Eagles land Nnamdi Asomugha

dal_g_nasomugha1_288 Getty Images

The Eagles, moments ago, sent out a text message that will cause jaws to drop from sea to shining sea.

The Eagles have signed cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the deal is worth $60 million over five years, with $25 million guaranteed.

It’s not all that much richer of a deal than the one signed on the first day of free agency by cornerback Asante Samuel, who received a five-year, $57 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

And it’s a far cry from the contract that defensive end Charles Johnson will sign with the Panthers:  Six-year, $76 million, $32 million guaranteed.

As to Samuel, the move could mean that he’s available, given that the Eagles just acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on Thursday from the Cardinals.  (Indeed, Samuel has not yet reported to camp, excused due to a personal reason.)  Or maybe DRC could be on the move again, after serving the purpose of providing Philly with cover as they fooled everyone by pursuing Nnamdi in complete secrecy.

The EAGLES are going to have a scary defense!!!! Might as well pencil them in for the SB, my question now is where does Asante Samuel fit in this equation? DRC is a LCB amd Nnamdi is strictly a RCB.

  93. nyoon says: Jul 29, 2011 6:32 PM

So a mystery team from Philly swooped in and signed the best free agent who was either going to go to a star-studded New York team or a cash-strapped Dallas team. This hasn’t happened since last year.

  94. macjacmccoy says: Jul 29, 2011 6:32 PM

Everyone 1 says Asante is gone now… not so fast. Atleast not yet. The Eagles want a Superbowl keeping Asante as the 2 n DRC as the Nickel helps you get to that Superbowl.

  99. goodell2hell says: Jul 29, 2011 6:33 PM

No need to have that much money invested in cornerbacks

  100. marinofreakout says: Jul 29, 2011 6:34 PM

eat it with a fork jet fans, cant blame nnamdi for not being as dilirious as you guys are when it comes to the jets’ chances of actually winning the big one.

  101. xinellum says: Jul 29, 2011 6:34 PM

Just said on the other Jrts article about Nnamdi to stay tuned that the rumor mill was turning and the teams ee thought we in the race, proved not to be. The Eagles. Holy smoke, they are ramping up. How come everyone has the same salary cap and my Ravens haven’t acquired anyone and are complaining the only have 4 mil cap space after freeing 18 mil

  102. cincinnasti says: Jul 29, 2011 6:34 PM

Nnamdi, Rodgers-Cromartie, and Asante Samuel… Eli, Tony, and Johnny are going to have fun trying to get one over on them boys..

  110. milesrunner262 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:35 PM

Would have liked him in Dallas but not 100% sure they were ever really in the “sweepstakes”. Maybe they were, but they don’t have the cap space to even come close without creating even more holes on defense. They have too many other needs. Sucks he is in the division for sure!!

  111. nineroutsider says: Jul 29, 2011 6:35 PM

Eagles are locked and loaded to win a Super Bowl this year, whereas my Niners have their eyes set on the Toilet Bowl this year which, coincidentally, is where I will have my head immediately following their games.

Who am I kidding though, the Eagles will never win the Bowl, it’s their curse and destiny. My Giants will take care of those overrated Phillies.

Hope this offseasons lack of moves doesn’t turn out like last years offseason where the Cowboys went 13-3 got bounced by Min. And thought that they didn’t have to make moves to stay in contention. Seen how that worked out . Grow a pair Cowboys!

  127. andyr2120 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:38 PM

As a Raiders fan, I have to question whether that is more money than he is worth. We’ve been paying him tons and tons of money over the last few years. While he is very good and he suits the Raiders D perfectly, you’d like to think that he’d snag a few more INTs or force the other team into difficult situations more often. Anyway, he is a hell of a good guy and I wish him luck!

  128. quizguy66 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:38 PM

  136. My Last Victim Escaped says: Jul 29, 2011 6:40 PM

Im sure Nnamdi chose the Eagles because he’s tired of losing. Yes, the Raiders is on the upswing but he prob dont want another letdown. But if he thinks the Eagles gonna win a SB, he has to look at history… the last 6 or 7 SB champions DID NOT load up on talent for a run.

  137. asarabi says: Jul 29, 2011 6:40 PM

Can they give one of their other two CB’s to Buffalo? Samuel for Maybin straight up. What say you Philly?

