Report: Vince Young wants to play in Philly

Washington Redskins v Tennessee Titans Getty Images

The Eagles need a backup quarterback.  Quarterback Vince Young needs a job.

Sometimes, it’s just that simple.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Young is interested in joining the Eagles.  Some around the league believe that the Eagles are the favorite to land Young.

And just like Mike Vick expressed a willingness to welcome Brett Favre is a backup, Vick has no qualms about Vince Young joining the team.  “It would be good for Vince,” Vick said, via PhillySportsDaily.com.  “I don’t know how true it is, but I think it would be a great opportunity for Vince to come in and learn.  We’ll see.”

Young has no experience in the West Coast offense.  But we’ve got a feeling based on what Reid has done with every quarterback he’s every coached that he could get the most out of Young.

Which could be downright scary for every team the Eagles play.

    Should be going to Miami.

    He cant handle philly….

  3. trbowman says: Jul 28, 2011 8:16 PM

Why would the Eagles be his first choice over the Dolphins, where he could start?

  4. mastermathias19 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:16 PM

    Miami!

  5. tjp2033 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:16 PM

Id love VY in Philly as a backup. His numbers are never outstanding but all he has done is win. With some solid coaching he could be a star in this league.

  6. daburgher says: Jul 28, 2011 8:17 PM

Sounds like he has no desire to be a starter anywhere… He cant handle pressure.. not a guy I would want on my team

  7. ppdoc13 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:18 PM

I think that Philly would be the perfect place for Vince Young to land. He is similar to Vick so if he has to replace him there won’t be too much of a change in the playbook.

Most importantly is that Andy Reid has shown time and time again that he knows how to develop a QB. If Vince really wants to play in the NFL, Philly would be the place to do it. And with the number of injuries that Vick tends to get, Young would certainly do more than just sit on the bench gathering dust for the entire season.

  8. xstaticonradio says: Jul 28, 2011 8:18 PM

Yeah I’m sure Philly’s fans will be great for him….

  9. melonnhead says: Jul 28, 2011 8:18 PM

you just can’t write comedy like this! You’d think they’d be tired of guys that scored single digits on the Wonderlic that can’t read beyond the second progression by now. So when does this motley collection of reprobates change their name to the “Mean Machine”?

  10. ninjapleazee says: Jul 28, 2011 8:18 PM

yes.. sign him to 2 years.. make him look good and rape another team for draft picks/players

  11. goldeelox says: Jul 28, 2011 8:19 PM

That would officially assemble the most intelligent QB duo in the NFL.

  12. vbe2 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:19 PM

Mike, you should look up the name Mike McMahon from the Eagles 2005 season.

  13. rolltide510 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:20 PM

Really the best possible situation for VY would be to go to jail for two years for running an illegal dogfighting operation, have all his money taken away, be humbled, and THEN sign with the Eagles. I’ve seen this work in the past with lazy QBs.

  14. axlviking says: Jul 28, 2011 8:20 PM

“…scary for every team the Eagles play.”
What, are the other teams afraid he’ll throw his pads at them at the end of games?

  15. radrntn says: Jul 28, 2011 8:20 PM

everybody wants to play in philly….i mean doesn’t everybody look good in green. I have a ton of green suits in my closet, along with my green shoes, and my green car.

  16. sdchargers25 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:21 PM

I want to play in Philly too…..doesnt mean its gonna happen

  17. rhf123 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:22 PM

I bet Andy can flip a 1st out of VY, let’s do it. Can’t ask for a more capable backup QB, seriously.

  18. eagleboy10 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:22 PM

Vince Young has nothing but talent and potential in him. It’s a shame his mouth is the reason he can’t reach it, He’s only stopping himself.

  19. terrellochouno says: Jul 28, 2011 8:22 PM

No way Vince young’s ego allows him to be a backup QB.

  20. snowpea84 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:23 PM

Jesus. I’m already pretty sure I’m rooting for a team that is not the Eagles this year. If they signed Young, that would be set in stone.

