Eagles land Cullen Jenkins

2011 NFC Championship: Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears Getty Images

Another day, another big free agent signing for the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense.

The Eagles have announced that former Packers defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins has reached an agreement with the team. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it’s a five year, $25 million deal.

Jenkins played 11 games for the Packers last season, starting eight and recording seven sacks. The 30-year-old had played his entire seven-year career in Green Bay.

The signing comes less than 24 hours after the Eagles made a huge splash in free agency by signing cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Maybe the Eagles really will be a Dream Team. Or maybe they’ll discover that you can’t just spend your way to the Super Bowl.

UPDATE: Michael Lombardi of NFL Network reports that Jenkins’ contract could essentially turn into a one-year, $4 million deal if the Eagles decide to let him go after the 2011 season.

Well, at least the “swept the Giants again” trophy will look nice in the case

  22. udontknowjaq says: Jul 30, 2011 4:36 PM

Havnt we seen this before? Redskins Patriots maybe alil wit the Cowboys don’t think you could buy you SB in free agency! So far that’s been fact!

  26. drmonkeyarmy says: Jul 30, 2011 4:36 PM

It’s kind of funny, the Eagles said they were going to be aggressive in free agency. A majority of the fan base did not believe them at all and thought they would cheap out. I give them credit, they are certainly going for it.

  27. kmurph1226 says: Jul 30, 2011 4:37 PM

  30. monsterscream says: Jul 30, 2011 4:38 PM

Please don’t underestimate the ‘Vick factor’ in all of these free agency moves by the Eagles. Everyone in the league wants to play with the man who bounced back and became legendary.

  31. blchaney69 says: Jul 30, 2011 4:38 PM

Ok, so is there NO SALARY CAP this year or what? How in the hell can the Eagles afford all of these moves and still be under the cap!! Seems Fishy!!

Philly’s are the Yankees of the NFL this year.

  33. ctiggs says: Jul 30, 2011 4:38 PM

  34. wherezwaldo says: Jul 30, 2011 4:39 PM

i guess they didn’t see how well that worked out for the Redskins.

  35. phillyphever says: Jul 30, 2011 4:39 PM

    Three things left to do:

    1) Get a LB or 2 (paging Nick Barnett).
    2) Get Danny Watkins signed and in camp.
    3) Get Desean’s contract taken care of.

  36. smellmyface says: Jul 30, 2011 4:39 PM

Looks like Snyder has rubbed off on the Eagles. Im sure Jackson loves watching all this money go to free agents as they wont have the money to redo his contract even if they wanted to. I guess they want a great D since Vick probably wont last 8 games this year with the pounding he will take.

  37. smootysmoot says: Jul 30, 2011 4:39 PM

Does Daniel Snyder own the Eagles now? They better win it this year because they r gonna be in cap hell soon.

  40. docredskin says: Jul 30, 2011 4:41 PM

Jeff Laurie spends a ton and he’s “going all in to win a Super Bowl”. Dan Snyder does it and he’s “trying to buy a Super Bowl”.

Literally the only position on the team that isn’t rock solid is Safety, and depending on what they do with Asante, that may not be true.

And to those saying we’re the new Redskins, we pickup GOOD free agents, and still know how to draft.

Ah well. The iggles are this year’s version of last years Queens. Buying everything in sight for a desperate run at a trophy is going to pan out for Philly the same way it played for Chilly.

All teams have to spend 99% of the cap, the Eagles are just doing it with a SPLASH.

  72. melonnhead says: Jul 30, 2011 4:49 PM

haha sure. Bunkley, Patterson, Andrews, Reggie Brown, Abiamiri, McCoy, McDougle, all 2nd round picks or higher, draft picks like that are why you have to bring in so many free agents.

  73. gbfanforever says: Jul 30, 2011 4:50 PM

    @seneca1ss-

I was reading Morris’s comments about using the teams cap space to resign core, in house, young talent. This is the approach that has brought Lombardi trophies to GB, Pittsburgh, and you could argue the Giants and Colts subscribe to this philosophy as well. While I understand it’s not fun for fans to see their team not win the preseason title, it’s much more fun to see your team win actual titles. The bucs are going to be good for a long time.

