Stephen Bowen joins the Redskins

Hall of Fame Game Football AP

The Redskins picked up an expensive defensive lineman Thursday, it just wasn’t Cullen Jenkins.   At least not yet.

For now, Washington fans can envision how former Cowboys defensive end Stephen Bowen will fit into the dramatically re-modeled Redskins defense. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that Bowen will make $27.5 million over five years, including $12.5 million guaranteed.

That’s a lot of money for a guy with only 11 career starts, although it’s worth noting Dallas wanted to keep Bowen.  We’ll withhold judgement on this one because we heard from a number of people that Bowen was among the best sleepers in this year’s free agent class.

For that money, he better be a difference maker.

We also need to score points on offense you know…

  6. sprest83 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:32 PM

Wow! That was alot of money. I figured the Boys were going to lock him up for cheap, now I see why they let him go.

  8. godofware says: Jul 28, 2011 1:33 PM

Good Luck and I don’t blame you Bow. Dallas sure wasn’t about to break that much bank on you.

    See you September 26th!

  9. cg31 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:33 PM

The Cowboys wanted to keep him…but not at that price. Jerry might be crazy but he isn’t insane. Good luck with that one Dan. Good player…yes. Difference maker…no way.

  10. bturner032002 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:33 PM

why no mention of the redskins getting CB Josh Wilson from Baltimore @ 3 years 13.5 mil???

probably the best signing we’ve made in years! best CB ravens had…

Keep trying to buy that championship Danny boy. It hasn’t worked for you in the past, and it won’t be working now.

The Redskins are finally starting to make a little sense. Now let’s focus on the secondary and “O” line. We’ll address QB in next years draft with a little “LUCK”
    HAIL !!!!!!!!!!!

Or else what, they’ll stop handing out big money contracts to guys that don’t do anything?

  15. bangthedrum22 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:34 PM

wow thats huge money for a guy that didnt do much as a cowboy.. They did want to keep him but that price is crazy. And his 11 start were over a cpl of season becasue of injuries , he was really a 2nd stringer

  16. alphaq2 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:34 PM

Hey Mad555, before you post your “racistskins” comment, I have a suggestion. Why don’t you spend the time trying to hook up with boysroll so you guys can foster your hate-the-skins love child.

  17. ezdoesit209 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:35 PM

Coming from a Cowboys fan this one is bitter sweet! lmao *fights back tears* I really wanted to see Bowen resign with the Cowboys but for 27.5 mill???? HAHAHAHA bon voyage bruh!

“That’s a lot of money for a guy with only 11 career starts, although it’s worth noting Dallas wanted to keep Bowen. ”

Obviously not at $27.5 million. Dallas will probably use that money as part of a deal to get Cullen Jenkins.

    Fingers crossed.

  20. skoobyfl says: Jul 28, 2011 1:35 PM

How many years is the contract??

  21. phil325 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:35 PM

A 27.5 million dollar sleeper????? Where do I sign up???

  22. toonsterwu says: Jul 28, 2011 1:35 PM

It’s a decent signing. A lot of money for him, but Bowen had played fairly well when he was in games. If they add Bowen/Jenkins/Cofield to the DL, that’s the makings of a solid odd-front, particularly when you add in Carriker and Jarvis Jenkins. A bit concerned about depth at NT for them, with Ma’ake waived, but give the Redskins credit. They are going about this the right way – rebuilding the trenches, not overspending at CB, and not overspending on offensive skill guys.

  23. bcjim says: Jul 28, 2011 1:36 PM

Suck on it and like it Cowgirls

  24. isonic1 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:36 PM

I’m sure he’ll be better than Haynesworth was! $12.5 million guaranteed for 4 years really isn’t that big of number. Plus the skins have to spend money due to the amount of open cap space they have.

  25. scubasteve4930 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:37 PM

You would think this is another no-cap year with the amount of money snyder has pulled out of his pockets these past 2 days

  26. berniemadoffsides says: Jul 28, 2011 1:37 PM

I’m amazed they wouldn’t sign a guy like Sidney Rice. They need a playmaking WR like him more than anything else… well, they still need a QB, too.

