Vince Young will sign with Eagles

As expected, the Philadelphia Eagles will be filling their void at backup quarterback with a guy who has won 30 of 47 career starts.

Vince Young, cut by the Titans and unwanted by any team that has an opening at starter, has agreed to terms with the Eagles, per Albert Breer of NFL Network.  Young will sign a one-year deal.

It’s a great move for both sides.  The Eagles need a backup for Mike Vick, and Young will benefit from the coaching that Andy Reid can provide.

The best news?  That Favre-to-Philly talk can end less than a week after it started.

Update– Minutes after signing his deal, Vince Young has been traded to the Miami Dolphins for a second round draft pick. Andy Reid, you’ve done it again!

A combined wonderlic score of 26 between the Eagle’s QB’s. Could this be the dumbest set of QB’s a team has ever had???

  9. cured76 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:27 AM

It’ll be hard to fleece a team if he only has a 1 year deal.

It’s an honor to have you on our bench Mr. Young.

  12. cured76 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:28 AM

With Vick a constant play away from injury, why not just have him as a normal backup? Why not give him 3 years?

  13. connorchew says: Jul 29, 2011 12:32 AM

say what you want about young, he wins games. it will take a while to pick up the playbook, but i’m very confident in this pickup. even if he’s the worst starting quarterback in the league(which he’s not) he’s the best backup now. now go and get a linebacker eagles!

  14. rtl1984 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:32 AM

The eagles will want a second round pick for young a year from now.

  15. mempusa says: Jul 29, 2011 12:33 AM

But good pick-up for the Eagles. Both sides will benefit.

  23. tyguy5 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:36 AM

With both Young and Vick potentially a year away from free agency, there could be another very interesting offseason awaiting Philly next year.

  24. rollerino1 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:36 AM

VY is a talented knucklehead; hope they can keep him in line. MV is on the straight and narrow right now, and VY would be the perfect partner in crime.

  25. andyreidisfat says: Jul 29, 2011 12:37 AM

Not the best mechanics or always the best reads but the guy does win so if Vick does have to miss a game or two i think VY can get it done for us.

  27. jacksaysfu says: Jul 29, 2011 12:38 AM

And the winners of free agency. .. The Philadelphia Eagles! DRC, 2nd rd pick, VY, and Babin ( 40+Kill less then Johnson ) and doubt we’re done yet.

  28. vbe2 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:39 AM

They should have made it two years so they could trade him for a second round pick next year.

  29. wallyhorse says: Jul 29, 2011 12:40 AM

    Great news for the Eagles:

As both Kolb and Vick showed last year, you need to have two quality quarterbacks in this league if you want to do anything, and Vince Young will definitely benefit by being here.

  34. skinsfan1981 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:44 AM

This is a bit premature. As per Adam Schefter, young has to pass through waivers before the eags can sign him. Tomorrow at 4 pm

  35. flyeaglesfly13 says: Jul 29, 2011 12:45 AM

Wow its actually gunna happen, that’s awesome! We just got ourselves a better back up than Kolb would ever of been for the 3 or 4 games Vick is gunna be hurt for. Andy will definitely be able to work his magic again, another nice move by the eagles this off season.

  48. jsrdc says: Jul 29, 2011 1:01 AM

Flyeaglesfly, it will only be a good pickup if (1 the Eagles actually get him after he clears waivers, 2) he actually stays out of trouble while in Philly, and that is a big IF, 3) Reid can actually get through to this young, immature punk.

jh500, the talent in Philly has been scary for a long time. It doesn’t automatically translate to anything.

VY is lucky another team is willing to take on a project who has burned bridges in his last city. VY needs to man up quickly, and if not, this will likely be his last chance in the NFL.

  49. saintez says: Jul 29, 2011 1:02 AM

Anyone who thinks this is good for your team doesn’t know anything. Philly fans won’t expect him to produce…. When the going gets tough, Young bails. Good luck with that.

  50. rayjayjohnsonjr says: Jul 29, 2011 1:08 AM

News Flash – Favre is determined to prove the Eagles wrong by not signing him instead of VY. Is anxious to join the Skins so that he can beat the Eagles twice next season. Stay tuned.