  21. iamthorny says: Jul 28, 2011 8:23 PM

If Vince wants to “play” he doesn’t want Philly.

First, there’s Vick in his way, and second, if he does play, and he has mental issues already, being around Philly fans is the last place he should ever be.

  22. ohiogti2011 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:23 PM

I’m an Eagles fan so I’ll admit my opinion is swayed, but I would love this. Not because I think VY would save the day, but I do think they need an experienced qb just in case, and he does fit the Vick type of offense. Not to mention I’m sure they could come up with some crazy plays with both of them on the field. Could be fun to watch

  23. thesmartest1 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:23 PM

Pretty sure he just saw the Kolb contract terms…

  24. moufpuncha says: Jul 28, 2011 8:24 PM

Too bad nobody cares. You don’t get to flip out on your coach, run away crying into the night when you get benched, and then say who you’re interested in playing for.

  25. bigtimetexanfan says: Jul 28, 2011 8:24 PM

VY from TU sucks, I believe the eagles signed undrafted free agent Jerrod Johnson, who could step in and play say after week 4. He is stronger, faster, WAY SMARTER !!!

  26. duffer58 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:27 PM

It should say Vince Young wants to sit on bench in Philly.

  27. emersonbigguns says: Jul 28, 2011 8:27 PM

Hose A or Hose B. Happy feets who take off and can’t let a play develop downfield. When you reward idiocy, you get more idiocy. How much was Andy Reid guaranteed on his contract?

  28. anonymouslyanonymouscommentor says: Jul 28, 2011 8:27 PM

And could also be scary for the next team that needs a QB

  29. JackLeone says: Jul 28, 2011 8:28 PM

If this happens, one word: WOW

  30. pacash80 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:29 PM

Bring him in! If Vick gets hurt and he does well in his place, the Eagles could trade him to some suckers who will give us a Pro Bowl player and a second round draft pick like the dumb Cardinals did!

  31. loytomaki says: Jul 28, 2011 8:30 PM

Considering the physical toll Vick takes with his style of play, VY might actually see some field time in Philly so it would make sense that he wants to go there. He would learn more behind a Manning, or Brees, or Brady but would be much less likely to play.

  32. teal379 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:32 PM

    Scary for other teams?

That depends on what the “best out of Vince Young” actually is…

Does anyone really know and if he comes in and doesn’t perform, can he handle that Philly fan base? Where is he – mentally? That’s not a slam but a question based upon his previous behavior.

  33. scrapdawg12 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:33 PM

Cannot play with them, cannot win with them, cannot coach with them, cannot do it, i want winners, i want people who want to win…………..Don’t do it Eagles, Vince is trouble!

  34. itsmammoth says: Jul 28, 2011 8:33 PM

What makes Vince think he can handle a crowd like Philly? Isn’t this the same guy that cried in Nashville, TN?

  35. myasylum11 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:34 PM

    Farve is still better.

  36. ipeefreelyagain says: Jul 28, 2011 8:35 PM

I was getting criticized when I said the same thing about McNabb that he wasn’t that good- he was just surrounded by a good team.

I agree with you, that its very likely Vince Young is the next Kevin Kolb / Jeff Garcia / Koy Detmer / AJ Feely …

Vick will get hut, and Young will get some face time. Then next year, someone will spend a top pick for Young.

  37. 3rdnlong says: Jul 28, 2011 8:35 PM

Vince want’s …. What Vince wants is to be paid and hangout and if it doesn’t go his way he wants to take his ball and go home !

  38. centexhorn says: Jul 28, 2011 8:36 PM

He probably realizes there’s a good chance of Mike Vick getting hurt.

  39. dawkinseffect says: Jul 28, 2011 8:39 PM

Madden NFL 2012 the game just got crazy for Eagles fans if this turns out true

  40. JAM says: Jul 28, 2011 8:41 PM

Kyle Orton wants to start. Kolb wants to start. Is this guy just a quitter? Young and talented and WANTS to be a back-up? No chance he beats out Vick so what’s he going to do? Sit on the bench and hope for Vick to get hurt so he can ‘show what he’s got’? Have some balls and go try and start for the Raiders or a team you have a chance of seeing the field under normal circumstances…

  41. ezmac58 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:43 PM

Soooooo……he doesn’t want to play?? That’s sounds like a QB to invest in!!