  74. teal379 says: Jul 30, 2011 4:51 PM

Wish Cullen well in his new home.

As to those talking about how the Eagles are “going all in for a Super Bowl” – I’m trying to remember the last team that did so and actually won or even made it to the Superbowl?

Eagles aren’t my team and they can do what they want but every SB winning team I can think of off the top of my head – got there by building from within, working hard and instead of “making a push and going all in” – they simply were “there” after hard work.

Packers, Steelers, etc. None went hog wild in FA and won the dance that year, or even a year after.

If anything, the idea of splashing huge in FA during a year where there isn’t a normal camp/OTA schedule makes LESS sense, no chemistry, no chance to develop it before the games count for real. You don’t have the chance to really drop a game or 3 due to guys “figuring out how to play together” in a 16 game season when you have teams like Green Bay, NE, Pitt that come back with a strong core that have played together at the higest levels and played well.

Good luck Philly but just because you have ingredients, doesn’t mean you have cake.

  75. melonnhead says: Jul 30, 2011 4:51 PM

Hey look, a Cowboys fan upset that nobody wants to sign with his team. Cute.

    ———————————————————–

The Cowboys have always been good at coaching up players. They won 5 Super Bowls without having to go all in on free agents. Draft and develop better and the Eagles wouldn’t have to, either.

  76. qoojo says: Jul 30, 2011 4:52 PM

I guess they have finally figured out you have to pay to play. Just like the team across street.

  91. deadmanwalking47 says: Jul 30, 2011 4:58 PM

having seen the eagles choke numerous times the last 40 years,i’m sure they’ll choke again this year regardless of who’s on the team!

  92. romoscollarbone says: Jul 30, 2011 4:58 PM

This is what happens, when you draft a solid core, shrewdly. You have low cap #s, that allow you to splurge insanely in a given year. The problem with this is that it’s “All In”. In 2 seasons they will have to cut/trade/restructure like 6-8 core starters. However if they win the next 2 SBs it’s worth it.

Looking at Djax, Andy Reid knows that Maclin is the man at WR on that team, and while DJax is an amazing PR, he is one clean shot away from Wayne Chrebet-ville. Right now DJax is in line to make about 565,000 I believe, so realistically they can say he here’s a 2 mil bonus, and 3 yrs for 6.5 mil, take it over sit out and be our property for an extra season.

And Vince Young Refuses to get off the excersice bike and enter the game saying” He only came here to watch” . Andy Ried is furious and says he will play Quarteback.

  98. mikebyrne1502 says: Jul 30, 2011 5:02 PM

For those asking how they have so much money… its because they don’t have big time contracts on there team, the only people getting paid in philly were T.Cole K.Kolb(az cardinal now) Samuel(who only makes a little above 5mil this year). They didn’t have to sign Mykell he left for St. Louis, they still have Vick under contract, so they had a ton of money to spend. Instead of having guys like T.Laws on the front line and Lito Sheppard as a corner they went and spent money they had to, to get starting cliber players. Last year there offense was so explosive but you could run circles around there d. Good job on Reid for getting this done, now lets see if he can get that hump off his back of being labled as the guy who can’t win when it counts.

  99. andyreidisfat says: Jul 30, 2011 5:02 PM

Man i am just not used to being in this position. Now i kinda know how a yankees fan feels. Hell the sad part is most of the Eagles fans on here are pretty complimentary about other teams, I know i am.

But yet when the Eagles sign all the players that you wanted your team to get you get all mad and bitter. The Eagles have always been one of the better teams in the league at managing the cap space they have. Also unlike most of the league last year during the uncapped year the eagles didn’t spend a ton of money like a lot of the NFL did (i’m lookin at you jerry jones) and now when we have a big time roll of free agents because of the new cba the Eages were in the best position.

