Willis McGahee joins the Broncos

AP

The minute Willis McGahee was released by Baltimore, reports surfaced that he wanted to join the Broncos.

Denver scanned the running back market, came up short in a bid for DeAngelo Williams, and decided to grant McGahee his wish.

A league source tells Florio — breaking news during PFT Live — that McGahee has agreed to a three-year, $7.5 million deal with $3 million guaranteed.

It’s a somewhat underwhelming pickup.  McGahee remains a solid NFL player, but his best days are behind him.  After all the talk this offseason that the Broncos didn’t trust Knowshon Moreno, we expected them to make a bolder move at running back.

It’s quite possible the team still brings in another decent veteran to the group. Between this move and getting caught bluffing on a possible Kyle Orton trade, the Elway-led Broncos front office may be using up much of the goodwill of their fans.

  1. This should give Moreno a breather on third downs and should ultimately improve the entire running game. A little steep on the contract in my opinion.

  2. I like this. This guy is tough and we know he can take a hit. Good move. He wont be a superstar but he’ll put some balls in the end zone.

  3. Not sure why Rosenthal is so down on this signing. I LOVE it. 3 years for 7.5. Sproles got 4 for 14 and I would MUCH rather have McGahee. In fact, I think of all the RBs left, I’d only rather have Micheal Bush or Bradshaw. McGahee’s still 29 and wasn’t overworked the last three years. Plus, this greases the wheels for McClain, the real area of need.

  4. I know Moreno had a bad start last year with injuries and all, and I guess there are rumors about the coaches not liking him, but the guy put up some fairly nice numbers last year when he finally got somewhat healthy. I had him on my FFL team and he was pretty productive the last 3rd of the season.

  5. I disagree, and feel this is an excellent (not underwhelming) movie. McGahee’s best days are not behind him. He wasn’t properly utilized in Baltimore, and has a slightly younger body than most RBs his age because of the lack of playing time in recent years.

As long as McGahee can avoid the injury bug, he will be very productive, and will vastly outperform Moreno.

  6. Ok, now that we heard from both Bronco fans, I’ll offer my condolences for the upcoming pathetic Denver season in advance.

  7. Denver desperately needed a decent running back. Willis may not be in his prime, but is a great add for Denver.

  8. In further news, the future population figures in Denver have suddenly been adjusted upwards 5% inexplicably.

  9. The Broncos really need to stop picking up yesterday’s garbage at RB. Moreno is alright but probably not enough.

They should have been in on Sproles. That would have stuck one to the Chargers too.

  10. Who the hell thought Elway would be a good GM anyway? Players seem to suck in the office i.e MJ.

  11. @starderup

At least our three QBs aren’t Pat Devlin, Chad Henne, and Matt Moore.

You should feel badly for Miami. Oh and the Seahawks. Why pay for Rice when Tavaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst are the only QBs on your team.

  12. @starderup….save your condolences for whatever pathetic team you follow..This is a good pickup for tandem with Knowshon Moreno..McGahee still has some tread and has a nose for the goal line

Ravens should make a play for DeSean Jackson

You sir must be very uninformed of how the NFL works. DJax is not available. He is under contract, Philly is NOT accepting offers on him. Baltimore would EASILY have to cough up a 1st+ to even get Philly to accept the phone call. Djax will be in Eagles green for a LONG time. Suck IT.

  14. Willis should start right away. He’s a touchdown machine that doesn’t go down easy.

Make Moreno the 3rd down guy.

  15. Jason La Confora is saying this report is false and that the Broncos plan to work him out first.

  16. I’m just glad I’m not a Kansas City fan – no super bowl appearances in 40 years and no playoff wins in 18 years. WOW, that sucks.

  17. This is a great move for the Broncos. It wouldn’t surprise me if Moreno got the axe. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Willis had a better season than Dwill does in Carolina.

  18. I’ve watched every game that he’s played in a Raven uniform. This is an EXCELLENT value pickup for Denver. He WILL start, and he WILL ball out. Moreno is headed for the bench with the quickness. I would give it all of about 2 practices for John Fox to make that choice. McGahee is one of the most underrated players in the league right now. He also has one of the meanest stiff arms.

  19. This is exactly the kind of veteran bruiser running back John Fox likes. Carolina fans will remember how he rode Lamar Smith and Stephen Davis until their wheels fell off. Now all he needs is his guy to run the draw play on 3rd and long. Enjoy Bronco fans!

  20. Its a great signing. Moreno is a good back (4 yards a carry and 9 yards a catch for his career) but has had trouble staying healthy. By taking some of the wear and tear away he may become a more effective player. Plus it should make him realize he needs to pick it up. The money there paying McGahee is only 7.5 for 3 years with 3 million for sure. Compaired to what D.Williams just got thats nothing. Williams gets hurt more then Moreno for gods sake.

  21. Willis may be 29, but he has less wear on him over the last couple of seasons after being relegated to backup. Willis is a really powerful back, more so than most realize and is a decent pass catcher. He should be a good compliment to Moreno and I think Fox will get a lot out of him. Other than the initial issues he and Harbs butted heads over at the start of the ’08 season he has been nothing but a stand up guy and a true team player. Its no blockbuster. Move but its a good one for the Broncos and at a decent price, I think you’re undervaluing the move yourself Rosenthal. We Ravens fans appreciated Willis when he was here and the Broncos fans will too.

  22. This is a great pick up. He wasn’t worth the 6 mil he was getting from the Ravens, but he will still make plays. He would get less than 10 touches a game in Baltimore, yet would still produce some amazing runs over the course of a season. With a more consistent workload he could put up some good numbers for the Broncos. Best luck to you Willis.

  23. The problem is that Denver has salary cap issues until the league year officially starts next week and their “dead money” comes off the cap. But that’s next week. They had to make a move on a RB now, and McGahee was the best combination of talent and affordability currently available. With a reconstituted OL and some new blood, I’d expect Denver’s rushing attack to at least be a factor, where last year it simply wasn’t.

  24. If your team had the cap situation we had thanks to Joshie “Frat Boy” McDumbnuts you’d understand why we in Denver are excited about this. Not over the moon, but excited nonetheless. Remember, we had Knoshow and Corell Buckhalter.

Please, tell us what you are talking about Willis. We’re all ears.

    Go Broncos.

  25. I don’t understand why the Saints are being praised for having three different styles of backs in Ingram, Thomas, and Sproles, yet the Broncos are deemed foolish for doing the same thing with White, McGahee and Moreno. I think this is an excellent move and gives the Broncos power, speed, and versatility at the RB position.

  26. Thank God…this ratchets up my fantasy potential for keeper Ray Rice. At least I won’t need to see this turd trot on the field as soon as the Ravens get into goal line situations anymore. Hopefully they won’t sub LeRon McClain as the new goal vulture. give Rice the damn ball when you get down there!