  138. gothwolf says: Jul 29, 2011 6:41 PM

Way to go Niners. So low below the cap and a HUGE need for cornerback. And he wouldn’t even need to move. Couldn’t manage it. Somebody we’ll have a real GM…..I suppose right after we get real owners.

    ——-

You can’t make INTs if the other team NEVER throws the ball towards you. I remember reading some ridiculous stat like he was only thrown at something like 14 times all year. I don’t know where to look that stat up, but if they don’t throw at you, you can’t catch the ball.

Reasons why Asante Samuel will be a Panther.

    3 thoughts on this signing

    1. The Cowboys have to be disappointed they didn’t sign him, but whats even worse is he is now in their division.

    2. DeSean Jackson has to be pissed. The Eagles say they have no money to pay him, but then they just come out of nowhere and give Nnandi a contract worth half the national debt.

    3. Even with the best secondary in the NFL the Eagles still wont win the Super Bowl. Andy Reid will find some way to screw it up.

  164. tooz56 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:53 PM

  167. weneedlinemen42 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:55 PM

Not sure why so many people are keen on trading DRC away now.

He is essentially a free gift. The Kolb trade was rediculous, DRC on top of a second round pick! Even if they don’t sign DRC to an extension and lost his services after a year, they still would have come out massively on top on that trade. So, why not keep all 3 corners on the roster for one season and go all out for the Super Bowl.

Vick isn’t getting any younger, and his style will ultimately result in a shorter career than a prototypical pocket passer. So I would not trade DRC away for a draft pick. The future is now for Philly. They’ve got an opportunity to go all the way this year. I think they should go all out for it and that’s speaking as a Redskins fan.

Things got pretty ugly for us last year against the Eagles. I wasn’t looking forward to two games against a secondary including DRC and Samuel. Add in Asomugha and I think I might just stay in bed for those two weeks.

  168. teal379 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:55 PM

A little out of left field, didn’t think the Eagles were going that way. Good pick up if you can get him like that.

I’d hold onto the “Eagles win the next 5 superbowls” talk.

You have 2 good corners but have spent a ton of money. Cap WILL come to play eventually. Your LB corps is still soft, Vick hasn’t shown he can play all 16 and I don’t care what you say VY isn’t gonna back him up to the same level. You still need to sign Jackson and Macklin. There’s more cap space eaten up.

You still have to cover the Packers’ wide outs. Driver, Jordy, Finley, Cobb, Starks outta the back field… That’s more than 2 CB’s worth of real threats.

2 good corners is a start but last I checked – no CB has ever led a team to the SB. Will be fun to watch though.

I love how Iggles fans think this means they’re FINALLY going to win something.

Until you address the REST of your secondary, you know, because you can’t play man all the time — with that weak interior defensive line and no consistent LBs remaining — your safeties are gonna get torched all year.

I’m failing to see why this is a smart move, regardless of the fact that I am a Giants fan.

It doesn’t make them better. When we knock Vick out in Week 3, where will the wisdom be in this, then?

Really liked Bradley when healthy, but that’s the problem. too many injuries. As for safety, here’s an interesting thought: If they choose to keep Asante, what about setting him free to be the pure ballhawk he loves to be. Use him as freelancing free safety like Ed Reed for Ravens or Darren Sharper during the Saints SB run? Might seem like a waste of money given his salary, but Asante freed up completely to jump routes could be dangerous indeed.

Even with Vick at franchise tag numbers (which will drop once they work out a long term deal) Eagles were well under the salary cap. On top of that, they opted to let all of their FAs go (Bradley, Mikkel, and Weaver being the most notable). They got DRC on an existing contract. That’s how they have the money for these moves, and to sign DeSean to an extension.

  191. Matt says: Jul 29, 2011 7:11 PM

2 huge Raider pains for me.

    1) Al Davis, and all of Raider Nation, thought he was going to demand 15-20 mil per year. That’s why we paid Routt this much, to be our starter. If we had known Nnamdi only wanted 12 mil guaranteed per year, we would have spent that money on Nnamdi. Nobody saw this coming. He really isn’t in it for the money. Class act.

    2) Of all the “winning” teams that he was rumored to join, I wanted to see Nnamdi either go to Green Bay or the Jets. Nnamdi + C Wood or Nnamdi + Revis would have been beautiful football, regardless of the logo on the helmet. I don’t think Nnamdi picked the best organization in this sweepstakes, or the best team. I’ll feel bad for him every year that Philly falls short of the big game.

