Titans officially part ways with Vince Young

20101023_inq_eagl23z-a AP

The Titans had a couple of day to trade Vince Young and a $4.25 million roster bonus that would have come due on Friday.  They couldn’t trade him, so they’ve cut him.

As expected, the Titans have released Young, the third pick in the 2006 draft.

The Titans also have released defensive tackle Tony Brown, defensive lineman Kareem Brown, defensive end Marcus Howard, running back Dominique Lindsay, and guard Jeff Hansen.

The market is expected to be soft for Young.  But here’s how we (or at least I) see it.  There aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the league right now better than Young.  So he should be starting somewhere.

Look at Seattle.  The Seahawks have Charlie Whitehurst and Tarvaris Jackson.  Vince Young is better, more accomplished, and more experienced than them?

And if any NFL coach knows what Vince Young can do, it’s the guy whose hair got a little bit grayer while standing on the sidelines of the 2005 BCS national title game.

Make him a Bengal please. Give me something to semi-look forward to.

  2. t16rich says: Jul 28, 2011 4:29 PM

Colt McCoy. The Longhorns real qb. Vince was always a selfish punk.

  3. p4hbiz says: Jul 28, 2011 4:30 PM

He would be a good back-up to J. Campbell

  4. bryjord says: Jul 28, 2011 4:30 PM

Young is worth a chance, but I am not too sure there arent 32 better QBs. He is a headcase, and was also my favorite in that draft.

    It really is a shame.

  5. stillerfan82 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:30 PM

    Their loss….

  6. nyctexan says: Jul 28, 2011 4:31 PM

30-17 as a starter. The man deserves another shot.

  7. dcbassguy says: Jul 28, 2011 4:32 PM

VY to the Eagles….. The system switch may be just what he needs. He’s got the tools for the system, he just has to get his head right. Reid could work wonders with that big arm, and quick feet.

Mr. Ireland, time to make this deal happen for Miami!

  9. phil325 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:32 PM

Pleeze, the coach on the 2005 BCS title game is an a__hole. BUT Young is better than the alternatives he’s broght in.

  10. medtxpack says: Jul 28, 2011 4:34 PM

if VY ended up in Seattle, id be very weary if PC understands that this is the pros, you dont sign a new QB for every class like in college.

Vince Young might be a head case but all he does is WIN WIN WIN

Of course! They have to give Locker number 10 after all!

  15. eaglesfan290 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:36 PM

It’s really simple he can start on a horrible team or be a back-up on a very good team.

It’s all about what he wants.

  16. flphinatic says: Jul 28, 2011 4:37 PM

who could have possibly seen this coming :0

  17. platnumtoof says: Jul 28, 2011 4:37 PM

I’d welcome him to Seattle. It would be great to see him overcome his mental demons and be a great asset to the hawks. I’m all for it since he doesn’t cost a draft pick.

  18. centexhorn says: Jul 28, 2011 4:37 PM

I say he’s going to Oakland. Although, I find it hard to believe Seattle thinks they’ve got their guy in Tarvaris Jackson. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in Kansas City, reuniting with Jamaal Charles. As a back up, of course. He’s going to have to earn back a starting job, and I think he will, eventually.

  19. rodn3y1 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:39 PM

  22. TheDPR says: Jul 28, 2011 4:39 PM

  23. gooselife says: Jul 28, 2011 4:39 PM

Too bad the guy threatens suicide every time he gets criticized in the media. EFF VY. CJ made that team, not VY.

  24. ineptguy6 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:40 PM

VY is a turd. Never has done a thing in the pros. You can cite his record all you want, but it doesn’t mean a thing. That team won games for despite his mediocre at best performances. Put him on a team like the Seahawks or Bengals and watch him go 2-14.

  25. terrellblowens says: Jul 28, 2011 4:40 PM

Imagine a Vick-Vince Young Wildcat. Now that would be cool

  26. convertiblezones says: Jul 28, 2011 4:42 PM

he can start for several teams in the nfl he may not be a conventional qb but he is a winner

“There aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the league right now better than Young. So he should be starting somewhere.”

    False. You don’t want VY.

