Raiders sign Trent Edwards and Khalif Barnes after Gaither deal falls apart

Trent Edwards AP

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that left tackle Jared Gaither agreed to terms with the team, a report that was immediately disputed by his agent.

It turns out Gaither was with the team, but ESPN’s John Clayton says the Raiders chose not to sign him.  It’s not hard to connect the dots here. Gaither missed all of last year to injury, and his troublesome back has been a problem for years.

Instead of going with Gaither, the Raiders are going with trusty old Khalif Barnes.  Clayton reports Barnes signed his third straight one-year contract with the team.

Oakland also filled their hole at quarterback, signing Trent Edwards.  In Edwards’ return to the Bay Area, he’ll compete with Kyle Boller to back up Jason Campbell.

    Call me a Bruce Gradkowski homer but he’s still a better option than Boller and Edwards put together. I remember back in the ’08 season Edwards put up 3 scores in 5 or so minutes to beat the Raiders. Unfortunately, that was many concussions ago. Class guy, but he’s not going to help any teams progress anytime soon.

    Stop it!! Stop the Al “Coach” Davis hate.!!!

    Sure hes done a “few” stupid things as owner……

    But don’t you realize he’s the only owner that not only hires the physically challenged. He lets them play WR…….The Americans-With-A-Disability act will never be broken by Al. Its not dhBUST’s fault he was born with lobster claws made of stone for hands…..

  13. Chairman Al says: Jul 30, 2011 7:13 PM

    Smart. Never hurts to have a backup QB with starting experience. Edwards is no Pro-Bowler, but at least if Campbell goes down he’s not being thrown into his first game.

    As for Gaither, he probably would have wanted some big cash, and offensive line is a brutally physical position. If the team didn’t feel his back was 100%, its risky considering they’re trying to make cap room.

    As for Barnes, not a phenominal player, but at least he knows the playbook, and with a limited time for practice, it beats someone brand new coming in.

    Now, we NEED to get Zach Miller. And, crazy as it may seem, I have this scary foreshadowing that OAK is going to be in the running for Randy Moss….again…

  14. xstaticonradio says: Jul 30, 2011 7:14 PM

    I feel bad for Edwards. He could have been a great QB if he didn’t start taking more hits than Amy Winehouse

    Eagles sign Gaither to 1 year incetive heavy deal. Boom.

  16. dafixisin says: Jul 30, 2011 7:18 PM

    Guess Stanford Trent and California Kyle can duke it out for the backup axe in Oaktown.

    On the O-line front, what’s become of Jammal Brown? I think he would be a solid signing to shore up either OT spot with the Raiders. I’m alright with Khalif Barnes, but mainly in the capacity that he was utilized last year, as an extra OT/TE in short yardage situations.

    I’m kinda mystified that Professor Clayton reported that Undead Al had a $14 million per offer on the table for Asomugha. Thought they were over the cap? Still, with that kinda money allegedly available, kinda wondering what their backup plan is gonna be. Antonio Cromartie?

    Also surprised that it’s taking so long for Michael Huff to sign somewhere. Assuming it’s not the Raiders, of course.

    My dark horse signing is FB Le’Ron McClain, Rolando’s cuz. We could then trade Michael Bush to fill a need at another spot if need be. Le’Ron would get those carries he’s been complaining about in Baltimore.

    I’m with stackraider95 re-signing Millers is Vital!!!!

  19. Chairman Al says: Jul 30, 2011 7:36 PM

    @dafixisin,

    I wonder if the 14 million was an unofficial agreement, like saying “if you agree to this, we’ll make the room”. I’ve read a lot that the Raiders are trying to get Miller, but need to sign Wimbley to a long term deal to free up cap room. Maybe that’s what was up?

    Personally, I’d prefer Bush to McClain. Nothing wrong with LeRon, but Bush hasn’t taken as much wear and tear over the past couple of years. And I like Marcel Reece at FB. He had some great receptions last year, and I love the idea that Barnes, Reece, and (potentially) Miller are all suitable receivers in respective situations. Makes Campbell’s like easier, takes pressure off of Run-DMc, and lets Hue get a little more creative.

    Miller must want to stay in Oakland is just waiting for the wimbley deal because atleast one team in the NFL has had to have offered him a deal. He really is the best player on that team now that Nnamdi is here.