Also I am really starting to think there is more to the players want to play with Vick and for Andy Reid . Reid gained a TON of respect around the league especially with the black players when he helped turn Vick’s game AND life around. People really want to play for this guy.

Cullen has been playing a lot of end in that 3-4 i guess he was tired of that and wanted to come get up the field more. My guess is this ends the eagles career of Bunkley since both guys have about the same cap hit. I think Bunks is a little bit more in fact so the eagles might save money on this one.

CJ’s a great pass rusher when he can play. He’s on the wrong side of 30 now. So is Nnamdi. CJ will spend some time on IR. One thing about capping out on in-demand FAs: you’d better have some real depth when injuries pile up because you won’t be able to go out and buy it when it’s needed.

  101. worldatlarge1 says: Jul 30, 2011 5:04 PM

haha sure. Bunkley, Patterson, Andrews, Reggie Brown, Abiamiri, McCoy, McDougle, all 2nd round picks or higher, draft picks like that are why you have to bring in so many free agents.
    ============================

Are you really saying McCoy wasn’t a good pick? We continue to find gems later in the draft and you all hope to find these All-stars in the 1st. Do we wanna get into the Skins draft history, which includes TWO good players in 20 years?

So the last few years the Eagles have been sitting on their butts signing B rate free agents and hyping them up, only to find out they don’t pan out, just as most Eagles fans predicted. Then we get this?! Unbelievable job by the Eagles front office. The Eagles are too stacked, it’s almost unfair. They have signed some excellent free agents. In 2 days they have added 5 pro bowlers. This is mind blowing. Just hope Desean gets his money at some point

All of you guys that are belitting the Eagles have forgotten a few things–

1.. Nobody, and I mean nobody manages the cap better than Joe Banner. That’s why for years they were able to lock up their young talent early while other teams were losing theirs.

    2. The Eagles had what, 15 UFAs–and as someone pointed out, didn’t re-sign any of them.

    3. That BS about the Cowboys not going all in for FAs is BS–Deion Sanders, Charles Haley, etc. The only time they drafted well was when Johnson was there.

    4. The difference between the Eagles signing all of these FAs and the Skins doing it is the Eagles have a better coaching staff. They have stability–how many HCs has Snyder had in his 12 years owning the team? Hell, he fired Schottenheimer after he started out with a crap team and ended 8-8; even the great Joe Gibbs in his second try only made the playoffs in two of the three years the Eagles didn ‘t–’05 and ’07–here are the coaches Snyder has had–Turner, Robiskie, Schottenhiemer, Spurrier, Gibbs, Zorn, and Shanahan–that’s less than 2 years on the job–same way with Dallas–how many HCs have they had since 99–Gailey, Campo, Parcells, Phillips, and now Garrett. The point is every time you hire a new HC, you put in new systems and new players to fit those systems.

So quit your crying and just wait until the start of the season.

What’s to be bitter about? Should Cowboys fans be bitter about the Cowboys beating the Eagles 4 out of the last 5 games?

    —————————

A sampling of 2 years, nice work Chief. I’m sure you feel real great about the Cowboys going into this year. The O-Line will have at least 2 new starters and the secondary is a total mess. Romo is like A-Rod, he puts up great stats when it means the least. That’s why half the team wants Jon Kitna to start, gives them the best chance to win.

Dallas is #3 in the NFC East, probably a 6-10 or 7-9 team and no playoffs.

………… yet we’re still going to win the division. And all you’ll have is your “Swept the Giants” trophy case to rest on. See, teams that are mostly set don’t go out buying up free agents like a 12 year old playing Madden on rookie level after beating the Super Bowl and doing free agency. Teams win with stable rosters.

As long as we’re healthy, we’re returning a top 5 offense and defense. I like our chances.

Although I will say this was a good signing. I was hoping that we could have gotten Jenkins to replace Cofield, because I don’t fully trust Joseph yet.