  28. showtime12 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:43 PM

VY will probably sign as a back up in Philly and get some playing time when Vick’s injured. Reid will resuscitate his career and then trade him for draft picks. If the Eagles can get DRC and a second round pick from the Cardinals for Kolb, imagine what they can turn a “new and improved” version of VY into. That former punt, pass, and kick competitor Reid is a genius!

  29. 2sloweggroll says: Jul 28, 2011 4:43 PM

Al Davis last reported hard-on was watching VY beat his Trojans in the BCS Championship game. VY is a Raider by the time this reply posts.

  31. jackfnburton says: Jul 28, 2011 4:44 PM

Yeah but who needs him flipping out and disappearing for two days the first time he throws a pick six? Someone will sign him, but start him? Not this year. I’d be shocked.

  32. andyreidisfat says: Jul 28, 2011 4:44 PM

The really smart thing for VY to do is go to Philly learn to play the position the right way from mike Vick …. Did I really just say that ?? My how times change. Or better my how Fat Andy makes QB’s.

Also would love to see Brown come play DT for his old line coach.

  33. readingrugby7 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:45 PM

Wrong. Look what Collins did with that same team. Dude is a headcase, but a winner nonetheless.

THEN, they could trade him in a few years, for a 2nd a 3rd and a quality player!!!!!!!!

    WELCOME TO PHILLY DOMINIQUE!!!!!!!!

  43. tinbender2000 says: Jul 28, 2011 4:55 PM

When you think that Arizona could have got him for nothing, it Really makes the Kolb deal look even worse.

  44. laeaglefan says: Jul 28, 2011 4:57 PM

He’s coming to Philly, to be mentored by Mike Vick.
Andy Reid likes quarterbacks who can scramble, since that’s a necessity with the Eagles’ porous offensive line.

  45. ironheadjr says: Jul 28, 2011 4:59 PM

Philly Eagles will pick him up…he can learn from Vick :)

  46. garkeith says: Jul 28, 2011 5:03 PM

  47. kappy32 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:10 PM

So glad my team has a stable QB. I wouldn’t want to have my team’s season dependent upon this guy’s mental state. He needs to go to a team where football is not the main sport in the city & where he will not be “offended” by the media when he’s called out for playing like sh*t.

  48. rodn3y1 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:10 PM

I love how all these people from random corners of the country who haven’t been very exposed to Vince Young act like they know all about him. All he does is win. He’s never been a loser in his life and people expect him to do it with grace? Well, he doesn’t. He hates losing. That’s not who he is.

  50. thefiesty1 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:14 PM

Stupid, stupid, stupid! Zona pays Kolb 61M for a 3-4 record as a starter and these teams are backing off of a 35-17 winner with a bad attitude. What’s wrong with these people when half their team is a head case? A lot of teams are making a HUGE mistake passing on VY.

  51. asublimeday says: Jul 28, 2011 5:16 PM

Jacksonville shouldn’t have drafted gabbart. VY sells tickets.

  52. tformation says: Jul 28, 2011 5:21 PM

Hope this experience has humbled VY. If not, it may take him a THIRD team to give him a chance before he actually mans up & seizes it.

Also, VY to Seattle makes sense… until you realize 16mil for 2 backup QBs? Really, Seattle?

VY to Miami means Kyle stays a Bronco this year. The QB carousel stops spinning when VY lands…

  53. NFLJunkie says: Jul 28, 2011 5:22 PM

Out of Young’s 30-17 record or whatever as a starter, he definitely made his share of positive game-changing plays in many/most of those wins, and sometimes outplayed his teammates in a few of the losses. He had horrible days too, but most QBs — especially young ones — do.

There are a lot of parallels with Michael Vick when you hear Vick admit now how he shortchanged the Falcons and didn’t put in the work like he should have and instead tried to coast on raw ability.

But honestly? Not sure Young will be as hungry after getting cut as Vick was after having things put in perspective by going to federal prison. Remember, Young is the guy who told an interviewer after his first or second season — when he hadn’t had his first high-profile meltdown yet– that he had already seriously considered walking away from the game.

There’s no way he should just be handed a starting job somewhere until he proves he is not that same guy anymore. Because he still was that guy in 2010.

