Report: Braylon Edwards staying with Jets “won’t happen”

New York Jets v New England Patriots Getty Images

Missing out on Nnamdi Asomugha gave the Jets more money to spend elsewhere, but that money apparently won’t be spent to re-sign free agent receiver Braylon Edwards.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News quotes a source as saying, simply, “It won’t happen.”

That’s no surprise, as Edwards himself has said the Jets don’t want him. But Mehta writes that it’s less about the Jets not wanting Edwards and more about the Jets not wanting to spend the kind of money it’s going to take to re-sign him. The Jets have other priorities, including re-signing Eric Smith (which they just did) and re-signing Mark Brunell (which they’re expected to do this weekend).

Now the Jets will move on and look for another free agent wide receiver. And Edwards will look for a new team. The Vikings are said to be interested.

That picture sums up Sanchez’s abilities

Doesnt seem like a big move but resigning eric smith is huge for the jets. They have players like him who are not big names but very important to the team that need to he resigned. Edwards isnt worth the money. There are alot of receivers still available and i really think they are gonna get moss even though i dont want him.

In the span of 24 hours the guys who run the Jets have gone from geniuses to IDIOTS. The Jets came out flat against Pittsburgh in the Championship game which was otherwise a winnable game. As we speak, the Jets are no where as good as they were last season for no reason other than allowing Asomwa to jerk them around for 4 days.

  4. depotnator says: Jul 30, 2011 7:57 AM

Good riddance. Edwards rarely lived up to his hype.

  5. merc13 says: Jul 30, 2011 7:59 AM

Why does pft always find the worst pictures? A ball being intercepted and Braylon grabbing the face mask, lol

  6. jimr10 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:01 AM

Braylon Edwards is like Maxwell House coffee ….good to the last drop.

  7. flavordave says: Jul 30, 2011 8:02 AM

Maybe Derek Anderson can throw Braylon Edwards a form at the unemployment office.

The New Jersey Green Beans once again show their true color — green ($$$). As in, trying to make a noisy free-agent splash by signing Nnamdi to sell more of the thousands of PSLs that remain unclaimed. The lockout wrecked their chances of re-upping for “Hard Knocks” this year, so Woody Johnson got desperate. Now, it’s coming back to bite him. Probably for the first time in his life Braylon Edwards deserves credit for not being a sucker. We’ll see if Cromartie wises up and jumps ship as well.

  9. wussbasket says: Jul 30, 2011 8:13 AM

Jets are losing players left and right…

  10. canetic says: Jul 30, 2011 8:14 AM

Look on the bright side Braylon. If you aren’t playing on the Jets you at least have a chance of being in the Super Bowl.

  11. rayvens says: Jul 30, 2011 8:14 AM

Edwards to the Bears!…its like they want Cutler to fail out there! Roy is not the answer..he’s and upgrade but thats not saying much.

  12. otistaylor89 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:17 AM

Yeah, I would make Mark Burnell my top priority too.

    In 1997…

  13. baldy55 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:20 AM

This is such crap. Unless the Jets have some other big move coming we dont know about. SIGN BRAYLON AND CRO!!!!

  14. joeinoh says: Jul 30, 2011 8:20 AM

    Edwards is a douche bag.

  15. BTC says: Jul 30, 2011 8:26 AM

No Brad Smith. No Braylon Edwards. No Nnamdi. Ladainian one year older.

Good luck this season, Fat Rex. You only get so many fluke comebacks before it catches up to you, and you used all yours last year when your team actually had talent.

  16. Topher says: Jul 30, 2011 8:27 AM

Re-signing Brunell? Sanchez is in year 3… if he still needs a Daddy the kid has problems.

  17. l0ki11 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:28 AM

I think it would be cool to see Braylon Edwards or Malcom Floyd. Personally i think Malcom fits the bill for our needs. Whatever happens we need a #1 WR for Donovan.

  18. pacash80 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:39 AM

Lol @ the guy who suggested Edwards join the Bears. If that happened, the Lions secondary could probably catch more passes from Jay Cutler than Edwards and Roy Williams combined.

  19. wtf__seriously says: Jul 30, 2011 8:43 AM

Tunescribe, you are right about one thing….Woody Johnson IS the owner of the Jets, and they did pursue Nnamdi. The rest of your post is laughingly mistaken. Won’t even bother dissecting it, since I saw it started with calling the Jets “New Jersey Green Beans” and I am assuming you’re somewhere between 10 and12 years old.

  20. daikuro2 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:44 AM

Why Mark Brunnel, can’t you people in the gang green circle find a better one. Brunnel is one hit away from retirement.

  21. afc22 says: Jul 30, 2011 8:44 AM

All you guys predicting how bad the Jets will be, you’re the same guys who were predicting they’d win 6 last year right?

  22. JAM says: Jul 30, 2011 9:00 AM

Report: Braylon Edwards drunk and taking a cab “won’t happen”.

  23. cassrangers says: Jul 30, 2011 9:00 AM

as much as I HATE to say it, I hope the Bears pick him up, He’s a huge upgrade for them, and since Sims-Walker signed with the Rams, they don’t have a lot of options left…

  24. jetsarestacked says: Jul 30, 2011 9:07 AM

i love all these reporters with their ‘sources’ tweeting what they expect to happen. i wish i had that job where i can just make stuff up all day because i’m just as clueless as everyone else.

also, so far the jets have lost brad smith and drew freaking coleman. hardly, losing talent left and right like you all like to believe.