  27. imissnumber21 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:39 PM

Why are we so awful?scrub player after scrub player.give up 2nd rounders for guys just to get 6th rounders in return.spend boat loads of money on guys that take every other play off and 35 yo receivers.worthless.

  28. dvdxtreme says: Jul 28, 2011 1:40 PM

The Redskins needed fresh legs on the D-line, and while not a big name Bowen was productive when his number was called in Dallas. The question is can he be consistent now that he has gotten paid?

  29. blackqbwhiterb says: Jul 28, 2011 1:40 PM

As long as each hour passes without signing any head cases at QB……………….

  30. xxflydjxx18 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:41 PM

So Cullen Jenkins and Stephen Bowen looks like the Redskins are going in the right direction but i still think we need another cornerback.

  31. skinsfaninnebraska says: Jul 28, 2011 1:41 PM

That is pretty big money. Hope it works out. He is younger than Cullen Jenkins though, which could be a good thing.

  32. drop703 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:42 PM

These contracts aren’t guaranteed….it’s basically a 3 year deal worth 12.5 million. C’mon you guys know how NFL contracts work…

On the other side of it though…I’m a football fanatic and I barely know who this Bowen guy is. This is definitely a wait and see signing.

  33. steely185 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:42 PM

Important to note it’s a 5 year deal so it’s a cap friendly number. You have to spend nearly all your cap space by the new CBA and the guy is not injury prone like Jenkins. Also 3 years younger. It’s a value that won’t cost much if you have to eventually cut him.

D line is done. Tackle, guard and cb now and room to do it. 90 man roster to fill too.

  34. cubano76 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:43 PM

If you can’t develop them, buy them!

  35. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 1:43 PM

Snyder, true to form once again – handing out unjustified big $ to unproven guys. Is that the movie”Groundhogs Day” I hear in the background? I liked Bowen, but he defected to the Skins, so he now he will be regarded just like the rest of the 4skin players, with nauseating disregard. You defect to a division foe, and you get what you get. Dallas was not going to spend franchise-type $ for a guy who may or may not be that guy at DE. Well, I hope that Cullen Jenkins will now be on the radar that much more with this development. Bowen was slated to be a starter at DE, so the Cowboys will absolutely have to address this position that much more. They still better be looking to fill S as well, and I still expect S Michael Huff to be a Cowboy by the end of the weekend.

  36. bhindenemylines says: Jul 28, 2011 1:43 PM

    bcjim,

Don’t get too excited about your team signing a bunch of castoffs from other teams.

Don’t you think that if these players were worth what the skins are paying them their teams would have matched their offer and kept them?

Remember when the skins got McNabb & Haynesworth? How excited were you then?

How’d that work out for you?

$50+ million later and still 6-10.

Let’s revisit this in December and see how you feel then.

  42. mavajo says: Jul 28, 2011 1:46 PM

  43. a55hol says: Jul 28, 2011 1:47 PM

  44. calvindawg says: Jul 28, 2011 1:47 PM

Let me save the armchair GMs some time:

    1. The Redskins will still suck. Once a team has a losing record, they never rebound. Ever. They stay bad for ever, into eternity.

    2. Signing other players is pointless because the Redskins have Howdy Doody at QB and madador’s on the offensive line.

    3. “Everyone” knows that you have to build through the draft. No winning teams have ever signed a free agent.

    4. Dan Snyder always overpays.

    5. The Redskins will still suck.

This will account for about 90% of the negative feedback.

Madd5555 and boysroll are definite examples why there should be lifeguards on some gene pools.

No I think this is good signing * (he is not oficial until after 6 pm est tomorrow) not only do you strengthing your team but you weaken a division rival.

  49. mdnittlion says: Jul 28, 2011 1:51 PM

Two ways to look at it:
    1. He’s a sleeper and might actually help the team win more than 6 games
    2. He’s a bad choice and just another in a long line

Only time will tell, but you have to be honest isn’t that a lot of money for only 11 starts in a career that started way back in 2006?