  125. fmwarner says: Jul 30, 2011 5:15 PM

This isn’t like the annual Dan Snyder spending spree.

    1. The Eagles were complementing a team that won the division last year. They were targeting specific needs and making a good team better, not trying to make a stab at relevance by throwing money around.

    2. The Eagles spent the big guaranteed money on a character guy (Namndi) who isn’t going to pull a Haynesworth.

    3. Aside from Nnamdi, these deals don’t have a lot of guaranteed money. If Young or Jenkins or Babin or DRC don’t work or cause a problem, they’re easily cut without destroying the cap.

    4. This is the result of the cap management by Lurie and Banner that Eagles fans routinely bemoan as cheap. The Redskins never had that cap discipline, and that’s why their free agent mistakes blow up on them.

  126. o0omorriso0o says: Jul 30, 2011 5:15 PM

It’s amazing that people are still finding ways to knock the Eagles. You know, because spending money to put a quality product on the field is so horrible.

The comparisons to Snyder are cute too. Which contracts have the Eagles doled out that look anything remotely like Haynesworth’s? What trades have they made that look anything like giving up a top-40 draft pick for Donovan McNabb?

Maybe you Skins fans should stop hiding behind the Super Bowls you won two decades ago and realize that like it or not, the Eagles have one of the efficient and business-savvy front offices in the league. Period.

  130. pheagles says: Jul 30, 2011 5:19 PM

The eagles are opportunists. They along with everyone else knew the lockout was coming and would cause chaos with free agents. Some teams spent when there was no cap last year, the Eagles purged their team instead. Normally the free agent class is filled with leftovers and a few diamonds in the rough, this year is filled with good players because of poor team planning and unknown CBA rules. During a normal off-season a lot of these players would never have made it to free agency. Some teams just planned poorly. No team had more rookies starting the last two years. They already penciled in two rookies to start this year. To say they are buying a championship through free agency is looking at it one sided.

  131. bdawk20 says: Jul 30, 2011 5:20 PM

Anyone comparing the Phillies to the Yankees should quickly note that 1) there is a salary cap and 2) everyone has an equal opportunity to sign these guys. It’s not the Eagles fault the players want to play there. Jenkins didn’t want to play in DC, can you blame him??

To answer what seems to be two of the most common questions/comments on this post:

    1. How can the Eagles afford to make these moves?
    a. Even with Vick at the franchise cap number, the Eagles came into the season well below the salary cap. Not Bucs or Bengals level, but a very nice chunk of money below. They also chose not to resign their own free agents. Oh that group, Mikkel (safety), Bradley (MLB), and Weaver (FB) were the most significant. They had already brought in Schmitt at FB when Weaver was out last year, and I believe they had already deided to go with Chaney at MLB, so it’s not like these were big losses. Once they sign Vick to a long term deal, his cap hit will be reduced. We still have to wait and see what happens with Asante. If he ends up getting traded, that’s between $9 and $10 million off the cap as well. The Eagles FO has always been great at managing the salary cap, and they made the moves they needed to to prepare for everything else they’ve done.

    2. The Snyder comparisons.
    a. Wishful thinking, pure and simple. Snyder went for the big splash and overpaid to get the biggest name FAs regardless of need. While Nnamdi my be the biggest name FA, he isn’t a random addition. All of the Eagles moves have been targeted and addressed areas the Eagles needed to improve. Oh, and they didn’t overpay for any of them. We get Nnamdi at a salary about 2 or 3 million dollars a year less than what he made with the Raiders, and we got Jenkins at a decent price because other teams have taken their time addressing DL issues, which has softened the DL market. DRC we got in trade, so we’re simply taking over an existing contract. VY is a one year backup contract. Gives Kafka a chance to develop for another year and it gives VY a chance to learn and rehabilitate his image. So, there really is no comparison. Snyder have Haynesworth $100 million contract, despite the fact that the Redskins were already strong on the DL at the time, and despite Haynesworth’s known issues. The Eagles are addressing positions in need of improvement, and not setting any salary records to do so.