  54. fifthorkid says: Jul 28, 2011 5:28 PM

Hello DC. Clearly a better option then Beck or Clemens

  55. shagsny says: Jul 28, 2011 5:29 PM

Send him to the Eagles… it would be interesting to see Vick and Young on the field at the same time… be a lot better than when they tried that experiment with Vick and McNabb.

  56. feldman9000 says: Jul 28, 2011 5:35 PM

Miami needs to bring Marino out of retirement, because it’s obvious at this point there’s no hope in finding a QB. How do you have only two competent QBs over 50 years?

  57. trbowman says: Jul 28, 2011 5:37 PM

“He would be a good back-up to J. Campbell”

He’s better than Jason Campbell. If the Raiders get him and give him a shot, he’d beat out Campbell.

VY is going to prove a lot of people wrong if he gets the opportunity this year.

LOL….You are definitely in the minority…I’m here in Nashville too………75% of the city says, Good Riddance! Vince, don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

  59. centexhorn says: Jul 28, 2011 5:57 PM

Why anyone would think VY wound want to play for Mike Shanahan (AKA Jeff Fisher’s clone) is beyond me. He’ll go anywhere but there.

  60. thetooloftools says: Jul 28, 2011 6:00 PM

Unless VY decides to grow the hell up, he’s always going to be waiting in the wings instead of getting the respect a starter deserves. He’s still trapped in that “Texas I’m the man” mentality.
    This is the pros Vince.
    Start sacking up.

Nobody’s backed off VY yet. They just played the Titans like a fiddle. The Titans put themselves in a horrible negotiating position when they didn’t trade VY after firing Fisher. Teams immediately knew they could pick up a 35-17 winner, with Rookie of year honors and 2 pro-bowls on the cheap. I doubt VY is still a head case. Those GMs know he’ll be humble with a huge chip on his shoulder and a mission to prove he is coachable.

He is faaaar better than Tony Romo in Dallas. JJ loves projects like this. The Big ‘D’ could be as lethal as Philly with Vick if Jason Garrette can grab VY, coach him up and light a match under Romo or dump him. They still have Kitna to bridge a transition to guy like VY. So I say look out Dallas. I bet Vince is back home before next Wednesday. And firing on all cylinders to prove everyone was wrong about him.

VY is also better than Kevin Kolb, Matt Schaub, Kyle Orton/Tim Tebow, Chad Henne, Mark Sanchez, Fitzgerald, David Garrard, Matt Cassel, Jason Campbell, Colt McCoy, Alex Smith, David Whitehurst/Leinart/T. Jackson, John Beck/Rex Grossman, Cincinnatti?, and Donovan McNabb.

So I say look for a team to jump on this guy early in a keep or trade scenario with JJ at Dallas. Because JJ has already expressed a “intrigued” interest in VY, just like he did with Mike Vick. No team wanted to part with what the Titans were asking. Meaning a top player and top draft picks. Especially when they knew the Titans were in a self inflicted hole. Mack Brown (Texas Coach) is probably already got VY in Dallas or Houston. I agree with Skip Bayless. This could end up being the story of the year in the NFL, just like M. Vick last year.

hopefully if coach carroll does pick up vy, he can bring out the better of him (a la big mike williams) . with tjax and chuckhearst as our only qbs, getting vy on the cheap wouldnt hurt to try. best case scenario, pete works his magic and he pans out and helps seattle win a few games. worse case he doesnt pan out, cut em n not have to worry about breaking the bank.

  64. nashvilletrojan says: Jul 28, 2011 6:43 PM

Nashville is an easy town for athletes. The media goes easy on them. They get multiple chances. We gave the benefit of the doubt (call it homerism) to Pacman, Tyrone Calico, Fat Al Haynesworth, Vince Young and now Kenny Britt. Eventually, their actions cause them to lose the fans support and their personal business will become public and ugly.

VY snapped in the sleepy little market of Nashville…..If VY can go and succeed in a place like Philly, NY or DC with their rabid fans, I would be shocked.

  65. blackqbwhiterb says: Jul 28, 2011 6:45 PM
