Five teams on the trail of Vonta Leach

Though the Texans are trying to shore up a defense that was almost bad enough to get everyone fired in 2010, they’ve got a fairly important guy on offense whom they would like to keep.

Fullback Vonta Leach.

They’re trying to re-sign the free agent, but other teams are involved.  According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston, the Cowboys, Ravens, Broncos, and Giants are in the mix, too.

Leach’s agent, Ralph Vitolo, would name no team beyond the Texans.  “There are multiple teams expressing interest in Vonta,” Vitolo told Berman.  “We are still hopeful Vonta can return to the Texans, if at all possible.”

The seven-year veteran was a first-time Pro Bowler and a first-time All Pro in 2010, thanks to his efforts to pave the way for tailback Arian Foster, the NFL rushing champion last season.

  1. Boy oh boy, if the Ravens were to sign him you can pretty much bet on Ray Rice having a monster season.

I still can’t believe this guy was in the NFL’s top 100 Players of 2010. A FB out of all the people left off of it.”

Suddenly these comment sections are full of people who obviously know nothing about football.

  3. Lets make it happen Cowboys, and leave nnamdi alone to many other areas of need to fix but FB Would be nice upgrade, as i remember it was the FB we had last yr fault why Romo and Dez Was put out of commission cause his dumb ass missed blocks!!!

  4. He would be a smash hit on the Giants… especially with tough runners like Bradshaw and especially Jacobs behind him. He’d love our run-oriented offense. I would imagine Baltimore would also be a great fit for him.

  5. How hard is it to run through a hole and hit someone? The guy catches like three balls a season. Man let him walk.. James Casey is waiting to take his place and the dude is made out of stone. Texans the real deal this year hhhhooooeeeeessssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Everyone should keep in mind that Vonta came from an Alex Gibbs-designed zone blocking scheme here in Houston. The offensive lines elsewhere are not going to open the same holes.

That aside, Vonta is still a fantastic pass blocker, very soft hands for a FB, and is vocal in the locker room. I don’t want to lose him.

  7. C’mon Panthers, spend more of that “drunken sailor money” on this guy…we haven’t been the same since Hoover left

  8. We have the best run defense in the nfl and nobody can say otherwise. And our defense would run rite threw him just like everyone else. Our pass blows but no one can deny u dnt run on the pittsburgh steelers hahahahahahaha

  9. Many people seem to have forgotten Vonta Leach was an undrafted free agent signed by the Packers, where he spent his first two years in the league.

So is it a fair trade, Tramon Williams for Vonta Leach? Who would you rather have on your team, Pro-Bowler CB Tramon Williams (thumbs up) or Pro-Bowler FB Vonta Leach (thumbs down)?

Dude, do you even WATCH football? This guy was a beast last year! C’mon, Broncos, make a play for this guy!

  11. I’d like to get him with the Ravens, but history says we’ll pick up a dude for cheap or draft a guy, he’ll become a beast then go on to big money somewhere else. McKie is still on the roster, so FB isn’t a major need right now. Get me a Tall WR first please!

  12. Denver would love this guy. We have not had a real fullback in years! He would be a key part in returning a once proud run game. Leading the way for Knowshawn, McGahee, and Tebow. Broncos need to have a awesome run game if they hope to compete in run heavy AFC west.

  13. Come on Rick Smith. Get it done. The Texans’ offensive players want him back. Frankly, that’s all the offense wants/needs. We’ve added about a dozen new defensive players through free agency and the draft. How about re-signing the freaking fullback? Is that too much to ask?

  14. I Would love to have him in Dallas, also. Gronkowski, unlike his Brother in NE, SUCKS. His missed assignment allowed Romo’s collarbone injury. Leach would be a nice fit. Houston may have a bit of a problem paying him now that they have Joseph and Manning on their team.

  15. God, you steelers fans are so obnoxious and stupid. “our defense would run rite threw him.” Apparently, your third grade spelling and grammar class ran right through your peanut brain.

What does this have to do with anything? Leach is the best free agent fullback on the market, and Tramon is under contract with the Pack. This article is about teams looking for fullback help.

No, he, like the rest of us, are tired of Steeler’s fans being unable to use grammar and punctuation like a normal, functioning human and not some slobbering beast whose only hightlight in their life is their sports teams.

Seeing a lot of Pirates fans come out of the woodwork. Where have you all been in the last 30 years? Hardcore fans for sure…

  18. garafolo is saying that the giants actually have no interest in leach. i guess they are going with the tandem of bear pascoe and UDFA hynoski.

  19. Not sure what Tramon Williams has to do with this.

In 2006 the Packers cut Leach to make room for Koren Robinson. The Saints picked him up to pump him for info for their game with the Packers that year and then cut him.

Houston picked him up a few weeks later, probably due to Mike Sherman liking him. Sherman had been fired the prior season by the Packers.

If the Pack had it to do all over again, guessing they would have cut one of their mediocre TE’s and dealt with the Favre hissy fit over it.

  20. Wow the cowgirls have always been my most hated team but with all these obnoxious steeler fans……….

  21. For those questioning the importance of a fullback, take a look at LT’s numbers with and without Lorenzo Neal.

  22. Is there a position in football that has a bigger gulf between popularity with fans and size of paycheck than a fullback?

Everyone who loves football loves these guys. I hope this guy gets every penny he deserves and then some.

  23. MN could really use him, but then again, we dont like to go after players with any worth, i.e. favre, mcnabb, lewis, wade and on and on…

  24. @steelers4385

I am a lifelong Steelers fan and dislike Ravens and Pats fans a lot but I would much rather sit on a bus for 10 hours and discuss football with them than be on it with you and have you screaming stupid crap into my ear about how great the Steelers are just because they are the Steelers and bringing up stupid points like last year’s rushing yards per game against totals. I have second hand embarassement from your lack of knowledge

Leave it to the fair weather fan from Philly to make such a remedial comment.
You, like your entire organization, don’t know true football, and can’t win – on this blog board or on the field.

  26. He was washed up when he couldn’t make the Packers team years ago. Suprised he is still in the league.

The NFL should contract back to 28 teams in 4 divisions and 2 conferences. Dump the Bengals, Browns, Jaguars and vikings.

It would also eventually get rid of over 200 of the worst players in the NFL and increase the quality of the game.

Vonta Leach is looking for work again and I can’t believe that there is such low quality players out there that Vonta Leach could make an NFL team.