For the guy who said “it’s a FACT you can’t buy championships”, you have no idea what you are talking about. The redskins never seriously put together any kind of talent. Throwing an aging vet here and there does not mean you’re superbowl bound. Haynesworth for example never fit into their defensive scheme and McNabb, was past his prime. The rest of that team was a joke. The pieces you put together need to fit and you need to have a coach that knows how to utilize the talent he has. The redskins don’t and never did have that. The cowboys never got anywhere for similar reasons. The Cowboys are HORRIBLE talent evaluators and way overpay the free agents they sign. Roy Williams anybody?? The other problem with the cowboys is they are stuck on Tony Romo, who for all intents and purposes is just slightly above average at best. (Shut up..you all know it’s true!) It doesn’t matter what kind of talent you bring in, it’s not going to help if you’ve got a lazy choke prone prima dona running your offense.

The Eagles on the other hand are notoriously good with cap space and contracts. They got Asomugha for well under what he was projected to go for. They got Vick for pennies on the dollar as well. Obviously that’s going to change this year, but the point is the eagles don’t blow money on stupid deals. (for the most part) Unlike the Cowboys and Redskins, they have a draft first mentality. They know how to pick em and they know how to develop them. That keeps cap space in check, which allows them to be aggressive in free agency when they need to.

The eagles may not win it all this year, but they clearly filled a lot of huge holes and didn’t have to break the bank to do it.

    _________________________
That’s funny, because I remember both the 49ers and the Cowboys do it. Does the name Deion Sanders ring a bell? 49ers got him from the Falcons, and he proved to be the last piece they needed for a SB run, and then the Cowboys bought him out from under the 49ers and did the same thing. Eagles aren’t trying to “buy” a SB in one offseason. They’ve been putting together a quality young team, and are using FA to fill in a couple remaining holes just like the 49ers and Cowboys did.

  156. drmonkeyarmy says: Jul 30, 2011 5:42 PM

So, the Eagles sign a high character guy who is widely considered a top 2 CB and a guy on a 4 million guaranteed contract and all of a sudden they are the Redskins? Don’t see that at all. Best part of their just completed press conference. Reporter: Do you guys have room under the cap to make more moves. Banner: “Oh, Hell Yea.”

  157. jpennjr says: Jul 30, 2011 5:44 PM

And you can compare the Eagles strategy in free agency to the Redskins because the Eagles already have the core of their team from the draft and they use free agency to plug in holes. The Redskins try to build a team from completely from free agency with no chemistry.

  158. birdbrainsnj says: Jul 30, 2011 5:46 PM

Redskins have nO coaching staff and sign usually one top agent when the team is a colossal disaster. Eagles have a young core of explosive weapons and just added a few defensive players to sure up the D. Yeah, they’re big name guys, but to compare the eagles to the skins is ridiculous. They’ve been a constant playoff team. Skins can’t hold a coach for more than 2 years over the last 15 years.

They’ve been putting together a quality young team, and are using FA to fill in a couple remaining holes just like the 49ers and Cowboys did

Not Miami Heat of the NFL at all. Nnamdi is not the same personality as Lebron. These acquisitions are for positional need. There won’t be any arguing of who will get the ball at the end of the game. As much as I hate the Yankees, that would be a better comparison. And the end result will be the same. Championship.

Didin’t the Skins beat the mighty Eagles last year… and 15 years of what? Unless you win it all, no one remembers

    _________________________
You seem to be forgetting those 49ers your boys poached back in the day to help them get to those SBs. Selective memory is a wonderful thing, eh? Oh, and the Eagles are building from within. McCoy, Maclin, Jackson, Celek and a whole bunch of others all drafted and developed by the organization. Vick was a reclamation project, and he’s come out of it better than he was in Atlanta. For all the “splash” in the news, the Eagles have added 2 CBs (one we got by trading a 2nd rounder we drafted and developed), a DE that was on the team before, and a D-Lineman. Eagles have done rather well building through the draft, especially considering the fact that they’re consistently using later picks. In fact, compare the Eagles roster to that of the Colts. With the exception of Peyton, which team has the better infrastructure?