  42. wyldsoul says: Jul 28, 2011 8:43 PM

With the elimination of the 3rd string quaterback as emergency player rule I see some dangerous combinations with VY

  43. lemmam says: Jul 28, 2011 8:45 PM

vy may want to play in philly, problem is he sucks as a football player and as a human being

  44. kyleortonsarm says: Jul 28, 2011 8:45 PM

  46. Dynasty says: Jul 28, 2011 8:46 PM

  47. davidm1886 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:46 PM

pft thinks he’s one of the top 32 qbs and should start somewhere…..i think to get VY as a backup would be an incredible move…..it’s a situation where everybody thinks for sure vick will miss some games….everybody keeps saying it. so why not bring in a qb who’s mobile like him….who’s still a great talent….and to have VY as the backup…wow. especially after getting DRC and a 2nd for kolb. i think VY thinks vick will likely miss a few games and he’s seen what reid has done with qbs…..he wants a chance to revive his career long term.

  48. simplesimon1 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:49 PM

Hey PFT….I’d like to play in Philly too….so would Jamarcus Russell and Jeff George…Give us a call!!!

  49. vikescry1 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:51 PM

so philly will have to run first qb’s? lol vick is good but vince is a headcase.

  50. cured76 says: Jul 28, 2011 8:52 PM

I just hope VY knows that perceptions of shirtless tequila parties may be different in Phillly than they are in Texas. Just sayin’.

  51. bearfanrome says: Jul 28, 2011 8:55 PM

Am I the only one who saw this coming? Vince realizes, thanks to his agent, that he can fill in for Vick for 1 game or 2, play really well, and then get a huge contract from the next team that is one QB away “from making it”, with an idiot GM/coach desperate for a new QB.

Either that or Vince turns out to be Vick’s replacement when he loses his speed and is traded to the Redskins or Vikings for a 5th round pick in 2 years.

  54. phinheads says: Jul 28, 2011 8:58 PM

I watched Jamie Nails praise ‘VY’ tonight and Mike Lombardi ABSOLUTELY railed on VY siting multiple Tenn team sources and then railed on Dukes for talking about VY like he has ever earned anything or anyones respect. It would great. I didnt know Lombardi had that in him. It’s worth watching.

VY will say anything to get a job at this point. If Phily gambles on him, VY will be in a club and getting into a fight or have a run-in with somebody over his cheesesteak not being perfect before the 4th game of the season. In the event that Vick gets hurt, and that is somewhat probable, you throw VY into the game, he plays poorly, and his confidence is shot for the rest of the year. Pick your poison, Philadelphia. You can take the punk out of Tennessee, but………. you all know how the rest goes.

Just about the time they get into the playoffs and Dallas sits at home again in January.

In other words, later this year.

  60. melonnhead says: Jul 28, 2011 9:09 PM

If Vince wants to “play” he doesn’t want Philly.

First, there’s Vick in his way

    ———————————————————-

C’mon. Vick has played a 16 game season exactly once in his career. It’s a given that he’ll go down.

  61. jaltreality says: Jul 28, 2011 9:12 PM

I never really understood the comparisons between Vick and VY, which began when VY was coming out of college. Vick is faster and has a way stronger arm, and seems to have greatly improved his accuracy. VY is not nearly as fast, has a weaker arm, and seems to have an odd throwing motion that starts lower and farther away from his body than it should (though, to be fair, Philip Rivers epitomizes an odd throwing motion and he’s doing pretty well).

VY is bigger than Vick (I think a few inches taller, for instance), but really I don’t see him as replacing Vick as seamlessly as most think.

  62. jfluke65 says: Jul 28, 2011 9:19 PM

As a Philly fan, I say HELL NO!! Yeah, his win/loss record is good. He also had one of the best RB’s in the league behind him with a coach that was willing to go for 3 yds and a cloud of dust. Ain’t gonna happen with Reid. Young is overrated.