  50. bunjy96 says: Jul 28, 2011 1:52 PM

So, he was a projected starter for the Cowboys and you were ok with that. Now the Redskins sign him and he’s “unproven.” Gotcha.

  52. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 1:54 PM

bcjim, “suck on it an like it, Cowgirls”? WOW – what an intellectual post! The4skin fan base must be proud to have you further dragging down their collective IQ’s. Bowen just got BANK because he was on a division foe. 11 career starts, 22 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks last year, and you pay him 27.5 million with 12.5 million guaranteed over 5 years? That fifth round pick (overpaid by the Pats) from NE to acquire Fat Albert must have Snyder in a giving mood. Babin, who Philly just signed, got HALF the guaranteed $ Bowen just got, and he had 13 sacks last year! I will humor you and will”like” the part about Bowen getting overpaid by a division foe and then underperforming. The “suck” part I will leave for your 4skins, specificaly their performance this year with Grossman or Beck at QB. NFC East basement – you have the 4skins as your tenant again this year.

  53. justkeepinitclassy says: Jul 28, 2011 1:55 PM

Great free agency period for the skins… great moves! Got rid of the trash, brought in solid players for long term deals, set up to be legit once we get a QB

  54. baddegg says: Jul 28, 2011 1:55 PM

The one thing about the Skins I will say is: next they need to be shoring up the Offensive Line a bit. I am ok with the signings and don’t think they are foolish like everyone else.

But, now you need to look at OL. QB I’ll give you a pass on because there is no one there unless you want to trade picks for Orton. But OL needs to be focused on now.

Somehow thats a BAD thing now? He will make the $27.5 million if he meets performance incentives…therefore if the Skins pay him anything close to that figure over the course of the contract, it would be safe to say he was worth the money anyway…

    baddegg,

“gotcha”? No, you don’t got it at all. Don’t try to pigeonhole me with what I said, so I will clarify it more for you – you 4skin fans need help understanding at times, so allow me to ‘splain. Yes, he was supposed to be a starter for Dallas because we don’t currently have anybody better at DE – like S, it is absolutely a position of need. Like I said, I would have been fine with keeping him for his sleeper potential, but absolutely would have passed on matching what Snyder payed him, as he IS an unproven player with only 1.5 sacks last year. He was an UFA, so he had the option to test the market, and Snyder obviously paid him on potential, not on his results. He is a sleeper – and now we will all see if he stays asleep.

  70. ham1 says: Jul 28, 2011 2:28 PM

  71. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 2:38 PM

    ocho,

12.5 million over 5 years guaranteed for a guy with 1.5 sacks last year.? “Bowen is only guaranteed 12.5 million over 5 years”. It isn’t a bad thing for Snyder who is used to overpaying for players. IF Bowen meets performance incentives, if the skins pay him anything close to that figure over the course of his contract….. There are a lot of ifs in your post. 2.5 million per year if he stayed all 5 years and performs commensurate with his pay ISN’T a bad deal. But what happens if he ends up only staying one or two years, and then gets cut, you do the math – 12.5 million guaranteed for only one year, or 6.25 million for 2 years in guaranteed $ that Snyder would have to eat. You are right when you say “some ppl just don’t have a clue to what is going on”. Only lasting one or two years is where the risk lies with this contract and you conveniently aren’t addressing this in your post, now are you?

  73. baddegg says: Jul 28, 2011 2:49 PM

    jsrdc, thanks for the clarification.

BUT, I did have to just take a little shot. It just seems like whenever the Redskins make a move, everyone rationalizes why it’s a stupid move.

Bottom line, Cowboys were targeting him to keep, and the Redskins outbid them. “Overpay” is a ridiculous argument. Redskins have avoided cap hell for years despite all predictions to the contrary. After that, it’s Snyder’s money, so why should I care. I’m glad they got a guy they think can contribute.

That said, yes, he has to show his worth now. The coming season will show it one way or the other.