  169. timunga says: Jul 30, 2011 5:55 PM

Just a heads up to all you Eagle fans out there, you can’t “win” the Super Bowl without playing any games. Not too mention, the majority of the players you signed are 30+ and on the back end of their career. If the dominos start to fall like flies what’s your game plan? How good are the back ups? With that being said, you better pray for good health and we all know with the shortened preseason and training injuries are bound to happen. Just sayin’

I would like to thank Laurie and the Eagles team in general, for taking the onus off the Packers this season.

Usually, the Champs get so much scrutiny, sometimes too much, making it difficult to mantain their focus week in and week out.

But thanks to the birds spending spree, maybe, this could allow Green Bay to fly under the radar again this year.

  171. melonnhead says: Jul 30, 2011 5:57 PM

    ———————————————————–

1 – They traded for Roy Williams. Jevon Kearse anyone? What about Darren Howard? Takeo Spikes? Stacy Andrews? Donte Stallworth?

2 – You’ve got a lot of nerve calling Tony Romo a choke prone prima donna when you’ve got Vick and Young as your 1 and 2.

For those who say that Desean Jackson must be pissed seeing all this money being spent, you should know that his contract was mentioned in the press late last season and the Eagles GM was reported to say that they would loom into it after the season. Of course. The lockout prevented any reworking of the contract, and now it seems that acquiring free agents and making trades to get the players they want are the priority. The Eagles are known for not renegotiating contracts but the truth is that they’ve done it before for premiere players and they know full well DJax’ value to the offense. Not only will Jackson get a better deal but don’t think they won’t cover the holdout fines as well.

they WILL take care of D-JAX and by trading BUNKLEY they cleared 8.5 million off the cap so they have plenty of money for D-JAX.. they will give him a similar deal to Santonio Holmes and then he will be happy, i think thats what he is worth..

if i was him tho i woulod hold out.. or take a huge insurance policy out in case i got hurt

dont hate the Eagles.. hate your GM because we all had the same Cap..

As to your previous statement about poaching from the 49ers, I was referring primarily to Charles Haley and Deion Sanders…both of whom were integral to SB championship teams. If it weren’t for the moves Jimmy Johnson made, Cowboys fans would still be bragging about the Staubach years. So, go dust off those old trophies yet again. Yeah free agency didn’t exist when the Cowboys traded for Charles Haley. Deion Sanders was ONE free agent acquisition… and the Cowboys had already won two Super Bowls by the time they got him. But seriously, you’re going to compare those two guys against the army of guys the Eagles have brought in over the past few years?

And far as “look to be more successful” goes, that will be decided on the field. It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Eagles and I expect them to fire Andy Reid if the Eagles don’t at least make it to the game.

Same goes with Vick. Third I think the eagles know alittle more about their cap room space and about whose making what then any of us know. I’m glad we are picking up good players in FA but I’m not jumping the gun there’s games to be played n management knows this, they are giving us the best possible players to get us a super bowl. Cowboys had the core: ESmith, Aikman, Irving but they brought in free agents on D.

    ————————————————————-

I’ll spot you one. Deion Sanders. Name the rest. Nope, the 49ers traded Haley to the Cowboys before free agency even existed. The truth is that other teams poached a lot of the homegrown Cowboys defensive players and defensive guys they got off the waiver wire between 1992 and 1995 and that’s the only reason they had any holes in the first place.

LB Ken Norton – 49ers (lost him in 1994)
    S James Washington – Redskins (1995)
DT Tony Casillas – Jets (1994)
LB Vinson Smith – Bears (1993)
    S Thomas Everett (1994)
    S Kenny Gant – Bucs (1995)

And of course cornerback Kevin Smith blew out his achilles in the first game of the 1995 season. Most were replaced by players that they already had in-house. Can’t you excuse the Cowboys for signing one free agent to compensate for all of the above losses?