  192. tdk24 says: Jul 29, 2011 7:12 PM

Wow, that is too much for any CB. I liked ya Nnam, but now we can get more talent with all that money we saved by not trying to keep you. We don’t need one great player, we need lot’s of really good players. Now we just groom Routt over the next couple of years and he will follow your suit, just like you followed Woodson’s suit. Just wish we could groom QB’s like we do CB’s.

  193. sah0620 says: Jul 29, 2011 7:14 PM

LOL at all the Eagles fans that think they should just hand the Lombardi Trophy to them for signing a bunch of overpriced free agents along with a few scrubs. weneedlinemen42 – Pick your head up. The Eagles can have 5 Nnamdis and Plax will still torch them. The Eagles signed Nnamdi out of desperation b/c they know once the G-Men sign Plax (and Vonta Leach), they’re screwed.

A bad team like the Raiders need more than a novelty CB that they can brag about. Hopefully they put the money they’re saving to good use. As a Raider fan, I can say that having #21 shut down half the field never got them into the playoffs. I’ve always thought paying him as much as they were was idiotic with their circumstances.

yeah, things can change quickly throughout the season, but right now you have to figure the Packers and the Eagles are the NFC favorites right now at least. Both teams have explosive offenses, and look to have strong defenses as well. The big question for both will be how their O-lines hold up. O-line injuries have been a problem for my Eagles in the past, and with Tauscher and Collydge now gone, the Packers have little room for issues there. BHahaa I love how Nnamdi pulled a Cliff Lee on New York.

Super Bowl Favorites have to be Eagles and Patriots. They play Week 12. I’m going say that might be the highest rated regular season game of the year.

Now I hope Cromartie tells the Jets to stick it, and goes to Dallas

  223. kevpft says: Jul 29, 2011 8:37 PM

Well, this will certainly help keep the Eagles in games after Vick gets injured in the first few weeks of the season.

It’s an interesting move. No question NA is a great player, but they’re adding him to what is already a strong position. So unlike with, say, Dallas, who would be getting probably a 98% improvement at the position, the Eagles will be getting, what? A 30% improvement over what they already had, especially with the Kolb trade? Maybe even less than that.

All that for a $60 mil hit to your salary cap. And, as yet, no solid backup for Vick.

It’s more of a risk than it appears at first glance. He will likely wreak havoc against Manning & Romo, but he’s not going to be enough on his own. No one is.

The jealousy in these posts are straight up comical!!! All of you can continue to make up excuses to make yourselves feel better, but the bottom line is the Eagles just got A WHOLE LOT scarier! All you Cowboys and Giants fan keep telling yourselves that this move means nothing, and the Eagles aren’t any better because of this move, and that the Eagles paid way too much (when in actuality we got a great deal for his talents).

We all know that your just hiding behind your real feelings which are fear and anger that your teams have literally done nothing this off-season to keep pace with the Eagles! Last year the Eagles were the best team in the division, so explain to me how signing Babin, Nnamdi, and Young and trading for DRC doesn’t make us even better, while other teams in the division have been sitting on there hands and losing players instead of adding them. Good luck trying to keep pace……

Who says they have the best secondary in the NFL? LMFAO that’s hilarious. They just gave up their most dependable safety. They’re still going to get torched. And to the clown who thinks Giants fans are nervous, your defense isn’t what stopped us last year, we shot ourselves in the foot. You are no better until your defensive line is on par with ours. Then we’ll be nervous. Quit trying to make us think an empty championship display is something to be fearful of. No one gets awards for preseason games and offseason signings.

  238. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:23 PM

If I were king of the world for a day, the first thing I would do is make it illegal for people to say “we” when referring to the team they root for.

This delusion of participation, or the idea that you somehow have something to do with what happens with team that you root for, is completely exclusive to team sports.

Think about the other things you are a fan of. Do you ever say after watching an episode of your favorite TV show, “boy, WE sure did put together a great program tonight!”?

Do me a favor, Mr. (or Ms.) “We”. Drive up to the facilities of the team you root for and try to get in the front door. Wear your jersey. See how far you get.

  248. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jul 30, 2011 2:33 AM

I spoke the truth and it’s blowin’ yours. Tough duty, but better to have the reality now than in December.