Here’s the part Adam left out: If you claim him , you inherit the contract that he had at Tennessee. Think the Eagles are paying him anything like that? You think any team wants to pay him what he made for the Titans? I doubt it. He’ll clear waivers, and he knows that, that’s why he basically shopped himself like a free agent.

Vince Young + West Coast Offfense = disaster

  68. justinsam10 says: Jul 29, 2011 6:45 AM

interesting thought, when Michael Vick came back in the NFL from prison in 2009, he was totally retaught how to play football, technically how to play quarterback. Andy Reid’s offensive coaching staff taught Michael Vick how to properly throw the ball better, the mechanics, the spacing of the feet, the tighter spiral, learning how to check your reads, pass first, run second. Michael Vick can still run and tear up the the field, watch them do the same thing to Vince Young and make him Vince Young 2.0, now if only Tony Dungy can mentor VY also

  69. weneedlinemen42 says: Jul 29, 2011 7:00 AM

It’s a great signing for the Eagles. Vince Young may not be a great “franchise QB” and doesn’t put up great passing stats but he does win games.

You’ve now got the two most mobile quaterbacks in the game. You can fully tailor your offense to use Vick’s skills, without having to account for a back-up who is a statue by comparison.

Though I kinda feel sorry for Vince Young. I don’t actually think Andy Reid is that good at coaching quarterbacks. He is very good a using them, at maximising their potential through adjusting his scheme, but they don’t tend to leave as better players. As evidenced by their performance on other teams.

VY also struggled to cope with fan pressure, in Tennessee. Eagle fans get an unfair rap, but if there is any where a delicate flower like VY is going to struggle to cope with fan pressure, it’s Philly.

  70. NFLJunkie says: Jul 29, 2011 7:23 AM

So what are the waiver rules in this crazy offseason? Under the old rules, vested vets (4+ seasons) were not subject to waivers if released before a certain point in the regular season.

Is this because the league year hasn’t officially started yet or something?

  71. 706vet says: Jul 29, 2011 8:12 AM

Vick will make a great mentor for Young!

  74. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Jul 29, 2011 8:43 AM

i don’t think vince young is even the second quarterback; at least not very soon. for those who are celebrating, i don’t expect the eagles to get much of anything out of him this year. a lot like vick the first season.

if, however, he decides to grow up and work like a grown man, they will teach him to play and probably squat on his rights next year as vick will have been signed to a longer deal by then.

word to the wise vince. this is the cynical tough northeast. all that wack sh*t you did in tennessee and texas won’t fly brother. start dancing with a bunch of dudes with your shirt off and you’re on the next plane to brokeback mountain….

  75. eaglesfan135 says: Jul 29, 2011 8:46 AM

So Ried trades Kolb who won 3 of his 7 starts for DRC and a 2nd rounder. Then he picks up a QB, head case or not, who won 30 of his 47 starts. They could probably flip him to trade for the entire Jaguars franchise, or maybe Ried could get with Ruban Amaro and add him to the Pence deal…..

    ———————————

Your name says it all. Get over yourself. Vick has been a different guy since they picked him up in 2009….on and off the field. He is the only reason we went to the playoffs last year. He’s made a team that needed several years of breaking in a new unproven QB into a real threat. With the Eagles’ improved their defense and OL (with Watkins, Babin and DRC), they should become an bona fide SB contender.

im shocked that there is such a positive reaction to this. Vince Young SUCKS. All i hear is “he wins games, 30 out of 47.” I guess people didnt do enough research to know that he has not won a single game against an over 500 team in his career. Oh wait he did beat the colts during the last game of the season.

I hate to say it, but if he were a white QB, he wouldnt get near this much acclaim, he’d just be Derek Anderson

  79. bringbacktheflex says: Jul 29, 2011 11:21 AM

“The Eagles need a backup for Mike Vick, and Young will benefit from the coaching that Andy Reid can provide.”

Can anyone tell me why Reid still gets a pass for his crappy coaching? Vick is a one trick pony that “benefitted” last year from teams not sure what to expect from him. What exactly did Reid do for him? What did Reid do for 1st round draft pick McNabb? I mean, when you select a QB in the 1st round isn’t he expected to be good?

Reid has choked and whiffed on winning a championship, has made questionable decisions, and has lied through his teeth. Why is he held to a lower standard than other coaches?

(Hint: I know why. But I just thought it needed saying.)
