Report: Jets vs. Cowboys for Nnamdi

New York Jets v Cleveland Browns Getty Images

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has yet to pick a new team.  But another team has opted out of the chase.

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network reports that it’s down to Ryan vs. Ryan.

Cowboys versus Jets.

Rex Ryan, as anyone who follows football knows, coaches the Jets.  Rob Ryan is the first-year defensive coordinator in Dallas.

Per Lombardi, the 49ers have bailed out.  The Texans bailed when they signed Johnathan Joseph.  We’ve reported that the Bucs were never it, contrary to reports elsewhere.

We caught wind last night of talk that the Cowboys may jump into this thing.  Apparently, they have, with both feet.

Either way, it looks like Asomugha will be on NBC in primetime on Sunday night, September 11.  The only question is whether he’ll be wearing a silver helmet, or a white one.

Well then he’s going to the Jets as the Cowboys never win anything

  2. zoxitic says: Jul 29, 2011 10:56 AM

    C’mon Cowboys! Step it up.

    Signed,

    An AFC fan

Nnamdi the question is do you really want to pursue an acting career in 4 yrs. or do you want to be a poser in Cadillac commercials in Plano?

  4. dequan81 says: Jul 29, 2011 10:57 AM

Love the Boys, but can’t see them pulling this off.

  5. Andre's Johnson says: Jul 29, 2011 10:57 AM

Good God, I can’t believe I’m about to say this.

    But…

I hope the Cowboys get him.

    I have to bathe now.

  6. typhilly21 says: Jul 29, 2011 10:59 AM

If the cowboys sign Nnamdi they still have 0 NFL starter quality safeties or DEs. Jerry needs to give up control. That man doesnt kno What he’s doin. names don’t win titles

  7. nflofficeadmin says: Jul 29, 2011 10:59 AM

Rob is the beta Ryan. What does that tell you?

  8. austskate says: Jul 29, 2011 10:59 AM

He’s going to the Jets. This is more nonsense from Nnamdi’s agent driving up the price. Why would Cowboys all of a sudden jump in? Every time someone reports a team drops out of the race, another “interested” team apparently jumps in. Just sign with the Jets already so I can get on with my day and stop refreshing my twitter every 2 minutes.

  9. encinitasraider says: Jul 29, 2011 10:59 AM

both teams QB’s are known to read Playgirl

  10. kappy32 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:00 AM

And what have the Jets won? For both their AFC Championship appearances, they don’t even have a division title. It’s nice to win a couple games in the playoffs, but it means nothing when you have no hardware to show. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

  11. patswhatsup says: Jul 29, 2011 11:00 AM

I would say lets go cowboys, because I’m a pats fan, but then I realized, Nnamdi covers ocho, Revis covers branch or welker (something like this) and who covers 6’4″ Monster tight end gronkowski? Nobody can, lol

    Go Pats WOOOO!

  12. alphaq2 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:01 AM

As a Skins fan this sucks. Taxes are rediculously expensive in New York compared to Texas. If Nnamdi is looking for a payday he will choose Dallas.

  13. mad5555 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:01 AM

do you want to go to laughingstock 1 (cowgirls) or 1A(Jets, we are going to win tecmo superbowl)

  14. ginop7690 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:01 AM

Edge going to Jets in my opinion say what you want about the Jets failing to win a superbowl the boys failed to win PLAYOFF GAMES! My money is on the Jets just too perfect a situation

  15. terrellblowens says: Jul 29, 2011 11:02 AM

This is the most depressing new I have heard all day. The two most hate teams in the league? Just go back to Oakland, Nnamdi.

  16. elgaffo says: Jul 29, 2011 11:03 AM

to see him go to the cowboys would be a great waste of talent

  17. FinFan68 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:03 AM

Cowboys should get him if they have the cap room. It is not really a smart move for the jets to sign him and tie up a huge percentage of their salary cap on 1 position. Cromartie is the smart option for them. The Cowboys secondary needs help and Nnamdi is a good fit. As for the acting thing, worry about that crap after you are done with football.

  18. dcryan82 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:04 AM

C’mon Jerry.. Do somethin positive for the game and sign Nnamdi. Get him out of the AFC.

  19. jw731 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:04 AM

It’s like a game show…….Choose where to go……As it will be same as being with the Raiders……….Unless they convert him to QB

  20. dumbasdirt says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

No state income taxes in Texas.

Brutal state and local taxes in New York/New Jersey

Let’s see which one he chooses.

  21. darksidecowboy says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

One thing about Jerry Jones, if he wants something he usually gets it! The cowboys have needs on defense and CB is one of them. They haven’t made a splash yet, besides resigning the o-line, you know JJ has to do something. Plus players love the idea of wearing the star, get em’ boys!