Those are just the defensive guys, too. I could add Alvin Harper, John Gesek, Kevin Gogan, Kelvin Martin, and Mark Stepnoski if you want to add the offensive guys.

Eagles still have no LB or safeties…10-6…first round bye…loss to Packers again in second round…but Eagles fans you can thank the new rules forcing the Eagles to spend money on other teams castoffs….but you still have Andy Reid as a head coach

How many do the Cowgirls have?

    mellon,

    DEFENSE NOT DRAFTED BY COWBOYS:

    Haley
    R. Donaldson (started 16 games)
    Strickland (started 16 games)
Teague (played 16 games and started 8)
B Thomas (played 16 games and started 9)
    R Harper (played 14 games)
Deon (played 16 games and started 15)
Casillas (started in ATL…back on Boys in 96)

Thats not even all of them. I won’t start on the offense.

I don’t have time to get too far into this but its clear that most teams have a strong mix of both drafted players and free agents/trades.

The trick is managing the salary cap.

Don’t be a hater. You had your hall of fame years in the 90s. Let us enjoy these…

Thats good. You know your stuff. Why did they lose all of those guys on D? Salary cap issues?

  227. steelforce43 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:38 PM

Do the Eagles have a different salary cap then everyone else??? What is going on???

Melonhead’s posts are eerily similar to an old adversary named “Vox.” If not, same type of tool. Trolling Eagles threads in an effort to try to impress us with their abilities to look up stats on the internet. Tools, stick to your crappy Cowboys threads. Real fans don’t care for your waste-of-time comments.

I think you should spend more time developing a plan that would get you out of living in your mom’s basement.

Wow, a lot comments on this one….must be the Philly fans jizzing over the Eagle and Phillies FA signings and the trades….everything is going their way – ON PAPER!!

The reality is this…..This may be the wrong year to pile up all the talent……no off season to learn and bond…..

Andy Reid is still the HC….somehow Andy recently has gotten some sort of Vince Lombardi treatmnent by media and other football people……..he is good,, but he still sucks when the game is on the line and the air is hard to breath…..the clock is Andy’s enemy – the guy sucks at clock maagement…..

Anyway…good luck Eagles…..there is nothing greater in life than witnessing all the Philly @holes have their hearts broken again….welll, 2nd greatest- i love when NY teams suck the big one and i get to listen to them cry like spoiled little girls on WFAN….

By the same token, quit acting like having the best ingredients on hand can’t possibly turn into a good cake. That position is even more absurd.

  235. cleverbob says: Jul 30, 2011 11:45 PM

Who knew that signing free agents was such a dishonorable act? I suppose the sanctity of football has been compromised.

Good thing there are still beacons of purity such as the Cowboys that continue to dominate while completely forsaking the practice of signing free agents. Just look at all the successes they’ve piled up in the past couple decades!

  236. macjacmccoy says: Jul 31, 2011 12:25 AM

Kave Krew on paper? For the Phillies? On paper is before the season. What the Eagles are is a good team on paper. The Phillies are the best team in baseball. They have went to a great team on paper to a great team inscribed on gold leaf.

  237. chrisvegas says: Jul 31, 2011 12:50 AM

For those of you who aren’t knowledgeable football fans who keep wondering how the Eagles have this kind of money, let me break it down for you. Every year the Eagles are 20 million under the cap. They go through the season under the cap. Eagles are a very financially smart team. They don’t over pay players and they don’t get themselves stuck in contracts with past-their-prime players like the Redskins do. The Eagles where 20 million under the cap last year and they haven’t resigned any of their free agents. They went into this free agency period with over 30 million in cap space. Also if you look at who they signed you will see they got these players for good prices. You really have to take your hats off to the Eagles front office. Though they haven’t won a championship in a long time, they are a winning team every year and right now they have created a buzz about their teams and people want to play there. I think the Eagles are going to the bowl this year providing they get D. Jackson back and a good middle linebacker. If this happens, look out Green Bay Packers because the Eagles have build themselves to beat you. Just look at their 3 CBs.