And to this self-righteous prick above me, if it bothers you that much, go enter a thumb wrestling competition with your wife, since the “we” usage bothers you here.

the iggles will choke once again, despite the signing of this overrated cb asomugha. with no expectations the cowboys will win the nfc east. mike vick will not hold up the entire season, and the iggles expect vince young to do the trick, please. asomugha could not cover any of the cowboys receivers when the raiders played the cowboys in 2009 thanks giving game, the tape do not lie. the expectations is now andy reid to produce or else. the media, fans of the iggels now expect super bowl or bust. it will be bust. the reason why the cowboys will win the nfc east when there is no expectations, the cowboys do more than expected, especially coming off a 6-10 record. jason garrett and rob ryan will hav the cowboys ready when the whistle blows, guaranteed. i predict their will b 3 teams in the andrew luck sweepstakes, the redskins, the bills and the seahawks, let’s b realistic do shanahan truly believe that john beck can win more than 6 games for the redskins, and chan gailey got luck last year when fitzpatrick won, now he has typen to back up and the mess in seattle, no qb per se. romo will have a breakout year this year with a revamp offensive line and soild receivers and a shafty running game, espect the cowboys to be 12-4, this season and to represent the nfc in indy in 2012, romo will finally show the rest of the nfl the leader his is and will finally get that danny white perception off his back.

  250. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jul 30, 2011 2:54 AM

While I believe Dallas will continue to build upon how they finished the season last year, they’ve shed a bit too much talent and haven’t taken care of the main thing that got them beat so frequently last year defensively — THEIR SECONDARY.

The plain and simple fact is, as long as the Giants are healthy and knowing that the anomaly that was last year’s turnover number will not happen again — that it is their division to lose. I haven’t seen 7 objective posts about how these signings affect the NFC East race, just a bunch of blind homers.

  251. bigbadjohneaglesnm says: Jul 30, 2011 3:00 AM

FIRST THINGS FIRST…. hahahahahahahs to jets, cowboys, giants, skins!!!! NOW , packers fans, last year with 1 cb we gave you all you could handle. Asante if you remember was coming off injury not 100 percent. Eagles were about to win if not for an ill-advised throw late in the 4th qrt. So don’t go running yer mouths like you dominated the birds cuz it didn’t happen. You won the superbowl yes you did but that very well could have been the eagles. Rodgers did light up joselio Hanson and dimitri Patterson. That won’t happen to nnamdi and DRC, eliminate the receiver on nnamdi’s side of the field, risk throwing a pick towards Asante. Omg that eliminated Aaron Rodgers. Go ahead n say that the pack still has the same team as last year that’s true, but the eagles were as good as the pack last year but we are a whole hell of alot better this year!! Hate all you want the EAGLES are the team to beat! You can hate the birds cuz yer scared, or respect the birds cuz yer scared, either way yer still scared!!!

I haven’t seen 7 objective posts about how these signings affect the NFC East race, just a bunch of blind homers.

    Mr. Wright aka “Winky”

What do you consider objective? Facts?

Very well. The Eagles have beaten the Giants in SIX STRAIGHT GAMES . It could be seven, if you include the playoffs. That’s not luck, nor a trend. That’s dominance.

Going into the last game the two teams played, the Giants won three straight and allowed a total of 10 pts in the last two games of that winning streak.

The Giants (as we all know) had the lead in the 4th quarter in both contests last year and end up losing both games, the second one in absolutely spectacular fashion. As you babble on about turnovers, there wasn’t a SINGLE turnover committed by the Giants in the fourth quarter, where they allowed 21 pts in the final 8:17 (or do you need to be reminded of that…..I think you do…)

In fact, the only turnover committed in that quarter was by the EAGLES, which lead to the Giants final points of the day (see, turnovers work both ways, Slappy)

Turnovers are a part of the game, Winky. It’s the single most variable factor in determining wins and losses. Either teams are committing them or forcing them (that’s why they are measured in a RATIO….see…I knew you could follow along)

These signings only reinforce the fact of which the rest of the division already knows: They are already the defending division champions and have added FOUR Pro Bowl players on defense. FOUR.

Please save your diatribes for someone who actually can stand you. The Giants have made it clear that they are not only talent deficient, but mentally deficient as well, to beat the Eagles.

Don’t go away mad, Winky. Just go away.