  22. stunzeed5 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

Let’s see: little D or the BIG apple; freakin’ New York City.

    Easy choice: NYC

Terence Newman is hoping for it though, that way HE doesn’t have to get burnt by Santana Moss anymore.

  23. ninerdynasty says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

arent the cowboys like 13 mil over the cap? thats a big paycheck to make room for..

  24. bwisnasky says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

Still bet he’s on primetime on Monday Sept 12th wearing a silver helmet

  25. sfwillis52 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:05 AM

so…the Niners cut Clements, let the Texans sign Joseph, and now they don’t want Asomugha. I see great things coming from our secondary…sigh

  27. chazzgoodtimes says: Jul 29, 2011 11:06 AM

  29. narutofan10 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:07 AM

i would say he goes to the cowboys a lot more recognition even with rex ryan saying this and that the cowboys are still talked about more hell they had a 6-10 season and most of you people still can’t stop talking about and hating them LOL the jets should just let go they can not outbid jerry

  30. snnyjcbs says: Jul 29, 2011 11:08 AM

I will take that to the Bank, he was dead on regarding the Houston lol

  31. anactualnflowner says: Jul 29, 2011 11:08 AM

I don’t want to see Nnamdi’s talent go to waste yet again, by opposing quarterbacks instead choosing to light up the other half of the Cowboys secondary. If it’s between those two then I would rather him go to the Jets. However I hope that the Jets are not successful, because I hate the thought of teams buying success.

  32. vjjets says: Jul 29, 2011 11:08 AM

Diehard jets fan but if Nnamdi wants to play it out and wait for someone else let’s us know cause we don’t need you to make it anywhere. Plus you know rob can’t do what Rex can for you it’s proven.

  37. stealthhawk says: Jul 29, 2011 11:10 AM

This is the third different Jets vs Team scenario from Lombardi…

  40. baddegg says: Jul 29, 2011 11:12 AM

Funny, every poster on here thinks they understand football and crows how the Redskins just overpay for free agents. But look at what the Redskins are doing — bringing in a larger number of younger guys at reasonable prices (have to look at guaranteed money guys…not the overall figure) and avoiding the battles for Jenkins, Orton, and Asomugha.

It is telling they are not in this race. You guys may just have to adjust your schtick.

  41. whynotusecommonsense says: Jul 29, 2011 11:13 AM

Isn’t Lombardi the one who said Houston was in the lead yesterday. Guy’s a joke and a failed GM who was fired from a volunteer gig with Denver.

Nnamdi will be wearing a Silver helmet, but not with a star and not on Sunday night September 11th. It’ll be on Monday night September 12th.

  42. amurrcazteam says: Jul 29, 2011 11:13 AM

    GET’EM BIG D!!!!

  43. weneedlinemen42 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:15 AM

I am not a Jets fan, but I’d be curious to set a Rex Ryan defence with Asomugha and Revis. The blitz packages could get pretty interesting with those two available for coverage.

That said, there have been other great corner back duos and the great defences tend of be defined by their ability to rush the QB, not cover the receivers. I don’t think the Jets should break the bank to sign Asomugha. He will improve their team, but I don’t think he’ll transform it.

Signing Cullen Jenkins and Cromartie would probably have more impact, and probably come in at similar price to signing Asomugha, especially if Jerry Jones makes a big push.

  44. steelers4385 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:16 AM

I hate the Jets more than any team in the NFL. They are a disgrace to the NFL. All a bunch of show boaters. They are the oldest team in the NFL, and they just want to buy their way to a superbowl. If there was a steaming pile of gorrilla crap that smelled like it had been baking in the African sun for 2 weeks, and had mold growning out the sides, i would still route for that pile of crap over the Jets.

  45. varaider says: Jul 29, 2011 11:16 AM

Its almost hilarious how every one keeps leaving out the RAIDERS, as if Aso has no love for the team he’s played for the last 8 years… The same team with Hall of Fame coaches that made him arguably the best CB in the league… The same team that made him the highest paid CB in history… The same team that resides in his home state where he has multiple charity organizations….

Yea, lets not even mention the Raiders, who by the way have more cap space than the Cowboys and Jets COMBINED…. yea, don’t even mention the Raiders, lol

  46. dallasux says: Jul 29, 2011 11:18 AM

  47. theysone says: Jul 29, 2011 11:18 AM

Trent Baalke, or more appropriately Balky has had a remarkable off-season thus far. Starting center is now with the Giants, starting ILB is now with the Chargers, cut a starting CB, star RB is holding out, starting NT isn’t going to be resigned, starting FS has not been resigned, and he hasn’t landed any of the free agents out there that would have filled these holes. Guess he was too busy focusing on a kicker to replace the retiring Joe Nedney. Bravo Balky, bravo.