  25. prestigew0rldwide says: Jul 30, 2011 9:13 AM

Braylon had a tough year with drops after his breakout year in 07(where everyone seems to forget all of his spectacular catches) and made some mistakes off the field.. but I still dont understand why everyone wants to throw him under the bus.. the fact is he is an elite talent with great natural abilities who towers over holmes and can jump over any defender.. on more than one occasion he prevented a poor sanchez ball from being intercepted, many times worked hard to get open only to have sanchez force the ball unsuccessfully to holmes.. and never complained about not being used as much as he deserved to the whole season. I just ask that all of the fans that are so quick to say “he sucks” will open there eyes, if not to see what he already proved last year or in the phenomenal 07 season even with derek anderson throwing to him, but when this year is over and he outperforms holmes.. even if its on another team, admit it. Just admit you were wrong just as the Jets are with how they handled there receiver situation. Everyone was so quick to say that the jets needed to sign holmes and screw edwards, why? because of a steeler superbowl catch that everyone has imprinted in there thick skulls? Somehow one catch and a decent season classified him as a top10 receiver yet the steelers were willing to let him go..forget that holmes has never had a season close to edwards 16TD 07 season, not close, and he had rothlesberger, not anderson! and still it was an easy choice to make for the jets? Sanchez can be affective but without smith and edwards.. good luck buddy hitting your one short target all season

  26. robsterny says: Jul 30, 2011 9:24 AM

So…Braylon Edwards is a “turd”…a”low-life”..bla…bla…bla BUT! if he signs with YOUR team hes an up-grade …right?…lol

  27. carolinethedog says: Jul 30, 2011 9:26 AM

As a bears fan I actually found that funny…but if I may retort…

    Lol @ the Lion’s secondary….in general

    @tunescribe;
There was never any such thing as another hard knocks for the Jets this year…your an idiot!!

Never happen. Edwards can’t catch anything below the knees and Anderson can’t throw anything above the ankles.

Now that the eagles have their 3 great CBs, Dallas could use this guy. They have Austin and Dez at WR, other than that, no one.

Either Edwards or Randy Moss (yeah, I said it) would make things even; 3 good receivers vs. three good CBs.

  32. 1upberto says: Jul 30, 2011 9:49 AM

Braylon didn’t play as good as he was supposed to. I say the Jets should go after FA Steve Smith (Giants).

  33. tunescribe says: Jul 30, 2011 9:54 AM

@wtf__seriously: OK pal, go ahead and dissect the rest of my post, show me where I’m wrong. You can’t. It’s been transparent since the day he hired that carnival barker for a coach that Woody Johnson is more about selling PSLs than seriously competing for a championship. To his credit Rex fields a good defense, but all the bravado is aimed at one thing only — calling attention to team in a market where it remains in the Giants’ shadow. Rather than work on building a solid foundation (slow & boring), Woody has been trying to load up on “name” free agents for instant results. Three years in it’s already starting to unravel, and thousands of PSLs remain unsold. Nnamdi would’ve been overkill at the expense of other positions and overall team depth. The Eagles saved Woody, Tanny and Rex from themselves this time. What about next time? They are, indeed, the New Jersey Green Beans.

@prestigew0rldwide I agree completely. I think Holmes was the most over rated player this offseason. Hes a munchinkin who doesn’t have the type of abilities other great munchinkins in the league have. I would rather have
santana Moss than Holmes and he cost half as much.

D jax is most likely going to get a deal close to what Holmes got. Seriously who would you rather have ? The pot who underperforms or the Diva who scares defenses into the fetal position (sorry giants fans i know it still hurts)

    In 1997…

Actually, the top FA WR on the market, Santonio, was their top priority and they SIGNED him and he left money on the table to stay with the Jets… nice try, moron

    He’s a Diva !

  38. sschmiggles says: Jul 30, 2011 10:43 AM

That’s it jets, just keep blowing up your roster every year. im loving it.

  39. kmurph1226 says: Jul 30, 2011 11:02 AM

You can guys can bash Edwards all you want but I feel bad for him. He had a huge impact on their offense, catching for more than 900 yards as a number 2. Not to mention he made some clutch grabs for them, including vs. my Dolphins, vs. the Texans, and most importantly, vs the Colts in the playoffs to get into field goal range.

Sanchez is going to suffer this season without him. The Jets think that Randy Moss will be a cheap answer but once he sees how bad Sanchez is he will probably go back to his old ways and I don’t blame him.

Edwards was mistreated and I hope he comes play No.2 for us in Miami but I think he would do wonders for either the Vikings or the Bears and their pass-happy offense.

Good luck, Braylon. One of the few Jets I actually liked.

My intuition tells me he’s a low quality POS as human being. My guess is that he really sucks as a teammate, people don’t like him and even though he has athletic talent, the negatives outweigh the positives.

  41. depotnator says: Jul 30, 2011 1:29 PM

The problem with PFT is that posters’names usually don’t indicate the TEAM they are a fan of. It would be better if PFT required posters to choose their favorite team when they register, and that team logo is displayed next to their name in their posts. The ‘haters’ purpose would be more easily revealed.

  42. merc13 says: Jul 30, 2011 1:35 PM

Why do people think the jets are worse than last year, they lost brad smith and Braylon Edwards, I guarantee the jets will make a deep run in the playoffs again stop hatin.

i agree. the level of hate for ny in general and the jets in particular is sometines startling. i wonder what the lives of these small minded little people must be like. but identifying their team would help ‘keep it real’

holmes is talented and CLUTCH. that’s why he keeps making big plays in big moments. ultimately a much bigger value than other ‘munchkins’.
that doesn’t have to translate into knocking edwards who was an excellent #2 receiver last year. his signing would wait AT LEAST until after the namdi thing ran its course. now we’ll find out if they want him or not. on the field talent might not be the only factor
