a new QB? start the ticking time bomb clock now.

  20. bobbyyyd says: Jul 28, 2011 11:25 AM

how do you know carolina wont be competitive for 3 years? How do you know steve smith is going to hurt Cam Newtons development and insult in the huddle? I do not understand how you can compare 89 to T.O. anyways. Newton basically begged steve to come back. Yesterday Jon Beason said on wfnz in charlotte that the team needs smith because of his leadership/locker room leader. Panthers have a top 5 LB core, Top 5 o-line, Number 1 running game. Look for the panthers to surprise a lot of people this season. Oh yeah the guy in the username might be rocking some black n blue this season

  21. goldeelox says: Jul 28, 2011 11:30 AM

I doubt Smith will treat Newton the same way he treated Clausen.

  22. bobbyyyd says: Jul 28, 2011 11:31 AM

and for the young receivers we have Gettis, Lafell, Edwards, Kealoha Pilares, Clowney. 4 out of those 5 are 2nd year players. and clowney is still a young guy with a lot to prove.

  23. JSpicoli says: Jul 28, 2011 11:38 AM

I wouldn’t trade him either. 89 is one of the best players in the NFL.

  24. catman72 says: Jul 28, 2011 11:39 AM

LOL, PFT planet was so sure all these talented guys would run from Carolina as soon as they got the chance… what happened?

These players realize we’re not a 2-14 team in terms of talent, we’re a 2-14 team because we didn’t have a legit QB last year or a coaching staff who gave a damn.

  25. kadavenskd says: Jul 28, 2011 11:42 AM

Reports indicate that Cam Newton offered Steve half of his rookie contract…and backup in any fight.

  26. southcakpanther says: Jul 28, 2011 11:44 AM

Keep it coming haters, keep it coming.

I wouldn’t even wipe my dirty ass with a Terrible Towel. Steeler fans are a sad lot.

  27. alorenz30 says: Jul 28, 2011 11:46 AM

Any news about the good Steve Smith?

  28. pilot2011 says: Jul 28, 2011 11:48 AM

all Carolina needed was a QB (and a coach) with some balls…

Every one of the Panthers free agents and Steve Smith wanted to return to Carolina if those two were addressed. This team knows they can be good.

  29. sterilizecromartie says: Jul 28, 2011 11:48 AM

    @ bobbyyyd

There is no way Carolina competes in that division with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Josh Freeman until Newton has a few years under his belt. Talk about the LBs and RBs all you want. Any football fan knows it starts with the QB. Just look at the Panthers. As soon as Delhomme started sucking, so did the team.

When was the last time you saw Steve Smith not look disgruntled and/or angry and stomping around on the sideline huffing and puffing. It’s like his trademark look. I understand the guy is competitive, but you have to draw the line somewhere. It’s insulting to the QB when he acts like that. The first time Newton overthrows him or misses him wide open he is going to tear him a new A-Hole. Like offsideburns said, start the ticking time bomb clock now.

  30. acmepacker says: Jul 28, 2011 11:53 AM

It’s hard to see Jenkins go, he’s a great player and a good guy but losing him was pretty much expected.
Even Cullen said in an interview after the SB that he didn’t know where he’d be next year. I hope he gets big bucks and I wish him well. Redskins got a good player.

    ————
You’re exactly right and it helps prove my point. Carolina has drafted 4 Wrs in the last two years and picked up Clowney. Why are you drafting all these WRs if they never get a chance to play over Smith? Put them in the lineup. Let Newton lead and grow with these young guys. And send Smith to SD or NE so he has a chance to win in the twilight of his career. Everyone wins.

  32. southcakpanther says: Jul 28, 2011 11:58 AM

By all accounts, Steve and Cam have already developed a great relationship. Steve’s problem with Clausen last year was Clausen’s timid approach to everything. Clausen was not a leader. Cam Newton already has the respect of Smitty.

  33. sdboltaction says: Jul 28, 2011 12:01 PM

    @p4hbiz

Don’t you worry. The Chargers don’t NEED Steve Smith for the Raiders to worry…

  34. panthers34 says: Jul 28, 2011 12:03 PM

I’m not giving up on Clausen just yet. Now that he has seen(and gotten pasted by)NFL speed I’m curious if he has made the proper adjustments to his game.

  35. pantherguy344 says: Jul 28, 2011 12:10 PM

Then your guess is as good as mine……

Hahaha tell me this time last year you would have said Josh Freeman the and Bucs would be a decent team in the nfc? and would be contending for a playoff spot on the last day of the regular season. Tell me someone who said the chiefs would win their division and host a playoff game? Come on man the nfl is all about parody. I think we CAN be competitive this season if we can stay somewhat healthy. That can be said with about any team in the league. Like many users has/have been saying since FA started, Our own FA’s are resigning with us because they all know we are a good team and last year was an anomaly. I am not saying we will win the superbowl or anything, but we WILL be competitive. Newton and the panthers are looking to really prove the media/PFT wrong.

I’m a bit of a grammar nerd, so this sort of typo drives me about as nuts as people who type something like, “[Insert NFL team here] should of signed [Player X].”

Unless of course you really did mean the NFL is all about making a friendly mockery of other source material, that is.