  48. fcs34 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:18 AM

So if the Jets sign Nnamdi I guess Revis gets a big raise right? Cause I can’t see him happy being the second highest CB on that team, especially after he held out.

  49. fordboy183 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:18 AM

The Jet hate really cracks me up. So many jealous fans of teams not willing to do what it takes to get to the super bowl. The rest of the AFC better pray Nmandi goes to Dallas, but more than likely he’ll sign with the Jets, and then they might as well just give us the trophy, case closed.

  50. melonnhead says: Jul 29, 2011 11:18 AM

I’m with you…Radiers could very well keep him and I hope they do (unless the Niners sneak in there). Some team has to put Bay Area football map on the map besides Stanford.

  64. islandrevis says: Jul 29, 2011 11:26 AM

  65. tumtum1288 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:27 AM

It makes sense to come to the cowboys. We pay well, he’ll be an instant star with a huge star on his helmet, and there’s more ex-cowboys in broadcasting than any other team. Check that up. Jerry Jones has connections. Plus we have his old coach, all signs point to cowboys. Make it happen Jerry

  66. Tim says: Jul 29, 2011 11:27 AM

If he goes to Dallas, the NFC East would be absolutely STACKED with quality CBs

  67. melonnhead says: Jul 29, 2011 11:28 AM

Asomugha should consider that any contract offer from the JEST should be at least 20% more than the Cowboys offer to be considered equitable because of NY’s state income tax that is causing rich folks to flee the state like their wallets are on fire. Plus the fact that he’d be surrounded by sushi-eating liberal weenies in NY. Not to mention the fact that the JEST are the “little brother” team to the Giants.

  68. grbigblue says: Jul 29, 2011 11:29 AM

More effective if he goes to the Jets. NFC East receivers will still torch dallas. Especially if GMEN land plax. Nicks, Mario, Plax, Smith choose your poison.

Not only do i not think the jets are the favorites to win the superbowl Nnamdi or not, I dont even think they are the favorites to win their division. The Patriots will once again win the AFC east because the Jets have zero offense. And guess what the pats main weapons on offense are tight ends. Who on the jets is going to cover them? Also after the jets spend 15 mill on Nnamdi who are they going to get to rush the passer ??? They were in the bottom third in sacks last year and have done nothing to improve themselves.

The same thing can be said about the Boys. They have so many holes this year on the line, at RB, Safety, linebacker, and DE . Wasting money on one player like this is silly. You can’t win that way. There are players in the NFL who are starting to price themselves out of being good anymore. NO corner in the NFL is worth 15 mil.

There is a difference between Joseph and Nnamdi no doubt but its not as big as you might think in the overall. Value wins superbowls in the salary cap era, ask the Pats and steelers the best two teams over the past ten years. Has either team ever went for name over value ?? no they haven’t.

As a dolphin I don’t understand why the Jets are after Nnamdi? I mean it is an exciting acqusition but why not improve heavily on the offensive side? The Jets defense is great as it is. Who is Nnamdi going to cover? The second best receiver? That’s a lot of cash to cover the second best receiver on the opposing teams?

  86. ipeefreelyagain says: Jul 29, 2011 11:42 AM

  87. flybirdsfly says: Jul 29, 2011 11:45 AM

As an Eagles fan I would like to see the Jets sign him but at the same time, Nnamdi can’t cover DeSean the whole time, He can out run anyone. Whatever happens, if Dallas does sign Nnamdi their Safties won’t be able to help over the top.

I’d still rather see him on the Jets.

  88. supashug says: Jul 29, 2011 11:45 AM

never seen a CB get this much attention, how did the Oakland D do with him?

even if the Jets get him it still just makes the team better, not SB bound, they need some offense, not a CB

there are also probably 5-7 teams calling on him, hell reports had him at TB and they never contacted him

  89. flapjack1231 says: Jul 29, 2011 11:46 AM

Let the Jets get him PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a dolphins fan & I can’t wait to hear all the talk from Fat Ryan & their fans.

The JETS do not understand football which is why they are trying to make this deal. First it was Lito Sheppard. Then Cromartie. Now Nmandi? When will they get it?

I don’t care who your db’s are. If you can’t pressure the qb, any wr will get open eventually! The Jets answer to that last year was Jason Taylor? LMAO

Sign Nmandi & Homes, BIG DEAL!. Holmes will be double teamed all year long. Hopefully Braylon mans up & leaves that stinker of a team.

Sanchez was simply OK with all those weapons. Take most of them away & see how well he plays! Through in no pass rush & that = another Championship-LESS season!

I love the posts saying the jets are trying to buy a title. Pretty much every player on offense besides holmes, hunter and LT were draft picks or undrafted free agents. On defense you can basically say the same thing with the notable exceptions being bart scott and calvin pace.