  63. jebdamone says: Jul 28, 2011 9:19 PM

i don’t think you could make a better decision for yourself and your future vince. with vick being injury prone and on the wrong side of 30 you could build trade value 0r possibly be the starter in a year or two for obviously one of the most QB friendly programs in the nfl.

  64. melonnhead says: Jul 28, 2011 9:25 PM

I said this a couple of months ago..

Birds trade Kolb and get DRC.

They sign Vince Young as the backup.

Philly would love this guy. He got just enough bad boy. We will rectify him and in two years sell him back off to the open market.

Vince will love Philly and Philly will love Vince. Get it done Andy and Joe.

Bring in Vince Young baby, thats just what we do. Flip quarterbacks for a profit.

    Some people flip houses.

    Some people flip kilos.

Andy Reid and the Eagles just flip quarterbacks. Sign him to a two year 2 million dollar deal and then trade him for a first round pick and Cameron Wake next year. Easy. It’s just what we do.

  68. caseysarasota says: Jul 28, 2011 9:42 PM

  71. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 10:05 PM

    jfluke,

Good, intelligent post from a philly fan.

Birdobeamen, You won’t be flipping VY for a profit. You got a 2nd round and a 3rd/4th round pick for Vick from Washington, but let’s face it – Washington overpays for everybody. Vick, yes, you could flip him for a profit, but you won’t.

Flybirdsfly, do you really want credit for this telegraphed move? I, too, speculated the same thing about Kolb, DRC, and VY when it was apparent he would be out in Tennessee and when the speculation started with Kolb going elsewhere. A whole host of sportswriters also thought the same thing. How are you going to rectify VY if he is only playing to spell Vick? There are those who can be rectified (Vick, who went to prison, got his head and his priorities right, and was fortunate enough to come back and play at a high level) and then you have VY, who is young, dumb, uncoachable (if Fisher can’t coach him, I doubt Reid can), and won’t be worth anything as a back-up IF Reid and the Eagles take him on.

It looks like a fit on paper, and the Eagles may pull the trigger, but I think there is trouble in Philly if they do bring him aboard. Just my opinion, but VY is a headcase, and a headache just waiting to happen. Just because it worked out with Vick, it doesn’t guarantee anything with VY.

Having said that, it would do VY good to man up WHEREVER he goes. He burned his bridges in Tenn, and he will be lucky to still have a job in the NFL at all this year. This will be his last chance to make it in the pros, IMO.

  72. 00reo says: Jul 28, 2011 10:07 PM

hahahahahahahahahahaha at the thought of VY being able to learn and run the WCO. he doesn’t have the work ethic and possibly the mental capability.

  73. janvanflac says: Jul 28, 2011 10:19 PM

I remember that game where it was 4th and 10 and the Giants thought they had him in the grasp and he got out and won the game. I think that was the 2nd most embarrassing loss for the G-Men.

He’d fit in perfectly in Philly.

  74. raylewis52 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:23 PM

Vince reminds me of Donnovan McNabb because of the amount of irresponsible reporting and disrespect he gets from the fans and media. With that said don’t go to the Redskins they will kill your career nicely.

  75. wizahdry says: Jul 28, 2011 10:39 PM

To think they used to criticize Gruden in Tampa for collecting QB’s. How many has Reid collected in the last 3 years?

  76. flyeaglesfly13 says: Jul 28, 2011 10:45 PM

Definitely would be a better back up than if we kept Kolb. The only other way we could get a better back up is if we traded for one or talked a certain someone outta retirement for the hundredth time and I don’t see either of those happening. Plus two years down the road we keep the better of the 2, Vick or Young, and the other gets us at least a 1st rounder plus some. So I say go for it!

  77. MichaelEdits says: Jul 28, 2011 10:47 PM

I’d take Young over Favre any day just on general principle. Then when you consider that he and Vick have similar skill sets, and Reid coaching, this is definitely a great idea.