  74. truefan2011 says: Jul 28, 2011 2:53 PM

Hey Cowgirls Fan’s U DONT HAVE ANY MONEY! JJ’s poor cap managment, has lead you to point where yall have weak corners, safties, cutting lineman left and right, and don’t have enough to keep a guy that was your #2 priority, lol have fun filling holes with no money.

  75. pnut87 says: Jul 28, 2011 2:56 PM

Snyder loves signing players from divison rivals doesn’t he? Hasn’t he figured out that the playbooks change every year? IT DOESN’T WORK. But hey, not like he’s overspending on players that are worth overspending on. amiright?

Stop worrying about Bowen, he’s going to fit in nicely for us. Worry about what your team is going to do, and stop worry so much about what the Redskins are doing.

Did the Cowgirls get under the cap yet? Last time I checked, they were 18 million over.

How did that Roy Williams trade work out for you guys. I thought he was bringing a Super Bowl to Dallas.

  77. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 3:11 PM

    baddegg,

You should care what Snyder does because it is YOU the fan who are paying Snyder who in turn pays these players. It is YOU who are flipping the bill for Snyder and all of his well known mistakes – Case in point – Fat Albert Haynesworth, who will go down as THE WORST FA signing of all time. Snyder doesn’t ALWAYS make stupid moves. Atogwe was a good signing. Beyond that I have no other examples, LOL. We agree – Bowen will show his worth one way or the other.

  78. skinsfan1981 says: Jul 28, 2011 3:12 PM

Once again, I have to read through a bunch of idiotic posts by people who have no clue what they are talking about, just love to hate on teams. For one, the Skins are still 30 mil under the cap with all but 2 of their 12 draft picks signed. Bowen was a good pickup at a need, he’s 27, not 31 like Jenkins and the Cowboys wanted to keep him. This team had to use this free agency to fill all the holes left by the older players we needed to let go to get younger and more athletic. They still need another cb, but the D is actually shaping up very nicely. Offense will be addressed next year. This team isn’t trying to win this year, if they were, Asomougha, Jenkins, Franklin wouldve been signed on tuesday at 10am. Yeah the past 12 years have been awful, but i’ll say it again, this team is on the right track and has def changed their ways. 6-10 is probably the record after this year, but 9 picks in 2012 and in 2013 will complete the process

    baddegg,

My bad, I just read that one post.

Skins Fans, don’t worry, the OL signings come tomorrow and this weekend, need to shore up that awful defense from a year ago.

    truefan2011,

Don’t even TRY to come on here and act like Cowboy fans (or any other fan for that matter) don’t have a platform for criticizing Snyder and his FA signings. Snyder has made the WORST mistakes with FA signings over any other owner in the league hands down. To name a few – Dana Stubblefield, Adam Archuletta, Deion Sanders, Albert Haynesworth – Check out all of those signings, the $ Snyder spent on bringing them all in, and then see how the players played and how long they stuck around in response to those huge contracts. It is well known that the Cowboys are cutting players to get under the cap, but don’t sit here and act like they are the only team doing it. It was time for Roy Williams to go. It was time for Davis to go. It was time for Barber to go. Their #1 goal was to re-sign Free, and they did it. Next, it was time to get a contract with G Kyle Kosier and Rookie OT Tyron Smith. They accomplished both. Bowen was a guy the Cowboys would like to have kept for his potential, NOT for his past production, and they would have gotten him for a cheap price had Snyder not paid what he did for him. Time will tell how he pans out, but that just opens the door for us to go after a FA DE, like Cullen Jenkins, and BELIEVE YOU ME, there is enough $ to sign him – that isn’t anything you have to worry about.

why no mention of the redskins getting CB Josh Wilson from Baltimore @ 3 years 13.5 mil???