The jets front office has been great at drafting the last 5 yrs (except for gholston) in addition to making good trades. The jets have just been run well overall.

I would argue that NA would be better off in Dallas. Weaker conference, better QB, better overall offense, and actual pass rush (not just crazy blitzes that dont even lead to sacks).

How are the Jets going to score enough points to compete for a superbowl?? They have 1 legit weapon in Holmes. 2 mediocre backs, an above average TE, an average at best QB?? I dont get it.

The typical response to all jet fans if they win sb will be: well you should have…you still won’t get respect!”

First of all… i would love for the Jets to become the Yankees of football… and I hate the Yankees, but I do like championships. Second of all…. who have the Jets signed in the past few years who was the most expensive free agent in football?? There is a salary cap in football… no on can become the Yankees… The Jets have signed no free agents from other teams this season…. last season they signed four guys who were cut by their former teams to minimal contracts… Jason Taylor, Brunell, and Folk and LT….. they acquired Cromartie and Holmes by trading draft picks in the 2011 draft. The only big names they have signed in the past 5 years are Bart Scott (hardly cap buster), Calvin Pace (same thing), and Alan Faneca. The other major contributors on the team were all drafted by the Jets…. and yes the Jets to give them paychecks each week, so I guess you could say they are trying to buy a championship….(Sanchez, Greene, Harris, Revis, Ferguson, Mangold, Cotchery, Keller, Brad Smith, Shaun Ellis, Mike Devito, Pouha, Moore etc) Look it up, get your facts straight. It’s pathetic to hear people whining about buying a championship. You can’t buy a championship with a salary cap…every team has to play by the same rules….some just play smarter than others.

What other teams have to offer in money, the raiders have to offer where Nnamdi has lived the past 12 years, have been taken care of and blessed to have worn the silver and black, has a lot of time and energy invsted in the community where he is respected, has his mentor Rod Woodson now on the coaching staff,
and has a great relationship with the Al, and Amy. If he stays a raider, he will have a job for the rest of his life with the raiders for life the same way guys like willie, fred, jim, tom, rod, steve, etc…..have…guys that are loyal to the raiders, the raiders stay loyal to. Those who talk smack (which nnamdi would never do regardless) about the raiders, generally remain unemployed.

If we sign Nnamdi we wont need Cromartie. Shaun Ellis could come back for a low price even if we do get Nnamdi. Who is gonna give him a MM dollar deal? And Edwards is overrated but was a luxury to have last year as a two. With Holmes and Moss and J Co we would have a solid receiving core. Yes Moss isn’t what he used to be but he isn’t going to be asked to be the answer just a working part of the offense. And Look at the last few special teams players before B Smith- Leon Washington, an Miller to name just two. They were great return men for us. Im sure the Jets can find another suitable return man. And for the wild cat, Randle el just got released and could be signed for vet minimum as an alternative. These are options, all viable. I just think that the Jets would be a shutdown defense with Revis and Nnamdi together. Each week the top two offensive passing weapons would be shut down and allow the front 7 to focus 80-90% of their time on the rush while the safeties can cover the 3rd and fourth passing options for the most part.

    (1) Why are you mentioning Cromartie as a loss? If the assumption is that they’ll sign Asomugha, then that’s a big upgrade.

    (2) Edwards would be a loss, depending on whom they get to replace him.

    (3) Brad Smith isn’t a great returner. The last three KR guys the Jets had before him (Leon Washington, Justin Miller, and Chad Morton) all made the pro bowl because Mike Westhoff is the best special-teams coach in the league.

    (4) Re: pass rush. Everyone said they had no pass rush last year, and they still finished #8 in the league in sacks, to say nothing of hurries and pressures. When you have a great corner–or-two–you generate pass rush by bringing blitzes.

    (5) So Demarcus Ware gets to the QB. Big deal. He got there 15+ times last year, and the Cowboys won 6 games.

Again…. WRONG!!!!…. Due to the rules surrounding the uncapped year in 2010 the Jets were severely restricted in signing free agents due to the final 4 rule…. but please keep insinuating that the Jets just keep throwing money around when in fact they don’t. 140. kevpft says: Jul 29, 2011 5:40 PM

The Cowboys had a bad year last year, but they will do much better this year. Stable head coach, strong defensive coach, returning starters where it counts, good draft talent, and a division that isn’t going to leave them behind (Giants and Eagles still have just as many issues).

NY has a better track record the last couple years, but no one who has watched the Cowboys can say that they aren’t one good secondary away from the playoffs, and probably a playoff win or more. Secondary has been their biggest weakness for about a decade.

So either way he goes, he’s going to get a heck of a lot closer to a Super Bowl. It’s almost a toss-up between these two teams – Dallas is on the way up and hard to see the Jets pulling this same act for a third straight year.
