Sounds like you are a bit of a loner as a Redskin fan who is questioning this acquisition of Bowen, as a lot of other Skins fans who have posted on here have on the rose colored glasses. Bowen could be good. He is young, and has potential. I still think they gambled a good amount of money on him based on his stats that you so aptly pointed out. I think you backed off Jenkins to finally slow down the spending spree, and because they probably didn’t want to get into a bidding war.

Not so sold on this move or the Carter pickup. Bowens may have been a sleeper FA this year but most of what I’ve seen on Carter is he’s a solid backup. Best I’ve seen on Bowen is he’s third on the Cowboys with 12 QB pressures & has 5.5 career sacks.

Yes, this is why I don’t purchase merch from the Skins but just watch the games on “free TV.” I don’t want to give Snyder my money, until he produces a winner.

At the same time, I have been a fan for so many years, I have to root for them every year and if Snyder is willing to spend, I’m all for it. It’s not Snyder’s spending that is the problem, it is spending on the wrong guys (like Haynesworth). The big question is whether he’s learned his lesson and whether the football guys there are taking the reins effectively. In the end, it’s all message board banter. At the end of the year, everyone will have a W-L record and that will be the final word…

btw, asking about getting under the salary cap, you obviously don’t watch or listen to NFL network or ESPN. In addition to Roy Williams getting cut (5 million off the cap), did you hear about Leonard Davis (6 million off the cap), and Barber (4.75 million off the cap) and lastly Kris Brown ($910,000 off the cap) ALSO getting cut? Roughly 16.6 million right there, and they aren’t done. More cuts will be coming…..

Don’t even TRY to come on here and act like Cowboy fans (or any other fan for that matter) don’t have a platform for criticizing Snyder and his FA signings. Snyder has made the WORST mistakes with FA signings over any other owner in the league hands down. To name a few – Dana Stubblefield, Adam Archuletta, Deion Sanders, Albert Haynesworth – Check out all of those signings, the $ Snyder spent on bringing them all in, and then see how the players played and how long they stuck around in response to those huge contracts. It is well known that the Cowboys are cutting players to get under the cap, but don’t sit here and act like they are the only team doing it. It was time for Roy Williams to go. It was time for Davis to go. It was time for Barber to go. Their #1 goal was to re-sign Free, and they did it. Next, it was time to get a contract with G Kyle Kosier and Rookie OT Tyron Smith. They accomplished both. Bowen was a guy the Cowboys would like to have kept for his potential, NOT for his past production, and they would have gotten him for a cheap price had Snyder not paid what he did for him. Time will tell how he pans out, but that just opens the door for us to go after a FA DE, like Cullen Jenkins, and BELIEVE YOU ME, there is enough $ to sign him – that isn’t anything you have to worry about.

A real Redskins fan knows this team is far from contending for a Super Bowl, even making the playoffs is out of site.

Stop worrying about Bowen, he’s going to fit in nicely for us. Worry about what your team is going to do, and stop worry so much about what the Redskins are doing.

BUT, I did have to just take a little shot. It just seems like whenever the Redskins make a move, everyone rationalizes why it’s a stupid move.

Bottom line, Cowboys were targeting him to keep, and the Redskins outbid them. “Overpay” is a ridiculous argument. Redskins have avoided cap hell for years despite all predictions to the contrary. After that, it’s Snyder’s money, so why should I care. I’m glad they got a guy they think can contribute.

That said, yes, he has to show his worth now. The coming season will show it one way or the other.

12.5 million over 5 years guaranteed for a guy with 1.5 sacks last year.? “Bowen is only guaranteed 12.5 million over 5 years”. It isn’t a bad thing for Snyder who is used to overpaying for players. IF Bowen meets performance incentives, if the skins pay him anything close to that figure over the course of his contract….. There are a lot of ifs in your post. 2.5 million per year if he stayed all 5 years and performs commensurate with his pay ISN’T a bad deal. But what happens if he ends up only staying one or two years, and then gets cut, you do the math – 12.5 million guaranteed for only one year, or 6.25 million for 2 years in guaranteed $ that Snyder would have to eat. You are right when you say “some ppl just don’t have a clue to what is going on”. Only lasting one or two years is where the risk lies with this contract and you conveniently aren’t addressing this in your post, now are you?

Yes, he was supposed to be a starter for Dallas because we don’t currently have anybody better at DE – like S, it is absolutely a position of need. Like I said, I would have been fine with keeping him for his sleeper potential, but absolutely would have passed on matching what Snyder payed him, as he IS an unproven player with only 1.5 sacks last year. He was an UFA, so he had the option to test the market, and Snyder obviously paid him on potential, not on his results. He is a sleeper – and now we will all see if he stays asleep.