probably the best signing we’ve made in years! best CB ravens had…

I don’t know if Redskins fans are lazy, stupid, or just beaten into submission by the reign of Danny the Midget, but the link was posted roughly 24 hours ago. Since I’m in a generous mood, I’ll post the link for you:

cutthajokes, that is what you get for thinking. I am not bitter at all, nor am I worried about the 4skins whatsoever. But as a division foe, I keep up with what Snyder and the team are doing. I will be the first to agree that the Roy Williams deal was horrible, and I didn’t like it one bit from the beginning. It is easy to say this after the fact, isn’t it? The Cowboys are going to be just fine with the cap, otherwise Free wouldn’t have gotten his sweet contract, one he will be well worth it. Unlike Bowen, Free proved himself ever since Flozell was cut, but you never hear anything about Free getting the credit he deserves, or JJ getting the credit he deserves for cutting Adams to allow Free to step in. It is only negative credit or no credit for JJ. Most disagreed with the move to cut Adams, but it worked out very well. BTW, you as the pot calling the kettle black just doesn’t work with regards to what I mentioned before in Fat Albert. You ask how Roy Williams worked out for us – you now have a dirty fat overrated DT leaving with 20 million of Synder’s (and the fans) $ for New England, and you are getting a 2013 5th round pick in return. WELL DONE.

    cutthajokes,

btw, asking about getting under the salary cap, you obviously don’t watch or listen to NFL network or ESPN. In addition to Roy Williams getting cut (5 million off the cap), did you hear about Leonard Davis (6 million off the cap), and Barber (4.75 million off the cap) and lastly Kris Brown ($910,000 off the cap) ALSO getting cut? Roughly 16.6 million right there, and they aren’t done. More cuts will be coming…..

Yes, this is why I don’t purchase merch from the Skins but just watch the games on “free TV.” I don’t want to give Snyder my money, until he produces a winner.

At the same time, I have been a fan for so many years, I have to root for them every year and if Snyder is willing to spend, I’m all for it. It’s not Snyder’s spending that is the problem, it is spending on the wrong guys (like Haynesworth). The big question is whether he’s learned his lesson and whether the football guys there are taking the reins effectively. In the end, it’s all message board banter. At the end of the year, everyone will have a W-L record and that will be the final word…

Redskins fanatic here. Yeah, yeah…insert joke here.

Not so sold on this move or the Carter pickup. Bowens may have been a sleeper FA this year but most of what I’ve seen on Carter is he’s a solid backup. Best I’ve seen on Bowen is he’s third on the Cowboys with 12 QB pressures & has 5.5 career sacks.

Any Skins have any positive input here?

Or why we backed off Jenkins?

  87. jsrdc says: Jul 28, 2011 6:35 PM

    revengeofthefilthymcnasty,

Sounds like you are a bit of a loner as a Redskin fan who is questioning this acquisition of Bowen, as a lot of other Skins fans who have posted on here have on the rose colored glasses. Bowen could be good. He is young, and has potential. I still think they gambled a good amount of money on him based on his stats that you so aptly pointed out. I think you backed off Jenkins to finally slow down the spending spree, and because they probably didn’t want to get into a bidding war.

  88. truefan2011 says: Jul 29, 2011 4:33 PM

hey jsr, I’m not acting like snyder hasn’t made mistakes in the past, every player that u listed was true they didn’t work out well, but the cowboys haven’t had the greatest FA or trade history either, how about Drew Bledsoe, Roy Williams, Pac Man Jones, and whoever JJ brings in to play safety or corner! but anyway, that wasn’t the point, the point is we currently have better cap management that your team, we are still have atleast 20 million to work with after all our rookie signings, what do yall have, a horrible secondary, pipe dreams of landing nnamdi, a center who just had knee surgery, a cut starting guard, tackle, and a rookie at RT, and barely any money to help your team, pray for romo’s other collarbone

  89. truefan2011 says: Jul 29, 2011 4:45 PM

and also jsrdc, yall were 18 million over the cap, all those cuts you name only =16 mil, that means yall are only making space from re-structuring romo, ware, and austin’s contracts, unless you cut more people, so even if u sign nnamdi, there’s no way u help the other positions, so in a way, I hope yall bring him in, and it keeps the cowgirls from making other improvements