Melon can try n rip the eagles all he wants. He knows the truth, and the truth is he is hurt that the eagle landed nnamdi, he wanted him to be a cowboy. Awwwww. He got his wittle feewings hurt! poor baby!!!
Yup Eagles went out and made a big splash, does that mean the Eagles are cheaters? Omg!!!! Jerry Jones would never do such a thing!! T.O. was a big splash the final piece of the puzzle. Roy Williams another big splash, and he was the final piece to the puzzle. Dez Bryant, another big splash, and final piece to the puzzle!!! The boys try to make a splash every year, it may end up as a ripple but it was meant to be a splash!
Go ahead n talk about 1993 melon when the boys were great!! That’s all you got!! You still brag about how fast yer car was in 1993, “it may not run now but wow could it move in 1993!” you brag about how hot your girl was in 1993! “She may be old fat n wrinkled now but damn in 1993 she was FINE!!!!” You might have had the life in 1993, but damn those days are gone bro! there are new fast cars! Hot young girls, and now there’s the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES!!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!!!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again…

The Eagles will NEVER win a Super Bowl with Andy Reid as Head Coach… simply not going to happen… he WILL find a way to screw it up.

    ————————

I’m as critical of Reid’s in-game management as anyone, but can you really say that the Eagles haven’t won a SB because of him? They should have won in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, they just didn’t get it done in the NFC championship. In 2004, McNabb choked (literally) and the Patriots most likely knew our plays before we ran them (ahem). In 2008 the defense just couldn’t hold up our offense anymore. Those were really their 3 real chances, and I don’t recall Andy Reid blowing any of them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still be making jokes about how Andy Reid eats players he’d mad at, but I’m just sayin’

    You’re bitter cannon.

The Eagles share ZERO similarities with your fraud of a franchise.

Now that a REAL franchise has spent money, we will be successful.

Your management philosophy from Snyder down to Shanahan is an absolute joke.

Whose your QB again? Did you really pass on EVERY draftable, free agent, and trade worthy QB for JOHN BECK?

    Beat it.

You’re a tool. Thank god you aren’t a fan of our teams.

Loyalist is a noun, not an adjective. The word you were trying to conjure up? Loyalest. In english speak, we would say “the most loyal”.

Here in Philly, we don’t become fans of teams because they won championships.

Let me guess, you’re either a Cowboys, Steelers, or Niners fan right? Bet you also like the Yankees and the Lakers too huh d-bag?

  249. 4forphilly says: Aug 6, 2011 8:25 AM

All of you keep wondering how do the Eagles have so much money to sign all of these top free agents. It is simply because they released many players that were in the 1-3 million a year range, ie Quintin Mikell, David Akers, Sav Rocca. Also, last year they re structured many players contracts in order to free up cap space for this year. It is obvious the Eagles knew what the situation was going to be with the new CBA, so they were smart for once and planned ahead.

  250. pigeonpea says: Aug 6, 2011 12:54 PM

@teal369: “… every SB winning team I can think of off the top of my head – got there by building from within, working hard and instead of “making a push and going all in” – they simply were “there” after hard work.”

You mean like the ’95 Packers, who, in winning SB31, had Desmond Howard, Reggie White and Brett Favre (all acquired by trade or free agency) as their 3 best players? Just wondering.

  253. blchaney69 says: Aug 6, 2011 3:58 PM

Are you Kidding me.. The Packers made a trade for Favre in the offseason before the 92 season.. A second year QB that Ron Wolfe intended to DRAFT in the previous years draft when teh Falcons snagged him one pick ahead of them. They didnt win the SuperBowl until 3 years later.. Desmond Howard was HARDLY one of their best players..He had a big year that year, but wasnt even Close to being one of the best players..So Yes, Reggie White was a key piece that helped put the defense over the top.. sometimes you gotta do that.. get your facts right!!!