    Better sign him up quick OAkland because the Eagles are going balls to the wall and Zach Miller would look real good in green. =-p just kiddin we have a guy who is basicly the same and younger i think.

    Gaither’s back is not as bad as his attitude. He wants to cash in and not have to work hard, at least that’s some of the talk around b-more. BUST. He had one decent year and last year his head was 7 sizes too big.

    Cromartie either heads back to the Jets, or the Niners, or Dallas pulls out some dough.

    It’d be a nice signing. because Walter McFadden isnt remotely ready to go opposite Routt. Then, Dashon Goldson is in the mix at free, but no one is going after Huff….

    Anybody remember the old joke about Arkansas & Mississippi? “Thank God for Mississippi, else Arkansas would be last in everything. Substitute Raiders for Mississippi, Cincinnati for Arkansas. At least for the last several years.

  28. dafixisin says: Jul 30, 2011 8:20 PM

    @Chairman Al

    For sure, gotta re-sign ZMiller. Wimbley’s 1 year deal, as it stands, isn’t helping matters. I think he wants to stay too, being that you know he’s easily the top TE available. If we lose ZMiller, god forbid, hopefully we can sign Todd Heap as a stopgap measure.

    I agree with you on Bush, he’s got less tread on his tires. But my gut thinks that Hue Jackson would have something to say about bringing in LeRon to help adminster his power running approach. I think Coach Jackson was a major factor in the team bringing in Gaither for a look-see. Still, I would like to see the team bring in someone along the lines of Jammal Brown to provide some veteran experience and leadership to what is now a very young unit. Speaking of, how is Cooper Carlisle still on this roster? I got tired of watching instant replays of him being absolutely blown up by bull rushing DTs. It’s like he was getting hit by a car or something. Tom Cable can have him if he wants him!

    Would like to see the team take chances on roll of the dice types that have been cut recently, like Derrick Harvey and Amobi Okoye. Even though they he didn’t play a lot, Jarvis Moss looked like he had something left after he came here and reverted to his natural 4-3 DE position. Take a 1 year flyer on these types; can’t hurt.

    Laugh it up haters. I love you for hating on the Silver and Black. Especially the Donkey fans, DisCharger fans, and the Quief fans. Might not have gone to the playoffs last season but sweeping the AFC West is a start.

    Anyway, if a player has recurring health concerns, would you sign him? I thought so. I’m glad they didn’t shell out big bucks on an oft injured player.

    Edwards=training camp body. Barnes=o-line depth.

    As much as it bugs everyone, the fact remains that the Raiders went 6-0 in the division last year. And guess what they did a lot of it with a hurt Zach Miller and a hurt Asomougha.

    I guess everyone forgot about Darren McFadden on offense who helped the Raiders become the #2 Rushing Team in the League.

    Defensively, Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly and Kameron Wimbley lead the Raiders to a 47 Sack Total, Tied for Second most and only one sack behind Pittsburgh.

    @dafixisin:

    You make a good point about Coach going for McClain, being two former Bal’more boys.

    I have no issue with trying Jarvis Moss on for a year. Raiders are notorious for giving burnouts second chances (see: Jim Plunkett, Rich Gannon, potentially Kamerion Wimbley).

    Speaking of Wimbley, I agree he wants to be back. He should be signed soon to a long term. Wouldn’t mind Todd Heap, but I honestly don’t see Miller leaving. Still, these are our Raiders here…

    As for Cooper, got me on how he’s still there. He and Mario were painful to watch last year. I think Veldheer is going to have a breakout 2nd year. Guy was already huge, and now he says he put on 15 more lbs of muscle. He wasn’t the right fit at center; too tall, easy to get him fof balance. But at guard, he should be a beast.

    Just saw this on another site:

    “New coach Hue Jackson unveiled a hard-hitting drill pitting one linebacker or DB against a lead blocker and ball carrier. MLB Rolando McClain delivered a big hit on rookie RB Taiwan Jones, ending Jones day with an apparent injury.”

    Easy, killer. Not yet. Reminds me of the psycho cop in The Replacements.

    Actually, since OAK swept the division, it would be two games. And setting a team scoring record will be reason to bring it up, so get used to it. Wasn’t exactly just another win.
